Exactly. And that matchup is just not fair to Geno. I mean, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are two of THE best-selling RPG franchises of all time, surpassed only by Pokémon, meaning that they both are juggernaut household names in the video game world. It would make more sense business wise for both Nintendo and Square Enix to pursue those franchises. Compared to THEM, what can a comparatively more niche character like Geno, who came from a one-off non-mainline game from the twilight years of the SNES, do?

It's kind of like how banjo kazooie has to rival master chief and Steve with Microsoft. Sure he's not as iconic or popular as those 2, but he has more ties to nintendo so he would make more sense to be in the nintendo fighter.

@@Sharpteeth32 Because Square and Nintendo execs had a huge fight when Square decided to make FF7 a Playstation exclusive shortly before SMRPG's release. Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi were both spiritual sequels, with the latter basically having the original creative team as Alpha Dream was all ex-Square guys.
Imagine if they added Mallow as a playable character, and add Geno as an assist trophy

Honestly Mallow makes more sense, he's not as liked, so he'd be a joke character like the plant or jigglypuff.
While Geno doesn't have that, he's to obscure, but he doesn't have his own franchise like Game and watch, but he's hyped, so his inclusion can't be used as a joke, like the plant.

I think one of the things that made Geno such a standout was that he resembled more of a Square Enix character. Mallow wouldn’t look out of place in the mainline Mario series, but Geno looks more like something out of Chrono Trigger.
I feel like geno is one of those characters a lot of people want in smash, but if they got him, would stop using him after a few days.
edit: i come back after five months, just to realize somehow this comment is my most popular, but i don't quite care. it is a little interesting to read some of the comments you guys left though, so I got bored and watched a playthrough of mario rpg since i didn't know anything about him until people mentioned him for smash. Geno i'd say is a likable character, but he's not really a character that would fit into smash in my opinion. The fact of the matter is that while some people would love him to be added and would main him, majority of smash players would maybe try him out and then quickly stop playing him. I got a friend who loves byleth since he's a fan of fire emblem, and i still find byleth a character that's enjoyable, but that's only because I already played FE characters like ike and roy. Every other friend I have hates byleth and thinks they're overpowered . The characters i'd like to see in smash are doomslayer and dante, but that's from before the memes, and I figured they'd probably be popular since their characters are iconic, but I also know they probably won't get added.

I'm gonna bet that Geno was a home-made/custom-made doll of the mushroom kid's OC... Which is also why he's the "most powerful" of the dolls. What little kid _wouldn't_ make their character an overpowered flawless hero?
Geno was a dark horse favorite because he is mysterious, charismatic, noble, and enigmatic.
He has no fleshed-out backstory. His appearance is that of a child's doll blown up to a near-adult size. His strength is not physical; his little toy body is full of the tremendous strength of its occupant's spirit. He is brave, kind, and humble. He is optimistic but resolute. He is nobody powerful or important where he comes from, but he serves the universe itself.
His presence in the party is a rescue mission of the stars on behald of the whole universe. He chooses the child's favorite toy because his belief makes it powerful, and he knows he'll need to fight in order to save the day. He sets out to engage Bowyer alone because he's super brave. He never loses sight of the party's uniting cause. Geno is a fantastic ally, who supports the player with style and grace, without ever being overwrought or too much. He's just a spectacular character.
In fans heart, yes. But NIntendo need to acknowledge it first.
At this point Mario has travelled with quite many diffferent partners, either recurring or temporary. So in NIntendo's mind they might just think Geno is merely one of them.

