This boss fight was one of my favorite gaming moments of all time. I used to play this game and let my little brother "play." I used to just give him the 2nd Controller while I played and he thought he was playing even when he wasn't. Until he was.

92fatmack It’s been so long since I’ve played MGS. I’m pretty sure you can still see him without the goggles. You just have to be quick and run to where he appears to attack him.
@@thereal_lil_vic you don’t even need to use thermal goggles. Are gamers that lazy? You can see Mantis outline while he’s invisible and you can use first person view to find his location.

Is no one going to mention how sad this actually is. We all expect him to be this heartless monster but he turns to be well...better than that.
true. his past is indeed tragic and how much he was despised, which turned him into who he was.
Especially since the original guide book sets up he’s not even the one doing this- he’s urged on by the parasitic nature of his own powers and the evil of the minds he’s encountered. According to the original guide, he’s trying to get someone to kill him “as he believes that the parasite within him will disappear [upon his death], allowing him a brief moment of piece.”
None of FOXHOUND were heartless (save for maybe Liquid), that’s why they are the best MGS cast of antagonists of all the games IMO. You walk away from each of their deaths feeling like they are human because they open up in their final moments to reveal something deeper about themselves. Mantis, Wolf and Raven were not evil -they were simply on the opposite side of the battlefield.
@@toastedravis That's the beauty of Metal Gear, in my opinion. Many of the "villains" have a sincere reason for doing what they do. They aren't heartless monsters. Merely human beings afflicted with the tragedies of war.

Man this game taught me so much about life as a young teenager. Probably was a little more fatalistic than a young mind needed, but you can understand it alot better looking back in hindsight. Everything they talking about in this game is so true.
Same here, Snake talking about finding a purpose to live at the end spoke to me as a young 14-year-old.
Good thing I didn't play Metal Gear when I was young. I would be been like "So, this is how I will end up... all alone". I mean, it was obvious in retrospect, but I was still optimistic about life in my teens.

They don't make gaming moments like this anymore wished they did stuff like this again.
With the advent of the internet, there is no way it could ever be done again. Sure, you could possibly do the memory reading part by looking at save files and creating scripted parts for them but utilizing the puzzle solving elements OUTSIDE of the game would easily be ruined by the internet just revealing how to beat the boss using controller port swapping or how to get around the Hideo screen. Psycho Mantis truly is a boss fight that will never be done again. It makes his boss fight truly unique.

MGS is really a beast of it's own among the MG games, they never managed to recapture the magic of MGS in my opinion, almost every boss in MGS is memorable, i can barely remember the ones from any other game lol a beautiful plot as well that has never even come close to being matched not even by MGS3
MGS3 added some original magic of its own and actually came close (to me) but yeah.. MGS was… next level wow

@@evOJoC Because they're so different; whereas Psycho Mantis (adult in 2004) is expressive, wild and is tall and gangly, Tretij Rebenok (his child self in 1984) is entirely mute, doesn't display a personality due to being repressed by the wills/anger of other people, and is pretty short and almost adorable (which is why there's so much fanart of Mantis as a cute, adorable kid rather than his taller, hairless adult self).

@@JReed1985 That's actually pretty similar to Mantis' idealogy; as he describes, he sees through people's exterior personalities and only saw the selfish, instinctual desire to pass on what makes them them to other people (it's also how/why he makes Meryl go crazy over Snake 1:11 he's just bringing out her inner feelings for him).
Of course, don't take this as me saying you're evil or anything; I've had experience with people hiding their true natures and sinking to lows no animal would, so as messed up as it is Mantis' views are (at least partially) justified.

For example, there’s the case of a boss fight against Psycho Mantis, who could read Snake’s mind and predict his actions. The game’s intended solution was plugging the controller to a different port. He also could read the memory card (it was back in those days of PlayStation) and mock some games you played before based on game saves. It made players someone more than just holders of the controller.

This is what I hated most about the villains in MGS, you kill them only to find out they were just people who could have turned out totally differently with just a little bit of change in their past. Even at the end he said helping felt nice, makes me imagine what a good aligned Psycho Mantis would have been like and what he would have done with his powers.

every time I've played this game I've always noticed how incredible the animation is.
14:00, everything after 14:00 is nihilistic of Snake statement and pragmatic way of living. He likes to keep life as minimalist and as simple as possible. Of course as you continue to progress through the game, he starts become less nihilistic.

I will join you in the "want to give him a hug and kindness but don't want to die" club. He's not entirely in control of his actions so he may well just kill you. When I first saw him, I thought that he was a terrible individual until I defeated him and learned why he was driven to what he was....then I just felt really sad for him.

I wonder if the killer whose personality he took on had any preference for victims? If we knew that, maybe we could explore extra criteria for our theoretical survival or demise. I'm playing through MGS. I'll be honest I'm finding it pretty hard. I played MGS 3 and 2 with no issues but this one! I don't think the janky controls help much but every boss fight my progress grinds to a halt 😂. Where games simply harder back in the day?
The thing with Kojima is that I think he does that on purpose just to troll the gamer, although phantom pain have really good gameplay mechanics.

Ironmax 1492 You change player 1 to player 2 and he will not read your mind, meaning it’s gonna be much easier to beat him. I have it on PS3 so it’s even easier.
This may sound crazy, but imagine if Psycho Mantis was a woman. Hell, Mantis's physique even LOOKS rather feminine! I recently was looking at a fan casting of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie with Oscar Isaac, and the person posting it listed actress Tatiana Maslany as Psycho Mantis. This intrigued me, and I realized Mantis is one of those characters that potentially COULD have an interchangeable gender. To be honest, I found the idea of female Psycho Mantis kind of interesting. I played this game on PC, so Mantis couldn't predict my moves. He was pretty easy. You can duck under 90% of his attacks.
What if you use an emulator and you have an Xbox 360 controller for the PC is he able to read that because my controller shakes right after he says he can shake my controller

Ive been playing this on my PS classic (yes im one of the fools who actually bought one) and when the memory card thing happened i almost fuckin shut the game off. But in this older version he doesnt tamper with the screen of your tv and seem like the console disconnected I assume
