This is my favourite song of all time and it's almost purely on the basis of its lyrical content and delivery, so I very much appreciate this reflection of yours. :)
Interestingly, I had always interpreted 'Give me one more medicated peaceful moment' as a moment spent with his mother in palliative care, whilst she was still alive but on life-support. I have this rather augural image in my head of him sitting by her hospital bed alone with her. They are in silence save for the repetitive beep of the hospital equipment. It is a moment of legitimate 'peace' between them, even if she is unconscious. Seemingly tranquil, and yet it is underpinned by the intensity of the imminent decision he is forced to make. The fact that he yearns for her to remain with him is impossible to deny even as he otherwise attempts to take a clinical approach to the situation. 'Give me one more' indicates his desperation, for he knows that once the doctors and death come for her, these 'medicated peaceful moments' between the two of them will inevitably end and whatever traces of comfort he sources from her lingering presence will be robbed of him. The weight of the line is such that I do think its meant to describe a desperate final moment shared between the two, an admission to his emotional weakness and his inherently human desperation to cling on to what is left of her, with the word 'medicated' entering as a harsh reminder of reality. His reluctance to 'kill her' is painted brilliantly in the repetition and powerful delivery of such a plain yet heartful lyric. This rather pure and ingenuous feeling is then perfectly complemented by the following lyric ('And I don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility'), sung not with anger but with anguish. He expresses his overwhelming frustration towards their circumstance, that he might even blame and thus feel hostile towards his mother for placing him in this troubling situation. This is perhaps compounded with any lingering resentment towards her sourced from unresolved disputes taking place prior to her coma and related regrets that she has left him to dwell on alone, with no chance of seeking her forgiveness. And yet this inner conflict carries an air of guilt- ultimately, she is his mother and he loves her, and that is the reason why this decision is so difficult to make for him.
I think that makes better sense than for the 'medicated peaceful moment' to be drug-induced and on his part, because his ability to turn to drugs for comfort is not contingent on her death and therefore doesn't justify his apparent desperation. I believe the song Autumn by MJK's side-project Puscifer also carries a very similar air of desperation. He's shown himself to be very wistful in much of his song-writing and Orestes is one of those songs that conveys that most strongly.

Thank you. This helped me more than the video to understand what this song was about.

Also, several things. Medicated could mean fabricated. Just a play on words. So, "give me one more fabricated peaceful moment" maybe he wants to be released from this responsibility, just wants to almost forget about it, because it's a source of a huge amount of emotional turmoil?
Maynard has never revealed that he was abused by anyone in particular, he's very private about his actual life.
Maynard also isn't really a drug addict. I think he said he experimented with mushrooms when he was younger, but other than that he's not really into drugs. Except alcohol (wine).

read more on Maynard, not a drug addict, Mom confined to a wheelchair for 20 plus years..yes Orestes is a reference, yet I have never heard of having to make the choice of ending her life?? He contemplated it, and on this album eludes to it often. Judith for sure.. yet his mom always kept faith as key component of her life, that of what she had, perplexed Maynard to say the least. Orestes reference is a wonderful literary tale to throw some ambiguity into the title and lyrics. But, after all is revealed, its him battling a tough existence with a once vibrant Mom now confined to a stale state. And his dark or natural instincts to remedy this tragedy is more than heart wrenching! Great song! Great, love the channel. Most fans, have read up pretty well on these so called strange titles to the average listener, and know the metaphores and depth. Awesome, moreover, I have never read or heard of Maynard suffering abuse, parental, or otherwise. I have read most all on him seen interviews, and read the most recent book, his Dad a wrestling coach, was a hard authoritarian, yet not abusive to my research.. he ran cross country ect.. nothing to out of the ordinary for a Michigan teen, who obviously wanted more, artistically, a service vet, was recruited to west point, , anyway , extraordinary guy!!

Kind of like the Lizzy Borden story regarding possible child abuse that Lizzy may have suffered at the hands of her parents.

He wrote the lyrics. Billy (the guitarist) wrote the rest. Well, maybe not the drums, they had a drummer come in and stuff. But yeah, Maynard writes the lyrics in all the bands he's in. He's a one trick pony I guess, but what a trick it is.
Also, some mistakes on the lyrics. The correct lyrics can be found on Genius: genius.com/A-perfect-circle-orestes-lyrics
Also also, this song is probably my top 5 favorites, listened to it an ungodly amount of times. So I know exactly what you mean. Chills, everytime.
