- Quick tips for getting on your motorcycle for the first time.
I am 5'11" 180lbs for those that are interested.
Make/Model: Monster 1100 evo 2012.
somebody stole my bike. if you end up buying one of these used and see this video let me know, maybe we can put a crook behind bars if the vin matches.
UPDATE: The thieves were caught two years later and are in jail.
I've watched plenty of these tutorials and I would say this is one of the better ones seeing as it gets right to the point and informative other than being long and drawn out.
The 285 people who disliked this video must hate motorcyclist. Because your video is word for word what I learned during my MSF course.
Great vid bro thanks for the tutorial is awesome that people like you take the time to teach others how to do this or show them a way of doing it ,am new at this and every bit of information that I can collect is valuable thanks again and keep on posting cheers
Pretty funny I just ran a search on this and YOU came up! Getting my temps tomorrow and signed up for the class in a few weeks. Too funny!!
Hi Craig,
Thanks for much for doing this video. I have watched a few others and you did an awesome job of explaining everything. I get it now. I have been thinking about getting my licence for a while but have been a little intimidated. Thanks again!
I really learned a lot from your video...Initially when I learned how to ride a motor bike .. my bike left three times ...then I watched your video.. followed all steps that you done in the video...since then i riding bike very nicely but I am not getting perfection....perhaps that will take some time...but tank you Sir...Mr Craig McRae..God bless you...
This is a short lesson video, but you hit it spot on, good job man
Watched this video like 50 times in excitement for my black 1100 EVO coming this spring :)
This was by far the best tutorial I have come across...thanks mate! :)
This actually did help a lot. I had no idea about anything with motorcycles, now I know enough so I won't go into classes with nothing.
Great video thank you!
Really like the clutch exercise.
iv seen a couple vids for riding a bike... so far this is my fav. i actually learned smthing.
Man I LOVE the Ducati Monster! Its such a Gorgeous Bike, Really all Ducati just look drop dead gorgeous. Awsome Bike and Awsome video Broskii.
beautifully made, I am thankful you did not speed through or skip anything that could be considered redundant by more experienced riders!
Your clip was helpful. I'm a scooterist wanting to learn to ride a motorcycle and this clip helped. Thanks for posting.
Hey, what kind of scooter do you ride? Are scooters popular in your country?
Jamie Lee I live in the U.S. My bike is a Honda Sh150i. It's been reliable and is a fun ride, to be sure. In the future I'd like a bit more power, hence an interest in owning a motorcycle someday, since used scooters are comparatively rare where I live. Affordable, used motorcycles are common here , though.
LarryRickenbacker The lack of gears and throttle delay is the gayest part of scooters, let alone the power
This video can be very good guide for beginners like me. In the basic Rider courses, the instructors don't give such tips (like the ones provide in this video). Every bits and pieces are important. Highly appreciable !!
Very comprehensive tutorial, thank you!
Great, advise. I'm about to take my test to get my endorsement Sept 21-22 and then I want to get the 2018 Monster 821. So it was great to see a video from someone who had a monster as well for advise.
Howd it go?
Hei Man your video help me a lot, I want to start with a bike and right now I try to learn as much as possible. I dont know if you have more videos about this tematic but if not please keep doing it. Me and my girlfriend will apreciate it. I'm following you now so keep doing instruction classes it's a good thig and notmuch people have this on his channel so You'll grow your popularity fast enough to realice that's the tematic you were looking for.
Thank you very much.
Well that bike got stolen. I currently ride a Ural Gear-Up, so it's a bit different than what you would need to know for a standard motorcycle. Thanks for the appreciation though.

Man but what matters is not the bike you ride. Instead of that what is really valuable is share your experience about the learning process and the safety of ridding a bike to people getting into a moto world. It looks like you have that experience Share it with the people they will be grateful to you.
Dammm!!!!!What a beautiful motocycle!
thank you..this tutorial has helped me a lot in understanding bikes
Going for my cbt on Friday your video helped a lot. Ive wanted a bike for years. I'm only starting on a 125cc and build my self up. Thanks for the video.
