Martin Gore of Depeche Mode being a mess for 10 minutes. If you're interested in more questionable Depeche Mode content, follow me on Instagram @martinscountrysticker
In 93 my best mate and I went to the club DM were going to for a drink after their show in our little town. We waited hours for a gap to sneak past the bouncers and get to the VIP section where they were. The moment arrived and bam we were at Depeche Mode’s table. We said hi and before we could finish telling them how great they are, Martin invited us to sit and we had Margeritas with our hero’s. At first all I could get out was ‘do you know the Cure’ and my mate ‘why didn’t you play ‘Somebody’. Afew cocktails later it was just like hanging with an older brother and his mates. Really good guys. Martin signed my mates ID book ‘don’t arrest for dinking and driving, the law of Gore!’
You are so lucky!!! I'm actually jealous!!!
You asked them about The Cure?!?
Hilarious!
@@wolfiesworld9361 Back in 2016, during a book signing at Barnes & Noble I asked The Cure's former Drummer, Lol Tolhurst if he was friends with Depeche Mode and he told me & my two friends yes & that they used to hang out all the time back in the day and I couldn't have been happier!
what a wonderful memory to cherish!
@@robynsegg Perry Bamonte’s (guitarist for The Cure) brother Daryl was Depeche Mode’s long time road manager and friend. And after Alan Wilder left Depeche Mode Robert Smith asked him to join The Cure (he declined the offer). Also, The Cure covered World In My Eyes for the 1998 tribute album to Depeche Mode. The two bands have great respect for each other.
Not trying to make light of his battle with alcohol, but the “sometimes I fall out of chairs” line is about one of my favorite things ever said ever
Me too!
As fellow alcoholic i can say i found it hilarious too, i fall out of chairs too sometimes 😂
I once spent a whole night repeatedly falling out of the same deep couch. Reportedly.
I am ok with dying, but before I go, I'd like to hang out with Martin for an hour and talk about life. What a phenomenal force of nature.
Me tooooooo and have a coffee with Dave ❤🖤
.......about live in generell... hihihi
that's the most relatable thing I've ever read
That's a great thought, although even if I don't get the chance, at least I know, thanks to Martin, that when I die, I can expect to find God laughing.
Same here ! He’s a seriously talented guy. I love his laugh 😹
The fact that Martin somehow got arrested for playing his music too loud is surprising funny 😂
This should be rated R because it's loaded with Gore
How he was able to write all those melancholic, sad and dark melodies being such a joy and good humorous person is beyond me, or is it what success brings?
Hey! Well, in my opinion, he had a lot of traumatic events in his life; absence of his father when he was a child, death of his sister, problems with alcohol or bad relationship with his wife... So I think he is nice and funny guy to hang out with, but all those sad events in his life definitely affected him and his own philosophy.
tears of a clown. One of the best
He's British isn't he? That answers your question I think 🙂
Martin thou does suffer from depression and has been a heavy drinker he suffered a near fatal hart attack years ago
It’s perhaps naive to assume that how someone or something appears on the surface is an exhaustive reflection of their nature
"Martin, you're a Sex God!"
You, sir, are correct.
Especially with a chicken on his lap !!😌!😆😆💋💋💋❤️
"I don't think I've ever tried to be anything other than a weirdo." ~ Martin Gore
Mart will always be my favorite DM member.
He doesn't have to try. Just sayin'.
It's all about Dave!
Martin Gore is one of the best songwriters to walk the earth. He’s my Bob Dylan.
this band has got me through so much in my life.
You have helped them moreso.
Same
Same
definitely

Martin usually keeps to himself in interviews and never really says much - but if you see all the snippets in a row like this it becomes clear there is a lot more going on with the guy than it may look superficially... full of surprises!
This is gold, Martin's laugh and sense of humour are great! Hope you will do more parts with him and the other DM members as well!
If I could hang with anyone on the planet just for a day, it would be Mr. Martin Gore. Incredible talent, hilarious, and a fascinating dude.
Oh yes♥️♥️♥️♥️
Me aswel
I did and it was the most surreal experience of my life to the point of unpleasantness. Not him, me.
@@Bombbashable I gotta ask - can you expand on that answer?!? No problem if not, but ... wow!!!
@@AustinApologue Did my last reply not get through? I don't see it here.
The irony being... Martin hasn't ever been that much of a mess. And anytime he has, he pretty owns it as if it was intentional. He is one solid bloke.
