Yes, we did that trip too. It was wonderful. The Nam Tok waterfall only actually has water during the July and August wet season. The Bridge over the river Kwai is especially poignant for British, Dutch and Australians.
Not to mention all the anonymous Thai/Burmese slave labourers..they seem to be an afterthought for most people yet more of them died than all the other nationalities combined.
I did this in 2016 and also went for a boat ride along the river. The bridge is not the one that appeared in the movie as it was destroyed by American planes. The foundations are just visible and run parallel to the new bridge.
It was never the one in the movie. The old bridge was just a normal wooden trestle not a cantilever and the steel bridge was pretty much built alongside the trestle before it was destroyed in the 2nd bombing run which also took out 2 of the bowstring trusses on the steel bridge
In 2006 I road part of this train line including walking that bridge. More importantly as an Australian I also visited the WWII Cemetery. It was very moving to see the graves of so many of my countrymen! Their sacrifice not forgotten. The following day I was able to walk the small section of the Death Railway known as Hellfire Pass. It too was even more moving. I can recommend it!
Didn't take the special excursion train but used Kanchanaburi as a base to explore the region. Had a chance to walk both the River Kwai bridge as well as trestle bridge. Then took the afternoon commuter train from Nam Tok back to Thonburi station on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Terrific value for money, and a very good way to observe rural life in that part of Thailand.
I do like your travel vlogs, just discovered today. The handy factual and relevant detail appreciated. Generally toilets are more available (most are closed down in UK🙃). Worth carrying small quantity of soap, and emergency loo paper.

Enjoyable video. The famous Bridge on the River Kwai is better built and more sturdy than I would imagine it to be having been constructed by forced labour! Thanks for uploading.
I've visited Kanchanaburi, River Kwai, and The Hell Fire Pass in 2018. However, my friend who lives out in Thailand drove there as the timings weren't great and gave us more time at Kanchanaburi. I've also taken the train from Nakhon Pathom to Bangkok on the same type of train in this video.

Hey Non stop euro trip, I thoroughly enjoyed your videos. In the September 23, I had booked a train ticket in germany from Frankfurt Fern hbf to Weimar hbf. In those days the trains were a lot older and the toilets, well lets say 'not very attractive....' As i was travelling off-season it was -luckily- less crowded than in your video. But even those days people were walking on the tracks to get a glimpse of the train, filming with big cameras. I was able to travel tot the other side of the river as a was staying in one of the flaoting hotels. From ther you had a pefect view on the 'death valley railway' and th constructionj. But of course I was also aware of the black history berhind it. I also traveled by train to Nong Khai in the north of Thailand situated near the Mekong river. Daytrain to and nighttrain back. Those tripe were really adventures. Maybe you should try it one day instead of going to Chang Mai like everybody does. The north-east was far less touridtic which was very nice. Again thanx for this great video. Greetings from NL.

Sawadee krap !! I'm not on the tourist train side, so for those who want to make this trip ( and stay few days in Kanchanaburi ) on their own, head up to Thonburi railway station ( left side of Chao Praya river of Bangkok )...trains leave every day to Kanchanaburi.....by the way Indonesia is not far, that means you're gonna head the high speed train grand opening from Jakarta ? :)
Hi Bro, will you be travelling to Indonesia to try the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train that will open at the end of this year? Btw I'm your subscriber from Jakarta, Indonesia btw.
A little note. This is an excursion train departing Bangkok Hua Lamphong. There're also 6 regular services to Sai Yok departing from the old Thonburi Terminal ( The first and last train of the day departs and terminates at Nong Pladuk Junction on the sounthern line ) so don't confuse the 2 when you book the ticket. Obvious benefit of the excursion train is of course everyone has booked seat so the train isn't subjected to overcrowding which is a massive plus when you're trying to film or take photos of Tham Krasae trestle and the train itself is in much better shape than the regular 3rd class cars. Tho should you decide to stay in Kanchanaburi instead of doing the one day trip the regular trains will no doubt be more beneficial to you and if you miss out on the excursion ticket well there's the 2nd option for you. And if you choose to ride the regular trains the evening view on the 3pm train ( last train ) departing Sai Yok is pretty stunning especially when approaching Kanchanaburi the sun will be setting while running through fields with mountain backdrops
When you point out that there is no level boarding, I always wonder, would there be a couple of spry gentlemen I could impose on or hire to clean and jerk my chair onto the train? I could drag my own carcass in, but would need help with the chair? Thailand seems to be the sort of place one could find a few gentlemen for the quick task of loading or unloading help fairly economically?
the new station will only fix your problem at one point....it will be an issue at all of the stops. There's always people around to help and the Thai railway staff are very friendly and helpful. I'd be very confident it can all be sorted out for you. Around the stations can be pretty rough and ready,.....I hope you have an all-terrain chair :) good luck

@@mono2go OK, so it was big/little. That's what happens if you answer from memory ;)
But wasn't menam the word for river? or are those two different words like river and stream?
@@sethanix3969 yes! Many regional words meaning river here. Same as mountains

@@Gus-r1t Sorry, but no... Maybe read the Wikipedia article for the Death Railway?
Hint: The original bridge wasn't made of steel...
We took an AC train from Bangkok to Surat Tani, on our way to Koh Samui and it was a refrigerator, so cold we had to pull out that one warm sweater you bring on a trip like this. 😄 The advantage was that the cockroaches were really slow due to the cold and were easy to squish.
Oh wow!