He's popular for the same reason that characters like Vegeta or Shadow the Hedgehog are. He's the "cool, mysterious, edgy" character that teenagers latch onto and neurodivergent manchildren fixate on well into adulthood. He's not some nuanced triumph of storytelling like you're making him out to be 🤣

The best Geno moment for me is right before you encounter Smithy, when he says, "And when the time comes..." and bows his head for a moment. It's the closest he comes to showing emotion, and only he knows what's going to happen. He's crossed continents, recovered stars, and gone on one side quest after another with these heroes, watched them have life-changing moments, and now on the cusp of the ultimate goal he knows the time is near when he has to say goodbye. And then he quickly comes back to the moment, and it's time to go kick Smithy's ass.
That is a good one. For me, nothing beats how he answers Bowyer asking who he is. He won't say, but he tells him the bottom line.
"I serve...a higher power. That star belongs to everyone!"
@@brettzforemanOne of my favorite moments from the game is when Mario jumps on Bowyer’s arrow right before it hits Geno. As a kid I loved how Mario and Mallow rushed towards Geno to help him, I thought it was epic.

A popular theory around the origins of Geno is that he actually works for Rosalina. Geno is a star being that serves a "higher authority". This authority could be the god-like Rosalina, making Geno a Luma or at least related to the Lumas. Mario RPG even has items that look awfully similar to Star Bits from Mario Galaxy as seen at 3:49. If this theory was true, it would then create interesting parallels to Pinocchio. If Geno is a living puppet like Pinocchio, then Rosalina is the Blue Fairy that gave the puppet life.

@@lightningcore4187 nah, wooden megaman with magic powers. Mega man has tech, geno has magic infused weaponry and turns himself into weapons, like a cannon to fire his actual self. If you've never watched/played through legend of the 7 stars, I'd recommend it. It's old school RPG fun.

I'm not sure of how successful it was compared to the mario RPG's ("paper mario" and "Mario and luigi") it birthed, but regardless it's important just for their start with the mario rpg formula. Geno was the most popular and "best" character in 7 stars so he gained traction pretty easily.
But tbh, Sephiroth deserved it, and Im glad he got in.
@@lightningcore4187 Geno can transform into a literal cannon fire the sun at targets, cause the sky to split open and rain fury on his enemies, fire an energy blast, boost his allies' atk & def, or kill anything normal mob and even some bosses in a single hit. And those are just his special skills.
The dude is a star person who descended from the heavens to single-handedly set the world right. Jesus, he's such a badass. Dude doesn't even afraid of Bowser.
To me it's the concepto of the character that buy him to us. He's literally the Toad kid's wishes coming real, and it's linked to one of our biggest desires we once had as kids: to see our own hero, one created by ourselves, one that own to us, taking life. It's something really personal and somewhat private, plus related to something that anyone did at least once like "make your own hero", and I'm sure that's the reason of why this character connected with such amount of people.
I see what you mean but, that's basically how every fan value their favorite character so that's not Geno's personal advantage or feature. In the end, Mario is the well-acknowledged hero for Mario series and it's hard to argue why Geno isn't in that seat.
To become actually accepted by everyone, Nintendo themselves need to push this character even harder for people to see him. That's the current target Geno has to meet now.
Geno would work extremely well in Smash. Even if he isn't super relevant anymore, it doesn't mean he still can't be in Smash. Super Mario RPG was the best selling RPG game before FF7 and was one of the internet's favorite game until the early 2010s. I don't want him because of nostalgia. I want him because he has an incredible moveset and if they added timed hit in, it would be so fun. I hope that one day they'll add him in Ultimate's sequel.
I mean why not? He can still be relevant with Mario games. If he is still active he may participate in not only Paper Mario but also many other different games like Mario Party.
To be honest it would be rather illogical to say Geno doesn't need to be in a new Mario RPG but needs to be in Smash bros instead, which priority should be reverse. Geno rather needs to be in Origami King more than Smash bros, if he is still part of the Mario world.

Geno isn't comparable to Banjo, tho, since he didn't build his own franchsie to be an independent rep. Geno's obstacle has always been having to compete against most other strong candidates from his series.

It’s like wahluigi, there’s no reason for geno or the wah to be so popular, just one common goal; get the them the hell into smash.
I think there is a handful of reasons but overall Mario RPG is nostalgic for fans who loved the game and he was the fan favorite of the game.
If you ever wanna see what Geno would have been like in Smash, the version of him in PMEX Remix is absolutely perfect, right down to giving his c-stick moves timed hits.

