As a surface book user since first day of surface book 1. I can tell you why very single form of the book is completely useful. no doubt. *Normal laptop mode*: 60% of time for me, working, gaming, watching vids etc... *Attached on the back*: 20% of the time, brainstorming, drawing, designing products etc, the inclination makes it feel so good... *Tablet mode*: 20% of the time, taking notes in class, showing and communicating work to others (you just detach it and give it to the person in front of you, or leave it on the table, flat, for the group to discuss) and most importantly: TAKING A SHIT (yes, feels really good to just detach your screen and go to the toilet with it, haven't thought of that have you?).
@@fkasample1543 your definitely not wrong, I found the title odd as well and found myself wondering the same exact thing! I wondered if maybe the title was supposed to read "who wouldn't buy this" 🤔! Either way I've never heard the phrase "who would actually buy this" used as a positive statement 🤷🏻♂️. I've always heard this phrase used as a means of expressing discontent with a product, as a joke about a product, or as a way of insinuating how stupid somebody would be to actually purchase a given product!
I'm with the suggestion that it's clickbait, but if you want to be optimistic, you could say it's because a lot of people don't see the logic behind it, or something of that nature, and the video is answering the question in the title.
The thing about the Surface Book 2 is that it has basically no competition, there's no other portable device that you can use for gaming, productivity, drawing, etc... Without peripherals, it's either the Surface Book 2 or a gaming laptop that'll still cut deep into your pocket, to which you must add a drawing tablet that's at least 100€, over 500 if you want one with a screen, and they also tend to be heavy af and quite big.
I'm an architect. I switched to Surface Book 2 15" from MacBook Pro 15" Touchbar. It's a different universe. Similar performance, but incomparably better usability for meetings, documentation, presentation and videoconferencing with scribbling on Skype-shared screen. SO MUCH MORE of a work computer than any MacBook can be. And then of course there is the incredibly bad MacBook keyboard (I got it replaced 2 times) and the counterproductive touchbar. It helps I only paid 2800 AUD at an airport duty free. Plus - Microsoft Store service in Sydney was impeccable - they replaced my Surface with a brand new one for a minor issue, no questions asked and didn't even check the faulty laptop. Just took it, gave me a new one AND let me keep both chargers! This is why it's worth paying 3000+ for this, every dollar. Comparably spec'ed Dell XPS and Lenovo Thinkpads cost actually more, have less features, and you wait weeks for your product and also any warranty resolutions later.
Wait, you paid $3000+ to make PowerPoint presentations? Okey... you said you’re an architect, how does the Surface Book outperforms a MacBook in architecture software?
@Jiri Francis, your comment is the strongest comment I read thus far, that is directing my decision to invest in a Surface 2. I currently have an 8 year old MacBook Pro bought brand new in Nov. 2010. I Love this model, NEVER had one problem just replace battery. Keyboard is the Best, paid $1300 after taxes. I just can't understand why Apple did away with the ports, changed the keyboard and raised the price so high. Steve Jobs was still alive and under his guidance, Apple was better then. So Iam thinking about this machine. My current Apple is still rocking, but limited to Software upgrade. I bet the 16, 17 & 2018 Macs won't last as long as my 13inch 2010.
@@evergreen- So you mention presentations and forgot all the other things he mentioned like documentation, videoconferencing, scribbling using the pen and of course a much better keyboard? He's happy with it had a bad experience with the other. Why can't you just admit that other people are happier with another OS device?
One thing they're perfect for: engineering students My surface book 1 has all the performance I need to not even take a mouse with me in order to do notes, CAD, and last all day. It's great
I don't understand how Linus judges laptop webcams, there was some potato stuff in the past that he considered pretty good and now this, pretty much the best built in webcam I've seen, is okayish?
lucimon97, how do u feel the performance of intel's integrated graphics while using the TITAN V as your daily driver...thats what exactly linus feels about these webcams while using the RED-HELIUM cameras as daily drivers!
Exactly, same to me... It's as good as it can get, giving the physical space for the lens and sensor. Cameras can't just get better because they are more recent, physics still have a major role in them, dedicated webcams will be better has handycams are better, as professional cameras are even better as a freaking RED camera is even better.
I'm looking to buy one for this purpose. I'm dual majoring in Game Development/Design and Animation, with a minor in CS. Workload consists of a ton of time in Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere Pro, with some CAD via Maya, Fusion 360, etc., and plenty of time in Unreal Engine and Unity. Suffice to say, I need something powerful enough to power all those apps, with great portability (I walk 10+ kilometers daily getting to class and walking between buildings). I do a bunch of digital art as well. The Surface Book 2 honestly seems like it checks every single one of my boxes. Seems like the perfect laptop for me.
