great video and great timing. Just about to reset the tanks on my rack and wanted to see how a pro does it for ideas for myself. Keep up the great work!
Nice tank setup! Good to see you getting back to good old Akadama soil and hopefully it'll work for you as good as before. Without its leaching ammonia, you can do it fast and skip a long cycle.
Thank you for this Mark, you promised and you delivered. I'll be doing this sometime next year. It took me ages to get my crystal reds to breed and now I have hundreds, mostly down to the advice on your excellent channel. 🦐
Thanks so much, I'm sure this step by step very useful and needed, because many, especially new in hobbyst, start with only single aquarium and sure most of them start with aquascape like on this video, thumbs up, Marks
Glad it was helpful, i will post a shorts video on them in a few days so people can see they are all alive and still doing well after that fast restart.
Hey Mark, i know you are the freshwater shrimp king but i would love to see you trying to breed salt water harlequin shrimps!!! Keep up the good work 💗
Thats an absolutely terrible idea. It is hard enough to keep one harlequin shrimp alive even if you have an asterina infestation. More so a pair. A bunch of juvenile shrimps? Impossible. He probably would need to set up a whole room full of starfish breeding tanks. A better idea are Lysmata wurdemanni, thor amboinensis and lysmata kuekenthali
Hey Mark how are you? I do hope that all is well with you and your family 👪 ❤️. Hey great video, I have a tank that I have to restart but really didn't know we're to start. Thanks! 🤗
Hey Mark, there is also a sponge filter without air supply to buy, really quite. I use. Catching shrimp is like scratching a record😂. I was learning the fast way to clean and rebuild a good shrimp tank.
Pretty soon I'll be doing a 4ft aquascape shrimp tank, I have an ro filter which I use for my 24l now, atm I just mix to connectivity in a bucket then add. If I was to add pure ro to the empty tank and it has a tds of 50 or so would I add gh/kh+ to get it 50 above my target or include the amount already in there from soil, hardscape and plants etc. Just don't really have a way to store or drip so much pre mixed water is all.
what I always do is mix my salt the same way all the time and then just do water changes like normal, eventually it will all equal out to what you want.
hi Mark love your vids ! ( Tammy here from B.C. Canada) Im just starting my first Caridina tank. I have a question that I was hoping that you may be able to help me with. I have had a 10 gallon running for 2 months with plants and amazonian soil. can I take some soil out dry it and would it be cycled to use in another tank later. Thanks for any help and for all your wonderful shrimp keeping videos!
Thank you for the video. I've noticed in your previous videos your crystals would sit around 150tds? How come your now around 190tds? What pH would you recommend or is it better to focus on gh/kh/ph.
I added about 2 liters of ADA Amazonia to this tank 9 months ago th-cam.com/video/TW1njQxwDUE/w-d-xo.html I did a recent video of the same tank last week with thousands of baby shrimp in it.
Hi Mark, I am using this technique but I am using Fluval Stratum and it appears to be leaching quite a lot of ammonia (about 0.50ppm) even after 4 days. PH is at 6.2. Do you think I should wait until the ammonia level is down to 0 before re adding the shrimp? Thanks 👍🏻
Hi Mark, I keep cherry shrimp, badly they keep dieing, the only issue I see, is I have extremely soft water (Scotland), it comes out the tap and instantly changes with 1 drop kh water test (NT labs test kit), I have always put cuttle fish in my tank because I know the water is soft, but should I be try to get the KH up before even adding it to the tank after a water change?, if so how do I do this, I just have a small 19lt tank and am down to 10 shrimp again ,no breeding, I've had a few, tank fully cycled for about a year now, thankyou for any help you can give me.
I have my first red rili shrimp tank that the first shrimp went in on July 2. There are 14 shrimp and many are saddled, but none have berries yet. Water perimeters are fine. Is there anything I can do to get them breeding?
Hi mark .how much had the ph dropped from the time of starting that tank ? If my tank has still got a low ph but my shrimp have stopped breading would you still recommend changeing the soil . My shrimp were breeding well then jest stopped becoming berryed beginning of November as the temp in the uk started to drop. My water parameters are spot on and the tank is 7 months old . NO shrimp death's at all jest no breeding for over 5 weeks .should i be concerned?
look at the glass mate, if you see life on it like little snails, copepods, seed shrimp etc just give it time, If you see none of that I would change soil .
I see you have hornwort in the galaxy fishbone tank. That is very surprising as I've always had hornwort completely fall apart as soon as pH would go under 6.8.

Thanks!

