I'm very new to XFEM so I don't know if this is right, but I think what they do at 6:33 with the general solution controls should circumvent that issue unless it's getting way out of hand.

the simulation is not converging for me. I did exact settings like yours.
I had a similar problem. The problem was solved by setting "Damage Stabilization Cohesive" menu. for example Viscosity Coefficient=0.00001
I am getting error of ***ERROR :too many attempts made for this increment. Please help me how to resolve it.