Apparently "being a mess" is now slang for "expressing wit and personality spontaneously and in a slightly off-kilter way".
“Are you a boy or a girl?”
We would never hear such question nowadays
I'm surprised that host guy had to ask. Martin might dress a bit odd by his sensibilities, but he doesn't look like a girl. And are you sure that question wouldn't be asked today? Doesn't it always have to be asked instead of assumed like in the past? Of course, one could ignore gender altogether, but if it mattered for some reason, then today apparently it must be asked. The real issue might be that more and more people would have trouble answering the question.
Different time.....I was a child still remember ...Italy 80s...Mike Bongiorno... he had a peculiar sense of humour... I don' t think he wanted to offend... just different time and sensibility ...❤
So what?
what
Yes you would with all this non-binary bolloxology.
00:25 "I'm half black" - I wonder how many ppl really know that fact
I suspect not a lot.
We do
Oh shit...He really is..He said that and I thought that is in poor taste Martin...
So I guess his blonde hair wasn't natural?
Another interesting fact is that Dave is apparently of Malaysian descent through his biological father. I wonder how many people know this, I sure didn't know before! I think it's pretty cool!
@@Kyubone Yeah I knew this. It IS cool.
"Martin Gore being a fucking legend for 10 minutes" . There, I fixed the tittle for you.
It's southern slang I believe for adorable so I think the title is complimentary.
I love his light joking happy humor. He's a legend. Martin, Alan, Dave and Fletch... the 4 best of DM.
that's so funny, when I hung out with Martin( we were drinking at the hotel lounge, st pete first night of the touring the angel tour.) the young woman he was with had a cape like that and he put it on, held it up to his face, was acting like Bela Lugosi and running up to Fletch and I and going "who am I!?" it was funny. Martin is a really sweet and genuine person.
when I am having a bad day, I just watch these clips to cheers me up. Fabulous.
Never bought the whole “painfully shy” thing about Martin that I’ve read in various books.
I don't get it either, there is zero evidence of it
"Introverted" or "reserved" might be more suitable.
Shy in public, not so much. But let's just say that Martin is extremely reserved and private when it comes to his personal relationships with others. To illustrate, after Fletch, his main confidant, died, Martin finally had to forge enough of a relationship with Dave so that they could discuss things and work out their differences without Fletch. Even after having been in the same band for more than 40 years, Dave had never managed to get that far with Martin, that is until now, with Martin being forced to fend for himself. Martin is more than old enough and mature enough to fend for himself, obviously, but he never did before because he'd never had to and didn't want to.
How can a person know another person and work with him in a creative endeavor for several decades without having some kind of functional working relationship?! They didn't have to become buddies (although that would be nice), but even bandmates (in other bands) who hate each other and don't see eye to eye usually have some kind of direct relationship when it comes to their work. And when they argue, they're usually not shy about it. Martin, however, is in fact very shy about such things, especially if it involves arguments or confrontations, which Fletch had always done on his behalf. Most of those who know Martin personally never really feel like they've gotten to know him, even after years and years of working with him. I'm sure that Alan felt like that, and as a result, he never really felt like part of the band, himself. So in private, Martin can indeed be "painfully shy" in certain ways. It has nothing to do with being able to go out and have some drinks and some laughs, socialize superficially, or speak in public. He has never been shy about those things. Regarding himself and getting close to others in private, however, he is shy to the extreme.
I think he is painfully shy. As a former alcoholic myself, alcohol is great to make you forget your insecurities. It shuts don't that part of you that questions things about yourself; strips away inhibitions. I reckon he used alcohol to overcome that shyness and used it as a coping mechanism. He was also using it to self-medicate his anxiety disorder. He used to have terrible panic attacks.
I adore his laugh! He’s a mastermind, a genius and an amazing artist! Love Mr. Martin L. Gore 🖤
His laughter is the best 😹
"You will notice the ample, gothic, circumference." thought that was an old stereotype. guess not. LOL priceless
‘I wanna tell you something, I’m half black!’ I felt that lmao
I wonder if he'd just learned it himself. Otherwise, it's a super weird thing to say in that context. :D
@@malovelaHe found out about it when he was 14 apparently
@@lavendertoastbun Then it IS super weird. :D
@@malovela He was 30 years old when he learned that, not 14.
@@lavendertoastbun I had heard it was when his wife was first pregnant that he found out because his mom figured she better come clean about it before there were any surprises in expectations with the new birth. Supposedly his dad was an American G.I.? I’d love to know the story behind it.
