My dad had a Volvo 340 as our family car when I was younger. I’d love to have one at some point 😊

I had a 340 gl 83 model back in 1987. I was at the grand old age of 19 then. I took to over 200k and then part exchanged it for a 360 gls. Then I had a 340 gle saloon. Lots of memories for me.

One thing that has always puzzled me about the Volvo 300 series is the gearbox and clutch setup, I know the gearbox on them is on the back axle, but how does that work with the clutch?

Owned a manual G reg 827 Vitesse in the late 1990s. Then a couple of 200bhp 820 Vitesse's through to 2010ish First 820 Vitesse was a saloon, but I missed the hatchback versatility...then I missed the saloon's lack of creaks and rattles... I personally think the revvy Honda engine deserves a manual gearbox. But that's moving away from the wafty luxo-barge ethos of the Sterling and 827 coupes. 820 T16 turbo in my two Vitesses was genuinely very grunty low down, but quite coarse. Bit of a flying machine if you hustled it. Loved them all, but I'm a bit odd 😅

My old man had a montego vanden plas 2.0 back in the 90’s it was a rusty old B reg but it was one of the smoothest cars I’ve ever driven, I have a bit of a soft spot for these because of that car 👌

I remember my first sales job and being taken to the dealer in Leeds in January 1991 to collect the E reg Volvo 340 GLE from its 66000 mile service, it was the same colour!

I really have a lot of respect for the time and energy you are investing in these cars! Looking forward to Part 3 👍 Maybe someday, I need to buy a 360 too.... spend most of my childhood in the back of one but actually never got to drive one! In Sweden where I live even nice examples are not worth a lot, if you can find one that is.

Seeing under that bonnet brings back memories of working on my 87 340 GL and 89 340 GLE, in the days when I could easily change the oil, sparkplugs and points myself 😊 Great wee cars, the GLE especially as it was the neatly designed saloon 🥰

I enjoyed the review of the 800 coupe. I feel you are spot on with comments with build and quality it’s not the best but definitely not the worst. I’ve owned a Mk1 827 fastback and a Mk2 827 sterling coupe loved both of them. I’ve purchased just over a year ago a Mk2 820 Vitesse turbo fastback it’s definitely rough around the edges but it shifts. The beeping sound when using the windows means it needs a reset. Think you hold the button for a few seconds when up. This will let the roof and windows work with one shot lowering etc. Had a 820 SLi and a 2.5 Sterling back in the day.

How does the montego turbo compere to the meastro turbo to drive?

My first car was blue but it was sedan 99' which looks better. I found a UNIQUE Carisma GDI on sell this week in my country Turkey, It has 165HP from factory. A engine that was on Mitsubishi Dion. It has low mileage, I'm considering to buy it. My old '99 Carisma GDI burned a lot of oil tho. But it never let me down on the road.

EEK! The Skoda Vapid. All the jokes were well deserved. They rotted big style which is why none are left, the engine block ws aluminium while the head was cast iron, go figure. The build quality was awful. You were better off with a low mileage British or Western European car for the same price. People bought them for the warranty and boy did you need it. Nothing like the quality stuff Skoda produce today.

Gorgeous but not for me. 99% of these cars with the 2.7 litre engine were PRNDLs and any decent petrol-head hates autos. A 4 door saloon or hatch with the 2.7, five speed manual and no rust would be perfect.

Those Honda 2.7s where silky smooth.

Montegos maestros common for rear arches. Watch for outer metal filler neck rotting will crumble rust into tank pour fuel on ground when filling up to. Nice cars to drive had few inc mgs.

I have an original C15D 1989 coachbuilt model I hope to have it restored. People have told me its a very rare model could you or anyone on channel advise me if this is true best wishes from Scotland

I have a very early 1987 820si, which I love. It would probably be the last car I’d sell from my collection.

Great content - lovely car - I has a lowly 2L in the same colour back in the 90s - the Coupe is very rare now - the worry with these cars is even a minor bump can result in the Ins Company writing the car off - I hope not and the owner can enjoy it for years to come

Really great review, thank you. Great car, I owned a later model 800, a four door saloon with the early KV6 auto. It’s the only car that I wished I’d kept. I bought it for next to nothing with only 34k miles. Two years of cheap motoring and sold it for a profit, happy days.

