    Fascinating first ride review....without the usual 'popular' bias that we see so often. But as a 65 year old VStrom 650 owner, I'll just stay over here in the corner in my rocking chair and try not to bother anyone. 😉

    Your style of review is so good at summarising a bikes character. I fancied a Himalayan and your summary matched my requirements, so I bought one. Strange thing is, I don`t fancy one of these, but still watched anyway. You talk nothing but sense, and that is appealing.

    I keep posting on videos praising my 2014 VStrom 1000. I bought it in 2016 as a 2-year old leftover. Suzuki had a huge rebate ($4000 in the US I think). I paid about $8500 for it. I was getting older, and I told my wife it would probably be my last new bike. 8 years and 40,000 miles later, and I have not bought another new bike. I’ve bought a few inexpensive used ones 😊. My bike has a wet weight of 504 pounds according to Suzuki. The new 800 weighs a few pounds more. The 1000 has fully-adjustable suspension and really good brakes. In all the years I’ve owned it, I haven’t found another bike with the same level of suspension, brakes and engine for anywhere near the price. Last week the clutch slave cylinder gasket needed replaced. That’s the first non-wear item it’s needed, and it was only found while flushing the clutch fluid. I didn’t even know it was bad. The bike routinely gets over 50 mpg US, and has plenty of power. I don’t ride it off-road, it’s too big and unwieldy at low speeds. I bought it as a street bike. I’ve owned over 65 bikes in my 40 years of riding, and 3 have been Vstroms. To the observer they may appear dull and uninspired, but to me, Suzuki should be proud of their machines. I might be tempted by the new 800, but they’ll need a pretty big rebate to make me turn loose of my 1000.

    Incredibally Nathan, this video is incredibly incredible and alluring, with oodles of entry-price characteristics.🤗
    I had to settle for the tubed wheels of my T7 and rely on the FACT that, after 100s of 1000s of miles riding, (edit: over the years), I can count the number of punctures on one hand. I'd rather have tubeless, like yourself, but I'd rather have the T7 than not. Safe riding fella; will bump into you in the Valley of Rocks, Sept!😉

    Big screen for touring is available direct from your Suzuki dealer...I bought one new with my bike and I think it was only about 70 quid and makes it absolutely fine for 80mph cruising.
    My average fuel consumption has been 55mpg over just under 2k miles to date, and also has a massive range. I don't hang about either.
    Anyone that owns an 800 simply knew you'd like it 😉. They are for me what bikes are all about. Pure enjoyment.😊

    before I bought the 800de I tested: T7, adventure 890S, AfricaT., DesertX and... really vstrom offroad capabilities convinced me to buy the Suzuki. When I wrote about it on various forums, people answered me directly that it is impossible for the Vstrom to ride better than the KTM, that it is heavy, etc. Well, that's how I felt, and I also have a WR450 and really, if there is no big mud, what the 800de can do can make it hard enduro will be ashamed. Unfortunately, few people believed me. I'm glad your opinion confirms this.
    (the biggest loser for me is the 890S, whose suspension works much worse than the 800de and has 2cm less travel)

    • @MotorDanko
      @MotorDanko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i have the same opinion as you, i had the 790S with modified suspension and the 800DE is just better... and the 790S was better than the T7 and the Transalp at least on feeling... so we can say that the 800DE is just better than those...

    • @marceliszp4803
      @marceliszp4803 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MotorDanko but I must admit that the 890S drove very well on the road, above 160 km/h it accelerates better than the Suzuki. The 800de is agile and easy to turn, but up to 80 km/h. above 100 it starts to go straight very stably and you need more force to turn it. Even at 160km/h, the 890s turned like crazy (shorter wheel base), so the 890S is ok if you want to ride on the road(and you like a pinch of madness)

    • @MotorDanko

      @@marceliszp4803 i can agree with that, my 790S was like a naked bike on the road, and i loved that, if my 790S was reliable, i'd still have it... right now i own a F800GS, but i have one day with it... i will mod it searching for the suspension feeling of the 800DE... right now, the 800DE and almost every other mid-size adv bike are out of my reach.

