Winter camping in a hot tent in the mountains #camping #hottent #pnw
Found a nice little spot in the snowy mountains to set up camp. After getting mostly set up and starting to gather wood I realized that I had forgotten my sleeping bag or quilt.
I keep two light weight blankets in the vehicle during cold months for emergencies so I set those up and I had plenty of clothes for layering so I wasn’t too worried. The wood stove also really helped.
One of the blankets is a 12v electric blanket but I only ran it for a few hours in the morning since I wasn’t sure my power station would run it all night.
It was 75° in the tent when I went to bed and as the fire died down it would get into the 30°s so I would add wood throughout the night.
I burn wood that I bring from home plus wood I find and when I go to bed I use Tacoma Fire Logs that seem to burn the longest.

I hiked out to Lost Lake which is where I attempted to backpack to earlier this year and where I backpacked to several years ago and made a not very good TH-cam video. They’ve done quite a bit of work on this trail over the years even rerouted a section to make it less steep and rocky. This is one of my favorite t...
Why I got rid of my 4 Wheel Camper

Winter camping at its finest! Nice and warm inside the tent, great food, snow outside!! I was going to ask before, what brand of tent/ awning is your blue picnic table cover? Not sure what you call those. Seems like yours is rain and snow proof- is it easy to secure from the wind? I really need one of those for shade and rain for summer car camping. Thanks Scott- have a Merry Christmas! 😄🎄🎄🎄
@@JenniferLupine It was a great campout, I’m glad I got to that spot before it got snowed out for the season. The pop up canopy I have is from Z Shade. Mine is at least 10 years old but probably closer to 15 years old and is definitely showing the age. I put a link in the description to one of the same size and brand sold at Lowe’s but it may be different since mine is older. It has held up great over the years and would be in better shape but I have not taken care of it like I should have. Leaving the tarp part attached to the frame all the time and going down rough roads has worn some holes in it. And the frame has a broken clip causing some sagging. But it’s definitely held up and come in very handy over the years.
@ Awesome! Thanks! I noticed it seemed to keep you dry in a recent video where it rained a lot!! Ok, pop up canopy- Z Shade- thanks and thanks for the link!!
@ Yup no problem, the one trip where I slept under it as my shelter I had another tarp on top of it but that was due to the holes worn in it over the years. I’m debating replacing it with the same thing or going up in size to a 12x12. I tried an 8x8 but they are too small for a rain shelter. Merry Christmas 🎄
@@scottalpine I’ll definitely check them out- we recently got a small camping trailer, but I still like to cook and eat outside, as long as the bugs are too bad, we’ll remember to take the blue off when we store it. 😉👌

@@goldfinger180024 There was a couple little slip n slides but fortunately I was able to keep going. Thanks for watching.
That drive in was a bit scary. whenever I see branches drooping across the road from the weight of snow I'm afraid a tree will come down and seal me in for the winter. Those evening shots looked very cold. The clouds being held back by the mountains made me think you were east of the cascades. hope your drone was ok.
@@easycamperdandog I was hoping for a nice time lapse of the clouds flowing over the hills but they didn’t seem to move too much. Drone seems ok, it’s hard to pilot and drive at the same time 🤣.
@scottalpine I was wondering if you were flying that drone or if it was using a follow me automation. Better than crashing the truck
@ Yes definitely better to drop the drone rather than the truck. I’ve thought about getting one with all the fancy tracking and obstacle avoidance features but for how little I use it I can’t justify the expense.
@@scottalpine oh my, I thought that all of them had the tracking and obstacles avoidance ! even the mini one that's just 200$ from DJI. it's not the case apparently so I am not going to buy a cheap one then, like you say I am not going to use it a lot so cannot justify the expense, furthermore in New Jersey where we don't have much places we can fly those
@ Yes some have the avoidance and tracking and some don’t. I use a DJI Mini 2, I believe the newer versions like the mini 3 and 4 have avoidance and tracking capabilities but I get by with my older model. I tend to not use it as much as I thought I would so dropping several hundred dollars on a newer one just doesn’t make sense. I also have a Hoverair X1 that does track a person and is light and easy to use but I still don’t use it much.
Well I'm looking forward to this in longer format. Looks like a fun camp, albeit a bit cold.

