    One day I was culling a bunch of shrimp to move to another tank and had left them in the breeder box while I made and ate supper. Came back the breeder box was empty. I think they climbed the sponge that was blocking the outflow. In my mind I could hear the Mission Impossible theme song playing during their clever escape. Talented escape artists!

    Hello Mark, What's your opinion on putting new soil on top of older aquasoil? For example, my shrimp tank is about 7 months old it has around a 100 crystal reds in there because i've sold like 70 last month. What i've done before is just pour in a jug of new aquasoil ontop of the existing layer and the shrimp never had any issues. The tank is 45L

    I know you're obviously very good at this and probably know already, but when I've used that substrate, there are ALWAYS baby shrimp hidden in it. I shut a tank down recently and pulled out every baby I could see. The next day, almost as many had come out of nowhere. Slightly less the following day. This went on for maybe 4-5 days. It's the only frustrating thing about rearranging and shutting down shrimp tanks. lol.
    Nice tanks by the way, I love coming across new channels and seeing what people keep and how they keep it. Great info too

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Strider, Yes I know about the baby shrimp hiding in the substrate, I normally start watching a tank and wait 2-3 weeks before changing it over, the bee shrimp I keep are around what 5-8mm after a few weeks from birth so even blind me can spot them. :)

    That’s so cool! I wish I had shrimp but they are so expensive around here and when i bought a few they all died in days for no reason ( parameters where fine )
    And now my guppies would probably bully them and if I still have moth catfish they would compete ( I bought them and haven’t seen them since, but my Ottos disappeared for ages and one day the only one I still have was just there )

    Hey Mark, you really made me consider going into shrimp breeding as well! Thanks a lot for infesting me with the shrimp virus :D... Currently I have two 30l cubes where I keep Caridina that just breed the way they want. I thought about buying myself 4 more 27l tanks for my IKEA Kallax (I can only breed shrimps in my living room and so it has to look decent). Could you perhaps make a video one day about how your lighting for your tanks is (which lights you use, Kelvin, perhaps linking them together or something like that)? That would be gorgeous! If you already have a video like that, I'm sorry. I only found your channel a couple of days ago and I have so much catching up to do. Thanks a lot :)

    Looks good Mark. I have loads of those breeder boxes that I used to use for guppies to drop fry in. Even with the exit flow peice with the smallest slats I would get new born guppy fry get through and end up getting ate in tank. Would love to be able to figure out a way to make those shrimp safe to do some super targeted breeding with just 1 male and a couple females, but hard to figure out a way to make it work without baby shrimp escaping or with water on floor by trying to shrimp proof exit flow. I tried something similar with a sponge like you and ended up with water on floor lol, so be careful.
    Resetting tanks is lots of work 😊👍

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you could use it just to get the girls berried up and then let them go again I suppose. the sponge I used had super large holes on it so I wasnt worried about overflows, I still dont know how the 3rd shrimp got out because the sponge hadnt moved and there is no gaps lol

    • @MarkShellyAquatics
      @MarkShellyAquatics ปีที่แล้ว

      @Marks Shrimp Tanks shrimp will find ways. Every time I clean sponge media out in my hang on back filters its pretty much guaranteed to have at least a shrimp or 2, the 20g blue tank I just had a video about a few days ago seriously used to have a colony of tiny shrimp living in the sponge, of course I picked out the ones I could, but many were 2 or 3 cell pours deep into the sponge lol.

    Hi , whats your recommended PH parameter for CRS or PRl ?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crystal red shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) are sensitive to changes in water chemistry and require specific water parameters in order to thrive. One of the most important parameters to consider is pH, which refers to the measure of the acidity or basicity of the water.
      For crystal red shrimp, it is generally recommended to maintain a pH level between 5.5 and 6.5 This range falls within the natural pH range for these shrimp, which is thought to be optimal for their health and well-being.
      It is important to monitor the pH levels in your shrimp tank regularly, as even small changes can have a significant impact on the shrimp's health. If the pH level falls outside of the recommended range, it is important to take steps to adjust it as needed to ensure that the shrimp are kept in a healthy and stable environment.
      It is also important to note that crystal red shrimp may be more sensitive to changes in pH than other species of shrimp, so it is especially important to be cautious when adjusting the pH in a tank that contains these shrimp.

    Literally what we did wrong I’m afraid. We redid our tank and added plants back right away and moved over the old filter and media bag and doses it with stability for a week or so. I was testing parameters and it all looked good BUT I didn’t test pH after a few days, only watching the nitrogen cycle. After 10ish days it looked like ammonia and nitrites were zero but nitrates were high and I assumed since i was Priming it daily that wouldn’t be a problem and the temp tank was a nuisance.
    So we moved our 10 shrimp and couple of ottos over and it looked ok, I was testing daily and they seemed happy for over a week (the nitrate remained high but I kept putting stability in and assuming the nitrifying bacteria would kick in soon) but then 2 shrimp died. Looked like molting issues, so I did a water change to get the nitrates down further but the next day 2 more died. *FINALLY* I tested Gh, KH and pH and pH was below 6 and Kh was basically zero. GH was over 10. I feel awful since it was so avoidable.
    Right now we are using Seachem Alkaline Buffer to get the KH above 2 or 3 daily but it dips as the day goes on. We added crushed coral and a wondershell which is slowly, slowly getting the KH up and the pH does vary throughout the day but is around 6.8 now.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  ปีที่แล้ว

      The video is for softwater bee shrimp with an active soil, I am aware of what your talking about and yes you will have issues with ph swings if you have no kH value in the water and you would also have issues with ammonia because it becomes toxic when percentages of ammonium are converted to ammonia around about 6.5ph level...thank you for this input, it helps me understand the issues people can have. 👍