  • @BikingChap
    @BikingChap 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Really interested to watch this, thanks! I think the problem Suzuki has got is that people often buy bikes with their heart and not their head. The reality is that the Transalp, especially in white, just looks so much better. Sure, it doesn't look anything like KTM good, but it does look smart. The Suzuki styling is, frankly, a mess. As you say this is a great shame because by walking away from the V twin Suzuki have lost the Vstrom's USP and previously loyal buyers are no doubt looking around at other options but they need to get people on it, as you say. I've spent some time test riding a Transalp and while I liked the looks, the suspension, particularly the rear, was woefully soft. Not a major issue alone I guess but the Hornet motor remains in the same state of tune as the donor bike and while gutsy enough you always feel that the power is tucked away at the top end, fun on the Hornet but bordering on the frustrating in the Transalp. Sadly i think folk will go for the Transalp based mainly on looks and miss out on what i hear is the better real world motor in the Suzuki but that's the trouble when the heart overrides the head. Oh and i agree with your comments on the wheels too, I think in this segment spoked wheels look more 'authentic' but tubeless spoked rims are more expensive so this is what we get...

    Excellent review - glad that Suzuki loaned it out to you. I had a 1st gen SV650 as my second bike and really enjoyed that engine. Wasn't quite sure how to feel when Suzuki started to pivot away from the V-twin but it sounds like this is a pretty decent engine. I definitely don't see the new one as a dirt bike but moreso just a general travel bike for country roads, paved or unpaved. Thanks.

  • @PetersJourney
    @PetersJourney 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    i have a quiet heavily modified v Strom 650 as a travel machine. It took me more then 40 000 Kilometers through Europe and Africa (paved and unpaved roads) . I tested the 800 last summer and was thinking of purchasing the 800. But one reason why I have chosen the 650 were the tubeless tires and I totally agree in that point with you. It is also slightly heaver as the 650 which is very difficult to pick by it is own. Maybe the weight of the 800 is better distributed. I don't know. I liked the power of the 800, but you can ride the 650 with less rpm and you don't get that amount of heat like from the 800.
    Maybe the first Revision of the 800 with tubeless tires, cruise control and better weather protection will be mine ;)
    thank you very much fort that little review!

  • @MotorDanko
    @MotorDanko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    i'm the perfect audience for the 800DE... the T7 is far too unconfortable for 2 up riding or long distance, even after replacing the very narrow seat... i had a 790 and i sold it because of issues, not big, but enough to make you feel not in trust with the motorcycle... i tested the F850 i hated it... then the tuareg 660 i loved it, but the forums are flooded with stupid issues from using the bike normally... the Transalp i really liked it, a little bit tall geared but confortable and powerful....
    But the Vstrom has EVERYTHING, confort, great suspension, great engine, great electronics, sensible price for the category... i would buy one eyes closed.

    • @MotorDanko
      @MotorDanko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Staafe100 the f850 is horrible if you ask me, terrible suspension, cheap plastics, the engine is good... and I think they updated it on the latest versions but be prepared to spend on suspensions right away... also... very very heavy feeling

      Transalp & DE are very very close to each other.
      Ones heavy & great suspension the other is light & compact.

    • @MotorDanko
      @MotorDanko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ChrisSauer-oe5ve I didn't feel them close at all, the 800DE is grunty and the weight is much lower in the centre of gravity, also the seat in the knee area is much more like an enduro, the Transalp in other hand has a slight wider tank, and it felt less nimble to move side to side... also is geared very tall, 1st gear is all about dragging the clutch

    Super underrated platform. I like mine. Sure, shes a big girl, but honestly theres not much difference in a 450pound bike and a 500pound bike, especially while riding. Personally my DE is easier to pick up than the T7 was or my buddy's AT is.

    I absolutely love mine. The headlight stinks but that can be fixed. It's a much better bike off-road than my '13 Triumph Tiger 800XC, it feels 200lbs lighter than my '22 KLR 650 and is much more fun to ride than my '16 Versys 1000LT. Yes, it is more fun that a Kawi liter bike. It has tremendous character. Plus it will go wherever I point it. I wish a few more people would contact Alpina wheels so they could get started making tubeless wheels for these bikes.

