    My favorite line in this movie is when after admitting he was about to execute seveal innocent bystandards just to draw out Zorro, Don Rafael then orders his men: "Get the children off the street!...Children should never have to see the things we do." Despite being genuinely evil Rafael has several moments in this movie that reveals his own twisted moral code. Makes him feel real.

    • @trequor
      @trequor 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Exactly this. While I appreciated that line as a kid, as an adult I really appreciate that they didn't make Raphael a pervert. It would have been so easy... all the pieces are there. His adopted daughter looks just like the lost object of his infatuation... but the entire movie he acts like a proper father.
      God I miss good writing.

Antonio Banderas, Hopkins and the cast are amazing; the writing is top notch and the fight choreography. It’s everything you want in a film like this. In fact this is the best Batman Beyond movie we have that hasn’t been made in live action. Seriously WB copy and paste this type of story if you want to make it. An easy 9/10 for me. Honestly, yeah. This is the best live action Batman Beyond that we will ever get. It does a fantastic job building the master and apprentice relationship between Diego and Alejandro. The passing of the torch feels very earned when it finally happens, and a lot of films get that wrong, usually by rushing things or generally botching the execution.

    • @Avarn388
      @Avarn388 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @@Zansatsu-0379 Whenever you pass the torch you really need to have your character earn the mantle and never make it easy. And within this film and Batman Beyond, it makes sense why the senior hero needs to find a successor due to the limitations of age and also both learn and grow from the younger one. Balance as opposed to the younger one being always right or nobody challenging/ following through on criticisms when apt.

    • @Zansatsu-0379
      @Zansatsu-0379 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @Avarn388 Having the mentor not be completely infallible also helps. Not having all the answers to every problem. Both Bruce and Diego are still wrapped up in their past in a lot of ways, and there's a lot of baggage that they need to parse through. So the young apprentice isn't the only one to have an arc in the story. Diego does this more directly with the fact that he has yet to get back at Raphael, and then Elena is added to the mix. But Bruce has several moments like that in the series as well. Most notably, the stuff with "Talia" and partially with Mr. Freeze, along with a few hints of it with Barbara Gordon.

    The similarities with Batman are because the character was partly inspired by old "pulp heroes" like Zorro and The Shadow. In some Batman itterations, the movie Bruce and his parents see before they die is even "The Mark of Zorro", implying that the Batman persona was inspired by them in-universe as well.

    • @HoofHearted88
      @HoofHearted88 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@MinisterOfTruth As SolarDragon says, it depends on the iteration of Batman. In the Frank Miller Dark Knight series, it's revealed the Waynes watched The Mark of Zorro. That's the 1940 remake of the (to my eyes better) 1920 original. The star of the 1920 version was Douglas Fairbanks, who was credited by name by one of Batmans spiritual fathers Bob Kane as a big inspiration to the character.
      I'm not well versed enough to say in which other Batman runs the Waynes saw The Mark of Zorro before their death, but I believe there were other runs where he was. Bob Kane himself hasn't ever explicitly put the film in the comics, so it's all up for future iterations to put their own spin to it.

    by the time the story starts Proper Diego is too old to be Zorro anymore and he wants to kill Raphael, Alejandro wants to kill captain love for murdering his brother
    being that their goals are entwined they agree to work together, but Diego doesn't just hand over the Zorro guise to Alejandro until he proves himself worthy of it
    he trains him and makes him work for it, teaching him how Zorro acts, since its not just about being a good sword fighter, its why Zorro fights and what he fights for that really matters
    and some trivia that I know: the flower coverings was incase there were bugs in the flowers
    and during Elena and Zorro's Stable fight, Antonio actually got a bit turned on doing it hence why they kind of avoid his crotch in several shots

    The rapier did not necessarily have to have cut off Joachim's head to make the necklace fall free. Movie necklaces are VERY breakable. The most common way of removing a necklace on-screen is to grab the object on the necklace, and pull it forward, causing the necklace to break around the wearer's neck. Someone else often puts it on right away with no depicted repair to the break.

Bernardo (Anthony Hopkins character in this) was Zorro's servant in the TV show. He was mute but pretended to be deaf to spy for Zorro. Fun to see how they picked things up from the TV show to bring into this.

    Ok, so on the American officer's revolver, there were cavalry carbines that use revolving chambers at the time, though I'm not sure as to the design of that one specifically. Also, a musket can hit a target from 200 yards away during the Napoleonic Wars, so a long barrel revolver would probably have at least 100 yards of accuracy in good hands.

      Captain Love is using an anachronistic 1858 Remington revolver carbine at the beginning, likely as a stand in for the period correct Colt-Patterson revolver rifle, which are pretty much unobtainable as so few were made & no reproductions exist. The rest of the movie he is using a period correct Colt-Patterson revolver, as there have been several repros made of those over the years. Real ones are also nigh impossible to get hold of( ironically enough, even for Sam Colt himself, he went bankrupt and had to sell all his original guns and factory, & a few years later when he started working on the Walker revolver he first tried to get hold of some of his original guns to work off of, but couldnt afford them. The California gold rush had started and they were in such demand prices skyrocketed. It forced him to start fresh, and create the original 'Big Iron' revolver, the Walker-Colt .44. And started a long tradition of Sam Colt ripping off everybody from the US Gov to his own parts suppliers.)

    The reason Diego waits 20 years is because Raphael left Mexico. Which is backed with the fact that he had that grand celebration for returning where we see Elena. And when he went to the jail, he was under cover so he wouldn't give away he arrived early. Now you could ask, why did Diego spend the 20yrs in jail, instead of hiding somewhere? And I'd argue, and I believe Hopkins would argue. That Diego both needed to grieve for the loss of his family, and punish himself because he blames himself for his wife's death. So, he chose to stay in jail until Raphael returned to Mexico. Or maybe! The scene in the jail closing in on Hopkins eyes, signified he had lost who he was, but after seeing Raphael the fire was ignited again.

    Original Zorro didn't bother escaping before now because he was dead inside. He lost everything and Raphael was back in Spain. Seeing Raphael again reignited his spirit of revenge. Now he can escape and kill Raphael in the same day.
    To Shad: Zorro's style is not to attack in anger. He uses his opponent's anger against them. The trickster taunting style doesn't work if you are also angry.
