Louis Gossett Jr.'s performance as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
"An officer and a gentleman" is a classic phrase to describe how men who are commissioned are supposed to conduct themselves. The idea is that they have the responsibility to not just be an officer but also a gentleman. You can get a more detailed rundown of the idea behind the phrase by doing an online search of the "US Naval Institute" with "Officer and a Gentleman."
It is a theme throughout the movie. Zack is neither an officer and a gentleman at the beginning of the movie. He is all for himself and his selfish needs. He uses women for his gratification not willing to have a commitment. He doesn't care about his classmates other than Worley. Paula's dad became an officer, but he walked away from her pregnant mother (an officer but not a gentleman). Worley quit OCS and tried to marry his girlfriend whom he thought was pregnant (A gentleman but not an officer).
First saw this in the theater when I was maybe 13 - first time my parents took me to an R-rated movie. Fair to say it broadened my horizons a fair bit. Lotta good moments, but Zack going back and making sure Seeger got herself over that wall will always be one of my favorite scenes in any movie.
Re: difficulties you'd have dealing with any form of boot camp, understand the degree of anger or whatever negative emotion you have towards the drill is dwarfed by how you'd feel towards someone shooting at you trying to kill you, and if you can't hack being yelled at, you certainly can't hack being shot at--at least not without risking the lives of everyone around you. Drill instructors are there to get you to break, because (as a former TAC Officer, basically a drill sergeant for officers) we'd rather have you break dealing with us than break in combat. Never feel sorry for people being smoked by Drill instructors. We do it because we love our soldiers.
BTW, I went to flight school in the Army. 50% of single soldiers entering flight school will leave married or engaged. It's not a "wasn't this a thing." It's still a thing.
Fun trivia: the guy singing "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Aroind the Old Oak Tree" is country music legend Dwight Yoakum.
This movie was a massive hit in 1982!

Sorry for two comments, but brilliant recognition of why Zach is such a loner. it's also worth noting, this movie was a driving force in me joining the Army and going to flight school.

Even though it was seven years after Vietnam, there was still a very strong anti military sentiment in the country. Vets, like me, were denied jobs and there were other forms of discrimination as well. On a city bus, I heard a mother tell her teen daughter that she was better off with a guy fresh out of prison instead of a veteran.
The guy that panics and almost drowns in the dunk tank is played by the star of NYPD Blue and CSI: Miami, David Caruso.
Seeger is played by the same actress that plays Axel Foley's friend Jenny Summers in the orginal Beverly Hills Cop.
My mom's favorite movie...
One of my mom's favorites as well, we bought it on VHS when it first released, back when new tapes cost $70-$90, you really had to love the movie to spend that much back then.
1. Too bad this didn't get the love it deserved.
2. I've seen those two girls that ask young Zach what ship he's from.
3. The US Navy did not give backing to this film.
4. Richard Gere and Debra Winger couldn't stand each other.
5. The Producer didn't want Winger because he wanted someone "more
bangable" (he used a different word).
6. Lisa Eilbacher was very athletic and really had to work hard not to be while playing Seeger.
7. BTW as a sailor who had to "endure" Hawaii for 3 1/2 years and I can tell you Lynette doesn't want to go there. My time there was 3 years 5 months too long. Not an 808 fan.

Despite the less than flattering picture of the Navy that the early PI flashback scenes with Mayo's father portrayed, this movie gave a huge recruiting boost to the Navy, so they learned and fully got on board when Top Gun was being made.

It is a credit to Winger's and Gere's talent and professionalism that they could do a convincing job of acting like they were in love even though they really despised each other.

Try Flyboys, with James Franco and Jean Reno. WW1 period piece about the American pilots that flew for France.
Well said.🙂 Because I am a history buff I appreciate a movie that accurately tells a story. Flyboys is so on message, however, comma, because it didn't resort to any tropes, it's not exciting, unless you're a history buff, like me.

Great selection! It wasn't meant to be a risqué movie when it came out, but it was, lol. I remember this getting a lot of 'concern' from viewers and critics as the love-making scenes depicted looked way too real (for the time) and could not have been simulated.

He is not being a baby, everyone he has actually loved has committed suicide and he blames himself. If he is acting out of hate it is hate for himself because everyone dies around him. Stop, beating up on this troubled young man, his life has been hell. Wrong, again, he isn't doing it because he has nothing else, he is doing it to prove to the world that he can make and mostly to himself.
The word back in the day was they hated each other on set and any on screen chemistry was painfully contrived.

@@laurashawnlee Yeah I find that amazing if true because I think both leads are smoking hot and seem to have a real romantic chemistry on screen.
Well, cinema is make-believe, after all. Maybe other parts of the film were "painfully contrived".