Same. Runs Slicr and Autodesk like a champ. (though those apps eat through your battery life like a lightsaber through science, and your charger won't save you this time)
diego maradonna He wants to solve the worlds problems of lack of proper fecal disposal by inventing a cheaper alternative to water closets, so yeah, he does want something he can’t afford to😂
I was a bit miffed because I purchased a Surface Book w/ the performance base last May in preparation for college after the underwhelming release of the Surface Laptop, then Microsoft drops the Surface Book 2 right at the end of my first semester. Gotta say that this thing has made my life way easier though. The note taking is ace and it can run most games well enough for me to enjoy them. The surface dock is a nice addition as well.
I prefer note taking using papers tho. Ofcourse its personal choice. Im currently using Asus ROG G551VW with Icore7 GTX960 and 16 GB of RAM ( My brother bought it in 2016) and it has the same average price of Surface Book. Idk about you but I love this so much as for Electrical Engineering student its a perfect laptop. And I think for gaming its better too. More heavy-duty laptop. You might want to check it out bro Gaming laptops are not that bad for college tbh.
I'm an EE as well and even though there are times where I wish I had a bit more horsepower, it doesn't affect me much at all. Walking around campus I only have my laptop, one thin notebook, one folder, calculator, and writing utensils. I can also access my notes through my phone or other computers if my laptop isn't near me. Nifty as hell but definitely not required for college or anything. No issues with CAD either. I use this regularly for PCB designs and making 3D models. Occasionally the 3D stuff can slow down depending how complicated it gets but never intolerable or anything.
I just did my research and yes its 1000$ cheaper than the Surface Book 2 with the *SAME SPEC* man. Now I wonder why theyre so expensive? Gotta do ur research before buying man.
Specs are only one part of the price. The Surface Book is a premium laptop which begs a higher price. I don't mind dropping the extra cash for a full magnesium body, great display, facial recognition, and all that jazz. I spent a solid year doing the research before buying so it wasn't a blind purchase or anything, just one that fit my needs almost perfectly for a price that I could afford.
Enony Muz if you like your pen and paper it doesnt matter how expensive SB is or isnt, its not for you. OP did his research and decided (like me) that he didnt mind paying for the extra utilty
I bought it. It's alright. Handles most applications flawlessly. Games run fine. Feels slightly heavy, even though it's really not. Runs extremely cool and quiet; the hugest advantage I've seen over my razer blade.
It looking heavy is most definetly due to the main components sitting on the screen portion of the machine, the screen is literally the entire laptop, while the base is almost like an external dock with egpu. I love my surface, but it feels somewhat awkward because its so top heavy.
Yeah, it runs surprisingly cool for its specs, I thought it melt with the GTX 1060, and the i7 cooled by a puny fan. But it doesn't, which is surprising when compared to Apple's stuff (the Surfacebook's fans are not much more powerful). The only gripes I have are the underpowered charger and the fact that the heat pipes basically spread the heat from the CPU to your batteries in the top case. Oh, and the whole bloody thing is less serviceable than Macs. Their SSD is standard and NOT soldered to the motherboard, but good luck reaching it, also, isn't being able clean your fans and replace the thermal gunk a must for laptops?
Never understand how people these days say thickness is a big deal?, I mean compared to what people were using even a few years ago nearly everything is light as fuck, I get it for people travelling but where do you draw the line? I'd rather have some heft and a decent amount of ports as well as good build quality but all I want is just to be able to use a power bank via type c, why is this too much to ask?
Nick F but that's what I'm getting at? What even is heft these days? I mean the new MacBooks are literally the thickness of a notebook? Even linx tablets are light
Fuck ports. Give me light weight devices. I went from a 1.7kg PC with 3 USB A ports to a 768g PC with 1 USB A and I couldn't be happier. Even the build quality was better on the lighter device.
Because it's a portability machine. It's a blessing to have the extra space. I'd be alright with the SB if it didn't have a gaping hole through the center, though. Ridiculous.
I did! and I love it!! It's great for anyone who wants a powerful laptop that is also a great tablet. I tear off the screen to write out solutions during my HS physics class lectures connected wirelessly to the big screen in the classroom and I love the ability to walk around the room and draw as I walk and talk. Sometimes I even hand the tablet to a student to have them work out a solution for all to see. the SB2 works well for me because I want the functionality of a laptop and the flexibility of a tablet in one device. There are not currently any other options out there I know of that allow one OS across both devices. With an SB2 it just works!
Philip Cooper I kinda know what you’re getting at when it comes to phones, but when has Apple ever stole something from another computer? Also what features are you even referring to? Nothing that ground breaking that no one else is already doing. I’m honestly not really trying to defend Apple, I just hate the whole “Lmao Apple sucks.” Comment on basically every tech video.