+Kieran Sands Good thinking. Smaller bikes are a lot more forgiving of mistakes, and if you get into an accident, it's less likely to kill you. You will eventually have to bail, and when you do, it's better to do it on a smaller bike. Better to learn on a smaller bike so that you can make those mistakes with minimal injury. I started with a Rebel 250cc myself. It's the same bike used by the MSF Course for beginner's classes.
I eventually had to bail on it, trying to go around a hairpin turn I didn't know was a hairpin turn and ended up driving it into a ditch. If it hadn't been a small bike, I'd wouldn't have been able to just get back on and continue riding. Either the bike, I, or both would have been too broken to continue.
On that note, always make sure to wear heat resistant boots, preferably steel toe. If I hadn't been wearing such boots, the inside of my right ankle would have been severely burned by being pinned down by the oil case and exhaust. Ironically that's similar to how the scar on the outside of the same ankle happened when I was 4. I was on the back of my dad's harley and couldn't keep my feet on the passenger pegs because my legs weren't long or strong enough. He went around a turn and my ankle flew in between the rear shocks and the exhaust.
I started on a 750 nitehawk
+Jenny Tokumei That's a wrong way to think. That same myth, that all bikers will eventually get into an accident mentality. It's crap. 50% of all motorcycle accidents are alcohol related. And If a car hits you, whether heavy or light bike, it won't matter. And No, you won't eventually have to bail if you take a safety course and practice.
Jim Morrison Safety courses and practice do not protect you against the chaos of the road.
Will a safety course and practice protect you against a sudden burst of 45mph wind while crossing a bridge?
Will a safety course and practice protect you against a cager who actively tries to kill bikers that they think have done something wrong regardless of whether or not the biker actually has done something wrong? Yes, it happens.
Will a safety course and practiceprotect you against black ice that you had no idea you should even be wary of because it was during a road trip so you're unaware of previously existing road conditions?
Will a safety course and practice protect you against a drunk cager who wants to get home really quickly and thinks that tailgating you is the proper way to go about doing it?
Will a safety course and practice protect you against a cager who doesn't see you in the lane in front of a car they're trying to cut off during a lane change?
Will a safety courseand practice protect you against cagers talking on their celphones while making lane changes?
Will a safety course and practice protect you against A sudden wind or torrential downpour washes dirt onto the corner of a turn thus creating a traction hazard?
Will a safety course and practice protect you against aggressive drivers who inadvertantly force you to maneuver into a pothole?
No.
If you cannot conceive of scenarios in which you can take a unavoidable spill through no fault of your own, then you aren't as experienced as you think you are.
u go in a rebel ?. way to go dude that one is a hard to ride one(semi HD/sport).probably easier to go on a Cb125 wkwkwkw
I never would have though of that rolling hell to toe thing, damn that is a great point
Thanks - I’m taking my first time rider class later today
Happy to help! The hands on experience of the course is still invaluable. I'm just here to help you get started.
Most motorbike educational thing I've ever seen
Congratulations on a very fine video. It offers good instruction for those who are relatively unfamiliar with operating a motorcycle.
Sorry to hear your bike was stolen. I remember wathing this video a few months ago before I took my MSF course. Very helpful video and I do remember your initial description for the video eas that it was intended to help your Dad learn how to ride a motorcycle.
I'm learning how to ride in a Yamaha R6 that I just got yesterday. I will be taking the classes however and so looking forward to them.
Gorgeous bike... looking to finally purchasing a motorcycle and I really want a Ducati... this was a nice tutorial video! thanks for uploading :)
much appreciated, i did in fact learn from professionals. that's why I make the point of taking the lessons. they're highly valuable.
This is invaluable! Thanks so much for putting this together! Shopping for my 696!!!!
Great video! I learned a lot from it even though they are mostly basics. Still a lot of crucial stuff that I might miss out. My parents bought me a bike for a birthday present (even though they are fully aware that i don't know how to drive one.) and always encouraged me to practice with it.
Simple but Brilliant! Thanks
Glad to hear you're taking a course. Have fun, it's well worth it!
nice vid! very helpful for starters! thanks man!
Man i love this video it shows all i need to learn how to drive a motocycle. very helpful vid. thankx!!!
Thanks for sharing...this is a great learning experience.
This is the best "Motorcycle Riding" Tutorial on TH-cam... Helped me a lot. Thanks bro!! Make Some more videos if you can.
