TENET || Gate Scene || 3D Breakdown with Theory

  • 3D visualization of the gate scene in Tenet.
    Theory about the collapsed tunnel included.
    little boo boo:
    Neil doesn't knock the gun out of the thug's hand. TP actually shoots him but runs out of ammo. then Ives gets up and reloads it.
    THE BULLET:
    The only official statement we have is from the actual script:
    Volkov PULLS HIS TRIGGER - but the Dead Tenet Soldier has
    ‘RISEN’ to be in front of the gun ‘ABSORBING’ the bullet -
    then LEAPING to one side, ALIVE -
    So he uses the word 'absorbing' here. Which means, from Neil's perspective it would un-absorb, or materialize, moments before being ripped from his head back to Volkov's gun.

    at 0:30 when the bomb goes off, the shockwave clears the entrance off the rocks. now when you reverse that, neil is simply sucked into the open entrance by the reversed shockwave. just like the protagonist was sucked into the freeport back at the plane crash site.

    Ok so here's my theory on Neil's body:
    I believe that it hasn't been sitting there since the beginning of time, rather the body spontaneously appeared at some point. Here's why:
    Neil describes being inverted in a non-inverted world as "swimming upstream". Imagine inverted matter has a sort of momentum, where it's entropy starts highly negative once it goes through a turnstile, but over time it loses the negative entropy and evens out to equilibrium with it's surroundings (like an ice cube melting or a hot poker slowly cooling). Therefore the inverse entropy will slowly reduce, hit zero, then start accumulating regular non-inverse entropic radiation.
    If you take this theory to it's logical conclusion, what happens when an object with negative entropy reaches loses that entropy and starts accumulating regular entropy?
    Well, we actually have seen multiple examples of that happening. Every time someone goes into a turnstile, their entropy is flipped. What you see depends on your perspective. You either see two people spontaneously appear out of thin air (like what Neil and TP first see at the airport), or you watch two people disappear into thin air (like Sator after the car chase). Something that abruptly stops traveling forwards in time would seem to disappear, and something that spontaneously stops moving backwards in time and begins traveling forwards would appear out of nowhere at that point.
    So depending on your perspective, if you wait around long enough you will either see Neil's body disappear (if you are inverted) or you will see his body spontaneously appear out of nowhere (if you are not inverted).

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      I like this explanation. But I wonder about the gold that gets sent back. That implies the it takes a loong time before it reverts back. Priya says it was generations from now that the came up with the Algorithm. So the bad guys from the future must have inverted the gold then, to stream back. Unless they can somehow boost the radiation or something.

    • @tb45g
      @tb45g 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill That's a good point, I'm guessing they could surround the package with some material that inhibits the entropic radiation, like a lead-lined box.

      @SandalwoodBros 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill I thought the same thing when watching the movie. If an inverted bullet stuck in a normal (non-inverted) wall spontaneously appears at some point before being 'sucked' out by an inverted gun (like the bullet hole in the opera scene), that means from their inverted perspective, they must fade out of existence at some point (the same thing but in reverse). But we are also told that items from far in the future travel back to the present without fading away. This is definitely a contradiction in the movie.

    • @unknowna1
      @unknowna1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill:
      Perhaps it would have to do with the quality of gold itself; it's already known for being extremely resistant to corrosion, perhaps it's also resistant to change in entropy (which can be overcome with turnstiles, but not as easy to naturally reverse on its own, just like gold won't corrode on its own in a long time, but can easily be broken down with aqua regia).

    something crazy I didn't notice at first is that when Red team sees Blue team first arriving at the battle in reverse at about 2:01:07 (the end of the battle for Blue team), they see someone being carried on a stretcher. I was really confused about the gate scene because if Neil died in reverse and his dead body is just traveling backwards, then that begs the question when does his body appear there from the forward perspective? it seems like it would have to materialize out of thin air or reverse decompose or something. but what makes the most sense is that Blue team already knows Neil died and therefore goes back to retrieve his body at the end of their mission (and the beginning of red's). So from the forward perspective, the first thing you would see is blue team reverse carrying a stretcher to the gated area, dumping it, then leaving. shortly after that Volkov arrives, followed by TP and Ives

