The Perfect Power System

- Cursed Techniques from JJK is one of the best power systems in modern shonen. The creativity of the actual powers and expression of that power isn't just limited there, but extends into how it interacts with the worldbuilding to give us a deeper look into who the characters are and what they represent in the story.
sukuna doing a binding vow to obliterate every life form in a 3000 mile radius at the expense of never using the quadratic formula again
Real (I love the quadratic formula)
if he cant use a quadratic formula he wont be able to use reverse cursed technique 🤔
Terrible deal honestly
I love the binding vows. Nothing like being able to min-max your very same ability and exploit them to do what is previously thought to be impossible.
Its so cool!
It's stolen from hxh
@@Joyboy553 nen vows are similar to binding vows yeah but gege has directly admitted to being inspired by hunterXhunter
hes admitted to that and theyre different enough to where you cant call it stealing
@be7256 what I'm saying is ypthat jjk isn't that unique on its own
@@Joyboy553 oh yeah the concept isnt revolutionary i just wouldnt call it stealing is all im sayin
I feel like Boogie Woogie is similar to Limitless: You can only use limitless effectively with the Six Eyes.. You can only Boogie Woogie effectively with a 10000000 IQ
I love the power system. Hot take, but I also think the binding vow system is very consistent if you look hard enough
If you cope hard enough
@@highlion8998 which one doesnt make sense?
@@cam10_0 todo sacraficing his already missing arm to be able to use a clapper instead, it makes all the previous deaths not as meaningful because they could have used that before death too, yuki specifically.
@@highlion8998 Todo didn’t sacrifice his missing arm, he changed the activation condition of his ct from a clap to a metal piece hitting a wooden box. It also pretty clearly specified that todo didn’t use it until yuta killed kenjaku, so I’m not sure how yuki dying relates to that. She raised her mass so high she became a black hole. I don’t think there was any change in activation condition that could’ve saved her life
@@cam10_0 she could have sacrificed her arm for a surprise attack. Also same for todo he used binding vow to changed activation condition it was clearly stated that boogie woogie is no more, why not change activation condition to snapping fingers instead of clapping than?
The best power systems always strongly connected characters with the plot/world around them which JJK does amazing. My all time favorites are (not ranking in any order):
Nen from HxH. Hisoka mentions how he can easily tell what kind of Nen people uses based on their personalities due to how deeply they're connected (though also because he's that perceptive when it comes to people due to his own usage). There's so much depth to its integration with character's view of the world and connection with themselves and their environment, it feels so real.
Fear, Contracts, and Blood from CSM: Power/Strength in this series tends to source from multiple sources. Devils are strengthened by being feared, while fearing what can end what they embody (with the exception of one primal fear devil ;3). Humans use their power either through contracts they make (which always comes at some cost), or by having the devils blood powering them (Like Denji/Katanaman having a devil heart, or fiends). Blood being a strong source of power makes Power's character so much more interesting as the blood devil as well with her role in the plot. sdjkngjkdnsdjg
Cursed Energy from JJK: Need I say more
Tao from Hells Paradise: That whole series is all about an exploration of it's power system which is the best thing about it! I think the series suffers from not having more space for emotion and other things to space out the power system's explanation but it's so grounded in ancient/modern sciences it almost makes it feel real
Chakra from Naruto: It's unfortunate that the internet doesn't dissect it more, but it's REALLY nuanced/complex with incorporating LOADs of things from Kundalini Yoga (the main system that talks about Chakra), and it's inclusion of Mudras (hand signs), Karmic inheritance (kekkei genkai), moon/emotional energy (gen jutsu), representations of Feminine and Masculine Energies (which is why gender stereotypes are more extreme in this show, basically feminine representing emotion and masculine being the "Will of fire"), and so forth. The more you know about Yogic sciences the more of Naruto that I've grown to appreciate. The show does a crappy job at explaining it to the audience though compared to the others on the list.
Breath from Demon Slayer: Before the field of Biology started, most things of life was understood and explained at from a foundation of elements (Chinese Medicine, Aristotle, Ayuverda, Astrology, etc) And demon slayer has been one of the shows i've seen that encompasses truths from those fields more than most other power systems that has elements at its basis- largely because it also includes Prana/Chi (energy/breath from yogic sciences) at its root, making it feel like the viewer can actually be the main character. There's also demon blood being a part of the world's power system as it impacts the physical body the breath is moving (or not moving) through (Not moving because if you have demon blood, I believe you're not able to use breathing technique in that world).
Honorable Mention: CHOUJIN from CHOUJIN X! It's only in Manga right now, but it's the Author of Tokyo Ghoul's current series. The basis of it's power system is the person's emotions and desire. And with the dark tones Sui Ishida brought it Tokyo Ghoul, I'm certain that's going to be one of the best anime Power Systems once it gets its anime adaption. We just got to let it cook.
I'm curious, which Power Systems are your favorite(s) outside of JJKs?
So much content I'm looking forward to you all diving in, will subscribe now!
Wholehearted agreement with this! I was excited to see Choujin X mentioned! My most anticipated manga adaptation and I love the concept of raising and sacrificing humanity to be more Choujin
Great list!
Mine (in no order): Nen, CE, Stands, Chakra and bending.
I think Nen will always be the best power system tbh
Nen's the template for sure 😂💯
I also want to point out that yutas technique is his love of others
Didn't expect such quality from a small channel. Short, straight to the point and interesting, nice. 👍