I just made a joke (and it wasn't even my joke), get over it. Also, if you use google you'll find a plenty of times when Apple announced already invented and produced technology and called it their own design + started several lawsuits which they lost. If you want to amuse yourself, use google to check all the stuff Apple did not invent, yet claimed they did.
Been using my 15" Surface Book 2 now for just over a year and LOVE IT. I had to upgrade from my 2013 Macbook pro, and comparing to current macbook pro, unless you hate Windows, I don't see a reason to choose a Mac over this.
One major use case: CAD. It's cheaper than new workstation laptops, it's touch pen is really well supported in the high end CAD market, and 3DConnexion finally updated their wireless setup (one plug for both mouse and 3D rotator). Also, it's a supported platform for Siemens NX. Could totally see a fancier auto company (Daimler for example) buying these as fancy work laptops for it's engineers.
if you insist on using lbs as a measurement for weight could you please add kilograms next to it, because no one outside North America has any reference if this is heavy or light (since you do use mm already)
wswsd 32 It stays under 75c under full load, what else do want? I'm pretty sure the last time I checked MacBook Pro temperatures they were really near the max limit of what the GPU can handle. Pretty bad. And considering that the Surface Book 2 is as thin and keeps it really cool is a huge win!
+Rotiik _ ehhhh, I mean you'd probably get more with a mac compared to the Microsoft, and they're about the same price for maxed out versions. Im not no fan boy, but im sure you can get a lot more productivity done with a Mac compared to a Surface.
You're not supposed to use the mouse when plugged. You may damage the mouse or the cable and get a mediocre experience. It's a wireless mouse, charge it and way some minutes, then charge it again overnight. Since they don't want you to do it and you are loudly claiming you want (because... f**k your money, i guess?), Apple has made a great choice by phisically preventing you from doing that. Apple is just smarter than you and every single reviewer who seem not to understand this very simple principle.
As an engineering student, I would absolutely love one. (Currently have the Surface Pro 4.) But I also use Final Cut and the configuration I would like to get is out of my budget. On top of that, the lack of Thunderbolt 3 is kind of a dealbreaker. If the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is reasonably priced, gets similar performance and battery life, I will most likely get that one.
The West Winger In that case, let me plug my channel really quick, where I have a full review of the Surface Pro 3, 4, and an overview of all the new productivity features available on iPads since iOS11. I personally am quite happy with the Surface Pro 4, but would appreciate slightly longer battery life and USB-C / Thunderbolt 3. If you don’t mind having a desktop, I would go for a custom PC for running engineering software + the current “budget” iPad with Apple Pencil for taking notes and use on campus. (Of course, if you have the budget and don’t mind the bulk, go for the Surface Book 2. Seems like an amazing machine.)
Watching from a SurfaceBook 2, nearly 10 months in and I still love it, I don't think I could go back to any other laptop, it just does so many things so much better. I think the thing that's most impressive is the better life, literally all day literally life, mostly thinks to them putting a lot of the components behind the screen so there's just so much room for so much battery. I also never thought I'd use a touch screen on a laptop but I prefer using it to the trackpad because it's just so much quicker than dragging around a pointer, especially if you have a visual impairment like myself and sometime take a couple of seconds to locate the mouse. I use the touch screen most when video editing, really improves the editing experience. Because of its design (again putting a lot of components behind the screen), even when the CPU is working and its heating up you never hear a fan and unlike every other laptop my legs never start to burn lol.
A good looking powerful laptop with a detachable screen that's more powerful than an iPad with an actual place to put the pen, and if you want even more battery life you can flip it and put it back on the keyboard. It replaces all of your notebooks. I don't see how a MacBook Pro is any better. I don't see the downside. P.S The Macbook's Touchbar is a joke.
it's an absolute wet dream for me, as a designer, gamer and PC lover. And it is a fair evaluation. I use a macbook pro at the office, and when you get the gestures on hand, the magic trackpat is very useful. ALMOST makes up for the lack of shortcut keys in OSX. Only.... it is so much a "wet dream" this surface book, I just wet my pants on a wee after seing the tag-price :(
Anything you can do with a gesture in MacOS, you can do with a shortcut. And there are tons of shortcuts for almost everything, though not all are enabled by default. Checkout the shortcuts tab in the Keyboard section of System Preferences.
Tomas Palacios I’ll buy this at a high price range, but the only thing which stops it from being an ideal pc/laptop is the lack of a thunderbolt 3 port. FFS for that price they should’ve added that thing atleast !