Yeah, you were indeed right about not braking too early; the engine's inertia and transmission's gearing will directly conflict with the brakes. That's why I tell people that your clutch is your control, therefore, any time you intend to slow up at all, the clutch should be the FIRST thing you reach for, to nix your engine's force onto the wheel.
it was a great video. especially for those who have never seen a bike before. however, when you were talking about braking, i think it would have been a good idea to say that your right hand controls the front brake and right foot controls the rear. not just say what percentage the stopping power it provides. again, a great video and a beautiful bike. gotta love Ducatis
i'm glad you focus on the important things. excellent use of your high school education.
It's really help refresh my memory
TY for these tips. very helpful
My choices were the monster 796, speed triple, ninja 650r but im in love with the monsters' single sided swing arm, it's so sexy! you're a lucky guy
but thanks for the feedback
& great video btw
Solid advice, and sweet bike.
Nice one. Thanks for putting this up.
I am having a harley davidson iron 883 , a ducati monster and a bmw 1000 rr.
This video really helped pal.
Thx for this video.
How do you manage it..?
AMRITH BERZERK I have all the three bikes.
But I have assistants to look after those bikes.
It's easy to manage because I use all the bikes
does it make you dizzy alternating between 3 types of bikes?
Great video I enjoyed it any advice on what bike to pick up for a new Rider I was thinking possibly a Shadow 750
Thank you for the video, this will help me next week when I take my course.
Thank you Dude, I wish I had found your channel before I made a fool of myself yesterday where I had to counseled myself out of a 10 hours course... i feel like i just learn more here in 8 mnts that i did in 10 hours.
Damn that's heinous dude, I'm really sorry to hear that your bike got stolen.. Great vid though. I'm planning on buying a cheap low powered bike to learn on soon (any suggestions??) and your video was very informative and helpful.
Hey what year is your ducati? Its the 695 I take? Its just I saw a 2012 with the exhaust near the seat.. is yours custom or something? Tx
I have a Yamaha v star 250 . when parked if you want to lock steering, you actually have to turn handle bars to the right. there is no way to lock it to if facing left.
which I do lock when I leave it in the parking lots at work.
Honda NightHawk is the one I learned on, and If you buy it used your resale value will be pretty similar to your purchase price since it's a good starter bike and lot's of people are starting up all the time.
very nice to see this. cant wait for my monster this season. first bike wish me luck.
The friction zone, do you hold the clutch all the way or just went it started to move a bit?
Thank you for the information provided.
BTW, Your bike looks sick!! :)
balance really comes from mind but really some techniques help. u showed some of them.
hi, it's a nice and useful video :-) iAm having my driving lessons now and i want to know, should i use the clutch before applying the breaks or before the motorcycle stops?
Great video and advice. Thanks!
Thanks a lot man best video i can find
Great to hear, good luck and stay safe!
This was very helpful thank you.
Yes, Like Craig said. Because else you over-stress your engine.. Once you're on the motorcycle, you'll figure that out pretty fast. * you can hear and feel it *
Goodluck when you have your bike;)
Great tips man! Ty for the help!
very happy to hear you went to take the course. any ideas what bike you might get?
I didn't know Monsters had that electronic display on them. Even the 696s. That puts them in the running for a possible bike.
thank you for your video. great job. very helpful for a newbie. :)
Awesome bike-- I've been looking at the same one for the last few months online, and want to go test ride it as soon as I get back from being deployed. Performance wise, I heard it lags a little when starting out, but picks up speed quickly, is this true? Every video I have seen on youtube seems like the 1100 is fast from the get go. Have you had to get it serviced yet?
thank god for this video the clutch part really really helped everyone else clutch videos shitty
thank you sir I learned a lot from this video
I think it was pretty informative, thanks for uploading.
may I ask the model of the motorcycle?
thanks , i' ve learn very cool tips
the key switch gives you power (lights, spark plug, display), the button on the handlebars gives your engine spark and starts the bike.
Gorgeous bike. My buddy has a Triumph Daytona 675.. I noticed the accessory/button locations are almost exactly the same. Are ducati & triumph together?
Great video, I love your bike!
i'm 6'3" do you think i'm too tall? and also, is it possible to raise the handlebars or buy different ones?