Honestly the power system is the reason Gojo v Sukuna was the peak of JJK in terms of fights. You really could feel both sides just pulling the power system to its absolute limits to try their hands at one-upping the other
I loved that battle a lot for that reason in specific
You have a point but that's not the soul. That's the "innate Domain" you were describing.
Gojo's innate domain is the "Infinite Void" which shows how empty he feels because of his isolation and loneliness. Sukuna's domain is "Malevolent Kitchen" which comes from his obsession with eating and cooking. Yuta's domain is "All-encompassing Unequivocal Love" which highlights his emotions toward Rika and his friends.
The Curse Techniques can be passed on to multiple generations. That's why you can't say Gojo's infinity, Sukuna's shrine, or Yuta's copy has something to do with their souls because other users had these techniques before. But you can say their innate domains have something to do with their personalities.
Kenjaku also said that the soul and body can coexist even separately. Kenjaku's CT and Mahito's CT are literally the mirror opposite of each other and still both are functional.
So yeah, it's not the soul, then the brain, and then the personality. It's about the innate domain.
And the innate domain is not necessarily the soul. It's the users' perception of it (basically, how they perceive their own souls). And then in their expansion, they give it a physical manifestation.
Also, JJK's power system is based on Hunter × Hunter and Bleach.
Aint no way bro said "Malevolent kitcheb" 😭🙏

