Fun Fact: At the end, when Zorro confronts Captain Love, he pulls out his sword and the sun glints off the blade running the full length. This was not CGI and was suggested by Antonio Banderas. He had to tilt the sword to catch the sun without breaking eye contact with Matt Letscher. It only took three takes. Also, legendary sword trainer Bob Anderson, who trained Errol Flynn, remarked that Antonio Banderas was the most gifted swordsman with whom he had worked since Errol Flynn. Antonio Banderas had also trained with the Spanish Olympic team for four months and was extremely adamant about performing many of his own stunts for authenticity.
Just in case the first reply got shadow banned / blocked. (I can't see it.) There's a 2024 Zorro Series out. And it's REALLY GOOD. All of you should check it out.
WHAT? He trained Errol Flynn and Antonio Banderas? That's quite a stretch of time! He must have been up there in years when he trained Antonio. That's awesome though.
It's one of the many reasons why I've wanted them to react to this movie for so long! I'm positive that we wouldn't even have that character or film without the Mask Of Zorro!
Alejandro's brother was based of a legendary figure named Joaquin Murrieta who was an outlaw in California during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s. He was called the Mexican Robin Hood and he was the inspiration for Zorro. A man named Three-Fingered Jack was a member of his gang. He and Murrieta was allegedly killed by a California Ranger named Harry Love who preserved Murrieta's head and Jack's hand in a jar of alcohol and put them on display throughout California where people could pay to see them. It is unknown if the head was actually Murietta's because his sister denied that it was and there were unconfirmed sightings of Murrieta and the head was lost in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
This movie is probably the most underrated film of all time. The perfect master and apprentice film “when the pupil is ready the master will appear” Showing how grooling hard work will pay off “perfect do it again” and the perfect vengeance payoff “you’re angry and no condition to fight; you’ll fight very bravely and die very quickly” the moment captain love loses his temper he loses the fight.
This movie is considered the rebuttle to all the CGI action movies that were coming out at the time. Practical action scenes were getting few and far between. This came out and reminded everyone why these kinds of movies are amazing and why they still hold up. I remeber seeing this while in high school and then the resurgence of action films like this.
There was no backlash against CGI back then yet. Don't let the likes of the Nostalgia Critic gaslight you about late 90s movies. Die Hard 3, Bad Boys, Desperado, Assassins, GoldenEye, The Quick and the Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Rock, Broken Arrow, Eraser, Air Force One, Con Air, Face/Off, Tomorrow Never Dies, Enemy of the State, Conspiracy Theory, Lethal Weapon 4, Rush Hour, Hard Rain, Ronin, The Replacement Killers, Saving Private Ryan, etc... were majorly practical films that either preceded The Mask of Zorro or came out the same year. Not to mention that was the era when Jackie Chan's Hong Kong films were being re-released in American theaters.
Zorro was one of the original serialized heroes back in the early days of film. His character started off way back in the silent film era! And how could you not love Antonio Banderas' practice in this movie to become PUSS.... in Boots!
The movie the Wayne’s were watching the night Bruce’s parents got killed was “The Mark of Zorro” (1920). That was put in by Bill Finger to acknowledge that the end product of the Batman was inspired by Zorro.
"Steven Spielberg told Antonio Banderas that the 1998 'Mask of Zorro' would be one of the last non-CGI westerns. Spielberg's Amblin Pictures produced the 1998 film, which featured solely practical effects."
I feel that The mask Of Zorro has become somewhat of a cult film & one of the last great adventure films of the late 90´s. However, the terrible sequel The Legend Of Zorro is rightfully forgotten.
Fun fact. Historically, there really WAS a cavalry officer named Captain Love, and he really DID keep the head of an outlaw named Murrieta in a jar of wine that he drank.
Anthony Hopkins in that outfit saying "charm" like that, followed by that throaty and smooth "yes"...never fails to make me temporarily question my sexual preference.
Meanwhile, Catherine Zeta Jones in all those low cut dresses affirmed mine. She was my #1 teenage celebrity crush my last couple of years of Highschool thanks to this movie.
