The fencing scene was the very last thing filmed, as Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) and Cary Elwes (Wesley) had to spend several weeks in between other scenes perfecting their swordplay. Except for the gymnastic flip, every shot of them fighting is the actual actors. Incidentally, when they reel off a list of techniques that they're using to fight, these are all real swordfighting moves created/described by the real named historical experts. A pleasure to watch along as always, Biss!

The book this movie came from was published in the 1970s. I read it around the time the movie came out, and saw the movie after I read it. I remember being surprised at just how closely the movie followed the book. It's a great book. I don't think I have ever read any other book as quickly. The author has won a couple of writing oscars for other movies.

Robin Write (Buttercup) tells a really wholesome story about Andre the Giant. She says the crew went horseback riding when they had a break from filming, and got caught in freezing rain on the way back. She says Andre looked over and saw her shivering, and he rested his enormous hand on her head like a hat. She says it both kept the rain off and warmed her up surprisingly well, but it also made her feel safe and protected. She says he was always sweet like that.

The grandfather was played by Peter Falk, who is most famous for starring as 'Columbo', a police detective, in a TV show that was very popular back in the 1970s (from 71 to 78) - so popular that even after the show was technically canceled, they brought him back to reprise the role in multiple TV specials after that, all the way up to 2003. … The man was so good, he got to play that character for 32 years!

I’m glad you enjoyed this movie, it’s an all-time favorite of mine and my family - we can quote just about every line 😄 if you’re interested, Cary Elwes (the man in black) wrote a book a few years ago about the making of the movie and its lasting impact on fans and the cast/crew alike. It’s called, of course, As You Wish, and it’s an absolute delight to read.
There’s a more recent movie called “Stardust” that actually manages to capture some of the magic that this movie does, I think you’d enjoy it as well!
