    I've had the pleasure of working with her on this actual show in the fall of 2007. Her version of this aria is my favorite. She was awesome to work with on stage also. During a performance she turned to the chorus and asked if we would all like to go and cook some hotdogs. Now someone that can just have fun on stage and turn around and sing like this, I have the greatest respect for.

    Oh for Heavens' sake! The way that this artist achieves her tone separation and vibrato is insignificant. LISTEN to the vocal quality, the intonation, the breath control, the pitch placement of her voice, the timing. Hell! She is where she is in her career; and the complainers about the techniques she uses to achieve what makes her so remarkable and talented are where you are in mediocre obscurity for a reason. She has world class talent! You do not! Brava Madam Vivica.

      Whether someone has talent or not has no bearing on whether they can notice it in others, or notice how they cheat to appear more proficient than they are. Even if she produced her sound with a beauty of clean technique, which she does not, the end result is also not beautiful. Her voice cracks and shudders, she splits her tone between her upper, middle and low register, she is seen in other video clips to crouch her body to reach low notes and stretch her neck to reach high ones, and she literally skips notes to breathe because she has run out in the middle of a phrase. She is not using her diaphragm, it is a basic fundamental error. Whether she makes strange faces or not, she is still achieving only a bastardised approximate version of the art by not bothering to get out of the cheats and bad habits that she's coasted on until now. If she used correct technique and didn't sing from the back of her throat, relying on her face to make a fake vibrato out of this shallow tone, she could have been something unearthly. But as she is now, her singing is the equivalent of a piano player approximating a good performance by attaching miniature rubber mallets to his toes and striking the keyboard with them.

    "elle se rattrape ..." very interesting what you mention Xxxavier. I have always the crazy impression she's totally at ease when she sings the most difficult coloratura one can imagine, as if virtuosity was totally natural for her. Once she sang a concert when she was ill (thank God she didn't cancel!), but she had only problems during the slow parts - when it became virtuoso, her illness seemed like blown away!

    Thx Wienerfr for this very nice program!
    I don't have to repeat how much I adore Vivica's singing. I think she's perfect for Rossini, however, I personally (being a Handel maniac) prefer her definitely in the baroque repertoire. I think, for Rossini there are so many other singers who can do it in a different way, sing the coloratura parts less exactly, and it's still somehow OK. But BAROQUE NEEDS HER exact way of singing, her extremely clean transition between the notes, her unique trills :-))

    I love this voice. I really don't care what her lips do because it obviously works for her, but I am curious about mannerisms like this and when they develop....Battle's lips, etc...I'm sure that Tajo never taught her that nor did Zeani the lip thing to Genaux...but still, it happens. It also seems to be such an inseparable part of the technique. If it ain't broke? Anwyay, I think Genaux is fabulous and I just appreciate that she's willing to give us her talents!

  • @asianfil
    @asianfil 11 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    She's actually the first opera singer I've seen that moves both her upper & lower lips as fast & in sync as her voice... It bothered me at first but then her voice is too great that such an issue becomes irrelevant! As long as she delivers such a great exceptional performance, that's what counts.... :-)

    • @Hawatt11
      @Hawatt11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many do, and many do not. It isn't necessary for all, but if it helps, why not. I always simply "rode my vibrato" which like a lot of coloratura mezzos is pretty fast. It made the cadenzas really easy, but sustained romantic pieces are more of a challenge.

    @SkateNater Watch the video if you want to see the tension. Look at her mouth. If it works for her, fine, more power to her. But a lot of her fans on this page aren't doing her any credit by acting like she isn't doing strange things with her mouth.

    where do you hear a loss of her line? i certainly do not. perhaps you are confusing what you see with a cause rather than an effect? just because her mouth is moving does not necessarily mean that she is causing it to move voluntarily.

    wow.....what an astonishingly steel-technique! Truly impressive. It's the first time i see someone singing with this lip-spasm thing to distinguish the notes or create a more precise and controlled vibrato.....but...well, let's say i prefer listening to her while she sings, rather than looking at her while she sings.

    I assume it is lower-jaw tension and tension in the muscles surrounding the mouth and nose. It, however, doesn't seem to hinder her singing at all. Now instead of comments on the visual, how about the auditory? That is why we listen to singers, after all...If you just wanna see pretty ones, I suggest pop.

    It's not always about the technique... singers might or might not have mannerisms, but, if the voice and overall presentation rocks your body and soul, if it gets you in a unexpected and amazing way, it`s fine... besides... there's no any unique and right truth...
    Let's be more openminded people...

    Of course those comments are prissy; if you give gold to some people they will complain it is too heavy. People who are happy with themselves and with what they do are much more kind in their comments. Normally the "prissy" comments tell us much more about the one who posts them than about the artist they seem to envy so much.

    Kind of reminds me of Dutch soprano Cristina Deutekom. Very unorthodox technique for coloratura. Deutekom used her larynx somehow....Genaux seems to use her lips and mouth. It works for her.

    I don't think the comments about her jaw are prissy at all; the crazy tension in her mouth is manifested in the sound. The speed of her coloratura is really fantastic, but the tone is so driven and hard. Her lips make an O that pulses with her vibrato, for gods sake- not even Bartoli does that. I had to rewatch that to believe that I had actually seen it. I sure do like her Mozart and Vivaldi more than this.

    For sound like that, I could care less what's 'flapping', jaw or lips ... NO ONE can do the justice this woman does to Rossini or Donizetti today in the mezzo roles. I only wish we could hear her in Anna Bolena as Giovanna Seymor ~ I could listen to her all day - It may not be sound " technique" to your training, but the end result is as they say 'the proofs in the pudding"! BRAVA!~

  • @Alexmeister25
    @Alexmeister25 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    She has a technique that uses the jaw, but the sound is wonderful and listen to the sound that comes out that is beautiful and not her jaw and Cecilia Bartoli that I love very much has the technique of using the body and the rostom faces that many do not like, this is not a parade of miss universe and the important thing is the music and the sound of the voice and each one has its technique but the final result that for those who did not like it is the music and not the physical appearance.

    I couldn't resist her command of the piece, her musicality and gorgeous smile - but I worry about and am distracted, like you, by the wobbly jaw and lips on the high notes. They sound great; but it's as if she can only sing those notes by releasing all the tight jaw control she uses for all the coloratura, creating this odd 'flapping about'/loss of jaw control. There's not time to really relax, so she carries much up with her. So did the brilliant M. Horne, but she kept it inside.

    • @frogmouth

  • @judycadana

    @everyone-- I don't dislike her; but I do dislike watching her sing. However, if I could have a big career by using an oddball technique, even if it meant permanently ruining my voice, I wouldn't hesitate. Lots of people say the same of Jonas Kauffman, but what price wouldn't I pay to sing the works he is singing. Who knows if Genaux is damaging her voice; she is having a real career, weird lips and all.

  • @zimnaya
    @zimnaya 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mireille Delunsch's asinine comment that she had always wanted to die on stage, that having given and experienced 'something so intense and profound' that she really wished to die - 'it would have been the nost beautiful moment of my life' - how second-rate and histrionic. Profoundly shocking.

    @MisterPapageno I don't understand your point, but Genaux must not be all about money or she would stop making that weird mouth position since it makes her look odd on camera. it's a shame because she is very beautiful and yet has strong features so as not to look silly in a pants role. With Genaux, better I should listen and not see, as opposed to Hunt-Lieberson who must be seen as well as heard to be fully appreciated.