Fun fact, Zorro and the Count of Monte Cristo have overlapping timelines Zorros first written appearance was in a 1919 novel and was set between 1820-1830s The Count of Monte Cristo was first writen in 1844 and set between 1815-1840s
Bob Kane the creator of Batman got his inspiration for the character from Zorro and The Shadow (please react to the movie!). In the original comics where young Bruce is out with his parents before they get murdered they actually go to watch Zorro on stage which plants the seed of being a crime fighting vigilant
And the song/soundtrack for this movie “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You” by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena had became a classic love song ever since the movie was released. The MV was the scenes of the movie😊
This was a sleeper when released now it's a classic. One of the best hero movies ever, with superb swordplay. Perfectly cast and the chemistry between Banderas, Hopkins and Zeta-Jones is off the charts!
When I saw this in the theatre, I did have a lil issue with hopkins and zeta-jones playing spainards when they are of welsh descent but I enjoyed this movie
I was thinking Green Arrow as well. Green Arrow in the comics was always the masked protector of the common man against corruption with the secret identity of rich playboy Oliver Queen.
Created by Johnston McCulley and established 105 years ago. Zorro is the original caped crusader as an fictional icon of Spanish, Mexican, American culture. Live-action, animated, tv, film, comics, video games, toys, you name it. Almost 80 years after his impact, no one expected a brand new film about the dashing and courageous Fox. This was one of 2 new entries, directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye). Perfect casting with Hopkins as the original, Banderas (first spanish Zorro ever) as the successor and C. Zeta Jones as gorgeous, brave Elena. The action is good and old fashioned just like the original Zorro stories. But with more of flare with today's filmmaking. Marc Anthony & Tina Arena with the love theme, "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" is considered underrated. The M of Z indeed made it cool to see old-time heroes make a comeback and grab the imagination of newer generations. Even revamping "Puss In Boots" into a Zorro-like character with Banderas as the voice. You will love it's sequel, The Legend of Zorro (2005).
7:50 "You think your enemy is a masked vigilante who spends his days bringing criminals to justice, and your best idea is to challenge him to single combat?... good luck with that." ....he's Batman even to the quote of Lucius.
@SixFootTurkey_ Love classic swashbuckling characters especially Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, Captain Blood and the Sea Hawk. There's just something about the rogue that makes them so much more relatable in my opinion.
Zorro is actually inspired by a real outlaw named Joaquin Murrieta in the 19th century. Also the sequel is called The Legend of Zorro. The Count Of Monte Cristo came out in 2002 & The Mask Of Zorro in 1998. Both are great movies that I'll always watch if they're on. Another great reaction guys, can't wait for the next one. P.S. I like the sequel but understand if you decide not to watch it.
I was wondering if you guys would ever react to this timeless classic movie. It is so good and ages well like fine wine. A perfect story of Justice lined up while the old zorro trains the new Zorro. Perfect film. Love your channel. Thanks for uploading.!
I participated in a Spanish fencing class in Valencia in 1996-97, and they had a similar training circle on their floor. Not exact. But, yeah there were different forms for multiple opponents vs individual duels.
Based on how much you liked this one, I have a recommendation, The Shadow (1994). Different time period, different character, but some similarities. Great music score by Jerry Goldsmith, arguably his best. Classic movie, overlooked these days for reasons I'm uncertain about. A couple must-see scenes that you're going to love. Very unique, but very good. As others have said, two of the inspirations for creation of the character Batman were Zorro and The Shadow.
Zorro was my favorite hero alongside superman when i was a child. Love this movie. It was truly a great action movie, doing justice to the series :) Great cast and a great script. Everything is just right with this movie :)
The gossip back then was that when Michael Douglas saw this movie he became besotted with CZJ and set up a meeting. They fell in love and are still married today.
Now I want to see that movie where she was... an art thief? Or catches art thieves? I forget the name, I saw it so long ago but I remember it being a great movie
Funny little fact: Stuart Wilson, who plays Don Rafael in this movie, also played the villain Walker in the third Ninja Turtles movie. Michaelangelo even says to him at one point, "hold it right there Zorro dude!"
My childhood in VHS returns. Thank you again for reacting to this movie. I always laugh at the priest elbowing the soldier's face and Alejandro getting the sword smacked out of his hand
A few things, 1. you mentioned the opening reminds you of James bond, well the director who did Goldeneye also directed this movie 2. The biggest point of note in the final battle, is how As Captain Love gets more and more angry and desperate he starts making mistakes and getting more unhinged, something that Diego told Alejandro was a fatal mistake when it came to sword fighting 3. one of my favourite scenes is when Old man jack calls out the dons and you see many of them look away in shame Then Alejandro reveals himself to jack who recognizes him before he dies. 4. Love and Montessori’s deaths are poetically brilliant, both officially crashed and dashed by their own greed.
