Why does everyone give Scrooge such a bad rap? He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world. Why don't people remember him for that?
What is often not mentioned is that the mind needs to be healed to be strong enough at the moment of death.
I always saw it as if hell was something like the absence of God. You're deprived from the beatific vision (our ultimate goal on life), and if this wasn't miserable enough there are also demons there who were too fallen from Heaven. So (at least in my point of view) God doesn't actively punish, but being by your own without His help and protection lets one vulnerable to any sorts of punishment and torture from evil spirits for all eternity, with no solace.
CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: The Church prays that no one shall be lost: “Lord, let me never be parted from you.” If it is true that no one can save himself, it is also true that God “desires all men to be saved” (1Tim 2:4), and that for him “all things are possible” (Mt 19:26).
Jesus describes hell as place of "fire" where there will be "weeping and gnashing of teeth." Some Saints have visions of hell as a horrible place of torture and darkness and where souls have to share a prison with the demons and Satan.
I think hell is horrible enough if we finally realize the ultimate infinite joy that we miss by not being able to be in heaven, that could describe the pain and suffering of hell for left-out souls because of their choice for evil or not wanting God. However, we cannot forget the presence of the evil one and its demons who will be thrown into hell as well, either into a separate hell or together with sinful human souls, but Saints had visions of sinful souls and demons together in hell. We know how horrible it is to be possessed or oppressed by demons on earth, as written in the Gospel or as we can witness from testimonies of exorcists and those who have been liberated. Imagine if you have to live together with demons in hell, because the Saints live together with holy Angels in heaven.
Accept Jesus Christ and follow the Church and love God will all your heart, soul, mind, and strength from now on.

So how do I allow God to save me?
Humbleness and acception of our own incapacity to save ourselves. When we sincerely repent from our faults and ask God for forgiveness with right intent to keep on the good path, we can be sure of His mercy and love.
I'm working on it, still trying "not to get in the way" of the Grace of the Holy Spirit that, I know, wants to act upon me (and everyone)

What about those, even in the Catholic Church who hold to some form of "double predestination", where is there choice in that, and doesn't that indeed show that God wants, not just some, but many in Hell?

Simple, hell is a lie told to gullible people to keep them in line.
Yes! Do as I say and I'll reward you with heaven. Disobey me, and you're off to hell.
Yet the scheme only works if the plebs are credulous enough to believe it.
Easy to say about HELL. But nothing is mentioned WHERE is the hell that they are talking about? Believe only to those who know where HELL is located. HELL will be created in the last day for the final judgment for eternal death of the soul. In the Bible, only Gehenna & Tartarus are existing for the punishment of our sin when we die. With God’s grace you may be send to paradise if you are faithful and righteous. No one ascended in heaven except the one that comes from the same place. Test the spirit if they are the true wisdom.