Maybe.... In my personal experience, I have nor yet needed such port.... but then... Maybe if I had 4k quid to cash-out for that kind of computer, I'd have comed across some USEFUL gadget that exploits capabilities of a thunderbold 3. (if my english is too thrashy... it's because yo hablo español, so please bear with me)
This is perfect for me I’m a student and I need a laptop and THIS IS IT! I can do homework, draw, take some notes, watch yt on tablet mode, and some gaming.
LOVE my Surface Book 2!! 15"/256G SSD Model, this thing lasts literally forever on one charge and has all the power that I could ever want. Got the Surface Dock for my desk and voila! A perfect at-home gaming setup.
The hinge is mainly for better grip if you are an artist and need to hold it correctly while you draw on it. I have the 1st gen version for $900 with the Nvidia on Amazon a year back and I've used it for everything. From going to college, to giving presentations, to doing some editing, to going out in the field for military exercises (Was mainly using the screen and not the whole thing). I've been able to edit videos with the laptop and also play games with it every once in a while as I'm able to play Warframe and other games even though obviously not at max settings. I constantly beat the fuck out of this PC and it always delivers.
I go the surface pro + gaming PC route. good combo. got a used pro3 for 400 and build a pc for like 700. best of both worlds, i remote desktop all the time and it works great on the good internet at my uni.
Who would buy this? Me. Served me so well during college, performed superbly. Frequently was running adobe suite programs, rhino 3D or another 3d modeling program, as well as rendering and raytracing programs all at once. Only have run into issues now in 2024, about 6 months after Microsoft ended device and service updates.
The gimmicky disconnecting tablet screen did give some issues for a while when there was a driver issue preventing the screen from disconnecting, but the ability to draw by hand like I was sketching did come in handy often. But I’m in architectural design so probably not for everyone.
and good luck getting a battery replacement for the Surface Book 2; it scored a dismal 1 in iFixit's repairability rating; because they used copious amounts of glue in its construction.
Jacob So basically, you stored it improperly or had it crushed between two things. It's pretty dumb to blame that on the computer. You were aware of the shape, use common sense.
Because the camera is one of (if not the) major selling points for a smartphone nowadays, but not for a laptop. Plus, you have to compare video to video. And smartphone videos aren't great either. A laptop webcam however is almost exclusively used for video.
what would make it really cool would be a dual screen for the front and back for instances like meetings and showing off ur work ideas to someone else while watching the screen
Science and Engineering students. Being able to go from FPGA development on a proper keyboard to dodgy communication and DSP notes with a pen is amazing. And then being able to make use of the CUDA in the GPU to do some basic ML is amazing. The only problem is that as student I spent (for me currently) a lot of money on it. Worth it imo, but I went in with some trepidation. Plus I can play (some) games on it in between all that!
Look, I've been using the new surface book 2 for just over a month now (my model is a I7 15" with 512SSD) and I can safely says it's THE best computer I've ever used. I FRICKING LOVE IT! My previous computer was a Mac Pro, and to all Mac Pro users who are tempted to switch to the surface I say DO IT!!! Its awesome and you will NOT regret it!!!!!!!!!!
Can we get an update? I've heard some things about reliability issues (like, the GPU not being recognized, having to close Chrome when you detach, etc)
@@GabrielJanich I don't use a tinfoil hat search engine either because I find Google to be sufficiently transparent in information and control with/about collecting your data. With that said, let's not take this thread that off topic with an out-of-left-field crusade. 🙄
Well, it's a german brand, and in germany, you pronounce every letter in a word, so the E is pronounced. Though, never heard that letter in any other language...
Jules G the british don't have difficulties pronouncing it correctly, watch an episode of top gear. jeremy clarkson once made fun of americans mispronouncing every brandname (yes i know linus canadian)
Hashirama Senju i wasn't saying it's difficult to pronounce. It's just people are not used to. I'm both French and German, and never pronounce the E when speaking French ^^ (Well in the other way around, I pronounce the W of BMW like the German W when speaking French. W in German is pronounced like the English V, and mostly pronounced like the English W in French)
One thing I really like about my Surface Book 2 is that all the heat is in the screen area and not on my lap. I can have it sitting in my lap and remain cool with the fans almost always silent vs other laptops that struggle to breath. That alone with all the other great features make it the laptop to beat for me.
Norms I dislike ads, but your ads don't stick out like a sore thumb on your channel, they have the same style and feel as the rest of your show and I think that's awesome. It feels less of an annoying spammy thing and more of a recommendation.
I really hate when youtubers say the foldable hinge was a bad design choice. I think it looks awesome, very futuristic, different from everything on the market, plus it’s very comfortable to draw and write because it has a perfect shape to hold, just like a real paper notebook.
