Highway Pegs could've KILLED me - EBAY FAIL

  • I recently ordered these Highway Pegs off EBAY for my Harley-Davidson Street Glide.
Upon install they broke, which made me think, what if they broke at 110km/h??
I felt the need to share my experience and perhaps even save a life. This is a dangerous product.

I bought the same set off of Amazon and they advertised as being made of steel, mine did the same thing. That is some sort of Magnesium Alloy. I was a little upset myself.

This is standard China tactic of offering refund. It's a script and you aren't even talking to a person. I once complained about a broken product, they offered 30%. I said no. They offered 45%. I said no I am sending it back and they then offered 30% again lol. They aren't even reading it, they just submit a number.

People complain about the HD prices, but sometimes they make sense.
Put a magnet on that piece and you'll find its probably not iron (magnetic) but aluminum (non-magnetic).
Thanks for the tip regarding that supplier.

Bought the same set in chrome, different seller, same problem. They sent me a full set replacement. So far working as intended. Could be a casting flaw? Regardless, cast metals are probably a bad idea for this application

  • @dimesonhiseyes9134
    @dimesonhiseyes9134 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It is metal what you are seeing is the grain structure of the part. It's a cheap low quality metal probably not even a steel or aluminum alloy. It could be zinc even. It's hard to tell with the blurry picture.

25-50% off for an item with a manufacturing defect. WTF?!
Rob, please contact eBay and the relevant Consumer Authorities and make a formal report. As you mentioned, it has the potential to kill someone! These items (if not the seller) should be removed from eBay.
The metal looks like cast alloy, which is fine when made to spec. This could be a one off fault or an entire batch. It wont be known unless investigated.
Thank you for sharing this vital information!

It’s metallic, the texture you see is the steel/aluminium grain, it’s probably been hardened without tempering so the metal is too brittle.

I purchased a RamMount ball that replaces the handle bar mount bolts, using a torque wrench as I'm tightening the bolt the aluminum that the ball is molded around completely collapsed. I got a full refund from RevZilla, but after sending the photographs to RamMount they wouldn't even comment about the defective product. Could you imagine that thing failing and your handlebars coming loose. I decided that was a very unsafe and unwise thing to do, so I chose a different style of RamMount.

Looks like cast aluminum to me. It can break before bending. That is why aluminum pipe wrenches were banned on the oil rig i worked on. Steel pipe wrenches bend before breaking.

    Hey mate,
I ordered some mirrors from E Bay a few years ago , paid for them and they never turned up.
Biggest mistake was I used the American site and the mirrors were from China.
I pursued this to the point that Ebay USA gave me the contact number for the vendor in China and their email address.
    I emailed,
    Nothing.
I phoned and spoke to a woman who I assume was the vendor however , she told me she was the housemaid.
After that experience I very rarely have used Ebay and I certainly don't buy anything from China.
Lesson learnt by me and now maybe you.
Pay for the brand name and get a good product with recourse should something go wrong, deal with Aussies who understand right from wrong.
Good luck, lucky they broke while fitting.
    I know how you feel.

Throttle Downunder About 6 or 7 years ago I bought a set of dan moto rear sets for my Firestorm.
When I took them out of the packing and inspected them I came to the conclusion that the bolts supplied were shit.
I replaced all the bolts with 316 stainless and in the end the cost was almost the same as well known ones available at the time.
Probably saved about $100- overall however, if I took the extra time into account I was no better off.
Another experience that alerted me to the fickleness of EBay.
I can't remember the last time I bought something from EBay.
Much rather do business direct or face to face.
Let us know how you go with the new ones.