Besides, Geno is already a good aesthetic fit for Smash. What 'new shooting game' do you even want to add to Smash? We've got cartoon style shooting in Splatoon and its Inklings, anime style with Persona's Joker, modern photo-realism with Snake from MGS, overstylish shooting with Bayonetta, and space fantasy shooting thanks to Samus dating all the way back to Smash 64.

Smash is about franchise crossover so Geno isn't necessary at this point as Mario is represented.
If you want to go with unused franchises, there are sure tons of canddiates like Swapnote, Art Academy, Fashion Dreamer. Advance Wars and Golden Sun. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they don't have to compete in Smash.
If you mean by character individual then almost every single Nintendo character can compete because fighting is the very basic ability of all video game characters. Not like you talk like only Geno can fight among all Nintendo characters.
At the end of day Geno is only supported by Mario series fans, but Smash isn't only a fanservice for Mario series and it has added quite many Mario contents already. If Nintendo really want to take care of Mario series fans, they should just give Geno more game appearances in general games.

Thank you for a sorely needed laugh, considering I have bought every Advance Wars under the sun, including its spinoffs and several of its genre precursors all the way back to Military Madness and Vasteel. Beyond that, I don't recall dismissing any of the titles you mentioned, or even the ones that I mentioned.
But it's also because I have played these games that I recognize just how ill suited many of them are to integration with Smash's core gameplay loop. I love Andy and think he's a lovable goof but he's ill suited to being properly represented in a setting like Smash.
Also, in case you missed the critical detail, Geno is owned by Square, not Nintendo; he just has Mario-adjacent aesthetics. Nintendo is not to blame for his lack of appearances, Square is. That said, I certainly wouldn't be against a few more representatives from that company from a time when Square and Nintendo would actually work together, such as characters from Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, or even possibilities such as classic Breath of Fire or Live A Live (considering its HD-2D remake in 2022).
With that in mind, Geno just happens to fit into multiple spaces as:
1) a Square representative
2) from the 16 bit Super NES era where they used to collaborate
3) with an existing representation suited to being in a platform fighter

As I said Geno is a Mario franchsie character, and the remake makes it even much more clear. Comapny acquisition isn't really a point for franchsie classification.
If NIntendo do nominate other new franchise reps, any of them can win over Geno easily. So in the end Geno can only rely on a new Mario slot to get in.

I agree with your reasons that nostalgia and that Geno being cool as he is are valid enough for him to be considered for Smash; but, also, I do think there are a lot more:
1. His moveset potential. It's astronomical. Not only all of the moves from Mario Rpg could be easily represented in Smash via the B button combinations and tilts and power attacks, but let's not forget that Mario Rpg shines on its timing to deal more powerful and precise attacks. Sakurai's all for that. He has said again and again that a character is added not due to relevance alone, but because of how unique his playstyle could be.
2. Mario Rpg alone. The game is important to both Nintendo and to Square: the latter couldn't achieve what the former had been doing for so long: being popular in the West; while the former benefited from having its eponymous character featured on a genre that not even themselves had brought successfully here, the Rpg. Remember that Fire Emblem was a pretty obscure franchise on its onset, and thanks to Marth's and Roy's inclusion in Melee, the franchise picked westerners' curiosity. So, Mario Rpg is important in videogame history for that fact alone and Geno could be considered tha main protagonist alongside Mario.
3. In addition to the later, I do think that Mario Rpg is more Geno's story than Mario's, as the fate is not merely to rescue Princess Peach, but to fix the very core of what make wishes come true. As such, it's a crucial event in The Mushroom Kingdom history. Geno is popular because his character is a vast expansion on the lore of the Mario universe, and I think few games have truly delved into that.
4. As you pointed out, Geno is mysterious and enigmatic. Almost a kind of incognito type of hero. We recognize its doll form, but, what does he really look like? How does Gaz know the Geno doll before the Geno spirit actually came down to our world? If so, on who is based the Geno doll in the first place to actually be sold as a doll to a kid? Those are deep questions.
And there are more reasons, as a bonus:
4. Geno is important to Smash history alone. Many gaming icons are as well, and many are already included in the game, the most recent being Steve and company from Minecraft. But, really, aside from Ridley, who comes from the Nes era, and Banjo, who is representative from the N64 era, and Ryu/Terry, who are legends from the fightning genre, which other truly retro DLC character has been added in? Most of the DLC characters added so far are pretty recent. That's why we need Geno. He represents extremely well the Snes Rpg era, which was itself made out of gold, retro games and the biggest and most daring collaboration Nintendo and Square had ever worked together.