Needed a gaming-capable laptop that was also very portable but I also needed a tablet for professional work was thinking of getting a Hp Envy + a Samsung galaxy tab until I stumbled on this gem of a video, thanks Linus.😂
well... in reality its not this. the CPU is inside the screen section (and a 2h-3h battery) the GPU and most of the battery is in the base. so the screen detached does have the GPU, you fall back in the intel integrated GPU.
This is really meant for those who have money, first and foremost and those who want the absolute best laptop they can get their hands one. Which the Surfacebook 2 really is. The MacBook Pro might be seen as such a device but it really isn't. The SB2 absolutely blows it away in almost every regard. Do you Photoshop, then look no further as there is nothing else out there that comes close to it's performance and utility. Play games, no problem, are you a programmer, this excels at it, video editing, yes, especially so, with the Nvidia 1060, quad core CPU and ample memory, you will be blaze through even the most demanding projects with ease, even more so than a fully loaded MacBook Pro. If it isn't clear already, I am a huge fan of this product. It is the best laptop for productivity I have ever owned. The best laptop for gaming and video editing though goes to my newly acquired Alienware R4 15" with the amazing 6 Core 8950HK, 32GB of 2666 Mhz Ram, 1080P 120HZ display, 2 X Samsung 960 M.2 512Gb, 2TB Western Digital Black SSD SATA and a Nvidia 1080. This laptop has replaced the SurfaceBook 2 for video editing and games because of obvious reasons. Though for everything else, especially for Photoshop, Illustrator, Resolve, FruityLoops, Office, etc., the SurfaceBook 2 is my go to computer. Both are also connected to a Samsung 49" monitor which supports simultaneous connections of both laptops, so I have the Alienware come up on the right and the Surfacebook on the left.
I have the dual-core i5 model and honestly, it has been amazing. It makes zero noise, so no annoying whining noise. It has a beautiful display with a long battery life. I can play all the games except the new AAA games. I have zero complaints about the base model.
for those, who cry about thunderbolt 3 because of multiple 4k displays, i would say, that get a Surface Dock, and hook up the monitor(s) to it. Yes, it is expensive, but if you cry with your single 4k@60Hz display, and you want at least 2, than just pay it. As for external GPU-s... Yes I understand, that it would be better to use a 1080Ti with thunderbolt 3 instead of the 1060 6GB. But is it THAT important?
I'm Jack's Nipples yes, sounds like that. I really like the surface book. But i also don't like many things (it sucks that you can't repair it) and i don't agree that they can miss thunderbolt 3. They should've put that inside. But also i don't think, that this is a terrible computer because the lack of thunderbolt. There aren't many things to hate in the SB2, so if this is the BIG mistake, then it is a great computer ;)
Well. I bought one. It arrives tomorrow. And I can tell you lots of people are as well. It's constantly selling out fast on their website even today. I got the 15" 512GB with the i7, gtx 1060 and 16gb of ram edition.
Without watching the video yet, I use mine for college and take it home to play games like Dota and Wildlands maxed out without having to bring home my whole gaming PC. Best laptop I've ever owned hands down.
I had a surface book 1 and actually loved it with the "940m", but it did need more power in it. It's expensive, but it does it's job rather well. The battery life was solid.
Jeff I think it's not selling really good. Maybe that's the reason it's been massively reviewed all over the internet for the second time since it came out... I can't find the article reporting it's sales tho... It's good machine but dumb would I be too purchase it at this or slightly lower price.. Man, I get so pissed off when I see the prices of some things.. It's simply not worth it.. I mean, look at the cameras for example.. For years now, they sell under pretence that they are getting better, cheaper etc. When customers complain then they say it's more expensive cos the "new big and improved" sensor... In the meantime, I phone came with is nail sized img sensor and blew off "all" of those cameras for under a 1000$.. But"now" new explanation is that cameras are pricey because they offer more versatility cos you can buy all the different lenses for it.. Then people say lenses are to expensive. Manufactured defend saying they have many glass elements that require expensive production methods. In the meantime, they start selling the new almost pocketable lenses. Maybe not of the same picture quality but damn good enough... For fucks sake..
I spent 1700 bucks and got the i7, gtx 1050, 16 ram, 256gb surface book 2, with surface pen and surface precision mouse included, absolutely worth every penny, fuck if I knew it was this good I would have paid 2500 for it at release. The camera is excellent, Linus is fucking blind. People forget that smartphone front facing selfies are that good because of selfies, to have a conference 1080p is more than enough, not to mention that the microphones on this device are outstanding. The display, keyboard, touchscreen, touchpad, charging, performance, design. Every single bit of it. Its a fucking hybrid and there isnt a single laptop in the market that offers this level of quality with this level of versatility. Meanwhile apple is selling 2000 dollar laptops with 8gb, 256 with i5 and integrated graphics with outdated design and god awful garbage keyboard and camera and not a single one of these reviewer are half as hard on them.
