What a great trip and great experience. 17 days building that bridge at 1943 with terrain like this is definitely crazy.

A thoroughly beautiful and sensitively made video of such a place of nightmares for those who were forced labourers and who gave their lives there. It is from what I can see a very beautiful place. You are now not just a video blogger but are becoming a proper travel journalist - watch out Michael Portillo!

I did this in 2016 and also went for a boat ride along the river. The bridge is not the one that appeared in the movie as it was destroyed by American planes. The foundations are just visible and run parallel to the new bridge.

It was never the one in the movie. The old bridge was just a normal wooden trestle not a cantilever and the steel bridge was pretty much built alongside the trestle before it was destroyed in the 2nd bombing run which also took out 2 of the bowstring trusses on the steel bridge

Didn't take the special excursion train but used Kanchanaburi as a base to explore the region. Had a chance to walk both the River Kwai bridge as well as trestle bridge. Then took the afternoon commuter train from Nam Tok back to Thonburi station on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Terrific value for money, and a very good way to observe rural life in that part of Thailand.

In 2006 I road part of this train line including walking that bridge. More importantly as an Australian I also visited the WWII Cemetery. It was very moving to see the graves of so many of my countrymen! Their sacrifice not forgotten. The following day I was able to walk the small section of the Death Railway known as Hellfire Pass. I felt excited to shoot the beautiful nature through the train window. But, irony is that it is night journey train and no more trains after 8 hours for Weimar. Hello,
I made this kind of trip about 30 years ago, as part of a 3 week holiday in Thailand. So your video brought back a whole lot of good memories!!!!!!!
In those days the trains were a lot older and the toilets, well lets say 'not very attractive....' As i was travelling off-season it was -luckily- less crowded than in your video.
But even those days people were walking on the tracks to get a glimpse of the train, filming with big cameras. I was able to travel tot the other side of the river as a was staying in one of the flaoting hotels. From ther you had a pefect view on the 'death valley railway' and th constructionj. But of course I was also aware of the black history berhind it. I also traveled by train to Nong Khai in the north of Thailand situated near the Mekong river. Daytrain to and nighttrain back. Those tripe were really adventures.
Maybe you should try it one day instead of going to Chang Mai like everybody does. The north-east was far less touridtic which was very nice. Again thanx for this great video.
    Greetings from NL.

    @Astonyshing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I've been to the bridge and the cemetery, but on a bus tour not by train. Very moving. Accompanied by a number of Australians for whom the whole experience was very emotional.
As for train journeys in Thailand, I have only travelled between Bangkok and Ayutthaya (historical centre - very worth visiting). The train journey was, shall we say, functional☺. Very cheap though. Thailand meanwhile has some fascinating plans for developing high-speed rail services across much of the country. I hope to be alive still in order to be able to try them out at some time in the future!

I'm not on the tourist train side, so for those who want to make this trip ( and stay few days in Kanchanaburi ) on their own, head up to Thonburi railway station ( left side of Chao Praya river of Bangkok )...trains leave every day to Kanchanaburi.....by the way Indonesia is not far, that means you're gonna head the high speed train grand opening from Jakarta ? :)

When you point out that there is no level boarding, I always wonder, would there be a couple of spry gentlemen I could impose on or hire to clean and jerk my chair onto the train? I could drag my own carcass in, but would need help with the chair? Thailand seems to be the sort of place one could find a few gentlemen for the quick task of loading or unloading help fairly economically?

A little note. This is an excursion train departing Bangkok Hua Lamphong. There're also 6 regular services to Sai Yok departing from the old Thonburi Terminal ( The first and last train of the day departs and terminates at Nong Pladuk Junction on the sounthern line ) so don't confuse the 2 when you book the ticket. Obvious benefit of the excursion train is of course everyone has booked seat so the train isn't subjected to overcrowding which is a massive plus when you're trying to film or take photos of Tham Krasae trestle and the train itself is in much better shape than the regular 3rd class cars. Tho should you decide to stay in Kanchanaburi instead of doing the one day trip the regular trains will no doubt be more beneficial to you and if you miss out on the excursion ticket well there's the 2nd option for you. And if you choose to ride the regular trains the evening view on the 3pm train ( last train ) departing Sai Yok is pretty stunning especially when approaching Kanchanaburi the sun will be setting while running through fields with mountain backdrops