I love Geno as a character, but ultimatel I don't think Nintendo openly agree that Geno is important to their history or the Mario franchise, because if so it'd be wrong for them to root for other characters instead. As a fact, they've not been maknig him return to any recent Mario game or even the animation movie.
If they really want to make Geno relevant and impotant again, they should just push him to show in more new games and promotion.

Besides, Geno is from Mario which means he wouldn't be a good DLC choice. DLCs are better from brand new series and franchises since Smash bros is about franchise crossover, and Geno is just part of the Mario universe.
And if Geno can be DLC, he should be added to Mario Kart TOur first.

Same. The game came out in 1996 and people my age grew up with the xbox/ps3
I feel that it's the opposite, because from what I've seen most people who like Geno are much older people and 90s kids, or even people who played the virtual console during the wii days, which is why he was so popular during brawl, meanwhile most people nowadays who are younger don't understand why he's so popular and just ride him off as an obscure character without actually playing the game.

I honestly dont feel like Geno would be added but mainly because I personally feel if a character is mainly just relevent through smash discussion, they wouldnt really make a good candidate for smash. even if moveset potential is there i think at this point its safe to say most video game characters would have moveset potential for smash, and even if sakurai wanted him in the past, i feel like that being a main reason why he should get in when characters sakurai previously denied got in first. and plus im not sure how much of the smash community at large would actually like if he did get in. obviously there are a bunch of people here saying they would love it but this is a video about wanting geno for smash, so its going to attract people who want geno for smash

I loved Mario RPG. Was my first RPG ever, filled my childhood with so much fun. But I always dropped Geno for bowser so I never really grew attached.
I think the main reason I don’t care if Geno gets in is just that he’s too obscure. I haven’t seen a video on TH-cam that mentions him in a discussion that doesn’t include Smash Bros.. Even Mario RPG videos don’t mention him.
Banjo is the most obscure character in the DLC list and his last game was in 2009. Geno appeared once on the SNES.
Agreed, lets be honest Geno isn't that popular, he only appeared in one game over 20 years ago and hasn't been featured in anything ever since (aside from a cameo... 15 years ago) Both Nintendo and Square haven't done anything not only with Geno but the whole Mario RPG cast.

The negativity is from jealous people who can’t accept that he has a bigger fanbase than their character and the more relevant mario characters. I’d pay no attention to them. They complain that there character doesn’t get big roles in other games or don’t make it in etc. It they never do anything about it.
Geno fans have stuck with their character ever since mario RPG released and they’ve been willing to do anything to see their character be playable again. Something a lot of character fan bases could learn from.

Geno is only popular because in the early 2000's a handful of obssessive NewGrounds twats wouldn't stop over hyping him in all their animations and then people just kept bandwagoning from then on. Most people that claim to want Geno in smash have never even played the ONE game hes from.

As long as geno is owned by Square Enix he will never be in smash. Every time Square Enix gets the opportunity to add a new rep to smash they will never consider geno over a character from one of there own franchises. Why would Square Enix want to advertise a competitors game over there own games, that's bad for business.

After playing the game for the first time through the remake. I totally understand the hype for Geno. However, I feel like Mallow is a bit overlooked, so I hope they both make it to the next Smash
Use that logic every single main character is overlooked. When you say this you might also overlook all other main characters who partcipate in Mario's major games.
I think it's more correct to say that NIntendo overlook both Geno and Mallow since they should had been in more new games instead of their only original game.