    There are only two possible explanations for the fate of the bullet in Neil's head:
    either it was a pass-through shot (closing the wound as passing through the inverted head, so Neil can happily back-hopping away to the entrance while the others keep fighting),
    OR Neil's head acted as turnstile for the bullet (presumingly the effect on a little regular mass in a big chunk of inverted one): following the regular flow of time, in the past of the cave, the undisturbed Neil's corpse spontaneously assemble from the environment with the bullet in its wound; the bullet being inverted as all the rest; then, at the right moment, Neil rises back to life and straight in front of the door to receive the incoming regular bullet; the two bullets (regular and inverted) rejoin and disappear into the past (mirrored pair from the past, merge and disappear; mirrored pair from the future, appear and split).
    I find the 2nd hypothesis more consistent with the narrative of the movie because otherwise the whole universe-large sequence could have been possible ONLY if the bullet was a pass-through. The physical pattern (call it cause-effect, past-fututre, or here now - there then) of the entire universe should be bound to a small local pattern, which is not what we see elsewhere.
    The turnstile effect must be part of the narrative and indeed there are some references in the movie to that effect: a couple of times it's explained (Neil, Wheeler, ...) that reversed object travel against the pushing flow of the regular enviroment:
    "But because the environment essentially flows in our direction we dominate. They're always swimming upstream. It's what saved your life. Inverted explosion was pushing against the environment. Pissing in the wind."
    This, logically, must be true the other way around: if submerged in an inverted environment, a regular object travels "upstream"... until, if it's small enough, it is reversed to follow the flow.
    I'd add: Neil didn't know he was going to die in the cave at the time he "decided" to go reversed to open the door and The Protagonist was unsure whether to tell him. Niel might have guessed he was going to die by not seeing himself hopping back out from the cave moments before extracting his friends from the hole and the explosion, but the main entrance was out of sight, so...

    Still love thinking about this movie. People were discussing the part where forward Neil would have the bullet in his head until he inverted and then was unshot, but I think it makes more sense if you have the bullet penetrate his helmet/head (maybe even at a different angle due to impact w the helmet going in). That way, when he gets unshot, it's just like when Sator shot Kat with the inverted round: the bullet flies out of the wall in the cave, pierces through Neil's head, killing him, and back into Volkov's gun.

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      that would be the most simplest way to avoid the whole thing. even if it was stuck inside his helmet on the other side of his head.
      I have plenty of other Tenet videos on the channel, but in the script, it does say exactly what happens. The bullet goes into his head and is "Absorbed".
      So, from Neil's perspective, everything is fine. And then suddenly, a bullet "un-Absorbs" in his head and is ripped out back to Volkov's gun.
      Why does it do this? Not sure, unfortunately.

Then he switches to moving forward in time to try to warn Ives and the Protagonist (at the same time he's doing this, he's still with the blue team, moving backwards through time, just like the Protagonist fought himself earlier in the movie.) When he fails to warn them in time, he lowers the rope for Ives and the Protagonist to grab on to and pull them out. After he pulls them out and they have their final conversation, he realizes that the random guy who opened the gate could ONLY have been himself, so he inverts himself AGAIN, to go backwards in time, opens the gate for Ives and the Protagonist, and takes the bullet to save them, finally dying. That's the best understanding of it I have, and as best I can explain it anyway.

