Great vid. Very interested to see what you can turn the DE in to. It's nothing special on the spec sheet as you say but it has bags of potential if you can shed maybe 10+kg. The motor's great, fit some decent knobbly tyres & get the fully adjustable suspension set up properly with some stiffer springs & it could be brilliant .The big 20 litre tank also gives it a nice enduro friendly edge too.
A great review...and properly done! I've been very hopeful for this little bike since it dropped as I look for a future replacement for my KTM 990. You put her through the extract kinds of terrain I was hoping to see (maybe less the icy lake :) and your take on pros & cons were great. Looks like.... out of the box with some appropriate rubber, quite capable. A bit on suspension and cockpit work, even better. Thanks a ton, from the Rocky Mountains of the US.
I recently purchased the 800de and this really sets my mind at ease know what is actually capable of... i just found your channel and am now a subscriber..thank you for the video
@@BikeWorldTVshow well I don't plan on riding it on anything like that. I have the black one.. I'm in the USA and so far I love it.. can't ride at the moment due to snow
Any limitations of power are already solved in the aftermarket. It's a solid 8-10 more horsepower and 9-10 more ft-lb torque at the wheel, and the corresponding 7-8 pounds dropped off the exhaust (8S/8R). If you can full system the V-Strom that weight would drop more. Toss in a lithium battery. Suspension will be forthcoming, but the models are a tad new. Probably K-tech, Andreani, Hyperpro, Ohlins, or Nitron.
It really did lose the chain - I haven't seen that before. I really appreciate your taking the bike into the nether reaches of its capabilities. I think many (most?) of us like watching the reviews of very expensive bikes (like you mention), but when it comes time to pull out the wallet, affordable bikes are very much at play. Cheers!
Been very interested in this bike, I know it’s going to be good on the road, what I’ve been waiting for is someone to test it off road, especially in the part of the world I live and on the trails I’d tend to use it on. I’d love to see a little more of a review on the Welsh green lanes before you modify it, then see how it compares to the rest of the middle weight category 👍
Good test of a great looking bike ive been tempted to swop my tuareg for one of these but the tuareg has been so capable of goin places i think the vstrom would struggle up to now anyway 👌👍
I'm new to this channel and boy can Chris ride a bike but for all his amazing ability he comes across as humble and super cool not just some Billy big b#ll#cks 😎
A lot of it was down to the tires, whack some knobblies on it and it would surprise you again. Chucking the chain was a surprise it should have adjusted correctly before you were loaned it.
Great review I have the v strom & hate getting it dirty 😂😂 so far I’ve done 400 miles on it since December love it can’t see me going off road to scared off dropping it don’t think I could pick it up
It is a great bike and sits squarely atop for value per $$s spent. A couple tuners are getting some sizable torque/power gains throughout the rev range already on the 800/8S engine platform.. Waiting to see which exhaust will be best suited to my Yellow DE along w that future ECU flash...
Great vid. I really enjoy your adv/off road stuff. Any chance you could ride the Aprilia tuareg? It rarely gets a mention but I'd love to see what you think of it, especially compared to the vstrom.
I chose the 800DE Adventure over the TAlp, T7, and 890R. The Talp is a street bike, the T7 is nice but not as refined as the 800DE, the 890R is awesome but pricey.
Please get on with the build.. im curious as to possible suspension options.. springs valving or full replacement things like that.. ive been patiently looking forward to the build on this bike
Chris is obviously an incredible rider, so the things he was doing with that bike are really impressive. I'd really like to hear a bit more about fatigue of trying to wrestle that 500+ pound bike through technical terrain. I know how tiring it can be on a real enduro bike, I can only imagine the energy expanded trying to get it unstuck from that puddle for example. Well done overall, Suzuki is on to something with this platform.
General riding can be easier on a heavier bike, it’s when you get the big bikes stuck that energy is consumed rapidly, getting stuck once or twice can be enough if you’re not fit whereas you could get stuck 10-15+ times on an enduro
The bike is so stable you're not "wrestling" anything as long as you're moving. Point it in the direction you want to go and it goes. Most stable and forgiving bike I've been on.
@@cranedaddy678what kind of terrain are you riding on? Smooth dirt roads are a bit more technical like in this video? In several clips you can see Chris using a lot of body English to keep it upright and moving forward, very normal dirt riding techniques, but I assume they require a lot more effort on something this substantial.
i think zooks would have to be the best buy for your money, i think you get the most for the cash. Ive bought three, they never failed and were just brilliant. I had a K9 thou for nearly ten years before i changed brands, a 600 and a 750 before that. If i had the money, i'd have one as a second bike in a heartbeat.
Good video. Did you do much suspension set up in advance? Since it is fully adjustable it would be good to know what it is capable of 'out of the box' - I didn't expect to hear of it bottoming out so much.
Middleweight segment is super competitive and this is a big step up on what the VStrom was offering before...I think the buying split now is more down to which one "speaks" to you more, whether it be brand/image/sound
only issue which I have with this motorcycle is that there is real heat coming from engine, above 25 C is very annoying, unfortunately is not only in traffic stop and go but heats up in highway as well, but beside this very good bike, maybe could be 20kg lighter ;)
Great fun & look forward to following this project. But after looking at a Tenere 700 & Adventure 390/790. I decided on a 2007 KLE500 with good tyres, uprated shock & forks. Then a centre stand, lighter (but not noisy) pipe & crash protection. I have a bike that is practical (does over 100mph; allegedly), Cheap (although to me £3K is still alot) & I won't cry if I drop it. I have offroaded it similar to what you did. It nearly killed me (but great fun). Anything bigger is for a Capt. America or Batman. Not Fifty-Fatman (me)
It's a shame the KLE never caught on. The later versions like yours were really crippled by all the restrictions though, it also has a fair bit of extra weight. Could be a fantastic project bike. I used to own a GPZ500 (same engine, slightly different tune) and it was great.
That seat would have to go if you’re intending to do proper off-road often…it’s too sports tourer, sitting in the bike not on the bike. It needs a proper flat enduro seat
Another off road capable Adv bike without a proper off road chain guard/guide. Can someone please explain to me why the manufactures leave this critical part off? Ask yourself what you would do in this rider's situation with a de railed chain in the middle of nowhere. This is a 10.00 part on the production line.
@@Xanta91 I don't remember the exact weights of each battery but the SHIDO LTZ14S / YTZ14S I got to replace the original YUASA (I think it was a YUASA) is 3 kilos lighter. Might be 2.9 or so if I remember correctly and if you want to calculate to the gram :)
Best channel for this content - put Chris on a moto and you'll know what IT can do. Project bike sounds awesome 👍

This would definitely be an excellent project to watch, I’d be interested in swapping out my 790r for something that’s a bit more reliable
Probably the best review of this bike I have seen and I have seen most of them before and after I bought one. 👍
Best Motorcycle review I have seen in a long time, this guy gets it ! and explains not just the motorcycle but riding in general.

There is a company in Germany that has already built a modified 800DE and offers the type of parts mentioned.

You can gain ground clearance by installing a 18" rear wheel.... nice video
Wonder what would happen if “adventurer bike” manufacturers could bundle off tarmac riding skills instruction upon point of purchase.
How much harder will it be for an intermediate road rider to handle the 800DE in light terrain compared to e.g. the Himalayan 450 or the CFMoto 450MT?

I think figurative mid weight is what's intended here (less than 1000cc, more than 250).
well, put a lithium on and a lighter can and you'll get rid of around 7 kilos I would say.
