MG4 XPOWER - EV - ITS THAT GOOD! REVIEW AND DRIVE BY CLASSIC CAR ENTHUSIAST

  • Today I had the opportunity to test drive and review the new MG4 XPOWER, EV. Having previously owned a couple of Electric Vehicles, I jumped at the chance to drive the high power version of the MG4.
Incredible performance with over 400bhp, AWD and a price tag under £40k!
Stay tuned to find out what a classic car enthusiast made of it and how FAST it actually is in real life.
Visit Peter Vardy MG, the new name for MG in Scotland. Book a test drive for the MG4 X Power at one of their dealerships in either Aberdeen, Kirkcaldy, or Edinburgh East.

Completely understand some of the comments on here that it is really an MG in name only versus a few years ago. And yes, the quality of the interior and exterior features are not BMW or Lexusesque. But then neither is the price. The Xpower will easily beat most top marque brands on performance that cost two, three and even four times the price. The anti Chinese argument would perhaps be a fairer one if our houses (and cars) weren’t stuffed with items that were originally manufactured there. Not a huge fan of many regimes throughout the world but we have to accept that the pricing makes ev’s affordable (not that £26k for the se version is exactly cheap) to many people who would be excluded based on the price of European models. The market will soon be swamped with some standard and excellent ev’s from China and it is up to the rest of the worlds manufacturers to respond.

Great review first and foremost. I've had mine 1 week now, never owned an EV before and i'm a certified petrol head. Company policy to change from my modified Juke Nismo. Love the Xpower in every way, it's not the most luxurious but for price very acceptable. Insanely fast but feels safe. Styling is good but that's an individual thing. Got mine in Dynamic red which I like. Range is good for my needs. Can't wait to find the ST and VXR boys on the roads 😅

@@RetroRatchet I'm getting around 3.8m/kWh and my daily commute is around 75 miles of motorway & A roads. 80% shows 200 miles range. Usually drive it quite moderate with the occasional fun moment. The Juke Nismo is good fun, mines at 250bhp and goes really well, although nothing like the X Power. Shame I've got to sell it next week after the MOT & service.

@@davidstuart4915 no in mine I'm getting about 170 with 20% on dash which shows about 40 miles left, had mine about 4 weeks now and put 2000 miles on it. I drove from Manchester to London last week and charged up twice each way, went as low as 20% and charged to just over 80%. Probably didn't need to charge twice but didn't want to be caught short so to speak. I drove down at night so lights on and heater and averaged 3.5 miles /KW, came home in the day and got about 4.5 so using features etc does make a small difference. One pedal mode seems better than traditional auto.

I'm trying to convince my wife that we really need a four wheel drive car because our house is at the top of a hill whichever way you approach it and we need it for winter. I won't mention the power and it's good that it looks identical to our MG4 SR. Ive checked the insurance for an 80 year old and it isn't too bad - about £750.

That was undoubtedly one of the very best car reviews ive ever seen. At times you looked likeca kid in a sweet shop lol. The way you compared with petrol cars economy when basically red lining it was excellent.
However from what i believe the cheap overnight rate is not actually all night but a measly 4 hours.
But back to the car. As ive made perfectly clear im anti EV but im a realist. EV's do have a place but not shoved down our throats.
That MG4 X-power. OMG I'd have one. Ever since the MG4 came out i was hooked by its looks. And when I heard that they were gonna do a 430bhp one I said YES. Now its here and boy what a looker.

You are correct tho, these kind of tariffs are usually limited to 4 ish hours.

@@OMP-yo2lo yes, my Eco-7 is 7 hours at 9p, so That's 40 kWh input or about 145 miles at 3.6 mpkWh, or £3.60 so about 2.5p per mile, I have an older ZSEV that has averaged 3.6 over the last 3 years, the MG4 should do about 4 miles in daily use. Longer journeys are more expensive, so for a 300 mile journey the first 200 miles will be at 2.5p, and the last 100 miles at 18 pence , so an average of about 7.5 pence.

My company car (have to have an EV - no choice) is up for renewal early next year (yes I know that’s 12 months away!) and the MG4 is top of my list for now. I can afford the XPower or the Extended range on my scheme (they are pretty much the same price, which I didn’t expect as my scheme includes insurance and I thought the XPower would be much higher).
I know the Extended range will be the better car to get for practicality, but the XPower is now top of my for one simple reason. Call me shallow, but that Racing Green paint job is beautiful!
