hiking and camping

  • I headed east of the cascade range to hike Teanaway Butte and camp out overnight. The weather here has been rainy and cloudy lately so I took advantage of a couple if clear days for the nice views.
    I camped at Indian Camp Campground. I camped in the horse camping section which is only a few years old and is in great condition. Camping is free if you have a Discover Pass. There is a pit toilet that is very clean and stocked with toilet paper but bring your own hand sanitizer. There is no trash service here so pack it out.
    The hike to Teanaway Butte is about 9.5 miles or a bit over 15 Km (round trip) and most of it follows along an old road that is gated off. It’s a steep hike with roughly 2200 feet (670 m) of elevation gain/loss.
    Jennifer Lupine hiked it not that long ago. Here is a link to her video:

      Thanks Jake, I try to keep it basic and simple. Going for a hike and camping doesn’t always have to look like an Indiana Jones adventure, those can be fun but simplicity is relaxing.

      Thanks. Usually our sunny weather doesn’t really start till July so it was nice to take advantage of a clear day for this outing.

    Beautiful area and nicely filmed. I could almost smell the sweet mountain air. Loved the flowers. I use to collect calcite in the rocks in this area years ago. Nice new campground, you were lucky to camp before the horse campers used it, will be full of flies once they use it.

      It was a pleasant trip, and having a campground with only two other campers in it is nice too.
      I think we were looking at Mount Stewart just a few days and a fair bit of miles apart from each other.

    Good one Scott! I’ll bet it killed you leaving that tree in road, not to mention the trees in the trail! Ya can’t get em all though and you certainly do more than your share up in the brush. I was laughing to myself thinking , oh he’s going to loose some sleep thinking about those downed trees😂

    • @scottalpine

      Yes indeed. The ones on the trail are beyond my current physical fitness. It’s just over 4.5 miles of up to get there so I’m going to let nature get those.
      The one in the road does bother me though, but it’s quite a drive to get back there so I guess I’ll leave that one for someone else. It would be a good test on the 350i I just got though.

    • @ElectricDanielBoone

      @@scottalpine Yes, and those logs in your yard you referred to will certainly be a good test. I hope that 350i does OK for you.

    • @scottalpine

      @@ElectricDanielBoone Yup, it’s good so far I cut the logs up yesterday. It took 3 of 4 power lights to get through them.

      @@scottalpine can you tell me what the date is on the battery you got with your 350i Scott? Husky is squared away enough to put the mfg year in big print right on the side of their batteries. Mine were 2023, so they weren’t too old. Greenworks has sent me batteries through Amazon that were over two years old already! I’d just send them back, as it degrades the battery’s lifespan to sit unused and self-discharged. Some Greenworks batteries didn’t have a date at all, but they arrived with low voltage, so they had been in storage for who knows how long. Anyway, that’s one reason why I went with Husky, it looks like they know battery self life is important, and want to deliver a good product.

    • @scottalpine

      @@ElectricDanielBoone Mine is also 2023. I think I’ll do like you and just buy another saw for the extra battery since it’s $300 for just the battery or $400 for another saw and battery and then I’ll have the spare bar, chain and charger.

    Nice outing. Looks like you repacked the truck. Seems like every time I head out without a chainsaw I run into the same situation. How were the flying insects?

    • @scottalpine

      I packed pretty light for this trip and didn’t anticipate needing a saw or recovery gear so I guess someone else will get to get that tree.
      The bugs were basically nonexistent. I did pack some bug away stuff but I think I only saw one mosquito and it didn’t bother me.

    • @allentisthammer4763

      The bugs are alive and well up into the Olympics. I plan on scoping out Blue lake in the next week or so. I've repacked for summer camping, don't think the snowshoes are needed!

    • @scottalpine

      @@allentisthammer4763 The bugs should stay in hibernation longer. If you’re heading to the Blue Lake in the north cascades I saw a trip report on WTA from a few days ago that there is still a lot of slushy snow on the trail and they even used micro spikes for the last mile.

    How are those bag meals you add hot water to?

    • @scottalpine

      They aren’t too bad but usually have a fairly high sodium content. I have a whole bunch that I bought years ago. They are quick and easy but not super cheap. I always just guess on the water and have been lucky so far.