32:09 He’s branched off. I really enjoy your video reactions. For me, “The Mask of Zorro” is one highly cinematic experience that I still treasured from my childhood.
This movie definitely was a classic considering it's based off of the old black-and-white TV show that used to air on Disney Channel after dark and further still 31:22 the fact that Zorro means the fox, shows that he is in boding that name wonderfully by the way he acts 36:06 crushed by his own greed… Or should it be crushed by his own vices... what do you think?
You say Count of Monte Cristo, which this story does parallel, but Zorro was a fictional character created in early 1900s based on a real person from the 1800s. His bar still exists in Monterey, California. But his real name was Saloman Pico. Extra fun fact, the restaurant across the street from his bar was built from the ship that rescued Napoleon from the island he was exiled on.
This is ultimately one of my favorite movies of all time! It had everything you could want: dashing hero, a badass heroine, awesome fight scenes, drama, greet villains, revenge, and a love story that didn’t feel cheesy or forced. Love it 😍
I was so lucky to grow up with the originals of so many series like this: Zorro, The Lone Ranger, Maverick, etc. Some film remakes should never have been made. This is not one of those. This is respectful. I forget how many ideas were taken from this film and used in others. Yes this did use other ideas as well. Stick'em with the pointy end. PotC Dead Man's Chest/Jack's escape at the beginning.
I love this movie, probably the best Zorro movie, but nothing beats the old black and white TV show. I watched it all the time as a kid, it would come on the Disney channel real late at night and I’d always be awake so I’d watch that. I might have seen every episode
Zorro is also relatively old. He did not start with this movie... but still a good 70 years after Monte Cristo, so you're not wrong even though you didn't seem to factor that in.
This is such a great film. I saw it multiple times in theaters. A lot of people don’t know that it’s a sequel. The Mark of Zorro is the old black and white film starring the Zorro portrayed by Antony Hopkins in this film. This film picks up when he’s older and about to quit.
Fastest click on a video I've ever done. This was my first VHS and I adore this movie! Now let's hope you guys like it too and I'm not hyping this movie too much before I've seen the video and look like an idiot after you've been roasting Zorro the whole video. EDIT: After watching the video, not disappointed at all. Great video!
This was a movie to enjoy in your childhood of the 90's. Pure legend. Also, and i dont know if they'll go through with it, but there were even talks of a Zorro and Django team up for a film.
I would argue the extra "oomph" is due in part to Sir Anthony Hopkins and his chemistry with Antonio Banderas. Although everyone really just NAILS their characters, plus the sound track is sooooo good, and the choreography...overall the film is simply magnificent.
Re that one guy's weird haircut.... The guy was either a monk or a priest. The practice is called a "tonsure," and was required of men in holy orders, usually monks. It was a tradition practice of the Catholic Church since Medieval times.
This movie is beastly! So great! The acting, stunts, story, emotion. Everything to make an explosive cinema experience. I wish they'd release this in theaters! They don't make em like this anymore🎉🎉
I love this film with absolute passion, the story is engaging, the characters are just as memorable, at the time before Shrek came along, we get The Prince of Egypt at that same year. 👏
💜🦊 in old comic books when kid Bruce Wayne and his parents walk out the theatre that awfull night, they come out of watching “The Mark Of Zorro” with Douglas Fairbanks 💜🦇
Incredible movie to react too. One of my all time favorites. It’s honestly just a shame that Disney/Star Wars didn’t take notes from this movie. This shows how to do a proper ‘passing of the torch.’
One of my childhood favorites, the second isn’t as good, to me they tried too hard to make it funnier, but it’s still worth watching. Also at 3:34 “snow” was medicine at this point in time and could be purchased at damn near any apothecary (pharmacy).
Has the Brothers seen GOONIES yet? I love that film, my mom brought this film into my life at a ripe age of 12. That movie is what brought my love for classic and older comedies with adventure, I then grew up with so many Abbott and Costello movies, weekend at bernies, and much more. Please give the GOONIES a watch if ya'll haven't yet!

BTW, there was a 2024 Zorro Tv Series made by Spain.
All of you should check it out.
And then along came Viggo Mortenson. The same was said about him.
The sword shine always hits hard, doesn't matter how many times I've seen this movie, gets me hype for that fight
Just in case the first reply got shadow banned / blocked. (I can't see it.)

