    Gotta say, detaching the screen mid-movie and bringing surface book when i take a dump is one of the best things about surfacebooks.

      @TheRealBandito Only if it's a very demanding game and you choose max performance. It's not a limitation but a choice Microsoft gives you. After all, the mid graphics setting is called "Recommended" for a reason. They just allow you to go beyond the recommended settings. And the battery won't completely discharge, it will drop out of max settings before that happens. I play a lot of XCOM 2 and Witcher 3 with max details at 2k and have never had the problem.

    I've had a surface book for two years now. Beware that if anything goes wrong, you CANNOT fix it yourself because it's built like an apple. And also, Microsoft doesn't sell spare parts for it. That means you can't even purchase the keyboard half or tablet half if one of those breaks. You would have to buy a whole new SB.

    SB2 for me. I don't care about Thunderbolt 3 and I can make use of it in tablet mode, detached from the base.

    It defeats the point comparing these two. Whilst there will obviously be some crossover, these two have different primary target markets. The thinkpad is an out and out business laptop, a large proportion of the sales will be through bulk buying by businesses. The surface book is aimed more at the consumer market.

    • @ousarlxsfjsbvbg8588
      @ousarlxsfjsbvbg8588 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you!! I own that thinkpad and it is my business laptop. Some of my colleagues own a Surface Book 2, but they didn't buy it for work. The graphics card is not necessary except for 3D designers and intensive rendering/modeling. Otherwise, I've found that people only use it for gaming, which is not that popular in the workplace. The thinkpad is a more ideal laptop for business purposes because of vPro, the wider selection of ports, etc etc.. I have also found that many employers will find the ThinkShutter feature along with the mobile broadband option more appealing than anything the Surface Book 2 has to offer. They are both very good devices, but the majority of end users for both products come from different markets and look for very different things. Like you said, many business currently use ThinkPads and they have a reputation for being high quality business laptops, so many of their orders will be bulk buys. A lot of the people looking to buy the Surface Books will be looking for something they can easily take into bed to watch Netflix and game on... things like that.

    Thanks! Great video! Great comparison! Few questions:
    1) Is the ThinkPad with its poorer GPU still good enough for photo and especially video editing?
    2) Will the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock with GTX 1050 eGPU work with it? Will it be of any help for photo and video editing?
    3) How do the pens perform?
    4) Will you compare them with HP Zbook X2, please?
    Thanks!

    • @swissgamer0341
      @swissgamer0341 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) For Photo Editing its very good, for video editing its okay but certainly not for 4k editing
      2) It should work perfectly fine
      3) Awnsers in the video
      4) Thats not my decision :)

    • @swissgamer0341

    For a photographer, with one to get? Is the HDR screen enough to chose the Yoga over the SB2? In pure performance, photoshop and Lightroom, with will perform best?

  • @MrFudge05
    @MrFudge05 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I opted for the X1 Yoga because I could basically get the configurations that were important to me for $700 less (8th gen i7 cpu + 16 gb ram were my non-negotiables). I will be using it mainly for art creation/drawing, so there are some usability features I will miss from the SB2, but the yoga makes up for it with its incredibly bright and color accurate screen. Since this is my secondary machine, GPU and SSD size were not too important for me, so I could save on cost by cutting those out.

    • @MrFudge05
      @MrFudge05 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't use it for video editing, but I use it daily for pretty large photoshop files with lots of layers without a hitch. I don't use the included stylus much because I purchased a Wacom Bamboo Stylus to use for something a little more substantial. Drawing on it is good, but I still use it with a connected intuous tablet because I haven't gotten used to the pressure sensitivity difference yet. I think I can adapt to it though. My main gripe right now is that if you want to use the side buttons on the Bamboo Stylus (or even on the included stylus), you need to download Wacom's feel driver. This is okay, but it doesn't allow as much control as wacom's intuous drivers. Also, it seems that this driver conflicts with the Intuos's driver and you can't have both installed on windows at the same time.

      CoffeeEnthusiast they should be fine, i have a surface pro and i don’t have a problem with that. wacom drawing tablets wear down because the drawing surface of the tablet is bumpy, i think

  • @txmoney
    @txmoney 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with Dan about the 3:2 aspect ratio. Once you've used it, it's hard to go back to the traditional 16:9.
    That alone is enough for me to choose the SB2. However, better battery life and better gpu make the SB2 the clear winner for me.
    Plus, the SB2 looks so cool.

    The X1 Yoga DOES BREAK. My Gen 1 got a display back cover crack for no reason whatsoever, no drops, no impacts, no pressure or whatsoever other issue. It just appeared out of nowhere. Can't really define that as MIL-SPEC device. The bright side is that the device is a pleasure to use, even after 2 years.

    i much prefere wider displays than going back to 4:3 or 3:2, gives you much more screen real estate when you put 2 windows next to each other. something i use very frequently, on higher displays it will always cut smth off.