Amazing video! Also I got AGAIN shrimps, but with vampire crabs in paludarium :) Wish you all the best!
I wrote down an idea today for a paldarium with my nepenthes , thanks for watching my friend👍
Nice tank setup! Good to see you getting back to good old Akadama soil and hopefully it'll work for you as good as before. Without its leaching ammonia, you can do it fast and skip a long cycle.
yeah as far as I can tell its not leeching any ammonia but I would imagine it does over time because it is still decaying soil.
Great video again Mark. This style of content is awesome when your just having fun with it

Looking good as always 👌
Thank you 😁
Nice video Mark. Answered some questions I had in my head about restarting/changing soil in soft water tanks 👍
not everyone will agree on the way I do things but I get no deaths so take from that what you will, Thanks for watching Mark.
@Marks Shrimp Tanks When I do give soft water shrimp a go I have a very elaborate plan in my head lol.
Great video and I enjoy with you go off on a tangent. 🙃
Oh thank you!
Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed
Hi Mark, can you test a dirted tank done the Father Fish way? I am very curious to find out if it will work for crs.
Don't listen to youtube, they are making all content look and sound the same. You do You. We like you. Take care, be well
I appreciate that thank you Gigi.

Don't worry, Mark is gonna do all this while u sit here complaining how hard life is
I second the opinion that harlequin shrimp breeding is a terrible idea, clearly the commenter hasn’t tried keeping them before.
Great video Mark ❤ thank you 🙏🏼
You are so welcome
Great set up Nice and simple gets the job done.🍀🦐🌿😎👍
Thanks 👍

What is the glass thing you put in the feeding dish in most the tanks? What does it do??
watch this it will explain all th-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/w-d-xo.html
I can't find the little peroxide reactors anywhere. What are they called, and where can I get them?
sotching oxydaters lots of places will have them
Hey Mark, there is also a sponge filter without air supply to buy, really quite. I use. Catching shrimp is like scratching a record😂. I was learning the fast way to clean and rebuild a good shrimp tank.
Hey Mark, what brand is that Zeolite?
is just maked hobby brand
Hi Mark what Zeoliet do you use?
Greetings from Holland
This was normal hobby branded zeolite.
what are some floating plants and normal plants you recommend for no plant expert?
salvinia is a great floater, jave moss and fern are to great plants, hornwort is also pretty goof for shrimp tanks.
@@MarksShrimpTanks alright, thanks for the help :)

Hey Mark what do you use as a black light blocker above the tanks?
Its a corrugated plastic sheet cut to size and spray painted black, its stuck on with magnets using superglue.
@@MarksShrimpTanks thanks
Thank you for the video. I've noticed in your previous videos your crystals would sit around 150tds? How come your now around 190tds? What pH would you recommend or is it better to focus on gh/kh/ph.
i have me 8 tanks around 200-250 they dont die and breed like crazy
Hi Mark, how many liters can you manage with just one double sponge filter?

50 60 liters probably is the max.
How often do you have to empty the tank and take out the flooring materials?
for best results you are talking 10 months to a year depending on the soil.
Can you use distilled water instead of RO water?
yes sir
@@MarksShrimpTanks I am planning on getting crystal black shrimp any tips?
As an Australian, I love this guy. Shame he can't speak english though...... Joking Mark!
gday, I was raised by dingos mate 😂
Excuseme sir. What's lamp to use tank?
but Mark, how long do i need to cycle the tank? even if there is old soil inside? 😁
remove the old soil all together, once the ph is lost its basically a dead soil with no kh and you run into problems.
What are the size of the tank?
50 liters
So you did cycle your tank? you just cycled for 5 days?
There is no amonia in that soil so your not waiting on any cycle, I was waiting on the ph to udjust I think if I didnt mention it in the video.
So this way we dont need to cycle 4-8 weeks if we have old filtration? And some stability... ?
you just need the tank to settle and then really watch your feeding.
@@MarksShrimpTanks are you shure its just 5-7 days? Maybe for akadama, but what about other soils?

Oh that’s tighter🤣 been in that situation a couple times💀🤣🥁
TDS close to 200? I get stressed when my tds goes over 150 and do water change. So closer to 200 is better?
I use conductivity not TDS .. My 200 conductivity would only be about 100 TDS if I had to measure it.
@@MarksShrimpTanks thanks for clarity. Love your channel. Greetings from South Africa
I have my first red rili shrimp tank that the first shrimp went in on July 2. There are 14 shrimp and many are saddled, but none have berries yet. Water perimeters are fine. Is there anything I can do to get them breeding?
Just give them time, if they are saddling up then you are doing the right things, one day you will look at the tank and see berried shrimp.
what plant was in your tank?
moss, subwassertangm bucep and i think a little java moss.

yes it does, seems to love nutrients too, if they start to get low it just melts to nothing.
Air Supply?! Alexa, play music by Air Supply!
I forgot if u already explained it but why u chose akademia instead amazonia v2 🤣🤣🤣
I use both, amazonia is more expensive thats all.
