    I'm 54 and have been riding for 25 years, my mom also rode when she was younger but was riding a trike when she passed away in 2014. In her memory I bought a Honda Rebel 250 strictly to teach women riders. She loved when a new gal learned. Its so fun to teach. A new rider starts her first lesson today!! Ride safe and ride often.

    I took a class last October. That was amazing!!! I've gotta find a job now to buy a motorcycle. I'm just gonna look for a 250cc cruiser like the Rebel that I rode. I'm excited about this!!!

    I took this course 25yrs ago to get my License. And I'm glad I did. I rode in the dirt forever, but street riding is unique, and a minefield to navigate.It was held on 2 consecutive Saturdays at a community college nearby. Half in the class, half in the parking lot. I learned strategies that I still use today. It's a great way for anyone to get started.

    I hadn't ridden for about 40 years, bought a sport touring Yamaha, took the course a year ago, and am on my way with Twist of the Wrist 2. The course I took which is shown above in the video brought back to mind many things I had forgotten, and best of all we rode small 500 Buells. With my certification in hand, I went to the DMV and they just signed it off and I was on my way.
    What was great was my refamiliarization with riding was done on a small bike. If I had tried to take the DMV riding test on my FJR 1300 Yamaha, I would have failed. Without lots of practice, slow riding on that large a bike is very difficult, such as having to do the figure eight in a tight rectangle. Small bikes are agile, but the larger ones, including many Harleys are what I call "Ponderous".

    hey, a few tips from a 10 year dirtbiker/quad rider- most bikes will allow you to adjust how heavy your hand lever pulls are for the clutch and brake, most riders find the best comfort and control in being able to pull the levers straight back with 2 the index and middle finger, also you can adjust the angle of your controls when you have a bike of your own, mostly its just remember that its a heavy maching and doesnt have good balance over bumps at low speeds, and watch out for deep ruts

    Perfect timing! I dunno how you guys keep doing this, but a few months back Motorcyclist came out with an issue on small bikes just as I got my friend interested in learning how to ride. She signed up for her BRC last night and she'll be taking it on the 18th of this month (assuming weather holds out). She was telling me today that she's a bit nervous, so I'm going to link this video to her Facebook now. Excellent work, and come on out to Colorado sometime!

    Absolutely. I rode trail for a decade before I got a cruiser and it gave me skills and instincts that some of my rice rocket friends have a hard time grasping.
    In my opinion the best learner bike is the xt 225 or 250. I went from a Honda 400 to the Yam 225 (because its street legal) and loved it.

    When I got my California M1 years ago through taking the MSF course, I crashed in the box during my exam. Case of "Where my eyes go, that's where the bike goes!" Fortunately, they let me take the 2 day riding course for free again a couple weeks later where I somehow got through the box. God, I hated doing that drill!!!
    I don't know anybody who has passed the motorcycle exam directly from the DMV but I always tell folks the MSF is absolutely worth it + you get your exam there!

    In the Philippines, getting a motorcycle license is like getting a driver's license. Go to the Department, fill up the forms, take the exam(does not matter if you pass or fail), pay up and your done. No wonder there is always traffic and accidents on the road. And in the provinces, someone wearing a helmet is very rare.

  • @threepac
    @threepac 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the USA its note required to wear every piece of protective gear. In some states you don't even need a helmet. To take the course. All you need are boots, gloves, helmet, and a long sleeve shirt.

  • @norway2602
    @norway2602 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In norway you need 20hours of driving a bike with a profecional trainer and you then have to take a theory test and then you have to take 3 more test on the bike itself.
    1 For driving on the road,one for driving on a parkinglot with cones and one for explaining how to do maintinance on your motorcycle. The motorcycle lisence will set you back 3500 USD

For the final test most will be done with the examinator on a separate bike. A small percentage is done with examinator on the back. It's a computer-chosen random selection.

    She is such a nerd, but in a super cute way! I'm glad she did well. I do think that manual driving and manual riding are very similar. I believe that if she was not a manual driver as she said she was, she would have had a harder time learning. She already had the mechanics down, so it was just a matter of adjusting the mechanics from foot clutch to hand clutch.