(a)You should always use the kill switch. Its not just for turning off the bike in Ideal scenarios. Its also meant in case of emergency. ie: the day you roll off the road, into a ditch.. the rear wheel is still spinning and chewing up your pant leg. If you always use the kill switch, muscle memory will immediately cause you to hit that kill switch, WHILE both hands are on the grips for control.
Thanks man very helpful 😊
hey dude. i just bought a 2002 monster 750! it looks great and i think its a great starter bike. its low revving, low hp, descent economy and girls love it. i find it hard to make that U turn you are showing us or any other slow moving maneuver. is there a trick to learn to control the bike at slow speed? i would also like an opinion on what to look for in a helmet
I just stared riding a few days ago, felt natural. One thing I bet a lot of people do is psyching theirselves out. Just get on it, do not over think it and just do it.. Down matter the size of the bike because they all function the same, just more power or less power.. Respect it, have patience, and use common sense.. Gsxr 750 but I also do not have the urge to speed so that a plus on my side :p ride safe everyone
i can confirm that going from 20-60mph is incredibly fast like from the on-ramp to the highway, i don't really do a lot of 0-60 riding on this, but i don't have a lot to compare it to either. i haven't been on too many other bikes and none this fast. i have had two services, one was the mandatory first service after it's broken in (~700mi) the other was the beginning of this season after pulling it from storage.
Great video, I've already passed my training courses and have ridden for some time but I checked out your vid for the bike =) Sorry to hear it got stolen, that must be rough although I have to ask, did you have any disc locks or any additional security and was it stolen from your home? More importantly, has your insurance covered the theft or are you still looking? Much appreciated and best of luck, ride safe.
May I ask what model your bike is? thank you, great video!
Beautiful bike and great tutorial!!
What are those 2 yellow things next to your handle bars?
I'm a beginner taking the safety course next month. Do you think the 696 is too much bike for a newbie?
Thank you, It was very informative.
Hey Man, nice video!!!, This video helped me a lot!, Im starting in the bikes waiting until my MSF starts next month. People are suggesting getting a Honda 250 or Ninja 250, I personally don't like them and I don't want later on move up, spending more money. I love Ducati, I see you have a nice one, which Ducati is good for start up? Monster 696, 700...
Thank you again, any feedback is appreciated!
Leo
practice! and always keep your eye on where you want to go. dont be afraid of the bike tipping over, it wont as long as you maintain even pressure on the throttle. it feels awkward, but looking exactly where you want to go is the only guaranteed way to get there, as soon as you look elsewhere you shift that direction.
don't skimp on a helmet. i have a shoei rf-1100, it's excellent. be sure to try on a helmet before you buy, don't just go online and pick one out without having tried it on first.
nice vid cery easy to understand, THANX!!! What kinde of bikemodel is taht?
Great video man, very helpful
Hi im just curious how much mileage do you get on you monster 1100 evo? im still debating the 696 or the 1100 evo.
thanks
Great video!
are you in nyc? brooklyn by any chance? it got stolen from that parking lot and it was covered? damn.
Cool bike dude! Wish i had one of those monsters. What bike did you first rode before getting this beast?
Thank you very much for the video, I have 17 and I'm learning
Good tips. Thanks.
Just wanted to say that not all bikes have the handle bar lock being in the ignition.
My 2001 Honda Rebel 250 has a separate lock on the actual frame, where the forks go down. So if the ignition or steering lock is ever changed on that bike, you need multiple keys. Sometimes these things happen, especially with antiques, like on my 1982 Kawasaki KZ750-H3 LTD which requires 4 keys to operate the ignition, gas cap, seat lock, and helmet lock. As for seat lock, the KZ750's seat doesn't bolt in, it's hinged to open up like a trunk from the side to reveal the battery and a convenient document compartment.
same here
who cares about your motorcycle
motovlog gazele This is a video for beginners, and I'm trying to help aleviate any potential confusion by giving newbies the benefit of another person's experience.
In short, don't be a dick.
Ok then I'm sorry
I really appreciated the heel-to-toe advice you gave. It's a great idea to build consistency. Also, some people called you out on the "steering wheel" scenario: it isn't easy to be on camera. To wit, words can slip. What those people don't realize is that they are affecting someone whose only trying to help out. I wanted to thank you for that.
great video