There is a rumour that Mario rpg is getting a from the ground up remake and will be announced this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Geno was also then announced after/before the reveal.

Well with the death of Alphadream and Paper Mario doing new stuff because the staff only wants to make new games, this rumor doesn’t sounds that dumb actually.
Problem is Geno is already absent from all recent Mario games. Even if there is no remake, Nintendo can just make him appear in Mario Kart TOur.

I have never played a Mario game ever, except that one time at a friend's BirthDay, but I am madly in love with doll-puppet-construct-golem-robot kind of characters. It's probably the joints and the fact that they are made of some material, but I just gravitate towards them. I have heard of Geno, I know the memes, but until some comparisons to Red from Everhood, I never really looked into this guy.
And now I just hope I don't get attached to him. ":-)

I'm a geno fan but I don't have a strong connection to mario rpg I would argue my strongest nostalgia for a mario rpg is super paper mario. so my reason for wanting geno is that his moveset in mario rpg conceptually transfer well to a platform fighter. tf2 characters also could make the leap with minimal issue too I believe. a great example of geno as a platform fighting character is by chmmr for the rivals of aether workshop.
I personally think geno would opperate best as a high offense but high precision character like wolf without laser or sonic with out spin dash. geno would have ok defense and mobility but without any good burst options or aerial agility similar to luigi's predictable recovery. geno's gameplay would revolve around good spacing with projectiles without area denial and have action commands as the main gimmick. Geno would excel at range, movement, and kills. but struggle with combos, ledge trapping, and recovery. Geno would thrive at medium range and struggle with close range the most. the goal of geno's playstyle is to attack the enemy in the right place at the right time without conditioning. a good strategy is to get the spacing you need and then attack where the enemy will be next. different attacks have different ranges.

I think one of the contradiction is consider that Super Mario's core is platform action, why not make Geno playable in some different Mario platformer first, like Super Mario Wonder?
@Doracake yeah why not. I don't think it would be necessary to make geno work in a platformer first. the smash roster is already full of characters that are from a variety of genres. I think the design of smash games when it comes to movesets and character stats is based on the characters personality and features more than anything else. that's part of why gannondorf's design is still so antithetical to his first appearance in ocarina of time. if it were accurate he'd be floaty instead of weighty. this is a tanget but also take notice of how out of all the super heavy weights he has no unique gimmick mechanics.
how this concept translates to geno is that in mario rpg geno is the fastest hardest hitting character in the party. he could have that strategy translate to smash bros. geno also has an unusual ability to jump really high in mario rpg when he uses geno beam. so he's not sluggish like many magic uses in smash. I think for his stats and strategy he's decently fast both on the ground and in the air. using his multiple direct projectiles to ko enemies. his gimmick is that missed projectiles cause much longer end lag and he can use timed hits like in mario rpg. his weakness is that you can't just wall enemies out with geno he's a zoner not keep away strategy you have to make your shots count by ensuring they wont miss. in a sort of combo heavy bait and punish hybrid who excels in snipes. compared to currently existing smash bros characters it would be like playing young link or fox most, or at least that's the intention of this design.

The point is he is from Mario, as a main character you're supposed to participate in all subjects, especially platformer adventure which is the core of the franchise. Otherwise it makes sense why other more active main characters have higher priority for series mascot in Nintendo's eyes. If Nintendo don't even want to use you often whey would they even try to regard you as Mario series mascot.
Like you cannot say you have the right to be in a president election even if you have not political experience. Politicians with actual political experience are supposed to be more competent than you.