    All that is required by the MSF, both courses i've taken, has been long sleeves, over-the-ankle shoes, full-fingered gloves, pants and a DOT approved helmet. During the MSF Basic course, I think I got to a max of 15MPH. However the second course I took, the Advances Riders Course (Also known as a Military Sporbike Riders Course for military personnel) I got upwards of 30-40 through figure 8s and so-forth. Can injury happen? Yes. However, these courses are extremely safe if you listen to them.

  • @Mu4dD1b15
    @Mu4dD1b15 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    here's the thing, when I took my class they wouldn't let us go more than... maybe 20 mph. Long sleeves, jeans, and boots are pretty much all you need if you are learning in a small area and not actually going anywhere quickly. Jackets would have caused overheating, even in September remember you're on a black top the whole time and it got kinda hot.

    Last I checked here in New York this course cost about $300, and requires three days of class. That is after a $50-150 motorcycle learners permit from the state. But if you pass you get a waver saying you don't need to take a state road test. Wow 2000 euros!! Unless you get a free bike at the end that's a rip off.

    Good for you! Sadly, I failed mine in 1 1/2 hours because i struggled with finding neutral, coordinating the clutch, stalling the engine and nearly dumping the bike on the ground a couple of times...was so frazzled my hands were shaking. Didn't help that my goggles kept fogging, too.

    • @oHeihei
      @oHeihei 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alonzo Branson There were a few people in my class that did that. I was pretty nervous and excited and because of that was pretty shaky and wasn't super accurate with the clutch until I got use to everything and calmed down a bit. Everyone learns at a different pace, so keep practicing! Try again and again and again! You'll get there :)

    • @gracebednarczyk649
      @gracebednarczyk649 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      same here!!!... I did dump it, by then frazzled is an understatement... so not sure, I can retry...but, still scared... good luck

    • @mannydcbianco
      @mannydcbianco 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alonzo Branson Getting nervous and then frazzled is probably why most of the people who fail fail. I think most people have the skills to pass after a full 2 or 3 day course, it's just about keeping your nerves in check, putting too much pressure on yourself, getting tense and then getting exhausted. Just keep at it, you'll get there.

      Yep, my next opportunity comes at the end of July when my course comes up again. Cousin gave me a couple of lessons in a parking lot near his house, so I think I'll do a lot better.

      Alonzo Branson A friend of mine failed three times, he did not pass until his fourth try. This was in Europe though, where the test is usually more difficult than here in the US. He was actually a really good rider, he just could not keep his nerves in check during the exams.
      Best of luck to you in July!

    I took the course last year. It's definately the right way to learn . You need to practice a lot before going in heavy traffic. It's very dangerous and can't be taken lightly.

    Oh man, i was really hoping they would get married at the end :)
    Joking aside this totally reminded me of my MSF course and all the fun and excitement. Got my endorsement at age 33 (first time i sat on a bike)
    The only guy in class that failed was the 60 year old helicopter pilot. Go figure!
    You have to invest in this if you're thinking of ever riding a motorcycle. It's worth every penny!!! Completed my MSF course at a local college.

    I've always wanted to learn to ride a motorbike. Did ride a little Honda 50 when I was a kid, but that was like 20+ years ago. One of these days...

    Riding is addictive.
    I took home the book from our local D.O.L. and passed my first time without a class in a heavy rain storm.
    WA does not require insurance for bikers. Have insurance,

    I took my MSF course little over a year ago, best idea ever. I neved could afford a bike, though, so I feel like it was wasted. It's strange seeing the MSF let people ride without jackets, that was mandatory for my course. Ride on!

    Got my first "bike" (motorcycle) at 13 years of age; having never sat at the controls of one prior to that. I had absolutely no instruction in riding or operating such a machine before. Just looked the thing over . Figured it out, logically Put the key in the ignition , kick started the thing , pressed down the gear lever and carefully let out the clutch while twisting or turning the handle for acceleration. The rest came naturally. People are inclined to complicate relatively simple processes for the sake of the dummies populating the gallery

You know what, I think this is an excellent idea and I've always wanted to do something with a little excitement and don't have to spend a fortune and buy the best bike. Hmmmm

    I took this course to get my license in RI but if you have previous experience with dirtbikes or riding on the road it is a bit tedious. Also riding a 250 in a controlled environment may be good familiarization for a noob but it doesn't really prep for actual road riding.