another nice one ! I remember your video from last year and recognized the trees you had cut too. I had also watched the old old one not so long ago. the snow was on and off depending on elevation I suppose and also facing north or south I guess. Another beautiful area and great hiking trails. After a cold spell from an Alberta clipper, it's warmish again here in New Jersey, I ditched the parka from last week and back to light jacket and light sweater...
Thanks. It’s a great hike to do especially when it’s not too crowded out. I’m glad they finally replaced the bridges, it makes it a lot easier for most people to be able to do the hike.
thank you for your round up of the reasons you got rid of your big rig. yes please make a tour of the new Nissan one or at least the features you like / dislike about this new set up and the hard top you got for it also. Looking forward to your next adventures specially now that it's winter and snow more or less (less for us in New Jersey, the snow the other day was a pure joke, it almost melted on contact with the ground and didn't event stick to the asphalt, was not even measurable 🤔
Once I’ve had the truck for several months I’ll make a quick video on what I like and dislike. It’s still too new to me to make an honest review at this point. Thanks for the video. We look forward to them. We think you made a wise choice.
Thanks. So far it’s been good, we’ll see what the future brings.
I try to head up there every other year or so to see how the forest repairs itself after the fire.
It’s a great hike to a beautiful area. I’m glad the fire didn’t totally devastate the place.
Ha ha, I totally thought you were camping! I like your tent. Steve Wallis has one without a floor that I like. My canopy is getting worn and I will have to replace it soon so I'm keeping my eyes open, (no longer manufactured).
@@easycamperdandog The floor in my tent is removable, I had considered getting an ice fishing hut originally but opted for the gazelle since I can remove the floor and I think I’ll be more likely to use it year round. My popup canopy is probably close to 15 years old and has definitely seen better days. I think it’ll be time for a new one after this winter. I have an 8x8 one but it’s not really enough shelter for rainy cold weather so I never use it. I’m thinking another 10x10 or possibly a 12x12 when I go for a new one. I’ll get one with walls like yours cause that is a great set up.
@scottalpine yeah the only thing wrong with my canopy is the velcro is not sticking as well as it used to
@ That’s frustrating, maybe you could add some snaps or some grommets and tie it together.
Those snow crystals brought back memories of snowshoeing thru similar crystals and they would sound like glass fragments as I walked. I used to love hiking in the dark, I would start about 3 am so if anything went wrong daylight was coming. Really enjoyed this video, nicely edited.
@@easycamperdandog Thanks Dan. It was a beautiful day to do that hike, it’s funny how even though it was cold it started out with no snow and at the lake it was nearly a foot deep. It’s definitely better to start in the dark as opposed to finishing in the dark, I got a bit of a late start that day and it took me longer to hike out than I had anticipated.
Agreed! That shot was beautiful!!

Scott another great video however I don't know if I would have gotten rid of my pickup truck and camper but then I'm old and lazy I just crawling back and go to sleep wouldn't have to set up a tent even though we have more room but I hope you enjoy your new setup Jake McClellan the Oregon boy😊
@@jakemcclellan8399 I may regret getting rid of it. I do miss the power and cargo capacity of the truck and the quicker camping set up that the camper offered but I do enjoy the tent camping too. Hard to say what the future will bring, I tend to never really be satisfied with whatever my current setup is so I’m always looking to change it.
That snow or ice at 5:15 is totally awesome
@@rdulaneyjr Yeah it was really cool to see, it stopped me in my tracks to just look around and see it everywhere.
I have a 2nd gen Frontier with short bed, I was sold for the Pro4X features over long bed at that time. I built a wood extension platform with barn doors to slide out on the tailgate. This way, I was able to sleep in my truck bed with canopy on it. You can check on YT, there are some examples might inspire you. Also, I’ve just ordered a tent with stovejack and a pellet stove for tents. Sleeping in the truck bed is good for the road trips, trailheads and national parks but also a tent that you can stand in it and cook your food over the stove is awesome.
@@onurk759 The pro4x trucks are nice. I’ve seen a few of those slide out things for sleeping in the bed. I hadn’t actually thought about making one but it could be a fun project and make for a quick set up. I might start thinking about doing one of those. Having a hot tent is great. I have 4 hot tents and 3 stoves. So far the mini peak xl is my favorite for a smaller space and quick set up. I have the seek outside large stove that I use in it (I just got the glass door for it). I turned my gazelle t4 tent into a hot tent by cutting out a screen for a window and I run a Winnerwell woodlander large in that. Had to make a few heats out of welding blankets but so far it’s held up. Being able to stand up is great. A pellet stove will probably run much longer than a wood stove, I usually rebuild the fire a couple times on really cold nights. Last trip I burned a couple Tacoma Fire Logs and they burned for hours. Only relit the fire once and it was still coals in there.