    I love your video! Makes things very clear and your theory about how he enters the blasted tunnel is creative and smart as well! But I am not sure whether it really works out concerning the time he has to get into the tunnel.
    I'd like to add some time stamps so to say to some crucial moments. Let's not make it too complicated and just pretend there is just one clock starting at 0:00 with the red team starting their mission (blue team being exfiltrated) and lasting 10 minutes until 10:00 when the explosion goes off and the blue team starts their mission (red team being exfiltrated). So halfway through the battle at around 5:00 both teams are at the entrance to the cave which will be blasted a few seconds later when the Protagonist and Ives enter. So they both leave the cave through the hole in the roof seconds before the explosion goes off. When Ives finally enters Neil runs out of the cave. This should be at around 9:00.
    Now you aren't specific about whether the blue team that opens the tunnel is the regular blue team or another blue splinter unit just like Ives and the Protagonist are for the red team. Let's discuss both possibilities. But first of all let's clear that in order for this whole operation to work neither the enemy must notice that there is someone else entering the tunnel because they could adapt their own temporal pincer movement to this. They have think they won. They have to think no one took the algorithm. Also this splinter unit of Neil's must not be seen by the other Tenet agents including himself (his younger self) and the Protagonist and Ives in order for his younger self to run off to invert himself to get the car to pull out his mates out of the cave in the first place.
    Now let's assume it's the regular blue team reopening the tunnel: From Neil's perspective the latest moment he has to enter is at 9:00 or if we follow what I wrote first maybe even at 9:30 because he is moving backwards through time. From his perspective the explosion goes off and moments later he enters the tunnel. This is impossible for the blue team to make because they need 4 to 5 minutes to get to the entrance at about 6:00 or 5:00 from the perspective of the blue team. At around 9:00 the regular blue team is still running down the hill (red team running up). So it can't be the regular blue team helping him there. It's either him alone or maybe he is supported by 2-3 other agents who are part of another splinter unit. All of them would have to be inverted of course. To conclude it doesn't make sense that the regular blue team reopens the cave because they are simply too slow to do so. Also Neil and the rest of the team would have been briefed before the operation that they had to do something against it. That's obviously not the case as he improvises when he sees that the entrance is trapped. Neither the red or blue team are aware that the entrance will blow up in the first place.
    This brings us to the 2nd possibilty that Neil alone or Neil with 2-3 other agents might be another splinter unit no one knows about which is there minutes before the regular blue team arrives. Your theory could still work if we assume that Neil and his team run off for the turnstile in Stalsk. Then they could go there at 14:00 (4 minutes after the operation ended) and they had 5 minutes to get to the tunnel and open it. But I find this hard to believe because from what we know Stalsk was under control of Sator BEFORE and AFTER this whole operation. Keep in mind that it's Sators home in a way and most of the events of the movie take place after this event. It happens at the same time as the opera scene. So a younger Sator (who didn't die yet) knows that there will be an explosion as Michael Cain's character does too. He just has to defend the place for ten minutes because there are no Tenet agents before and after. So at 14:00 it's under his control and his mercenaries are preparing for Tenet to engage. I don't think that Neil and up to 3 agents would have been able to use the turnstile at this moment as it is his most important way to fight his enemies. It's a completely other thing when Neil inverts himself there DURING the fight because the incoming red and blue team distract the enemy so he can do it.
    MY THEORY:
    Like that I come to the conlcusion that Neil has to invert himself on that Tenet ship again and actually start off before the blue team does because he needs more time. Maybe he gets there pretty close with another car or just sneak in from the side while the incoming red and blue team distract the enemy. So he waits and when the moment is right he starts his operation. We know that he is good in sneaking from the opera scene and as well his first move in Stalsk getting into the Turnstile and getting the car.
    My idea is that he actually used a NON inverted explosive to get in while he is inverted. In general an explosive is effective and fast as he doesn't have time to completely clear the entrance by hand. Let me explain: In the beginning of the movie we see the Protagonist use an inverted gun whitch catches the bullet. When an inverted person uses a normal weapon it works the same way from his perspective. It's just the other way around. It doesn't matter what kind of explosive it is but maybe let's just pick a rocket launcher to compare it to a gun.
    So from his perspective Neil is running to the entrance (at 9:00 or something like that) with an EMPTY (!) rocket launcher and there is already a (tiny) hole in the entrance to get in. So he enters, turns around and then points the launcher into the direction of the entrance, he pulls the trigger of the launcher and he catches the rocket from the debris that was there before (at around 8:30). Like that he will reclose the entrance again like nothing happened. At 8:00 he will be in the cave itself.
    Let me make this clearer from the perspective of someone who is NOT inverted and is watching from the outside. This will help a lot understanding this. This observer would see (if he gets close enough) from minute 5:00 to 7:59 that there is just a closed entrance. But suddenly at 8:00 there would be an explosion from the inside reopening the entrance. Then there would a person (Neil) getting out of the entrance inverted (!) running backwards with an empy rocket launcher (which he just used) and run away.
    Neither the enemies nor the red and blue team will notice any of this. For the red team this will happen when they are already 3 minutes further to the exfiltration point up the hill. So this will happen way later for them. 2 minutes later at 10:00 the huge explosion in the cave will take place covering up Neil's hide and seek operation and there will be no chance to notice any of this has happened. For team blue there would be a visible hole from 10:00 to 8:00 in reverse but they only get there at 6 or something like that. Because at 8 any evidence will vanish just like for Neil himself: In the moment he pulls the trigger the entrance will just be like before.