Old vid ish now but if you compare this to buying a wacom product to use with a laptop or wacoms own surface esque designs it's actually much better value for money for professional art (and yes the pen is good enough to do professional art). I really wish you'd get a graphics/photoshop person, even if it's someone you just bring in for a vid, to review the art aspect of this. You even covered it in the surface studio and the 2D art (and possible light 3d on 15" especially) capabilities of these is amazing. There is no other device like them with this build quality at this price. (even if it is super expensive). Hopefully more 2 in 1's will integrate good pens by default (spectre 15 doesn't have tilt to my knowledge which to me seems ludicrous that the more powerful/capable one is less good for art)
Watched on my 15" SB2. It replaced my old MBP- I don't miss it at all. If you're lucky enough to win the MS lottery and get a good one without issues, it's probably the best well-rounded laptop on the market. Flawlessly transitions between coding, university work, and gaming.
Fun fact, connect a phone dongle to the type c port and you would be able to use your inline mic and controls on the surface. ANY type c dongle should do. I use the HTC U12+, and their dongle works like a champ on the Surfacebook, if fact, it is better, as it enables full inline controls
I have one and use it daily. Love the pen features and do some light gaming on it. More of an advanced office and content creator. OneNote is by far my favorite app, and using the pen with it on my surface to A+++
1+. We need a "Laptop keyboard wars" video! Surface Book 2 vs ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen. I never had a Surface Book 2. X1C6 keyboard is amazing. The best laptop keyboard I used this decade. My only problem is with the Fn Key Placement. Would really love a review comparing the two.
Workwise I'm a big fan of the surface book (basically using it for meetings / out of the office and engineering sketches on the desk ), but I still use my workstation for CAD/ Heavy lifting
I have been using the surface book 1 during almost 2 years already and i can see IT IS THE BEST LAPTOP IN THE MARKET , I HAVE LEARN A LOT ABOUT SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE AND I HAVE BECOME A COMPUTER TECHNICIAN IN THE WAY OF KNOWLEDGE . IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY BUY IT , IF DON'T BUY IT WITH CREDIT . Imagine the surface book 2 i will be even better
The Surface Pro fanless model is more practical, unless you need the graphics card. No noise or fan dust is key. Besides, the main issue of the Surface Book is that the USB Ports are at the base, while the surface Pro has the USB in the "tablet mode", which is better to me, because you can use it in Tablet mode as a real computer, without having to secure your data ifrom your pensrive every time you switch to tablet mode.
The thing about computers is there's never a right time to buy nor a model that hits everything although for me the sb2 is exactly what I need. My next favorite was the 2018 MacBook pro so I decided I need to own both ha great motivation for an entrepreneur. It really doesn't matter what you choose as It all starts with a thought you can do anything, no laptop will stop you!
The only thing I worry about is if you put pressure on it, there's always a slim chsnce that something will give before the connection between the keyboard and screen. Something can lodge itself in there and scratch the screen. Its just not safe, and for what reason besides style?
I am watching this on an ASUS X551MA, a cracked screen I have refused to fix and a LG LED 20 inch monitor. Windows 10. 2.15 gigahertz Intel Celeron N2830..When I finally upgrade I will have saved tons of money and will get something amazing.I will be ahead of the curve.
*Tablet mode*: 20% of the time, taking notes in class, showing and communicating work to others (you just detach it and give it to the person in front of you, or leave it on the table, flat, for the group to discuss) and most importantly: TAKING A SHIT (yes, feels really good to just detach your screen and go to the toilet with it, haven't thought of that have you?).
theni The last one sold me lmao
I'm sold. Always wanted a portable shit top.
Mine's normally 70 percent attached tablet, 25 percent laptop, and 5 percent detached tablet, but I do a lot of art
what drawing programs ya'll using?
@@prime201 I use Clip Studios. It's pretty common to get it at 50 percent off if you just watch for it
I'm confused why is this titled "Who would buy this?" when the whole video basically just gives it pretty outstanding praise
he might not be saying it in a negative connatation
maybe your pessimistic
@@shawncho8476 A solid enough grasp of the English language is enough to know "Who would buy this?" carries already itself a negative connotation.
It's called clickbait.
Angel Alonso wat about wacom studio pro 16inch???
Isn't that nearly as expensive as the surface pro itself, while not being apt for as many things?
Lenovo Yoga 720 half the price all the nice
Lies, all lies HP Spectre with AMD Vega is just as powerful for half the price
Dell xps 15
Was this the 2018 Macbook pro or the 2017 version?
@@evergreen- it probably doesnt but its better anyways