    Really good initial thoughts on the 800 DE.
    Picking up the VStrom 800 DE would be very similar to my 890 Adventure S, difficult for one person, especially in the mud. I’ve been there, it’s a struggle. I watch Tenere 700 riders struggle as well. The only answer to that is in the smaller bikes or stick to a single cylinder bikes, like a 690/701. I have a Husky 501, it’s brilliant in the off-road whether mud tracks like you showed of baby head boulders. Light, it feels like a mountain bike compared to an Adventure bike I’ve ridden or owned. But isn’t a joy to ride on a freeway for any length of time.
    I think this new 800 DE is a winner (minus the tube type wheels and any corrosion issues with those wheels) in the “mid weight” ADV segment for its capabilities and reliability, the windshield is always an easy fix in the aftermarket.

    I wonder if one of reasons for low sales is lack of bikes for test ride bikes ? , I know here in Nottingham Vertu Honda & CMC Yamaha In Clay cross both have a range of bikes for Test rides but The Two wheel Centre in Mansfield (a great shop I'm sure you know) often only have a couple of bikes, Powerslide Suzuki in derby only have a couple & the now Closed HBC Suzuki in Notts Didn't have any test bikes .
    When I was interested In the Katana a few years ago test rides just weren't available & when I bought my Vstrom 1050 from HBC I had to get a test ride at the two wheel centre.
    I don't know how it is around the rest of the country?

    Just on the wind protection - when I rode one of these I found the wind noise situation much more tolerable than past V-Stroms - you get less protection but as such there's less buffeting! It feels like there's a really good bike if you combine the best bits of both this and the 800RE - give me the good suspension and small windscreen but also the cast, tubeless wheels.

      @nathanthepostman  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right thinking about it. I did quite a few miles on the 2014 duck billed bike with what was a decent sized screen and I remember that being pretty poor for turbulence. The brief stints up to higher speed on the 800 didn't show any buffeting, just air flow. Which is definitely the better of the two!

    Tubes are better off-road. If you had tubeless and slightly dented the rim, you'd be fuct, start walking. That is why off-road bikes have tubed tyres.
    They are also safer as they don't deflate as quickly as tubeless. Give me tubed all day long. I have had 2 punctures in 53 years riding 365 to work.
    Good review and stonking bike. I found it wanted to go faster and instilled confidence even on narrow country roads. Engine, Gears, Quickshifter, Dash 10/10.
    To me the yellow with blue plastic looks awful, grey is best. In some other countries they have a white version which, for me is better looking and suits the lines of the bike.
    Unfortunately Suzuki have no intention of introducing the White to the UK at present.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks blackskunk. I get the argument for tubes but I think from a commercial point of view a great deal more people would prefer tubeless. Even ktm put them on 890 adventure r now. Couldn't a tube tyre fan just stick a tube in if they did get a dented rim? Or preempt it by sticking in a tube to begin with? Shame about that white tho. Does sound a better colour than what we've got at the minute. The visuals definitely let the bike down

    It sounds to me as though Suzuki have produced a really good real World bike that does so many of the things that motorcyclists actually do. You’ve moved down to smaller motorcycles and so have I. I now realise that I don’t need a heavy 1300cc motorcycle to enjoy touring and now have a 500 that does everything I need. Despite my dreams and ambitions 95% of my mileage is on road, mainly B roads and smaller, I use A roads when there is no choice and motorways never. My 500 can and does go off road within reason but it is always going to be compromised as, especially in touring mode it’s relatively heavy and the ground clearance could be better but it’s great for long stretches on gravel roads and slightly more challenging terrain. I’ve always thought of it as a real World bike because it does what I want to do really well. For the more challenging off road riding I do I have had a DR125 and it’s great. I’ve recently added a Voge 300 Rally to my collection and it is a great addition, it’s really at home on tracks, trails and loose surfaces but is comfortable enough to take further to perhaps do the ACT in the Pyrenees or even sections of the TET that is accessible close to my home. If I needed to do more A road riding I might look at the 750-800 class bikes, a lot of them look pretty useful but for me and my needs I simply don’t need that extra power, that extra weight and the associated extra costs, in my World smaller is good enough. I don’t care how great the new GS1300 is I have no need for most of what it offers so it would simply be a waste of money, that Suzuki although a nice sounding bike is still a step that I don’t need to take.