I love these; I have a '98 Vitesse Coupe that I'll never sell, so comfortable, fast whether b roads or motorways. In many ways prefer it to my SD1 Vitesse, and certainly faster..

I had a 800 Vitesse in the same colour as this one , it went like a rocket

In the late 90's I was working as a valeted in a garage in Wigan and I remember doing a full valet on one of these. This one was also in dark green, but it was a solid colour, not metallic. I didn't like that to start with, but it grew on me and by the time I'd finished I thought it really suited the car (though it would inevitably need more attention to keep poking tip top). It had the cream leather which, IMO, looked more special than the grey here. I disagree that the rear is plain though, I'd describe it (ignoring the awful looking towbar) as classy and discreet and I am so happy that it does not have a rear spoiler! Truly lovely car and very underrated.

Just spotted your video on this. Your 740 is the spitting image of mine! Same colour (Green Blue metallic) and same interior colour & trim too. Mines an auto though. There’s a vent in the front footwells that you can close off. Sometimes these can leak but can be re-sealed. Speedo in-op might be the drive gear stripped off. People reset the trip clock while driving which breaks the teeth off the plastic gears behind when the plastic gets old & brittle. Pretty sure replacement gears are available. Sunroof leaks are usually blocked drains, but there’s also a putty type stuff under the inner frame which dries out and lets moisture through. Mine had this issue which destroyed the headlining (like yours!) so I stripped it all out, sealed it, cleaned it and made new headlining. Not particularly easy but transformed the interior. Check the floor for rust too. Favourite places are the little areas around the front jacking points. Engines are absolutely indestructible. Check your injector seals. Also there’s a breather system on these (known as a flame trap) the breather element sits under the inlet manifold inside a black plastic cup type thing that has a few hoses coming in & out. The element inside gets blocked with oil residue which then over pressurises the crankcase causing oil leaks. Sometimes it’s enough to force oil vapour out of the oil filler cap or even blow the dip stick out of its tube! Interior plastic is a nightmare! It gets incredibly brittle with age and just explodes into a million bits if you even look at it funny. Some things are available new old stock but for most of it you need to look for good used bits. I had an 820 auto. The gearbox kickdown was brutal from 4th to 3rd on the motorway and the interior was not holding together with a peeling dashboard. The electrics would go on strike BL style, one out all out then 5 minutes later everything worked again.

The met police ran the 827,s for traffic cars for a few years

I owned a silver 800. Coupe. 1992 k plate. The Honda mechanicals were brilliant but the rover coachwork was a bit tacky to be honest.. but overall a very nice luxury barge... 😂

I had a 1993 820 Vitesse fastback in BRG. It was an epic car did insane mileage and set a serious record from Scotland to South West England back in 2003 that I cannot list the details of on here. I expected the hard drive was going to have lead to issues but it never did.

I'm with you on tow bars but I instantly rule out buying any car with a tow bar fitted as you have no idea what sort of weight it's been dragging around and how often.

I saw a little Rover for sale way back in the 2000's ...... a diesel 2000 hatchback ...... leather trim and Air Con 🙂 . Yeh Peugeot engine ....... incredible mpg ....."old british interior" ...... and A/C .....🙂.... (drive it all day) . Lovely luxury car you have there 🙂

Beautiful car but finding one in the Netherlands is impossible; they were always rare, these days they're gone unfortunately.

A great channel! Well done Chris for promoting old basically BL. They almost got it so right 😭. During the 80's/90's I owned and worked on many Maestros/Montegos. The MG 2.0 Efi was very understated. However, a word of warning on the 'O' series engine concerning the engine breather tube, the internals go rusty, distinintgrate and the parts flow around the engine with premature end of life to the crank bearings and oil pump, be warned! Seen it many times. Knew a bloke in the 90's who put the 820 16v engine in the Maestro, very nice, yet again Leyland, so close yet so far😢😢😢. Great channel 👍👍😍
