- Rose McGowan, Hollywood actress and activist, talks to Masarat Daud about her life experiences, the problem with Hollywood as a system and how we need to be brave.
Movements like TimesUp and MeToo have given a vocabulary for sexual abuse survivors to tell their stories. But what are the systems that enable these problems that go uncovered for so long? Rose McGowan, whose allegations against Harvey Weinstein unleashed the TimesUp movement in Hollywood, also later contributed to building the MeToo movement where sexual survivors found a platform to tell their stories.
This was recorded in Oslo, Norway on November 27, 2018.
The Xynteo Starter is a social gathering - which serves as a pre-event to this year’s Xynteo Exchange/Norway - where we celebrate the role of arts and culture in challenging the growth model we need in the 21st century. Now, more than ever, we need those from arts and culture to help us break out of business-as-usual thinking.
She hit the nail on the head when she said that being an outsider lets you see the system for what it is.
If anyone ever wanted an explanation about what happened to Britney Spears...this is it. Rose said it all, you don't talk, you do what you're told or your punished. Every time Britney stepped out of line (55 hour marriage) (sneaking away to a radio station where they played Mona Lisa) and they refused to let her release original doll. After that they likely paid all those paparazzi to drive her crazy and that created the perfect storm for them to "reform her" I wish Britney was not neglected in this issue because Hollywood is evil in all kinds of different ways.
Is so refreshing and beautiful, to listen and see a person that is real, authentic, someone with courage who honours truth and in sharing her life, her work and activism creates waves of inspiration for a better understanding of what should and could never be justified or pass as " normal" . I have tremendous respect for Rose Mc Gowan, for raising her voice for those and herself, who had been the subject of abuse, as for years the very conversation of this issue was almost " taboo" or a known " secret" the more we know, the more we stopped conforming about the normalisation of abuse, not only against women, but also against any human, to bring forth the conversation the better chances we all can have, a society that treats individuals, as human beings, worth of respect, appreciation and not a tolerant and protective society of perpetrators regardless of their social status, power and influence.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful conversation.
"What would impress me?
It would impress me if people were stronger.
It would impress me if people weren't complicit.
It would impress me if people fought harder for others that can't fight for themselves." 🙏💕
Thank you for sharing your truth Rose 🌹
If being an actor wasn’t her calling, being a writer surely is. She has a lot to say.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY, ROSE.......I BOUGHT YOUR STORY (YOUR BOOK).I CAN'T WAIT TO RECEIVE THE BOOK SO I CAN READ. IM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO READING IT.
I like Rose thank god we have women like her.
I thing you are amazing ROSE thank you so much🇫🇷🌎🦋
I love how the greatest interviews with Rose McGowan are ones that don't take place on corporate--beast media.
We don't need them, they need us.
And we need to shut them down.
She's so wellspoken.
I've been aware of certain systems from a young age, watching movies where the first 'dispensible' characters killed are 1. Black 2. Heavier in build. The programming is within our education systems and our language, and our religions. By not being aware, we ourselves unconsciously become homogeneous with the system and never see things (or ourselves) for what they/we really are. Even the word (for example) "invalid" which is a fusion of the two words "in" +"valid" tells the story of a reality which says that a physically challenged person has no right to exist. It is a radical thing to begin to see what we really are, and layers of programmes need to be seen and erased. Thank God for Rose, who is beginning to bring this awareness to the mainstream.
Wonderful keynote
Rose is awesome!
You are very stronger and amazing women rose McGowan keep ☺
Awesome Rose and very deep and fair thoughts. A light to the world of darkness. Just do it anyway.
..what a masonic web we weave ....
I agree wholeheartedly and also kind of feel that Rose could end up being a powerful cult leader… the good kind of course. If that exists
You are not liked if you are intelligent and think for yourself even family don't like it thanks to Rose McGowan and Sinead oconnor
Sinead O'Connor? Why mention her (I love her btw) just wondering
I like Rose points, but I'd love to see her do these kinds of interviews in Muslim country and in Jewish, Africa, places where people live deeper forms of oppression. It's nice to live in a country where you can speak her mind. I would be more proud if she made it a world thing not just a North America and first World effort.
Hm
She could have been as successful as Angelina Jolie!
RajaMCool Ask yourself why A.J. is successful;)
Rose IS successful IF you support her work!!! Personally I LOVE all of her films!!!
