I think a lot of "private carts" or "bamboo trains" used the tracks in the mean time... probably these are safer and marginally more comfortable, but it made for the unique part of Cambodian railways... the vehicles vibe, whilst newer, reminded me a lot of the trains running in Myanmar... maybe just the seat shape...

First great comprehensive review on this route that I’ve seen on youtube. These Hitachi RHN trains ran Thai commuter northeastern line services before being donated to Cambodia. Cambodian Railways was really reopened for freight and the passenger trains are somewhat of an afterthought with limited service appealing to tourists. It is good to see the line back in use and clearly use by local passengers as well as tourists. I hope they make enough to invest in a bit more in the way of track upgrades and in time improve the track stability and alignment...
In 2009 I took a fast ferry from Phnom Penh and along the Tonlé Sap to Siem Reap (for the inevitable visit to Ankgkor Wat, before taking a Taxi to Battambang and on to the train to Bangkok across the Thai border. A fantastic trip. Next time I will take this train!

But for me these train I awe them so much, my mum always traveled from Korat to Ubon every weekend and the ticket is so cheap, around $2 (for a 375km)

During my childhood, age of 4 or 5 until teens, every summer and authum holidays I and my family usually travelled east by train from BKK to my grandfather residence at the border of Thai-Cambodia. The train (ex--SRT), the passing by view of rice fields, hills, country or provincial habitats, a single track, and shaky feelings along the way, they were all my past experiences should I never forget. It's amazing that I can see it being alive again in your VDO.

Agree with this. I travelled to Myanmar in 2017. The PP to Battambang train seemed similar to the Yangon Circle line train (which is kind of like their metro). The overnight train from Yangon to Thazi + Thazi to Kalaw was really an experience. Those trains were poorly maintained (you are able to close the windows on the Cambodian trains but for the long distance train in Myanmar - the metal shutters don't even work. Their seats may be slightly more comfy but again the seats are very old. The wind was howling throughout the night with open we windows. That said, the locals are really nice though. For Thazi to Kalaw trains, there is a risk of being late on schedule - somehow there was some difficulty pulling up the slope when I was there - I think it was designed in a zigzag manner if I recall correctly.

From the video, the track LOOKS fairly well maintained - so is the poor ride a consequence of poor maintenance of the DMSs rather than the track? Do we know if this will be extended to Siam Reap, which could open good possibilities for tourist revenue for the railway company?

    • @MrMatavelhas
      @MrMatavelhas ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@NonstopEurotrip The track is well maintained believe me. You are confusing track standards, which aren't certainly the best with track care.
I noticed the quality of the track care once you gave a shot of the back. The problem is that you are used to modern tracks tamped by machines and the soil isn't clearly the best. We can say the track is good because:
      - The generous amount of balast and how well it is taken care of around the track. You can also see additional ballast on the side ofthe track at minute 9:00.
      - The track alignment, for a clearly manual job is good.
Despite that, you can never have a posh stable track without mechanical tamping. Doing 70 km/h (well, the speedometer wasn't working on the cab...) in a narrow gauge, with 16 meter rails, in such condition is quite good and not as unsafe as it might seem. In fact I am very suprised by the quality of the track!

It definitely replaces the worst ride I've ever personally experienced (about 25 years ago): London to Birmingham on the Midland Mainline, in First Class. The tables had raised edges to keep items from sliding off due to the constant lurching about. The tea was served in dainty porcelain cups that the steward filled less than half full so the tea wouldn't slosh out. Some did anyway. I was trying to do the right thing and take the train instead of flying, but I regretted that decision. Thank you for bringing us this video. Sometimes it is better to experience something vicariously rather than personally. Better you than me. Ha. Did you wait until you reached your final destination to eat your pineapple, or did you try eating it while in motion?

The Shihanoukville line is a bit smoother. I went to Battambang a week after a tanker train had flopped off into a rice paddie, luckily no spillage. I find the Cambodian trains fun, the attendant usually has coffee and food at the start. The open windows are great. I find modern European trains a bit claustrophobic.