Thank you so much for making this video!! This came up on my recommended - my younger brother has been hounding me to watch JJK lol😂 and I’ve just started the anime and didn’t really understand how the curses work - but your video helped me understand it so much better!! Great work! 😄👍
Glad I could help! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
we can’t forget nen, which cursed energy and binding vows were based on. nen is fucking awesome, you can have bungee gum (which has the properties of both rubber and gum) to simple buffs, to specialised weapons, to stand users, and you have nen vows. you can probably have devil fruit powers too, it's just great and I will glaze it until I die
I’d personally like a breakdown of all the charas’ techniques and how it relates to their character, but I’m a slut for analysis!!
I really like jjk power system, but to me, hxh still has the greatest power system
Gege when Sukuna makes a binding vow sacrificing his balls to one shot Yuji: 🤭
Gege when literally any fan favorite character exists: 😡
It's absolutely perfect if the series doesn't end with all these answered questions
A lot of people are saying Nen is a better power system. Now I haven't read HxH yet, but I do know that Gege based Jujutsu off Nen since hes a big fan of the series.
Binding vows are based of Nen contracts/restrictions, Shikigami are based of Nen beasts and so on and so forth. This explains why Jujutsu is such a great system that allows for so much self expression and characterization through abilities.
I'll defo say NEN still is the best system so far
Really engaging video & things to draw on in my own writing!
Great job all around!
Hell no, less consistent nen
Your videos are amazing
The first time I see a video on this, people keep down grade the verse because it's new, but the work behind the power make the advantage real for those characters, just because he takes the good from the best (Bleach, Naruto, HxH, Yuyu Hakusho, Dragon ball) to create a best one ...the reason I put dragon ball it's because of the binding concept, its remind men of the rage power, from rage or high emotion they transform...Binding vow is like those cheat code you like but you complain for each time because it's too unreal and powerful....no need to talk about domain expansion amd the other domains application in the verse...Gege did a great
Everyone basically agrees the only part that sucks is binding vows, but I have to say domain expansions have to be one of the coolest things an anime has thought of.
Even people whos never seen the show meme about domain expansions pretty much everywhere.
Why do you think binding vows suck? I'm not trying to insult or be confrontational, just curious about your reason.
@@konduit8536 At first they were cool like how nanami used them and I even liked the scene with miwas binding vow a bit. It was clear and made sense.
Nowadays binding vows only exist to retcon why a character survived, still has cursed energy, yada yada. It feels so random and poorly executed now.
Gege tried to copy nen vows but didnt pull it off nearly as well as togashi did.
@@isaiaholat3293 I see. You got a valid reason. The rest of the people with issues regarding vows were mad because of Sukuna specifically but you actually understand and aren't fixated on one thing. I'm glad.
@@isaiaholat3293all the binding vows so far have been balanced. The only abuse of binding vows imo is gojo and Sukuna spamming different conditions on the fly and changing domain functionality midway into the domain. But everything else has been fair. The reason Sukuna makes it look op is because he knows that self imposed binding vows aren’t that dangerous and if used right can allow you more temporary power in certain areas
@@tristanmargellos2919 Dawg sukuna spams it whenever hes about to lose and at one point it doesnt even say how he even made the vow. All we see is "to amend this, sukuna undertook a binding vow" and thats all.
This editing was fire! You deserve more subs! (I subbed too)
Still prefer nen, but the system in jjk is incredible too
Didn’t watch the video but I have to say gege himself said he had no idea how the cursed energy system worked and how to balance it
Video is about how it works narratively from a thematic perspective and how it ties perfectly into the character writing. Not about how perfect it is from a combat or technical perspective
Jjk power system is enspired by hunter c hunter which is why it’s so good
Lmao, he said that for 5 minute.
Nen>
World trigger has the best power system and actual tactics, strategies and battles with common sense. After that nen and hxh gets the deserved second place. Jojo maybe third?
The issue are sukunas binding vows:
If i dont eat spinach while clenching my butt cheeks next tuesday then ill get an anti hollow purple technique i havnt used since the heian era
Me when sukuna uses a binding vow that stops him from eating milkshakes (he loves milkshakes)
@@BeyondMediaAnalysis1 LMAO
Except that all of his vows make sense and work within what's established. Enchain gave him full control for a minute so long as he doesn't harm anyone and also made Yuji forget he made the vow. His domain and Divine Flame make sense as well since sacrificing a sealed barrier for more range makes it possible but not likely for your oppenent to survive by escape. Exchanging the ability to use the flames whenever and on as many people as desired for the ability to only use it after Cleave and Dismantle as well as only using it on one person outside the domain, with multi-targeting being domain exclusive, also works because those conditions must be observed if Sukuna wants the flames to have speed and more effective range. This is all explained in the manga. The 258 domain is restricted by the 99 second time limit but the output and range are higher because of it if I'm not mistaken. The vows that are problematic are the ones with little to explanation on their exchanges like Todo's vows for Boogie Woogie or Yuji's Soul Dismantle.
@@konduit8536even todo like where is the problem clapping and slapping are similar enough since especially by worth claps had more creative play potential while vibra slap just brute forces.
"It's absolutely perfect" It's just bleach.
I don't believe it's the perfect power system. I still feel like others such as Nen have far more depth and more interesting ideas that can be played with. Such as how Kurapica managed to become a Conjurer despite being an Enhancer. The idea of a sorcerer's ability reflecting their personality is not entirely revolutionary, and I think Jojo did it best with Stands.
I'm not saying Cursed Energy as a power system is bad, but I feel like there is much it can improve on. I think it would be better if the power system focused more on emotions, such as the energy that positive emotions can produce.
My idea is that positive emotions can produce a warm energy that can be used as a defensive tool, empowering one's strength, dexterity, and durability. But, if the user knows how to properly project the energy, they can use this as a supportive effect for allies. There are also negative emotions that can be used to cripple and damage enemies. However, keeping negative energy in the body is harmful and can slowly destroy the user's body if they do not project the energy. Reflecting real life with how positive and negative emotions actually have an impact on our health. But, it is also a great way to show someone's character such as how someone who excels at positive energy is shown to be a very positive or supportive person.
Would inherited techniques still be representations of the soul if they are passed down within a bloodline
my brain flat lined half way ..... so they cool powers?