@ Your setups look nice and cozy, I used to have a titanium stove from Luxe when I used to live in Colorado. It was kinda small for me, I go to camping with my wife so always need bigger tents. Actually, my pellet stove just arrived a couple hours ago, it is a Greenstove Hori5. It burns wood and pellet both and has a oven in it if you burn in pellet mode. It is 30lb so not a backpacking stove but I’m gonna match with a Naturehike Dune tent for car/canoe campings. I haven’t tried any of these gear in the field yet but I live in WA now and I know finding dry firewood is not gonna be easy as Colorado anymore :) Btw, this brand sells pellet attachment for Winnerwell stoves as well, I love Winnerwell stoves. I ordered this Hori5 from them because price was nice for its features and build quality.
@ Interesting, I’ll have to look into the pellet attachment. Dry wood can be a bit harder to come by in Washington especially on the west side but it’s out there.
I looked at several "pop up" camper options, and ended up going with Alaskan 8 foot this year. They are expensive but I have been happy with it. Its just myself and a dog so the size is right. I have it on a diesel Ram 2500 4x4 so I can get pretty much where I want to go in the central Washington Cascades.
@@simcoebackcountry5998 That’s a great combo. I still look on facebook marketplace every once in awhile and see some older used Alaskans on there. Someday I may get an old 3/4 ton truck and get a canopy or an old Alaskan.
Scott I enjoyed your video very much it looked like a great day out doing a hike keep them coming keep this old man entertained Jake McClellan the Oregon boy😊
Thanks, I appreciate you watching, Jake. It was a really nice day out, a rare clear sunny day in the PNW.
I agree. Full size trucks are too wide for Cascade and Coast range exploring here in Oregon unless you are planning to bedline the whole thing. I've driven out with them and they get scratched to hell while my Tacoma is untouched.
@@RevN3 Your Tacoma still looks fantastic especially after all the adventuring you’ve done with it. Yup the midsize and older full-size trucks are a much better size for the cascades. Sometimes I think about getting another jeep but after having 7 of them I think I’m done…. Maybe. 🤔
@scottalpine My Tacoma looks good from 20 feet away or on video 😆 There is a reason I only wash it once a year!
I'm running a 1992 Toyota extracab with a 6 1/2 foot bed and a simple Leer canopy. I made a simple bed platform for sleeping. I've owned it for over 20 years and since it spent its early years in Central Oregon it's rust-free. I've totally rebuilt the engine and added a TruTrac limited slip rear dif and Rancho gas shocks. I don't do any crazy with it. This year I finished the Washington Backroads Discovery Route which I highly recommend. I'd like to do the Bend to Alvord Desert route if I can find a buddy to do it with.
@@highdesertforester That sounds like a perfect setup. Definitely have saved a ton of money having the same truck for the last 20 years. I wanted to do the WBDR in the big truck but never did get around to it. Some great camping spots and sights to see on that trip.
Sorry to see the big rig gone, but I can totally understand. I drive an old Ram megacab with a simple camp build inside my Snugtop. "Overlanding" has become a huge business. While alot of the gear is nice, I prefer the simple things in life. It's great to have choices for your lifestyle setup. Lol I did enjoy watching you navigate all those snowy roads on a pretty stock truck. Looking forward to your new chapter as I also enjoy winter camping. I'll enjoy it a little more when I figure out my diesel heater setup for my deep winter trips. Good luck with the new setup Thx for posting
@@mikes4352 Thanks for watching. Overlanding has definitely become very commercialized. It’s great that it’s become a nice community of people sharing a passion for getting out and exploring but still it’s just going out exploring and camping like has been done for decades. We don’t have to have all the trendy stuff to do that. The big truck was kinda of a blessing and a curse. I’ve had a lot of camping setups over the years and I’m sure this current one will change too. I still think the best setups are just sleeping under the canopy in the back of the truck, nice and simple. I think I might be able to make my diesel heater work in my gazelle tent.

@@Western-Wild It was a bit chilly. I didn’t venture too far into the cave I forgot to bring my bright headlamp so I’ll have to revisit it next summer.
The homesteaders had it very hard living in those conditions 24/7/365. A harsh land winter or summer -- very few stayed on for long.