One thing they're perfect for: engineering students

I don't understand how Linus judges laptop webcams, there was some potato stuff in the past that he considered pretty good and now this, pretty much the best built in webcam I've seen, is okayish?
I agree, this is pretty much as good as it gets for built-in laptop webcams atm.
Yep, by far the best laptop webcam anywhere
Exactly what I was thinking
lucimon97, how do u feel the performance of intel's integrated graphics while using the TITAN V as your daily driver...thats what exactly linus feels about these webcams while using the RED-HELIUM cameras as daily drivers!

In the sea of laptops, there's only one that rises to the surface 😉
Ha I like that
@Yannik Seidel lmao it was a joke about the Surface Book 2
R/whooosh
Microsoft: Write that down. Write that down!
It’s alright? Doesnt sound too excited.
Their SSD is standard and NOT soldered to the motherboard, but good luck reaching it, also, isn't being able clean your fans and replace the thermal gunk a must for laptops?
my man, can you run games with the keyboard detached?
Hrisikesh Bhattacharya yeah you can, just maybe not with as much power so don’t expect counter strike on a tablet :)
Surface Book is literally a miracle by 2010 standards.
Ridiculous.
Actually I think it looks pretty cool.
I did! and I love it!!
Surface Book still has some cool ideas. Apple will sure invent them in a few years.
Philip Cooper I found the jerryrigeverything fan
Philip Cooper I kinda know what you’re getting at when it comes to phones, but when has Apple ever stole something from another computer? Also what features are you even referring to? Nothing that ground breaking that no one else is already doing.
I’m honestly not really trying to defend Apple, I just hate the whole “Lmao Apple sucks.” Comment on basically every tech video.
Smeaxyskittles i mean from my understanding Lenovo had a touch bar in 2014...
+Smeaxyskittles Isnt the Ipad Pro literally a copy of Surface Pro ? before that "no one needs a stylus was their moto".

TheZyxSpeed what about the weight? I have a dell XP’s 13 and it’s pretty light
Could be bigger bro ;-)
I carry mine with me everywhere I go. Weight hasn't been an issue, and I use to own a Razer Blade Stealth, which I imagine is lighter.

GTX 1060 is really impressive in this type of device. Good job Microsoft
$3000 sure
wswsd 32 It stays under 75c under full load, what else do want? I'm pretty sure the last time I checked MacBook Pro temperatures they were really near the max limit of what the GPU can handle. Pretty bad. And considering that the Surface Book 2 is as thin and keeps it really cool is a huge win!
you can get the GTX1060 on the $2000 model
Only the 15'' has the 1060 and it starts at $2500 with 256GB of storage.
+Rotiik _ ehhhh, I mean you'd probably get more with a mac compared to the Microsoft, and they're about the same price for maxed out versions. Im not no fan boy, but im sure you can get a lot more productivity done with a Mac compared to a Surface.

Apple: hold my magic mouse
You're not supposed to use the mouse when plugged. You may damage the mouse or the cable and get a mediocre experience. It's a wireless mouse, charge it and way some minutes, then charge it again overnight.
Since they don't want you to do it and you are loudly claiming you want (because... f**k your money, i guess?), Apple has made a great choice by phisically preventing you from doing that.
Apple is just smarter than you and every single reviewer who seem not to understand this very simple principle.

As an engineering student, I would absolutely love one. (Currently have the Surface Pro 4.)
But I also use Final Cut and the configuration I would like to get is out of my budget. On top of that, the lack of Thunderbolt 3 is kind of a dealbreaker.
If the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is reasonably priced, gets similar performance and battery life, I will most likely get that one.
Darcer's Tech what do you recommend for me? I'm gonna be doing aerospace engineering

I’ll buy this at a high price range, but the only thing which stops it from being an ideal pc/laptop is the lack of a thunderbolt 3 port. FFS for that price they should’ve added that thing atleast !

Warframe can run on potatoes tho. A 1060 is overkill.

I love the clam wedge. Love it! Looks sturdy, and I don't have to worry about dirt getting trapped between the screen and keyboard.
Plz never change how you promote products. This way is perfect!
That hinge is actually ergonomic for holding. Molds well into your hand. To hell with looks.
Bhargav Reddy yeah. Put it in a backpack for a year.
Fucked my surface book to the point of battery swelling, wouldn’t have happened with a Mac.
and good luck getting a battery replacement for the Surface Book 2; it scored a dismal 1 in iFixit's repairability rating; because they used copious amounts of glue in its construction.
Jacob Have had mine in one for two years and no issues. My backpack has a pocket for laptops and I also keep it in its own case though.
Jacob So basically, you stored it improperly or had it crushed between two things. It's pretty dumb to blame that on the computer. You were aware of the shape, use common sense.
Next video why do laptop webcams suck considering the fact we have amazing cameras in our smartphones
Abhishek Guru same reason cameras in budget phones are terrible. It's not sold for it's quality, but price. Camera tech costs money.
I'm pretty sure laptop cameras look better for recording a person's face
Because they barely ever get used. Heck, I don't even use the front camera on my phone.
Why would I ever need to use a camera in my laptop, I have a smartphone...