Nice video! The Cambodian train is not very comfortable, but it's still an experience. Too bad that the Cambodian Railways do not receive more investment... They could, for example, build an extension line from Battambang to Siem Reap, as that city is the base to tourists that want to visit the Angkor Wat complex....the line could make tourists to visit further into Cambodia....just thinking...

I don't know this train ended the journey at Battambang or continuing to other cities, because when I searched in Wikipedia, after Battambang, your train should be continuing to Sisophon and Poipet. The last city which I mentioned before is city/town located close to Thailand Border. As far as I remember, they also have new train connecting Phnom Penh and Airport. You want a challenging journey - try the PNR that links Manila to Calamba, Laguna, in the Philippines. The LRT and MRT train lines within Metro Manlia are pretty much up to par with anywhere else globally, but the old PNR railway (the first in Asia and the worst maintained) is so bad the government is closing the entire line down soon, while they build a shiny new overhead rail track route over it. If you're able to jump on the old PNR line that links Tutuban station in Old Manila with Calamba before they close it down, I'd give it a try. Despite them buying new INKA carriages, the general experience is interesting - the tracks are horridly maintained - grass grows over it, its like riding in a literal jungle, even though you see skyscrapers around. Most of the slums are by the rail tracks (currently being torn down by the local govt- albeit slowly). Not to mention the lack of fences that stop the slum kids from playing on the tracks, which means slow speeds and constant horn blaring. It will make this Cambodian train seem like joy. You wouldn't believe this is a commuter line. Its such a jarring experience compared with the LRT and MRT lines, which have card tap payment and other modern amenities.
Then once the govt update the line in a few years with the high speed North-South Commuter rail line, I'd return here again and compare the experience. You'd experience one of the Asia-Pacific's worst train lines, to one of Asia's (hopefully) best. The North South line is being build with Japanese expertise I believe, so you could imagine how it will look once the whole line is renovated. I think they're 40% done in the countryside segment to the north of Manila. But for now, the current PNR is horrid :D If you can take a quick trip over here, you'd find the PNR vs LRT-MRT experience interesting.

The right-of-way looks wet, which makes track maintenance a nightmare. They would need lots of ballast and probably some sand or gravel beneath it for stability. In some places, they would need to put in tiles and drains to keep the water level manageable. And, of course, a work train, which they may not have. From the audio, they seem to have jointed rail in some places, which gradually works loose unless it's regularly maintained - usually by hand. Overall, the ride reminds me of the condition on the CNJ (Central Railroad of New Jersey) commuter main line in the early 1970s.

The majority of the route had been upgraded to a high-speed line but as we reached high-speed the train started a most disconcerting rocking movement. I suspect something was out of adjustment with the settings of the springs or dampers on the bogies. Fortunately this was only for a duration of about 50 minutes. None of my other experiences of the ICE have been on high-speed sections so I don't know if this is a regular occurrence but I would think it most unlikely.

Yes, I have taken train rides in Myanmar (Burma) also. Those trains really do shake, like being on a fairground ride 🤣🤣

I've been on meter gauge trains in East Africa that were just as shaky. The center of gravity is very low - the undercarriage has most of the weight so derailment isn't as imminent as it seems.

The train bogie is look like the bogie that I used to sit on 40 years ago in Thailand in the route from Bangkok (Wong wein yai) to Samutsakorn. That was very dangarous train , the door of the bogie was left open all the time of the trip when I was sitting 40 years ago. 😅

The train with diesel engines made in Thailand is my favorite. The train is innocent but the rails are so bumpy.

Seeing the carriages bounce around like that... Makes the class 142's look tame... You've gotta have an iron stomach to handle a ride like that

40 years ago I had a much worst experience with a train from Wau (in today's South Sudan) to Khartum althouhg not so wobbling. Today, after so many years of destruction, I guess no more train connection is working at all
