You could tell because the upper mid range is very colored, you can tell it right away. Plus I remember commentary on her biographical film, she wasn’t happy with his performance. Still amazing though
And the people still cheered. She was perfection, and her worst day was better than some people’s best days

you know, I do love Callas and this was a lovely rendition - but there are so many other equally as wonderful renditions. Every one of them is different and exciting, and the contrasts can be amazing! The Mezzos have their own charm(and it was written for a mezzo) - but I prefer the sopranos! The bird like perfection of Roberta Peters, the sheer beauty and flexibility of Anna Moffo, the total joy and charm of Beverly Sills.....I could never decide which I like the best - and I don't have to!

As much as I love Maria, I do not like her in this opera. She is to dramatic, to dark even though this aria and character calls for lightness. Entire "Il barbiere di Siviglia" is light and delicate, delicious arias full of life and frivolity with playfulness. I really like Anna Moffo in this role, who gives it lightness and elegance. That is only my personal view and feelings.