      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill Thank you for appreciating! Yeah, hard to make things about Tenet short :D It really is kind of a "plot hole" there. Not necessarily in a negative way because one has to think for himself but this one is really hard. It's just too much that is unclear. To be honest I don't think my theory is what Nolan had in mind because then he would have at least teased it. It would have been some kind of beautiful movie composition because in the very beginning a non inverted Neil saved the Protagonist with an inverted gun and with this it would be the other way around kind of closing the loop.
      I would love to get a Tenet 2 with Denzel Washington playing the older version of the Protagonist who founded Tenet in the first place. Would be great to see Denzel guiding Neil and Neil meeting the young Protagonist for the first time when he is recruited. Great moment would be if Denzel and John David met somewhere in the middle for some final exchange.

    1) Bullet on the other side of him
    2) It's coming towards him and *creates* a hole in the back of his head
    3) It's through him and *creates* the hole in the front of his head
    4) It goes into the gun
    From normal time perspective, everything is backwards:
    1) The gun is shot
    2) The hole in the front of his head is *"healed"*
    3) The hold in the back of the head is *"healed"*
    4) The bullet is through him now
    In essence, shooting the gun through his head "heals" him from the normal time perspective, and he would not need to have a hole or a bullet in his head for his entire lifetime up until that point. Which is what we see, in forward time the gun is shot, inverted Neil stands up, and reverse runs out.
    I guess the only question that is debatable (and genuinely so) is if a bullet could actually pass through a head like that. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and call it science fiction. But theoretically, if the bullet passes cleanly through him, the logic works.

    The part missing from this diagram and only glanced over in the movie is that, from Neil’s prospective, he runs in and sees the protagonist, Ives, and Sator’s man locked in the room. Neil picks the lock to get in. Then he waits for TP and Ives to get out of the room, at which point Neil closes and locks the door behind him. Lastly, he is shot in the head. He never knows about Ives get knocked out. His mission is to pick the lock to get himself in, and lock the door so that in forward time he is unlocking the door.

The risk it's too big...
      Since he knew from Ives and TP that the door under the cave was close until somebody "opened" it (from the audience and TP's POV) so, inverted Neil has to close the door (From his POV) in order from the protagonist's POV will appear that the Inverted Tenet Agent opened the door..

    Trying to fully understand how the inverted-normal matter interact is futile, you cannot make sense of what is, essentially, a paradox.
    For example, the conversation across the turnstile window, it's not just that the other person is talking backwards, they are answering your questions before you make them.
    Or, if you send something through the turnstile and it goes past (I mean, before) the moment the turnstile was created (as it is the case for the instructions to build the first turnstile), in which moment does it "appear" from a forward time observer? Does it go all the way to the Big Bang?
    Also, besides not being able to breath "non inverted" air, light is going backwards too! you're essentially blind after going through the turnstile.
    Enjoy the movie for what it is, an amazing soft-sci-fi action-thriller, and don't think too much about the details because it will f*ck your mind even more.

    As I see it, Neil actually didn’t die. If you think about it, with him being in the reverse timeline the bullet would have already had to be in his head in order to be able to jump back into the gun. Just like with the stab wound which suddenly appeared and healed in reverse only that for him with a bullet penetration in his head it would be fatal. So he would be dead already when he holds the door open and that’s obviously not possible. Instead, I think that the bullet gets somehow stopped by his helmet and never actually enters his head and kills him, that’s the only way this could work out of his pov. An indication for that is that he unlocks the door after he appears to get shot, or in his pov, he locks the door after the bullet jumps back into the gun, which means that he has to be alive in order to do so. If you’re asking yourself why he has to and does lock the door in his timeline / pov in order to unlock it in the protagonists pov, that’s a whole different story to explain which would make this comment for to long. But in conclusion, I would say Neil is not actually dead because this scene otherwise would not work and Nolan actually left a clue which supports this thesis, by making Neil act (unlock the door) (protagonists pov) when he actually should be nothing but a lifeless corps.