@@BrianDoherty-e8s It was a rough life back then.
That looked like Derrick’s cave.
@@rxpusher131 Yup that’s it. I hope to fully explore next summer.
Where did you get the wood stove? How did you vent the smoke out of the tent? That’s burly having a dirt floor in the tent.
@ Tent stove is a Seek Outside large. It has a chimney for the smoke and the tent (Minipeak XL Pro) has a stove jack that is made to hold the chimney and protect the tent material from the heat. The tent also has a removable liner that covers nearly half the floor and I use a small tent foot print to cover part of the other half. Having a dirt floor for the tent can be a blessing and a curse. I don’t have to worry about burning a hole in the floor with the stove and I don’t have to worry about tracking in dirty shoes. But on the other hand it’s a dirt floor.
I was born in central Oregon, I went back for a Highschool reunion, and the smell of juniper and sage brought me back in time..
@@gonearoundthebendPNW I bet it was a great area to grow up in. I always enjoy my trips in that area.
That was quite an adventure traveling down here to Oregon Scott! You had a great setup for getting you through those cold nights out on the trail. 👍 Frontier looks like it’s fitting your needs well. I’ve overhauled our stable of vehicles too. Traded in our 2020 Cherokee TH for a 2024 Mazda CX5. Then traded in our 09 Beatle for some dough to buy our 06 4Runner for our new wheeler project.
@@ElectricDanielBoone Thanks. So far the frontier is doing pretty good. Definitely doing better on the mpg (averaging in the low 20s and the ford was in the mid teens). Glad I had the 350i for those trees, with the dewalt it would have taken quite a bit longer. I’m surprised to hear the Cherokee is gone, it was a very capable rig, be nice to see how you like the Mazda and 4Runner in comparison.
@ The “new” Cherokees have some serious reliability issues. Transmission went out on our 2017 TH before we got the 2020. 2020’s warranty was almost up, so I was getting nervous it’d go south too! I really liked our Cherokees, but needed a more reliable car for the wife and that’s where the Mazda comes in. No Cherokee, so no woods rig anymore and that’s where the 4Runner comes in. Pre 4Runner (only a month) I did take the Mazda up in the snowy woods a few times and it actually did amazingly well! Wife doesn’t appreciate me “wheeling” her nice new car though. 🤣
@ unfortunate about the reliability issues, new stuff is getting too complicated. Sometimes i think about getting an older truck but I hate to deal with the poor gas mileage. The wives always seem to get a little nervous when the new vehicle heads into the hills 🤣.
A nice video by a prepared and competent operator. I just love Central Oregon. I lived in Madras for several years.
@@highdesertforester Thanks. It took several lessons of being unprepared for me to learn the right balance of stuff to bring. It’s a beautiful area that I always enjoy exploring when I can get time to go there.
another excellent adventure ! Nice caves that you found, the second one, the biggest one is quite spectacular.
@@positiveattitudebymichusa Thanks! If I see a cave I must go adventuring in it. Next time I’ll have to bring my brighter headlamp and go all the way to the end.
In my home area! Let's go camping buddy!! I have some sweet spots!
@@PNWXMATT I keep meaning to explore that area more in the warmer months but somehow just make there in the cold.
Nice to see you went well prepared for the wind, you sure could see miles in that burn, quite the cave and views, nice to see the deer , that spot where they were was so beautiful, good job clearing road, interesting share👍
@@NatureInspiredSnipsnSnaps Thanks, I try to be prepared for what surprises may come. The deer were awesome to see I think saw at least 20 in that area.
Cool caves Scott. Noted the Where’s Wiseman sticker on your water bottle! Lots of fallen trees across roads out there!!
@@goldfinger180024 it’s a great area to explore, definitely need to go back again and again. The Wiseman’s have some great videos especially their goofy Halloween ones.
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Nice area, very beautiful! I really liked the mini splatter cone. I gotta get back down there next spring or summer. Those trees on the way out is what always worries me in the winter, getting out after camping. I would have had to chop off the branches and drive over the logs if they weren't too big. Nice filming in the cave, it looked huge!
@@easycamperdandog Thanks, I usually never run across trees on the way out and here there were two on the same day🤷♂️. That cave is huge, I had originally planned on fully exploring it but forgot my really bright headlamp and was wanting to get to a campsite while I still had daylight so next year I’ll plan on revisiting it. That mini splatter cone is something I wish I had in the back yard, it would make an awesome fire pit.
