For those of you who don’t know, anything on the runway that can be sucked up by the engines and possibly cause a turbine explosion on a jet aircraft. This is why all objects must be reported. Even a cat.

Though seriously the pilot was right to report it, large birds getting sucked into a engine can cause serious damage. That's what caused the miracle landing on the Hudson.

I remember watching a video where a lone ATC had a stroke and she couldn't continue so the pilots on the ground took virtual control of the airport for a second. It was actually impressive.

I’ve spoken to tower while I was meant to be on Approach and Vice versa so I know about a good roasting unfortunately lol.
Doesn't matter what job you are in. I have had it happen in retail, theater production and game industry work and it seems to be a universal concept that if you catch the wrong channel or don't mute when you are supposed to, you will get roasted by all who hear

It's hard to remember now but I seem to recall something to the effect "unofficial radio use in controlled airspace is illegal." But it's been 25 years since I was in flight school. Gosh, to think we "enjoyed our lives" without smartphones or the internet!

My guess is that the ATC who asked for the diamond bracelet message to be repeated understood it quite well the first time. He just wanted to put it on speakers for everyone in the room to hear it, as there seemed to be a lot of laughter in the background on his next transmission when he told them the gate xD

Why has a comedian not gotten a hold of this?
My father was a commercial helicopter pilot after flying for the US ARMY, so as a kid I hung out at airports all the time. My mom ran the airport coffee shop near where we lived, which had speakers piping in the tower radio. Hearing this ‘language’ and commands and interactions brings a big smile to my face as I remember the good old days (70’s).

I feel bad for the air traffic controllers. The amount of stress they have to deal with coordinating all those planes with hundreds of people in them must be tremendous.
The ATC egging the other pilot to pile on top and mock the pilot who broad casted his announcement was the best

@@bogdan_n actually 2:00 AM is a typical time slot for westbound flights to land in East Asian countries in the early afternoon so that that passengers can make connecting flights in the late afternoon/evening. Also to make early morning arrivals to West coast cities like LA. So JFK can be pretty Departure heavy around that time

It doesn't happen often (out of basic protocol to avoid unnecessary talk on the air), but the funniest moments are when other pilots chime in after a funny radio exchange.
Super clear cleared to land message, reply is “this is JFK right?” I can see why they had to double check

The 'important cargo' one was sweet
Decades ago, United pilots could allow passengers to listen to ATC as one of the entertainment channels. Half dozing on a redeye flight I heard this - "I'm not lexdyxsic." "Well, 10 out of nine people have that problem." plus a few other quips I don't remember. Always assumed there was an earlier pilot who got his call sign mixed-up.
I did the same thing; I had such a great time listening to the jargon.
I used to love listening to the ATC channel!! I miss that!
Former Navy aviator Carrol LeFon (RIP) once got his patches on backwards, and someone asked him if he was dyslexic. After that his call sign was LEX.
Also decades ago, when I was a child, the flight attendant came up to me and asked if I'd like to see the cockpit and meet the captain. She took me there (with my parents' consent), I met the captain and copilot, and he let me sit in the captain's chair and hold the yoke (it was obviously on autopilot). He said, "There, now you're flying the plane!"

Some ACT can be a intimidating. I remember flying into JFK as a young rookie pilot for BA. They don't take any prisoners, that's for sure. Best advice I got was my cap telling me to always talk in my best queens english. 20 yrs later I still do it lol!!!!

@@davidthieroff9452 probably fat, drunk, and very happy with his life choices. Also, Wiarton is around 90 miles as the bird flies (really about 118 via road) from Toronto-Pearson Int'l. Handhelds have about 25 mile range. Something tells me he wasn't using a handheld alone, probably had some kind of long range transmitter that his handheld was piggybacking off of. Either that or the little transmitter in that handheld was overdriven to all fuck.

US ATC: Hyper & Agressive
UK ATC: Calm & Distinct
Not really “hyper” or “aggressive” more like a lot more busy and a lot less patience because the airspace is so busy. I don’t really blame them when pilots do really stupid things however like the aero float racing off the runway at tortoise speeds or the Cessna being so incredibly in over his head he sends a frontier bus around. If you’re gonna come to a place like JFK you gotta be on your toes. You got 3 major airports/airspace’s all next to each other with tons of traffic. I can understand their sense of urgency and the speed that they must control at.

The rude ATC was Kennedy JACK he has been fired 2 years ago because of the reports made by different pilots about his rudeness, JACK’S replacement is a woman she’s calm and polite. Kennedy STEVE was the easygoing funny ATC at JFK but he retired due to age. Kennedy RALPH is super nice and patient, extremely professional he is the ATC who was in contact with Captain Sullenberger during the “Miracle on the Houdson”

I was in flight training at Hondo Air Base, Texas.in 1955. The senior class was still using the old yellow T-6. One of their jokers would hold his hand mic out of the cockpit and would make really loud whirring noise that would rip the eardrums of the tower operators ,and he'd say," This is the Batman on downwind ." There were several planes on entry so they never could catch the culprit. One tower operator got the idea to play his game to catch him.. So, one day he answered, "Roger, Batman, this is Superman in the tower. If you read me, wiggle your wings for positive ID." And this was his answer:
"Roger, this is Batman. If you read me , Superman, wiggle the tower!

True, although in all seriousness couldn't a large owl do some damage if it got sucked into an engine?
@@Salicat99 typically engines can take small birds between 2-5 lbs without any issues. I’d think a large owl may be in the 4-5 lb range. It’s possible that the owl could cause engine damage, but with it being single and probably not that big a plane crash is probably unlikely. Typically bird flocks are what are terrifying because you are almost certainly going to get birds sucked in.
@@dex6316 That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the reply. Near Pearson Airport there is a Wendy's that has an outdoor field where people can sit to watch the planes land on one of the runways. I remember there was a falconer there who would keep the seagulls away (as of course they would be super attracted to the waste from the fast food joint). That was why I asked.
I think my favorites are the ones where the pilot does the passenger briefing over the radio instead of the cabin.