I think I get what you're saying about geno's inclusion the same argument is true for waluigi I feel they aren't in because they aren't main series mario or haven't been in a platformer. in my main comment I was trying to claim why geno would make a good fighter if included, not a campaign to justify his inclusion.
though if you do want my thoughts on that it's: I agree it would be unlikely not only is geno a spin off series character only, but he also appears in only two games which is less than waluigi, and technically half owned by square enix since square made the game. So getting cloud was hopeful, getting sephiroth was hype, getting sora was mid except that he's half owned by disney, and the chances were dead as soon as he became a mii character, and in the water assuming ultimate really will be the last game in the series or at least by sakurai.
Though there is some possibility that if there is a new smash game and this is speculation but nintendo might actually rework the whole cast. Reason I think this possible is that over the history of smash sakurai has a few habits in character design.
the first is broken characters always have their strategy changed in the sequel
the second is heavy characters are always slow at multiple things
the third is change veteran characters as little as possible
so maybe nintendo will give us cannon gannon but unlikely.

If you are really interested with Mario lore and watch details closely you'll end finding that the star that inhabitate the Geno puppet is just like the one in Mario & Luigi bowser inside story or in dream team bros , yup it's star spirit , also similar to the one in the first paper mario but different world so doesnt work

i Dorayaki Geno is a highly requested character for super smash bros. He had a mii fighter costume with a splash screen back in Smash 4 where no other costume had it. Other characters who had mii fighter costumes in Smash 4 include Inkling and King K. Rool, and they both got in. Geno has also been acknowledged by Sakurai in an interview where he said that Geno would’ve been a great addition to SSBB, but he didn’t elaborate on why he wasn’t included. Min Min breaking the spirits deconfirm rule allowed many characters to have a chance again, including Geno, of course, but also characters like Shantae and Rayman. Geno has been the centre of many recent leaks and has done extremely well in fan polls, usually placing as one of, if not the most popular character. In Super Mario RPG, there’s a couple of 7s. “Legend of the seven stars,” seven star pieces, etc. The next fighter announced would not only be the seventh dlc fighter, but the 77th fighter in total. This suggests that Geno will join. There’s probably more you could find by watching videos and doing research, but that’s all I could think of off the top of my head

Geno always reminded me of Hiei fron Yu Yu Hakusho, except that he kind of has Cyborg 004's cool and calculating persona (and his machine gun hand, too.). Let's not forget he also has Mazinger Z's rocket punch. In other words, the character is an ode to old-school badasses.

He wouldn’t make sense As a Business Choice, Because why waste time trying to Get a side Character From a Game from A really old era from a Single Game, if you notice a trend With the characters that are used as DLC there all from games That Have been Around for years And have more titles than Super Mario RPG. Their major issue is Mario got too many fighters in Smash, thus fans of other franchises have the proper reason to oppose their entry, same for Toad and Birdo.
The best option would of course be some brand new franchises where characters have very unique fighting styles.

I’ve had a few experiences in deep meditation and some dreams where I saw the Mario rpg characters plus more that weren’t actually in the game. I saw areas that weren’t in the game either. Same graphics. It made me think maybe I was peeking into another reality where the story continued and the characters had to fight off more evil! When you think that we could potentially be living in an endless multiverse, it makes sense that out there, somewhere, all of our fantasy stories have a reality of their own…

I don't think so? Unlike other discontinued series, Mario got several news games per year and there was Mario Kart Tour. If they want to put Geno in a modern game there have been quite many chances to do so.
The remake is a good news for people to know the origin of Mario rpgs as well as Geno's character. But at this point Geno needs to star in a brand new game to prove that he still exists in the current Mario world.

Geno is the "face" of Super Mario RPG itself. The game begins with the breaking of the Star Road and ends with its reparation; that was HIS mission, Mario and Co. are just along for the ride. His style and design, like the game, are a perfect blend of Nintendo and Square sensibilities - a star inhabiting a toy of a cool gun-wielding wizard. So anyone who played the game and enjoyed it (and who didn't?) had a good chance of being a Geno fan specifically.

He has a few special attacks from Super Mario RPG like Geno whirl which could act like G&Ws hammer, since there’s a chance it deals 9999 damage. Geno boost could act like shulks manado arts boosting different abilities. Lastly, his Geno blast would be a cool ranged attack and Geno flash would be a cool final smash. So at his core he is a gunner, but his light weight and other abilities would make him cool imo
