    Hi Lily! What do you think about food that we process ourselves, like nut milks or "lentil loaf." I have made both of those things and enjoyed them. Would you say they are just as bad as processed food that we purchase? Considering I cooked/blended/mixed/filtered these things? I would love to know your opinion. Thanks!

    This is such an important video!!! People hear carbs and think "no, those are bad, it's a fact," and that's so inaccurate. My own mother says "others might be able to eat carbs, but I can't. Carbs hurt my weight, health and energy," but it's because she's eating a predominantly animal based diet full of processed foods, sugars and only drinks soda, plus she's under the impression that everyone is different when it comes to dietary needs. Everyone needs to see this video because there's a HUGE difference between good and bad carbs and until people understand that they'll just keep blaming their problems on the wrong thing. #teamlilykoi #carbsarelife #literally

    I am SURROUNDED by diabetics at work. They seem to think of themselves as experts on carbs for some reason, and want to criticize my food. I can sit down to eat a couple bananas on my break and get mobbed by people telling me I shouldn’t eat them, they are high carb, and there is way too much sugar in them. I get told that bananas are poison! The people telling me this live on overly processed foods, tons of dairy, tons of eggs and bacon, and Twinkies and donuts!!!! Twinkies and donuts??? I seriously can’t listen to people who are diabetic, eat Twinkies, and accuse me of eating poison when I eat a couple bananas! It happens constantly though. Ever since going vegan, I have people with the poorest diets on the planet, attacking me for my whole food plant based diet. It is literally the weirdest thing I have to experience.

Here is the ingredient list: Sprouted Organic Whole Wheat Berries, Filtered Water, Wheat Gluten, Organic Dates, Cultured Wheat, Sea Salt, Organic Raisins, Fresh Yeast, Sunflower Lecithin. Not even for super high intensity/duration exercise? Like if I'm about to do a 5k race and I don't want to have stuff digesting in my stomach but need the carbs, or if I'm in the middle of a 100 mile bike ride and can't afford to bonk, are these not decent enough scenarios to justify refined sugar? I know these are fringe cases, but they _are_ cases nonetheless

    • @lilykoihawaii

      I did mention later in the video that I do still include processed carbs in my diet from time to time - including sugars - but it won't be helpful to have them all the time. In the situations you mention, do what you need to do to get yourself through the exercise, If that's what you're choosing to do. There are also options like dates which are very high in available sugars yet still, technically, a WPF. Your call!

    How often do you eat "bad" carbs (sweets)? I'm a perfectionist and this tends to lead to extremes in my eating behaviours... especially because I still struggle with binge eating... I don't want to eat these foods anymore but I'm still addicted... and don't know if I should allow them on special occasions like if somebody invites me for dinner or in holidays... don't know what's the best 🙈

    • @lilykoihawaii
      @lilykoihawaii  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to be very much the same... I either ate nothing or TONS of the bad foods. I found working on the emotional reasons I felt so overwhelmed by food choices (feeling like I was "ruining everything" by eating a treat, being scared I'd lose control, thinking I'd weigh more or have breakouts the next day, etc) helped a lot more than trying to further manage what I was allowed to eat and when. 1.) I crave sweets only when I'm not letting myself eat until I'm full of whole plant foods, 2.) if I live in a world where I'm "not allowed" to eat vegan ice cream, I crave vegan ice cream and get obsessive... If I'm allowed to have vegan ice cream when I genuinely want it, I then feel a lot less emotionally charged about the choice. It's hard to answer your question exactly... it's anywhere from once a month to once a week... and I've become one of those annoying people that can eat a couple bites of sweets and be done... 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Well, there are some vegans I know of who choose to eat the peel, and yes, many primates don't discriminate... I personally wouldn't enjoy that. So I suppose I personally consider Whole Foods to constitute the whole EDIBLE portion... at least what's traditionally considered edible by our species...

    Is white rice (basmati) bad to have everyday? It's my favourite and it's not that calorically dense but it could be less than ideal

    • @lilykoihawaii
      @lilykoihawaii  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it is less than ideal. I love white rice, too and we have it once a week or so. There are also the issues of the potential arsenic levels in rice, which Dr. Greger has made several videos about if you haven't seen them, so it's wise to vary the grains you're eating anyway. Maybe you can see how it feels to mix it up over the next few weeks?

