Andrew did not play anything substantially crucial in the band, and he did not represent an essential musical input either, He was in depeche MODE just because he was Martin´s best friend since school days.
He was there for a reason! He did play bass in COS and synth bass lines live from 1980 to around 1983 and he was really good at it. He was MLG's best friend, being always there for him so Martin could feel safe facing strong personalities of Dave and Al and that gave him A LOT more confidence, especially in the studio. People who don't see that are ignorant to a core. Sorry, but that's what it is really.
