All these experts saying poor technique. Hahaha. She has had a great career singing over twenty years. Just because you don't like her, say so. Every singer figures out the way to sing for themselves. Their body, vocal cords etc. She figured out what works for her. Great I say.
The same was said of Bartoli who's technique is unorthodox...it works for her and she learned that technique from her mother and has always sung that way. Her breath support is much higher than the way that the old Italian school teaches...yet she sings things nobody else can.
Thanks for people who love and still defend classical (and Vivaldi). The interpretation is breathtaking : powerful and original, watching the live on FR3, it gave me goosebumps.
i am not a singer and i don't care how this is supposed to be done technically. But i love the baroque opera and i realize how difficult this must be. I love the way she does it!!! for me, as a member of the audience, it transported me. i am simply mesmerized by this aria and the execution. Bravaaaaa!!!!
cecilia bartoli perform this one fare better and without this tricks wich is clearly not the best technics and the easyest to perform this song.... th-cam.com/video/qEc6R3razpw/w-d-xo.html
I got to sing with her and talk with her when she returned to her hometown for an opera concert (we both grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska) It was an absolute honor and she is a delightful person.
I don’t think it’s so much the vibrato she’s having trouble with. It’s firing off 5 16th notes in one bout that’s getting the best of her! 🤣😂 But damned if she didn’t pull it off! If you were just listening and not watching, we’d probably be none the wiser. 😉
Viveca Genaux is an artist of the highest order. I've seen her several times recently in concert in San Francisco and Berkeley, and her voice is even more spectacular in person. Contrary to many comments below, her voice is improving with age. It has an amazing range and sparks with a thousand colors! She is just entering her prime. Brava!
Her voice really has a deep sentimental matice, even she is doing great agilities, which delivers a magistral performance of this so dificult aria; wonderful interpretation and wonderful voice all in a beautiful young lady...MARAVILLOSA!!!!
I love to see this video before going to sleep :) There's the same concert of Vivica - Agitata realized in Köln. But, in my appreciation this is the best :) Not just the movement of the lips, How she can give life the partiture so preciseley! Bartoli is precious yes, but L'Agitata for a Mezzo sounds stronger. Bartoli, doesn't risk anything in the word "naufragar", Vivica does, she doesn't hesitate in mantaining the sound of deep desperation of the "due venti". I like it a lot. THANKS Wienerfr!!!
Compliments for Vivica Genaux for this extreme difficult aria. This lady is IN FULL CONTROL,both regarding voice and with the orchestra.Bravo! I am deeply impressed. P.S. How can there be 134 negative comments? These voters only pay attention to what they see and NOT to what can be heard. They are clearly outsiders.Pity they can give their negative opinion when it is not right. Why don't they "play" elsewhere and criticize non-classical singers(e.g. Patricia Kaas). Vivica Genaux is a genius.
Espectacular intrerpretacion. Bravo Vivica, has ganado la medalla de oro.
Thank you for your kind post. I was lectured last night on Caffarelli practising before the looking-glass to eradicate 'ugly grimaces'. I still maintain, as you yourself do, that the sound and beauty of the voice are the most important aspects in singing. Based on that criteria, Madame Genaux is magnificent.
Extraordinary skill! The best interpretation I have seen of one of the most difficult aria ever written. Bravo! Is it even better than Sumi Jo's interpretation? I think yes.
This is one of the repertoire's most difficult arias to sing, and Ms. Genaux goes through it with great intelligence and skill. She doesn't always do these jaw movements, this is just very, very difficult. Brava Vivica!
You don't get to hear this kind of voice now adays~! oh wait...we we can~! Amazing....What a great pefrormer, and a brilliant timber. Thanks for the poost.
The most wonderful voice and timbre, great agility, and great balance between her chest and head voice. Such a level of mastery anyone with ears should able to hear how comfortable she is in her production. Nevermind her facial movements, they are not tricks or vocal tension, but just a habit/byproduct that frankly should be none of your concern.Anyone who feels clever saying "vavava" i would invite to listen without looking. You are being fooled by your eyes, it's obvious listening to it that there is no consonants thrown into her coloraturas whatsoever. If you can't use your ears, I don't know what business you have commenting on an opera video frankly.
I agree, it is difficult to properly enunciate the lyrics without shaping the lips the way she does. The technique of the coloratura is among the most difficult to master, and she does so quite spectacularly! She gave a performance worthy of Vivaldi himself!
Funny the way some insignificant people gratuitously attack great artists, but can't bear to be put in their place.Even funnier when they try to play the victim while they're the rude uneducated ones, who've been pathetically trying to spit their venom at great artists out of frustration,or is it jealousy? Let's see if they have accomplished 0.1%of what the artists they attack have in say... 20 years.Thank again Vivica for sharing your gift with us. HeartSong90,grow up,you have so much to learn!
Una voz versátil y con muy buen registro grave. no es común verlo en voces ligeras. Una afinación más exacta que la mayoría de las versiones conocidas.
I'm glad I don't know as much about music as those who are writing bad reviews. So I can enjoy both Genaux and Bartoli, in the same way I can enjoy a good wine but also a better one.
I wander if all of you who make comments about technique have even attempted to sing this...It is probably one of the hardest things written and surviving it and being able to even sing the notes is an achievement on its own. And please, Cecilia also looks funny when she sings it and she was not the first one even who sang it..So good job Vivica
got to love the faces she pulls ha it is hard to do vibrato as well as pitch changing passages listen to sumi jo sing this haa no ugly faces and perfect pitch with pure vibrato just amazing
This is Vivaldi’s 3rd to last Opera. He was in a much more advanced stage of composing by this point. His concerti were noticeably intricate with much more complexity and color than his earlier, typical pieces we all know
@Serinia4melodic aha, true, it is easier for a lot of people, and it is for people who either can't do vibrato from the diaphragm but mostly it is a lot more noticeable as it is much stronger in the sound of it, and thats why a lot of people use it because 'normal' vibrato can often be left unheard so a piece sounds rather empty
BRAVO VIVICA ! Antonio T.
Ouah t'as pas tardé toi!!!!!! Once again, perfectly brilliant Vivica!... In more of a normal tempo than what she did @ TCE, but flawless and powerful, the Vivica way wed all better get used to :))))))
She's using her lower lip to rhythmically accentuate the fast notes, especially the notes repeated on one pitch. Bartoli's technique, I agree, is much sounder.
Looking back over a long career in music, I'd say that technique is a means to an end. Here, I think the "end" is would be a musical, beautiful, artistic performance. None of the artists represented on u-Tube perform this flawlessly, but certainly give us some beautiful moments.Techniques are also what make us able to get through the music without damaging our bodies. Some give us one kind of artistic satisfaction at the expense of another. I love all those here for their crowning moments.

Totally agree.
I got to sing with her and talk with her when she returned to her hometown for an opera concert (we both grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska) It was an absolute honor and she is a delightful person.
It's the first time I see melismas and vibrato produced with the lips! o.O
I don’t think it’s so much the vibrato she’s having trouble with. It’s firing off 5 16th notes in one bout that’s getting the best of her! 🤣😂 But damned if she didn’t pull it off! If you were just listening and not watching, we’d probably be none the wiser. 😉
