I don't care how unrealistic this movie is; it just makes me happy. I have seen it a dozen times or more, and I still laugh at the funny moments and feel Vivian's pain when she's mistreated and love how she changes Edward. It may be a silly plot, but it never fails to leave me with a good feeling.

I watched this movie A BUNCH OF TIMES during Desert Shield / Desert Storm. When we had off time, we had a video tent where we could check out a VCR video and watch it. There were several guys and girls in our group, and the girls kept wanting to watch this over-and-over. One of the best parts for me, was when Roxette sang "It Must Have Been Love." Something about hearing her sing helped with missing my wife and son for all those months. Unfortunately, she died of cancer, and I wish I could have hugged her and thanked her for the calm feeling her voice brought, but of course I can't. But I will always remember Marie Fredriksson with a very warm place in my heart!

    *Pretty* *Woman* *(1990)*
I saw this movie back in the day when I was in 4th or 5th grade (1991-1992) on VHS 📼. I didn’t see it in the theater back in early 1990 when I was still in 3rd grade but it was quite a phenomenon when it was out. I saw it multiple times in the early 90s because my mom owned a copy of this movie. Then I didn’t see it again until maybe 5-6 years ago. Almost 30 years. You know what? It actually holds up very well! It aged much better than Dirty Dancing (1987). I think it aged better than Batman (1989)!
It’s quite comparable to The Little Mermaid (1989) released 4 months earlier. Redheaded, attractive girl with a heart of gold and fish out of water story. It’s become one of my top 10 favorite chick flicks and rom-coms ever. This is Julia Roberts during her absolute prime after she did Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. Made her America’s sweetheart. I have an uncle who kinda looks like Eric Roberts, Julia’s older bro.
Very underrated performance by Héctor Elizondo who portrayed the hotel manager. Very kind to help Viv get a dress after that snotty saleswoman told her to leave. “Big mistake. Big. Huge!” In real life, Julia Roberts and Dey Young enjoyed working together and Dey is a sweet lady.
Great 2021 article on Dey Young…
    www.today.com/today/amp/tdna208842
Laura San Giacomo who portrays Vivian’s gal pal, Kit, is hilarious in it. The screenplay still holds up. Pretty Woman was kinda the blueprint for 90s rom-coms that followed it including Julia again in My Best Friend’s Wedding and all the rom-coms that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan did together in the 80s and 90s. The scene with Jason Alexander’s character trying to rape Vivian was a bit shocking and disturbing. This was years before he did Seinfeld. Jason is hilarious in Shallow Hal.
Movies like When Harry Met Sally and Pretty Woman still hold up today. If you were born in the 60s-70s and you’re female who saw Pretty Woman in the 90s, it’s probably one of your favorite movies. I think it’s better and funnier than the overrated Mean Girls (2004) and Barbie.
    Great songs!
“It Must’ve Been Love” - Roxette
    “Fallen” - Lauren Wood
“King of Wishful Thinking” - Go West
I have all those songs. There’s a great remake from Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon for “King of Wishful Thinking”.
Keep the 80s and 90s classics coming! Pretty Woman remains a timeless 90s classic. Reminds me of better days when I was ages 10-11 rewatching Pretty Woman and Troop Beverly Hills (1989). If you were born in the late 70s to early 80s (Xennial), you would’ve loved the late 80s through early 90s. It was a special time and feeling being a kid. No Internet, smartphones, and social media yet to ruin our fun.
I’m a straight dude who is not into rom-coms. I’ve seen quite a number of them in the 90s like Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, but rom-coms are not my thing. But I think Pretty Woman is still a great and iconic movie after 30+ years. Watch it again in 30 years and you’ll still have a smile on your face. I know I will.

Gary Marshall made another rom-com with Julia and Richard called "Runaway Bride", filming it in Maryland. (In fact, they filmed a scene within walking of where I lived in Baltimore, in a Bakery where I regularly bought myself sweet treats). Really interesting film. Recommended.
If you want to watch an obscure but strangely fun film, I would recommend "Warm Bodies" (2013), starring a young Nicholas Hoult and a supporting cast that includes John Malkovich and Rob Corddry.
My favorite comparison film triplet is:
-"About A Boy" (2002), starring Hugh Grant, 13yr-old Nicholas Hoult, and Toni Collette
-"Warm Bodies" (2013), starring 24yr-old Nicholas Hoult
-"Renfield" (2023), starring 34yr-old Nicholas Hoult, Nick Cage, and Awkwafina
Hoult is more than up to the demands of the roles in all these films, and they are demanding. I mean, a child actor toe-to-toe with Hugh Grant! amazing and very satisfying.
SOOO much fun watching you two watch!

"Runaway Bride" wasn't a critical success, but I still love it! It has an awesome soundtrack, too! It also has Hector Elizondo...and another favorite, Chris Meloni. Definitely worth a watch!

You guys have been an inspriation for me. I'm going thru a pretty rough time right now. I'm 49, single and I was laid off four months ago. My mom is youthful 70 and we enjoyed so many of the same movies in the late 80s and 90s togehter. Last week, I started going over to her house and rewatching a classic or introducing her to something I know she'll enjoy! It has been very healing and it's time I know I'll always treasure! There's a special connection between wonderful moms and their sons! Thank you for reminding me of that!!! LOVE you both!

Did you know that Julia Roberts was an unknown 21 year old when she made this movie? She auditioned twice before she got the role. This is the movie that launched her into superstardom. On the other hand, Richard Gere turned the roll down twice before accepting. Among Gere's many talents, he is also a concert level pianist. He wrote and played the piece he was playing in the bar scene. Gere snapping the jewelry case shut wasn't the only ad lib that made the final cut. There is a fair amount of ad libbing. This movie is worth reseaching because there is a lot of fun trivia to be learned about it. This is one of my favorite movies.

I definitely agree with you that this is the movie that launched her career as one of the most successful actresses of all time! But I think her winning a Golden Globe for Steel Magnolias the previous year was the only way she got a chance to do both auditions for this role. Pretty Woman is the movie that turned her into a $20mil actress in less than a decade!

Julie Roberts was on a chat show here in Britain. She said that originally the screenplay and script were much darker and grittier and less fairytale. Originally Richard Gere's character was supposed to open the car door and push her out into the gutter but the movie was bought by a different studio who rewrote it.

    • @Chefcorky
      @Chefcorky 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Yes! The original script was called 3,000. And it was very dark and gritty. At one point, Sly Stallone was attached. And at another point in the development, the leads were close to being Al Pacino and Michelle Pfieffer. THAT would have been interesting since they starred together in Scarface.

Wait!!!! Julia Roberts and Richard Gere got along. I believe they are still friends. Unless y'all were referring to Julia Roberts and Jason Alexander, which I have no idea.
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte did not get along while filming I Love Trouble.

1:35- I wouldn't call prostitution "rosy". I like Vivien, despite her sins of sexual immorality of selling herself when she's actually priceless she's actually pretty witty and very human. Also she has some scars to her that she faced(Just like anyone), but I give her credit for leaving that prostitution life by going back to finish high school and want to do better for herself and even conquered her fear of intimacy because of Edward.
28:39- Rahab was a prostitute who left her sin for righteousness when she feared God by helping the Israelite spies and she became an honest woman by getting married and birthing the husband of Ruth, Boaz. Had Rahab hadn't feared God she wouldn't have been apart of the lineage of Jesus Christ. So yes, even people who were living in sin can become born again in Christ.

I kinda wish we could see the original ending of this story: Edward throwing Vivian out of his car and leaving her. Then it would be a real fairy tale.
