Mrs. Gandhi's speech was impeccable and shows how Indian leaders were clear about National interest first and care for others. Her speech is relevant today and tomorrow. She was class apart. Salute to her for keeping Indians head high in difficult times.

Indira Ghandi committed Genocide of Sikhs which were a tiny minority. The Sikh Genocide of 1984 has been recognized by States of California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ontario to name a few and many local assemblies in the United States. It may soon be recognized at the federal level like the Armenian Genocide. She was also responsible for mass murder through forced sterilizations of mostly hindu women in 1974-1975.

China also had just 14% poverty rate compared to India's 48% poverty rate which reduced from 70% poverty rate since independence in 1947. Also China didn't have many religions and languages dividing them. Don't compare India to any other country. India is like no other. It's way harder to lead India than small countries like Philippines, Singapore, hongkong. It's easier to lead USA, China than India. You've to balance everything. She wasn't perfect and matter of fact no PM in history of India has been perfect everyone had their positives and negatives. She was fierce and feared nobody that's both her positive and negative side. It was during her reign India became a defence power house she layed the foundation of nuclear power as India tested it's first nuclear bomb under her. Made alliance with Soviet Union which helped strengthen India on all fronts it even resulted in the first Indian to reach Space (Rakesh Sharma and Indian Air force pilot). The people of Bangladesh will never forget this great Prime Minister of India. A token of love and affection to Mrs Gandhi was shown at the Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Uddayan) in Dhaka on 18 March 1972 by over a million people. They welcomed her as a great friend of Bengal and Bengali. It was the largest public meeting she ever attended in her life. She had re-established the inseparable bond of brotherhood between India and Bangladesh in 1971.

Say what you want but Indira Gandhi was a patriot of first order. 3 of the most courageous and bravest leader of India have been Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, Indira Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. During Bangladesh creation Nixon could not move a finger to help Pakistan because whole of USA was with Indira Gandhi such was her world leadership skill.
Listen to her speech in those few sentences she creates, clearly communicates and controls the framework of discussion that she will have with Reagan.

Such a lovely straightforward, sincere and concise comments. No chest beating or pompousness. It is inappropriate for today's leaders to demean the leaders of the past. After all, they too have toiled hard to advance India at that time. Their ideology at that time may have been but they too had national interest and development as a high priority

@Harpreet Dhillon She was PM for 193 months but the emergency lasted only 19. She held elections in 1977 and 1980. If she was a dictator, why would she not reimpose the emergency when she was reelected? Even Atal Bihari Vajpayee described her as Durga. I agree that later leaders except for Rajiv Gandhi were not as capable and the Emergency was the darkest period of Indian democracy but don't deny respect where it's due as the real king of the emergency was Sanjiv Gandhi not Indra