    I love fruit but that you cannot overdose on fruit is not true. I eat very healthy and vegan and if i eat more then 1kg of fruit a day (too much for me) it can get a gout attack! Symptoms are worse if i eat high oxalate foods around the same time (tofu, beans, almonds etc) So it's not just the refined sugar, cookies etc.. but also intake of fresh fruits matter, unfortunately. :(

    I've tried a very high carb, vegan diet and I felt awful. My body couldn't handle all the carbs, I gained weight, was bloated all the time, and my skin and hair was awful. I lasted 4 months before I switched to a vegetarian low carb, high fat diet. Upon switching, the weight melted off, my skin was much clearer than it had been in years, and my hair stopped falling out. I wish I could switch to a vegan high fat diet, but it is very expensive and limiting. It's not 100% feasible at the moment, though I do try to have vegan days :/I think blanket statements that carbs are good, or carbs are bad is a dangerous thing to say (not that you have, this is just a general statement) because everyone reacts differently. I would love to digest carbs normally! It would be so easy & cheap to incorporate more fruits, starchy veggies, posts & pasta into my diet more often!

      Lush I think you should watch her full weight loss series as she explains in full details about fat intake, weight gain on a vegan diet, ketogenic diets etc.
      Ketogenic diets/high fat diets that make you go into ketosis actually make you lose weight so fast by making your body sick. It's extremely dangerous! Lilykoi also pointed out in her "gut" Videos how a high fat diet is highly associated with the membranes in your stomach and intestines becoming semi-permeable, which is extremely dangerous and hard on your kidneys and skin

    • @laurastacey683
      @laurastacey683 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Lush If this is true, see a doctor. If your body can't handle fruits and vegetables, there's something seriously wrong with you, and I say that with concern, not derision. Unless a significant amount of the carbs you were eating were processed, there's no reason they would give you all those symptoms, unless one of your internal systems isn't functioning quite right.

    • @shelbielynne9609
      @shelbielynne9609 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We are high carb creatures, so if you can't thrive on that way of eating there's something going on. Yes, when switching to HCLF veganism or veganism in general you will most likely see things get worse before they get better because your body needs to heal all of the horrific damage that you've done to it, and that's not a pretty stage. But if you stuck it out you'd have seen the weight come off, skin clear up and health improve. It's a fact. Nothing gets better overnight. And you don't even have to do HCLF, just being a healthy vegan eating whole plant foods will drastically improve all factors of health.

    Just remember there is no such thing as "good" or "bad" its just that there are only certain amounts that, health wise, we have to consume in smaller portions. The one's we have to consume in smaller portions are what people label as "bad" because you can't have much of it and it can be addicting, like the donuts. Either way, there's only a certain amount you should consume of everything! That being said, you can live without eating donuts whereas your health will truly suffer if you live without fruits and vegetables.

      I disagree. You can eat as many fruits and veggies as you want and be fine (thriving actually) but you can't eat as many processed foods as you want and thrive or even be close to fine. If you have to eat small portions of something to be okay, the food in question is bad. Is one standard donut going to kill you? No, but that doesn't make it any less of a bad food.

      Well, coming from someone who went to school for nutrition, you're wrong. Research (Go check out some free pubmed articles) says otherwise. Caloric intake is the first thing to pay attention to. You absolutely CAN gain weight if you overeat fruits, vegetables, anything. Its just harder to do. Check out some raw vegans, there are a few who talk about how they gained weight from eating just plant-based.

      I agree with you on this. The thing is that it does not really matter how you call non optimal foods, we all know donuts are not a great source for anything and there are always better alternatives. BUT it can really f* you up if you try to eat clean all the time and become dogmatic. I have this behind me and it messed with me pretty badly. The world does not end if you eat a donut every now and then. It does not destroy you. This does not mean you should live from donuts. The dose makes the poison. Everybody has to see for themselves but it did not help me to label foods as "bad" and "harmful", it made me want them and then not enjoy them. I can deal better with being allowed to eat non ideal foods while being fully aware that there are many much better and more nutritious alternatives. Then I can make conscious decisions pro health instead of feeling restricted. Almost every food has been demonized until today and I think the demonizing itself is a much bigger issue than the food itself because panic/anxiety related to food and taking good care of yourself don't go together well. Suddenly you end up unable to eat anything anymore because everything has disadvantages.

      Exactly the point I was trying to make! You said that all very well and made other great points :)