Jesus 18 hours in jail just to pay a $50 fine? Seems a bit overkill
he really is half black then... 😅 18 hours in jail for a $50 fine is excessive
@@rumblefish9 in an American city? yeah that was racism lmao
My very first DM concert was 101 in Pasadena. To this day, it was the best concert I’ve ever experienced🤗. I also ditched school to have them sign my album at Beverly Connection when a riot broke out. I was grounded for a month, but have no regrets 😑 Since then, I’ve seen them at every Los Angeles concert and four times in London and Berlin, saw Martin at the Mayan in LA too.
I’m 48 now and will be at Inglewood CA and the London concert in June. 🤗🥰 I’m already getting into the mood 😎
Wish i had a time machine because the Pasadena Rose Bowl would be my first stop, absolutely packed that concert.I think the story went don't do that venue because American's prefer their rock music,(the rest is history) DM smashed it,something like 60,000 +.
If im being honest ive not seen them live, own a few albums though."Ultra" blasted out on my old Technics & Jamo speakers countless times.
I saw ELO in 86 at Birmingham NEC & David Bowie in 87 at Roker Park Sunderland.
The good old days.💯
David Bowie,Andy Fletcher.🇬🇧 & Tom Petty.🇺🇸 RIP.
Keep your eyes open for that "time machine,"stay safe bro.👍
Enjoy - I will see them in Toronto 🎉 November 5th my husband’s birthday surprise. We’ve been fans since the 80’s and now our sons are too.
Lucky you...i'm too poor to buy a ticket for their show.
I was at the first show of the MFTM tour at the San Diego Sports arena, and the last show at the Rose Bowl. My girlfriend (now wife of 35 years) won tickets on KROQ. Best show ever. Best food fight ever.
I wonder if he still remembers me. Pasadena 1988 at the Mall... I was 18 years old and I was just about to close the jewelry store and in walked Martin. I walked up to him and asked if he was in the band Depeche mode. He just smiled at me and walked out.
Love this, great to see Martin in real light,he is the oil that keeps the band we all love rolling, long may it last DM
Wonderful stuff. The bit where the guy near the front screams ‘Martin, you’re a Sex God!!’ is priceless!
That was fun! I've never ever seen any of these clips so it was cool to see them now. Thanks for the video!
What was naughty Martin up to at 0:36? As I recall this clip was from the Songs of Faith & Devotion electronic press kit, so 1993, when he'd been with Suzanne Boisvert for 4 years and whom he would marry a year or so later. Looks like Martin had arranged a call girl who showed up in the middle of filming lol. But if he was up to no good, why wouldn't the scene have been deleted from the EPK? Perhaps he had an understanding with his soon-to-be wife that he was a free man while touring the world? Even if that were true it seems an unsavoury (at least from his girlfriend's perspective) scene to have shown the world ... I've always wondered about this clip.
I'm not going to speculate on Martin's relationship at the time but you can probably say the same about Clean.
I think it's safe to say that the scene was staged as the girl showing up was mic'd. They were really going for that over-the-top rockstar image for the EPK with Fletch having a parrot and a goldfish in his "office", and Dave in that candle-lit room.
Still a very "interesting" clip which is why I included it ;)
@@mysilentface Yeah, I don't think it's possible that Martin / the band would publicize his cavorting with escort girls lol. And yet he truly seemed off-put. Maybe he's a good actor ;)
It was staged very spinal tap humour. Fletch with his parrot, Dave looking like Jesus Christ and all that shit. They did it for fun.
Definitely staged...
I remember it being shown at a fan club convention back then in London... Found it really funny...
I also remember the crowds reaction when it was told/confirmed that Dave had grown his hair long and had a beard... Ooooh, the disbelief...😮😱🤣
Good days/memories as a fan... Little did we know what was actually happening behind the scenes...😔
Martin has always been an innocent boy.
There really is no one else on this planet like Martin Gore.
Dave Gahan
Can you imagine that Gore was drunk on almost every concerts he's done for more than 20 years.
Yup, the other of his two addictions...
They all were to some degree (and occasionally marinated), except maybe Fletch sometimes.
Martin reminds me of Stan Laurel sometimes.
now that you said it...youre right
Here’s another fine mess you’ve gotten me into..
Thanks for this. Now I can't unsee it...