      Neil is most likely dead. A face mask full of blood can be seen.
      You are correct that you cannot be Dead before you are Alive. That is a Grandfather Paradox and the universe just doesn't allow it.
      Protagonist's wound slowly forms as it approaches the moment it is unstabbed and healed.
      Neil's head wound cannot do so slowly( you can't be dead before you are alive). So it instead forms instantly at the moment the bullet is fired and kills him in the direction of his own entropy, forward for him, but observed inverted for us.
      I tried to explore it in this video.

    From Neil's perspective when he came he pushed the door.
    door gets automatically unlocks due to inverse entropy of Neil (same as bullet moves before touching it; now neil is reverse so from his perspective lock and door is inversed).
    After opening door he comes inside allowes both to go behind door locks door, takes inverse bullet and dies. (He lockes door; here it means he follows procedure of unlocking in reverse way as he had the same practice many times before e.g. at Freeport of Oslo)
    So no any Paradox or something.

    From Volkov's perspective: The bullet came through the first layer of the helmet, went through Neil's skull, and stop inside Neil's helmet.
    From Neil's perspective: he felt a reversing bullet forming inside his helmet, went back through his skull, backing through the first layer of his helmet, and went back to Volkov gun.
    That's why PT didn't die when standing aligning with Neil.
    And why Neil never felt a scar or headache several years before the event (because if the bullet stayed inside his head, which made him dead, the past of him will felt some headache cuz scar and the wound would have started to form in his head -> so the bullet went through -> so he didn't die! . This just like the event of reversing PT got stapped at the airport, he first got some blood dropped, felt the stapping, and immediately no scratch when that stapping undone!)
    At the end of the film which the time flows inversing in Neil's perspective: He felt unconscious cuz the impact of the reversing bullet.
    If we go forward on his timeline, you then see him waking up for like a couple of hours later - the before of everything happened - leaving the place, thus no one ever sees a corpse, or a skeleton or a dead body there to become cautiously and thus alerting the upcoming raid!

    This is almost correct. At 0:18, you show that Neil unlocks the door. This would mean, from Neil's perspective, he locks the door. That doesn't make much sense. There is no need for Neil to lock the door after already letting the Protagonist and Ives through the gate. Not to mention, he would not be able to lock it after taking the shot in the head. In truth, Neil locking that door was an accident.
    If you watch the actual scene again, the door unlocks by itself (from the Protagonist's perspective). You can hear and see the latch unlock, and no one is touching the latch when it happens. This is because as Neil takes the shot in his time frame, he accidently pushes/falls on the door. This momentum pushes the door shut. As the door closes, it locks itself. The door's latch has to be self-locking. If you have the time, view the scene again and let me know what you think

    The biggest issue seems to be: the way they presented the bullet vs the way they presented the knife.
    When TP gets stabbed with a knife, he has the wound before that gets healed with the stab. (in inverted time)
    When Neil gets shot, he shows no indication of having a hole in his head before the stab (in his inverted time)
    Basically the movie's logic works one way in one case, and another way in another case.
    since it's unreasonable to expect Neil to walk around with a hole in his head, it's the knife scene that should be changed.
    in inverted time, ITP gets knifed, then heals over time.
    In forward time, the ITP is already injured, and when he gets stabbed, it heals his wound.
    If you were stabbed with an inverted knife, you'd just heal over time
    From the inverted time POV you'd already be injured and then the stab would heal you.
    This way it's consistent in both directions, from either one's PoV.
    I really think the knife scene is the one that created this inconsistency, though it might have been done that way to cover for some other paradox I can't think of.
    However, essentially travel forward and backward in time and both of them interacting is impossible. Like, mathematically impossible. I tried creating simulations of particles that run both backwards and forwards in time and it just creates an unsolvable equation where you need to know the future, to know what's going to happen now, and it's literally impossible to simulate something like this. So I'm not surprised the movie has some unsolved paradoxes that would only be solved essentially by magic.

    • @arsilvora8660
      @arsilvora8660 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the knife case, TP is inverted and gets 'unknifed' so he heals. In Neil's case, he is inverted but he doesn't get 'unshot'...he gets shot in inverted sense. The gun is maybe inverted or maybe thats how gun works with inverted objects (just how TP and Neil's car's side view mirror develops cracks and get straightened after getting hit with inverted car in car chase scene). That is why there is no question of him feeling any pain. Make sense?
