First, I always try to determine the direction of the predominant weather. If it comes in from the west, I put the door of the tent facing east. I also sweep the area under the tent to clear out annoying small rocks and pebbles. I also put a tarp down and then put the tent on that. Keeps the tent material from wearing out. I do like the idea of the screen tent. Altogether nice campsite setup. Nice family too!
Wow. This is a really cool set up. I have never thought of getting a tent for the picnic table. I think I will implement this because it will also help with any bugs etc. Thanks for the ideas!
Pretty young wife and sweet little family. Looks like one on the way. Appreciate ideas and applications. Already watched another of your videos on setting up your tarp. Already helped me change my mind on my purchases. Thank you and God bless you in Jesus Christ.
@@watchman9198 I just went camping over August 4th, basically doing the same thing (tent, screen canopy over table, and large tarp over everything, campfire tripod, and portable propane stove). Compared to the people around us, we had a lot. The people next door and across just had a tent, and they went out to eat for every meal or had pizza delivered to the campsite. So it kind of depends on perspective I guess.
After my husband died, I sold all our old camping stuff that had shock cords (we had several tents) and bought "instant" everything so I could set up by myself. Even bought a compact, nesting Lifetime brand picnic table and benches so I wouldn't have to worry about spiders, splinters and trying to relocate heavy units (if they were even in the campsite). Also gave up on our old white gas Coleman camp stove and bought propane instant ignition stove. Thank goodness technology advanced and prices became reasonable, so I didn't have to give up on camping!
My #1 tip for camping is ALWAYS have your tent readily accessible! It's the first item to come out of my truck and not buried under, behind or on top of all the other "stuff" we dragged with us! Everything stays in the truck until the tent is up and then I unload sleeping bags, bedding etc. into the tent protecting it from the elements. Did you check for dead trees or branches and where is your ground cloth?
That's good advise about packing the tent so it's accessible. We don't use a ground cloth because the Coleman bathtub floors are made of decent tarp material which keeps water out well enough. Yes, I usually check for dead trees, but the DNR does a pretty good job of keeping the sites cleaned up and safe. Thanks for pointing these things out. There is probably a lot more that I could have said in this video, but I might just have to make more videos.
I will be checking the ground more carefully after my last trip I have a hole in my tent floor. Over 15 years of doing this and I never thought a root would do that. Will use a spare tarp or at least a small rug or maybe a carpet from my car floor if it is the only spot
I need to stop watching these camp set up videos. I end up buying more and more things 😂. Anyway, thank you for the videos. Lots if great ideas for first time campers such as myself. I saw your other video on how to set up a tarp over your site. Another good video!

I'm going next week for the first time since I was about 10 (I'm 31 now) no wife or kids so im keeping it super simple....more of a fishing trip honestly but this just rekindled my love of camping instantly! I will definitely be stealing some of your setup! Thank you!
As a long time camper I love your set up! I have the same dimension tarp but use it as a ground cloth for our tent. Will have to invest in another tarp as well as the rope and poles you use. Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks! Good to hear from another veteran camper! And an overhead tarp is hard to beat when it rains. I have a video specifically on how I set that up on the channel if you’re ever interested.
I enjoyed watching your video very much, I love going camping as much as I can, I wish you and your family the best. God Bless All of you, can't wait to hit the road, going to Yosemite next month, 🙏🙏🙏
Great vid!The Coleman Red Canyon is the best designed tent for Extreme wind and rain made by Coleman.Waterproof it and it's good to go.Many times I have seen Hazardous weather blow in and the Red Canyon is the only tent left standing in the campground.
Man, this was awesome. I'm pretty green when it comes to camping. I never thought about the screen tent. I assume it's to keep your eating area free of flies. I'll have to consider that for my next camping trip which will be a bit more remote than my previous trip.
Where did you buy your screen tent? I'm from the Phils and that was our problem when we went camping recently. We can't avoid the flies. Thanks for this helpful video.
Hi😊 This video is fantastic! Your set-up looks so inviting, can’t wait for my camping trip in a couple weeks. What kind of air pump did your wife use for the air mattress? Thank you
I use a truck bed tent, and specifically got the one I did because it does not have a bed liner attached to it. This allows me to set up the tent while only opening my tonneau about 6", if it's raining.
I found them for sale on eBay years ago. Haven’t been able to find them for sale lately though. They are 10 ft wooden teepee poles that are made up of two halves which are connected with a metal coupler.
First time camping newbie here. This was really helpful. Would you recommend getting nylon rope or some other material - for tying the tarp up AND what length would you recommend I buy? Also, that pole that you used to prop the tent, which one was it?
Get what works for you. My ropes are 100’ nylon that has a little stretch to it. The poles are 10’ teepee poles I found on eBay. I also did a video specifically on the tarp if you’re interested in watching that.
Yes, you do need to get your own firewood. In Wisconsin, you cannot transport firewood outside of a 10 mile radius and will have to find it locally. I actually did a short video on where to find firewood for camping which is on my channel if you’d like to learn more.
The overhead tarp does make a big difference in the rain. And we don’t use a ground tarp because the tent we use does a good enough job of keeping water out.
@@theoutdoorrealm1658 - Not just water, but a little protection from rocks and roots, which can rub on the underside of the tent floor and eventually produce a hole. I've heard of some people putting down a tarp, then a moving blanket on top of that for a little cushioning and more insulation, and erecting the tent on top of the moving blanket. I'm going to try that moving blanket tip on my next camping trip.
Its a wooden teepee pole that breaks down into two pieces. Its 10 ft tall and does not adjust. Got it on eBay years ago but haven't seen them for sale in years. We have a video specifically on the tarp setup too if you're interested in more info on that.
Camera equipment definitely gets locked in the vehicle. We don’t have a generator or heater but we have a large power bank that we’ll either lock up in the truck or hide inter the picnic table. I suppose if we did have a generator, we may opt to chain it to a tree or the picnic table with a lock.

I thought you already answered, but where is this campsite located? And which one is your favorite in the Midwest? I just love any site with tall pines.
This site is in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern WI. Hard to say exactly which site is our favorite because there are so many good ones. If I had to pick one area to camp, Eagle River, WI area would be pretty high on my list.
How long do you usually camp for bro? I do this same setup ..and its always just for one night. Instead of looking forward to camping to get away from the world ..i postponed it cause the set up is such a PITA for one day lol
I fully agree with this setup being a pain. It’s a lot of work for a single night when you’re supposed to be relaxing. I prefer to camp a minimum of three nights, canopy or no canopy. Anything less than that doesn’t seem worth the effort. My idea of an ideal camping trip is five to six nights.
@@theoutdoorrealm1658 this is really a self evaluation situation on my part.. i can easily do this for 3 nights. But i falsely admit my job is more important. Nope. With the tarp material floors, we’ve never really had an issue. Plenty of people like to put a tarp underneath which is fine. We prefer not to unless the bottom of the tent isn’t tarp material or waterproof.