I've always thought this too! Never thought somebody would agree with me :D
They are musical genius kings
I tried very hard to look like Martin Gore back in 1988.
Absolutely loved the hair!
Photos please
Cool. How'd that work, are you biracial too?
@@yeahaboutthatthough3656 I wonder if he actually is biracial or it is a legend. He does not look half-black, although it is conceivable. Would be interesting to look at his results on a genetic test which would easily be able to tell African admixture.
@Humanophage He definitely has the hair texture for sure 🤔
@@Humanophage more than likely his black father was biracial himself. but his hair is his blackest feature.
10:08… “Home to our families… some of us didn’t have families left”. The guilty laughter from him and Dave. And Dave looking sheepish… “again”.
can you explain what Martin means by that?
@DonHaka Dave was divorcing with Teresa Conroy then.
40 years of brilliant songs
I love seeing a performer's lighter, playful side. It's fun.
Love this. What a great few Martin central clips.
2:00 Andy's expression when Martin just said "new age" 😂
DM is the best band in the world
I don’t k ow of any other band who has accomplished so much and explored into so many styles of music.
Faithless is another versatile band like DM . Too sad that Maxi Jazz just passed away . Big lose for a music industry
They are so adorable . ❤
Does anyone know where the frownies clip is from? The back and forth about the teeth gets me every time!
The Big Ones
2:57 is such a Spinal Tap moment
And 0'33" isn't?
For better or worse Depeche Mode is my life
Martin is an incredibly witted and funny guy.
Since the beginning I loved DM.
They've been always and will be always a part of my life ❤.
RIP Fletch - you will never be forgotten xxx ❤
Saw Martin and a girl looking at gold cutlery in Harrods once 🙂
I met him once, at a Nitzer Ebb gig ...very non assuming friendly chap.
I need that clip at 7:45 of someone shouting "MARTIN YOURE A SEX GOD" isolated
It hurts to see Andy around😢
I read this and suddenly my heart sunk as I remembered he was gone
I know
It hurts more to *not* see Andy around.
He's so adorable ❤
Martin is a legend. Great bloke
You can hear me laughing in the background during the kissing joke. Martin’s laugh is infectious and i love his sense of humor and laughing with him!
Interesting to see how Mart is playing thereminvox, I wonder what song did DM used it for
That clip is from the sessions for Sounds of the Universe. My best guess would be the intro of In Chains.
@@mysilentface yes, you are absolutely right, I can hear clearly some sounds of theremenvox in intro of In Chains! Well spoted! Thank you!
Yep... Definitely one of the biggest myths about Martin is that he is "so shy"...🤣🤣🤣 Great video...👍👍👍
only when drinking does he open up lol
@@basehead617Yes, we all know drinking has the ability to make us lose our inhibitions, that's understandable, and I do not doubt that it had it's part to play, but it still doesn't mean he's shy., (painfully, as some would choose to believe).... I think he just has a preference, like most people, as to what he chooses to keep private, away from public gaze,, and keeps things to himself or between those closest to him who he trusts like family and those whom he considers to be his true friends...
He's a classic introvert.
Martin is not so shy in public. The thing about him is that it's hard to really get to know him in private, even after working with him for decades. He tends to avoid discussing and working through difficult issues, and had always let Fletch do it for him. Now that Fletch is no longer there, for the first time Martin has actually had to form more of a relationship with Dave than they'd ever had before. Sure, they were "close" in some ways, having so many major shared experiences, but in most respects they were barely acquaintances, and whether they could ever become friends or not, they had no personal, direct business relationship, either (Fletch would always step in and speak with Dave for Martin).
Martin is really rather odd and unusually "shy" in this way, not so much in public or when socializing on a superficial level. Dave has commented recently that they've been forced to try to be friends and real bandmates for the first time, after more than 40 years (!).
9:13
as weird as this guy is by his personality and the way he dresses.. dont be fooled, he's the brains behind Depeche mode, and i thank him for being apart of a great band.
His band always look a bit embarassed everytime he turns up in his harness...
7:53 "Martin, you're a sex god!" 🤣
“Frownies”
For years, I thought the brilliant physicist Brian Cox was asking about Martin Gore's skin care lol
Martin is amazing! I love his voice & his laugh; he's just so adorable! Great clips of Martin just being himself. MLG ❤️

OMG, surprised Martin didn't end up knocking on deaths door the amount of drugs and booze he did, thankfully he didn't go down the same path as Dave and got clean 😍😍😍