Well, it's a german brand, and in germany, you pronounce every letter in a word, so the E is pronounced. Though, never heard that letter in any other language...

Gtx1060 and i7 on a tablet is pretty impressive
well... in reality its not this.
the CPU is inside the screen section (and a 2h-3h battery)
the GPU and most of the battery is in the base.
so the screen detached does have the GPU, you fall back in the intel integrated GPU.

Nice drawing
I have the dual-core i5 model and honestly, it has been amazing. It makes zero noise, so no annoying whining noise. It has a beautiful display with a long battery life. I can play all the games except the new AAA games. I have zero complaints about the base model.
no matter where you touch it, it feels solid and well crafted..... dirty little linus
For anyone who has it does it work well with a drawing tablet
L1mune it can be used as a drawing tablet and its really good, there is good free ( and paid ) software for it and im guessing it will work fine
BadassRRMF yeah I did end up getting it it works friggin great (and I got Krita which is also great and free)
Can i have the Drawing of Max?
that wd be inappropriate for u!
for those, who cry about thunderbolt 3 because of multiple 4k displays, i would say, that get a Surface Dock, and hook up the monitor(s) to it.
I have the lower spec version and as someone who is not killing his machine I can say it is an amazing computer so yes, buy it.
Michael O how good are playing games on it?
@@parcusmeake3642 very good.
6:15 he made some chips :)
We can live without anything Mac.
Thanks Linus!
Too heavy?
Start lifting weights
Without watching the video yet, I use mine for college and take it home to play games like Dota and Wildlands maxed out without having to bring home my whole gaming PC. Best laptop I've ever owned hands down.
I had a surface book 1 and actually loved it with the "940m", but it did need more power in it. It's expensive, but it does it's job rather well. The battery life was solid.
You're just a little late Linus
3:38 for your answer
Jeff
I think it's not selling really good.
What are you doing at 6:20 with this poor GTX,Titan XP ....
5:28 lmao my drawing skills.
S/O to my people who have never actually used a laptop on their lap.
*watching from a surface book 2* me....
Same hahah, love it.
Watching on a surface pro 4
Elephoontof theShanpes rich boi
Watching on my razor gaming laptop peasants
Elephoontof theShanpes you wasted $3,300 on this?? 😂
The 1060...how did they fit that in there?
removed the optical drive and i/o's....junk
because there is no cpu at the bottom
lmao!
Because its *T H I C C*
With the $3000 price tag lmao
Fun fact, connect a phone dongle to the type c port and you would be able to use your inline mic and controls on the surface. ANY type c dongle should do. I use the HTC U12+, and their dongle works like a champ on the Surfacebook, if fact, it is better, as it enables full inline controls
I have one and use it daily. Love the pen features and do some light gaming on it. More of an advanced office and content creator. OneNote is by far my favorite app, and using the pen with it on my surface to A+++
"Lol get wrecked bro"*playing cities skylines*(a city building game)
I mean, comparing a keyboard to the Macbook keyboard doesn't really mean anything... For real now, how does it compare to Thinkpad's keyboard?
Better than the thinkpad keyboard, but I miss the nub. imo this keyboard is only second to full sized mechanical keyboards.

ChamChoCraft buy a Boston major flash gaming sticker on the steam market. They will be worth thousands in upcoming years.. trust me.. only 26 cents
Ollie B u can’t resell digital goods tho
ChloeWade u can iam pretty sure steam has a used store from gamers vut its restricted to some users
$3200?!?, I’m bout to be broke
I would buy it but my wallet screams ‘PAY THE BILLS’
2:49 WHAT!? 🙄😮😶😣
1:53 Where did you get that wallpaper on the surface laptop?

Review and unboxing
I don't get what people have against the slanted screen design.
I believe the word you're looking for is "courage"
It's awesome! If Apple did it it would be revolutionary
You watch, they'll "borrow" the design and called it revolutionary - like they always do with other people's ideas.
The only thing I worry about is if you put pressure on it, there's always a slim chsnce that something will give before the connection between the keyboard and screen. Something can lodge itself in there and scratch the screen. Its just not safe, and for what reason besides style?
*lappable*
When laptops also need bae quality
hb0x hehe I agree
5:28 come one linus. This is a tech video, really didn't need that jump scare.