  • @seesaw7289
    @seesaw7289 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For ANY width of display, the 3/2 aspect ratio provides a larger surface area than the 16/9 ratio! That 16/9 movie can be played, same size on the same width of a 3/2 display. Those black bars show how much viewing content you are missing by using a 16/9 display. This is a reason IMAX theatres are so impressive size wise! This is why some people choose the MacBook Pro display because of its screen real estate for productivity.

    • @tuunaes
      @tuunaes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed wish that that 16:9 marketing buttfuck aspect ratio got ditched in PC's where it shouldn't have been brought in the first place.
      Preceeding 16:10 monitors had more image area and resolution:
      1680x1050 vs 1600x900
      1920x1200 vs 1920x1080
      2560x1600 vs 2560x1440
      Especially in smaller resolutions difference in space available for actual work is notable and just in reading anything you need to keep scrolling lot more.

    I got the Surface Book 2 about two month ago and I think it’s pretty much perfect for what I am doing with it. I am an Architecture student and use it for CAD-Software and stuff like Illustrator, Photoshop etc. It handles all these processes good( only the fans get a bit loud, but in the winter it’s ok ;)) also the feature to use the pen and draw and write really comes in handy for me. It’s really nice to go to lectures and write all the Notes in OneNote. (I got the 3000€ variant 15”)

    • @thatredheaddan5809
      @thatredheaddan5809 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fati AM I have the 15 inch Modell, for me the 13” would be way to small( maybe because my desktop pc has a 32” ) also I feel like using the sb2 in tablet mode as the 15” variant is much more comfortable to use. It’s refreshing working on such a big screen compared to smartphone :D the fans I think are not such a big deal I mean they have to keep a gtx1060 cool. I could imagine that the 13” model is over all quieter because it doesn’t have as much processing power cpu-and gpu wise.

    • @thatredheaddan5809
      @thatredheaddan5809 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fati AM I can’t really say if it handles cad software good or bad because I didn’t inform me so much about the x1 but by just seeing the raw specs I would say for now it could run Cad and 3D stuff, but since it only has a Intel UHD 620 as a graphics card I feel like it will not be quite capable of doing those tasks in the future, when the softwares get more advanced and demand more processing power... also Microsoft is very supportive about their devices and when any problems occur you can be pretty certain about replacement or repair. I feel like many people buy the best budget laptops with the best specs you can get and forget to consider build quality and customer support and then get upset if their devices stop working after 2 years. Don’t really now how Lenovo behaves at that point but Microsoft certainly does care about that ^^

      It depends on what profession though. Even just as an engineering student the Thinkpad doesn't have the dedicated graphics I need to run some of the software I need for my classes and will need for my job. The big issue is you can open the case of the X1 Yoga 3rd gen and swap the battery, 8022 M.2 SSD, and M.2 WiFi/BT. You can get replacement parts on eBay, including the keyboard and battery (which costs $50-$80 depending on how long you are willing to wait) and it uses standardized parts for the SSD and WiFi/BT, so they can be upgraded. In contrast, the Surface Book 2 is not designed to be fixed or upgraded, so you are going to throw it away after 3 years of use, because you can't expand the storage and the battery will be degraded. If the motherboard fails, you can't open the case and pull out the M.2 SSD and stick in into another machine to get your data. I wouldn't touch the SB2 with a ten foot pole, because I expect my laptops to last and be serviceable.

      Actually lot more if you want hardware with capabilities to stay good for many years. Meaning quad core CPU and 16GB of RAM.
      Which cost notably more with few fixed configurations of Surface Book vs Lenovo offering wider configurability of individual components.
      Along with user replaceable battery, ability to clean cooling and upgrading SSD later depending on need.
      Besides battery going bad cooling getting clogged by dust is possible thing to need maintenance.

      Intel U CPUs only have 12 lanes. Most laptops with a dGPU can not have additional thunderbolt because no lanes are left, only laptops that connect the GPU with 4 lanes (mx150 GPUs mostly) sometimes have single, half bandwidth thunderbolt port. You probably need 8 Lanes for a 1050 class GPU, then 4 for the m.2 ssd and all are gone.

    Perhaps for gamers 3:2 is better; but not only for movies but for productivity 16:9 wins hands down. In particular the ability to have two Word documents open side by side. Not to mention two Windows Explorer or many other combinations to leverage the core functionality of Windows.
    BTW, give me a TrackPoint for control any day. Matter of taste, but it is far more accurate and easy to use than any Pad.

    • @MrFudge05
      @MrFudge05 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      16:9 is also a lot better in creation/editing softwares as the tools and menus take up space on the side, so a wider screen allows for a larger canvas in the middle.

There's probably space reserved in the screen area for antennas. Lenovo might be in hot water for selling previous X1C6 and Y3 that said, "LTE upgradeable". Windows Central You lose about 30% with the GTX 1080. With future more powerful cards it will only be worse. With a dedicated GPU inside there is no need for an eGPU. Future GPU will fit even better into laptops. So again absolutely no reason for eGPU. Especially considering you have to buy a box to use it, which costs about $400, GPU not included. In the past even before it happened I always wished for eGPUs, but they are totally not worth it. Better go with a maxQ Laptop or wait for the next gen GPUs.
      The bandwidth problem is with the TB3 connection.