Another fun fact: The bridge is not on the original location, the wooden one was further downstream.
Yet another fun fact: The river it passes over wasn't called the Khwae until it became a tourist destination. The actual River Kwai is the one the railway follows upstream from Kanchanaburi. Yet in a typically Thai fashion they simply renamed it to Kwhae Yai - the New Kwai - and renamed the fork before the confluence to Kwhae Noi - the Old Kwai...

Why go on the excursion train ? Ordinary Train 257 from Thonburi Station, with 258 back is much better, especially for the rail fan, since is loco hauled. I know it only goes to Nam Tok, but Sai Yok does not add much to the trip. Those diesel units are not nice to travel in, the normal third class coaches are so much better, and if busy, will be with Thai people, and not tourists, Additionally, you don't have to pre-book, am surprised you didn't even give it a mention, since most folk only want to see the Bridge and the viaduct anyway, is only the short hop from Nam Tok to Sai Yok missed, and it is real Thai , not a tourist thing !

The imperial Japanese army built a monument for those that died building Thai Burma railways 1.5 year before the end of the war. But this monument is not well known. However the allies place nearby is well known and heavily promoted, telling people about the brutality of imperial Japanese military. When in fact, most people actually died from diseases and illnesses. History is written by the victors. Japan lost the war that’s why Japanese voice isn’t as loud as the allies.
Thailand also sent Phayap army to invade Burma and same thing happened, most Thai soldiers died from diseases and illnesses.

    • @johngodfrey8595
      @johngodfrey8595 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

The suffering experienced by prisoners of war who were forced to labour on the brutal Thai Burma railway during World War II is a grim reality that should not be forgotten. Captured by the Japanese, these men faced unspeakable horrors as they endured harsh conditions in the sweltering jungles.
Deprived of food and basic medical care, the POWs were pushed to their limits as they struggled to survive on minimal rations without access to essential medications or equipment. Medical officers had to work with limited resources, resulting in treatment methods that can only be described as primitive.
The POWs not only endured physical abuse but were also subjected to beatings and torture at the hands of their captors. The brutal living conditions and lack of adequate nutrition led to the spread of disease, with many deaths directly attributed to the starvation and mistreatment inflicted by the Japanese.
Despite the undeniable suffering of the POWs on the Thai Burma railway, the details of the atrocities committed by the Japanese during this time are often concealed from their own people. Japanese schools do not teach the truth about their country's actions in World War II, creating a blind spot in understanding and a failure to acknowledge the brutal conduct of their forebears.
It is crucial to acknowledge that the history of the Death Railway and the treatment of POWs is not a fabrication or distortion of facts concocted by allies. Those with personal connections to former POWs can attest to the harsh realities these men faced, and we have a responsibility to ensure that their memories and stories are preserved.
Those who ignore or minimise the suffering of the POWs are ignoring the realities of war, perpetuating ignorance and denial. We must confront the uncomfortable truths of history, no matter how painful, and honour the sacrifices made by the brave men who suffered and perished on the Thai Burma railway.
Approximate figures for groups involved in the construction of the Railway are as follows:
      - Malaya: 75,000 employed, 42,000 deaths
      - Burma: 90,000 employed, 40,000 deaths
      - Javanese: 7,500 employed, 2,900 deaths
      - Singapore: 5,200 employed, 500 deaths
The figures for the POWs are relatively accurate, as deaths were recorded at the time of passing. Despite the difficult circumstances, the command structure among the POWs allowed for accurate record-keeping.
      POW figures:
      - British: 30,131 employed, 6,904 deaths
      - Dutch: 17,990 employed, 2,782 deaths
      - Australian: 13,004 employed, 2,802 deaths
      - American: 686 employed, 131 deaths
These figures were sourced from the book "The Colonel of Tamarkan" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai."