    Excellent review, especially for a first impressions point of view!
    I haven’t ridden a vstrom, but know the street versions were very well thought of.
    Good to hear the suspension is very good on this!
    How adjustable is it?
    The heavy lift is good to acknowledge..
    Probably higher on reliability than a ktm?
    But getting mentioned in the same breath is quite something.
    Appreciate your fun factor rating and ability to carry speed.
    And after mentioning the spoke tubed rim niggle, you put the value of the bike back in the spotlight!

    2010 wee owner here. If it had tubeless and cruise I’d buy 1, same goes for the transalp. Honda or Suzuki missed a trick cos if they had included either, it would’ve outsold the rival by miles! Guess they wanna save the handiest features for the bigger bikes, pff. I’m a road rider who likes ADV ergos so I’d probs choose the Honda, and eventually upgrade the suspension for my weight. Great time to be a biker, so much choice!

    Great review, not what I was expecting you to say about it. I wish it had better looking plastics and colour schemes though. Seems like a well engineered machine, but doesn't look as pretty as most of its direct competitors sadly. Even the latest Chinese trail bikes are starting to look pretty cool.

    Funny you should say that about the rims being tubed. The new 1050 VStrom - DE version has a tubed front and tubeless rear . Another manufacturer does the same thing- cannot remember who ? , but in saying that KTM 790,790, 1190,s Yamaha T7 DO have the issue with bending FRONT rims ( I have seen this myself in Australia we’re I live and quite a lot of BIG ADV riders are going to tubed fronts only . Also easier to change than a rear . BUT I get what you say MOST riders ( even in Australia will not take their 800 DE on HARD off road riding . It should be an optional.

    I saw one in a shop the other day and thought it looked alot better in the flesh than in photos. Cool even. Put an old school dakar/dr sticker kit on it and I think it would look awesome.
    Shame about the mpg unless it was because you were hammering it.
    Would love to hear your thoughts on the Kove 450 if you can ever get your hands on one. There aren't that many reviews in Europe or the UK yet .

    I think the Suzuki V Strom 800 RE is the road version that most previous owners will feel at home on, so this new DE version is trying to grab the people who want a bit more grunt and off road ability i.e. someone who wanted an Africa Twin but perhaps felt it was just too big?

    Do any other bikes on the fleet do better than 44mg when being wrung out? Agree with the tubed spoke wheel issue, makes no sense to 95% of riders, and i dont see why a tubeless rim would be anymore difficult to produce or even more expensive. Is it a 270crank job?

      For what it's worth just spent a few days on a Transalp in northern Thailand. Fun bike when above 5000rpm but very little performance below that. Much preferred the engine characteristics of the 800DE motor. Better low and midrange torque more suited to off-road riding and touring but still a LOT of fun in the twisties!

      Drop a tooth on front sprocket and you might find it has plenty of low end 🤔

      But weight is much greater on Suzuki 😢

      I tested the 890S and in my opinion it drives worse off-road than the 800de. it also has less travel. and the 790 doesn't even have full regulation (which the 890S 2023 has), so it will be even worse. Additionally, I was discouraged by the worse opinion about the failure-free performance of KTMs, especially the lack of information about the one made in China.

      I don't mind cast rims. I've got them on a few bikes and never cracked on. They just don't seem to do them as a 21 inch. And spokes do look cooler. I get the aspect of cost, but my £7k Moro Morini has tubeless spoked rims with stainless rims. It's not completely impossible at a good price point then. Personally I'd pay a bit more for the bike and not have the hassle. But I know the bean counters have their reasoning!

My opinion is also based on reviews of Adventure motorcycles, who have riden them both. No doubt Honda will sell 5 times as many because most ADV buyers are gullible. If you want an ADV bike the 800DE IS better. If you want a street bike that looks like an ADV bike ,well the TAlp is your ticket. But you enjoy that non adjustable budget suspension.