Cursed energy has nothing on Nen, nen us the best power system in all media

However it seems you can’t make a binding vow to get strong like that… Gojo did say a sorcerers power is 80% innate talent…
Bummer
There are a lot of asspuls in jjk, not to mention binding vows. "Perfect" is a very strong undeserved term.
Binding vows were good but are now used as a plot to convince
Cursed techniques are basically rng if you get a shit one no matter how hard you train you'll never reach special Grade
It's a 6 out of 10 power system just a weaker version of nen power system

JJK is a hit manga in the sense that everyone who likes it wants to Hit the fucking author with a car for the ending
I understood Calculus far easier than this power system.
I don't understand algebra and I Could solve most of the questions asked about this system, If you want me to explain anything about it then feel free to ask me
listen when everyone says binding vows are BS, they mean Sukuna somehow cutting Gojo without doing the incantation or the hand sign, a binding vow we genuinely have no idea what its sacrifice was , however when binding vows are done in a way like nanami or Todo , they are genuinely good, as in we are holding this thing back to have this thing be better, a simple yet fair system
His binding vow was that he could use his World Cutting Slash once instantly in exchange for having to do both the handsigns and incantations every time he wanted to do it again. Sukuna throwing that without the binding vow would result in Gojo's six eyes detecting it and dodging it. I assume he came to that conclusion when a slice only cut off Gojo's arm.
Please read the actual manga and not the leaks. Sukuna's vow made the WCS be usable one time without using enmaten, and in exchange for that, he then had to always do chants and aim the slash which is essentially telegraphing it on top of doing the original enmaten handsign.
When Mahito changed Mechamaru's soul to cure him shouldn't his cursed technique had changed slightly or put him off balance or something?
i dont agree but good video!
Ye
Just second to Hunter x Hunter.
But this theory falls apart for geto. Why does he have curse manipulation? Did he always want to manipulate people or with the guy who has got luck
We actually have a whole dedicated video on geto coming out soon and part of it is how
His technique plays into his character
Dawg this power system is perfect BESIDES SUKUNA, honestly there should be a different term for binding vows because todo using a vibra slap to do buggie wuggie is a change in conditions rather than an exchange and should have a different name
Sorry if they can't choose their techniques it's not worth it.
Wouldn't say its perfect specifically because of some characters ability to abuse binding vows but it's damn near perfect
I put it on the Same level as HXH nen
Everybody bitches and moans about binding vows, and that’s fine I guess, Gege got a bit loose later in the series with them, but the bone I want to pick it the interpretation thing.
A person’s CT is only limited to their interpretation for the application of it right, so what’s stopping someone from interpretation past its limitations? Why doesn’t Hakari “ interpret” Jackpot past 4 min, 11 secs, or Yuta “ interpret” mimicry past 5 mins? Idk limitations seem kinda vague when it’s potentially so arbitrary to me
Cursed energy is redundant/ big missed potential, my explanation:
Negative-Emotion fueled energy
Unfortunately functionally even tho there are implications of the energy not being neutral and may have its own "will" the series uses it as typical fuel like any other shonen it's not functionally different from chakra
Now the redundancy, sukuna is "evil/negative" the series uses the demon inside power trope but cursed energy itself is built fundamentally to have negativity where as the energy itself could have been it's own "sukuna" but for everyone that uses it BIG missed opportunity gege could have built on the demon inside trope totally differently
Binding vows are decent BUT is misused later on and wekean tension because the way its later used is payoff BEFORE set up which makes the resolutions feel cheaper..
I agree the negativity thing seems to have been swept under the rug, like imagine if sukuna couldn't learn RCT because he has no positivity and shoko could have had only RCT because of being too positive or something, but apparently it's just skill
It is a perfect System but my only Gripe with it is its too simple (Excluding BV) for its own good. It could add a little more fantastical Aspect.
Personally i still think hxh's nen is the best power system
binding vows are just insanely inconsistent
In what way?
@@konduit8536 like idk if it's just me but they feel really random and like js an in universe excuse for plot armor

Kyoto Students:
I hate binding vows. They're cheap nen vows 😩😵💫. Gege could've written jjk without them and wrote bigger for Sukuna. I think I only appreciate the enchain binding vow because the cost was Sukuna not being able to takeover for yuji's life. The others suck with cheap stakes.
its not the perfect power system but its somewhat close. the rules arent explained well enough compared to nen. for example, divergent fist is effectively a cursed energy punch with a double impact do to the lag. just take a regular cursed energy punch, theres no rules that involve the distribution of cursed energy. while with nen, if you focus more of your nen into a punch (like a ja-janken rock) you lose nen in the rest of your body losing defence but gaining incredible power in the punch. with nen, theres no rule like that, which makes no sense since it shouldnt be how energy distribution works
It's a joke, Gege made new rules out of nothing and broke rule after rule in recent arcs even in the mid-tier sorcerers fights(of course by plot those were top-tier geniuses, but come on). Unlike nen, JJK system isn`t complex fully written system, it pretends to be one

After reading about 100 chapters of JJK, I can say I care less about the power system. Cursed technique bla bla bla.