Perfect casting
It's one of the many reasons why I've wanted them to react to this movie for so long! I'm positive that we wouldn't even have that character or film without the Mask Of Zorro!
It hurts physically when someone watches this and says "hey, he sounds like puss in boots"😂

Let's face it, Captain Love had already been continually losing each fight against Zorro.

Shakira was one of the options to play Elena de la Vega, but she rejected it because she felt that her English was not good enough.
At the end of the movie right before the credits when Zoro cut a fiery Z in the air, that was practical?! Wow, that is amazing!
Ah, y’all found a good one. Mask of Zorro was like one of those underappreciated precursors for the summer superhero movie.
This movie, as an action flick, has everything you need. Under-appreciated IMO.
I feel that The mask Of Zorro has become somewhat of a cult film & one of the last great adventure films of the late 90´s. However, the terrible sequel The Legend Of Zorro is rightfully forgotten.

Zorro was the basis for a number of modern heroes like Batman and the Shadow

When I was a kid, my dad and I watched the black and white Zorro series on TV. That was our bonding time and good memories.
I too watched this series when I was growing up.
Grandma gave this to me on VHS for my 4th birthday, with a note on the paper box. Still have it. ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE DUDES!!! you guys are the 💩
I was so lucky to grow up with the originals of so many series like this: Zorro, The Lone Ranger, Maverick, etc. Some film remakes should never have been made. This is not one of those. This is respectful.
I forget how many ideas were taken from this film and used in others. Yes this did use other ideas as well. Stick'em with the pointy end. PotC Dead Man's Chest/Jack's escape at the beginning.
I grew up on the mask of zoro he was my hero, especially being from the Caribbean. We know of him way way before Spiderman and the rest of them.
Not gonna lie ,Zorro was my childhood hero even before batman . The fact that Antonios actually a swordsman in real life
I saw this movie repeatedly as a kid, so much so that I dressed up like Zorro and wanted to be him when I grew up.
Zorro did come out around 1920, but it was based on a real person that was alive when the Count of Monte Cristo was published.
Haven’t seen this for years but remember it being fun!!
Zorro is a very old TV show. One of the original heroes. Love what they did with the movie. ❤
For a while, I thought Catherine Zeta Jones was a Latina, but she's from Wales, UK. This is where I first saw her.
Desperado should be next, Antonio Banderas is a beast in that one.
This is such a great film. I saw it multiple times in theaters. A lot of people don’t know that it’s a sequel. The Mark of Zorro is the old black and white film starring the Zorro portrayed by Antony Hopkins in this film. This film picks up when he’s older and about to quit.
This is one of the best movies. I had so much fun seeing this in theaters with my dad.
The way they weave real history, folklore, and fiction in this film is so fascinating.
I recommend watching it, the legend of Zorro i owned both and still watch them to this day
Yall fellas saved the day!!! Aint shit been on TH-cam worth watchin today
i used to be a piece of shit, but now when strangers call me a piece of shit for flipping off blind people, i just say nuh-uh, i subcribe to Octokrool
The opening has a James Bond vibe because it was directed by the same guy who directed Golden Eye
I blame seeing this movie when I was nine for my taste in women. Kathrine Zeta Jones is ridicilously beautiful.
This is the best Zorro film, which is not to say others are bad -- there are great ones -- but this just has that extra oomph!
A young catherine zeta jones is in this. She first got noticed in a uk tv series called the darling buds of may
Omg!! Finally !! Lord this feels right !! This movie and everything in it is badass!’ Batman wished he could be the mighty zorro!!!!!!!!
💜 ⚔️ Zorro was also a book, a 1919 novel by Jonhston McCulley “The Curse of Capistrano” 💜💜💜
FYI: I grew up watching The Wonderful World of Disney. One of the Serials was Zorro. It was wonderful to see Zorro on the screen again. 😍😍
Catherine Zeta Jones in her 20s 😍
The character that inspired Batman!!!
Can't wait for you guys to react to "The Legend Of Zorro" next! 😁
Incredible movie to react too. One of my all time favorites. It’s honestly just a shame that Disney/Star Wars didn’t take notes from this movie. This shows how to do a proper ‘passing of the torch.’
Kinda overlooked, and a little blasted, at the time, thank heavens we’ve realized what a banger this one really is.
I grew up watching the sequel cause we only had the sequel dvd lol. But I remember it fondly!
