"In this game you will fight for control of a planet." "Eh, been there done that." "And you and your armies will be seemingly dressed by Jean Paul-Gaultier." "Mon dieu, sign me up!" I love this game dearly. Had both the Amiga non-speech version and the PC CD-Rom. In a way, it plays out like a future alternate history to the events in Dune, where there was no great betrayal planned by the Emperor and the Baron, and you could legitimately contest the planet. There are oddities, like poor old legendary warrior Duncan Idaho reduced to being space-accountant with a Centauri haircut, and yes the flying can get repetitive, but overall I loved how it gave me such a strong sense of Dune (big fan) but at the same time wove a different story so you never felt like you were simply checking boxes. I really got caught up in the atmosphere, the art design... and wow - THAT soundtrack. Great review, you got a subscriber! Always felt sorry for Paul being saddled with 'white privilege' accusations though. His coming of age test involves intense pain and probable death, his only friends are old men tring to teach him to kill or be a super-computer and somebody is trying to kill him almost every minute of his life. Add the death of most people he knows, terrifying visions, feelings of guilt over things he does in the FUTURE add up to a poor young git I wouldn't swap places with for a second. Also with Paul virtually adopted by the Fremen as a freakish super-human to lead them on a galactic jihad, the whole 'white saviour from a paternal empire' thing becomes something of a sardonic bleak joke too, which is part why I enjoy the book so much. And also because Guerney rocks. Thanks again - you're a pithy, fun, reviewer and I'm going to dig this game out again!

If you are into seedy cold war politics and don't mind graphic adventures where your actions could get you murdered then Cryo made another fantastic game around the same time called KGB. Play that game for 15 mins and you will be drawn straight into 1980's Moscow, the UI is identical to Dune but without the strategy bits, this is a pure graphic adventure but with adult puzzles like escaping a freezer full of corpses or finding a means to get someone to confess to something and recording it at the same time. The Dig was my first Lucasarts adventure game. It has quite the production backstory; from Spielberg movie pitch, to Amazing Stories, to adventure game and book release by Alan Dean Foster. Actually it would be great to see you showing off your Lucasarts collection like you did with SegaCD recently.
I see 'The Dig' by EA on your bookshelf. I was curious about that game. I did not have a PC back then. I wanted one so badly. Diablo 2 online was the grail game of all time.
Paul actually looked different in the demo for the game, but was changed to more closely resemble his movie counterpart shortly before release. You can even still make out the old Paul design in some scenes. Feyd, weirdly, looked more like Sting in the demo.
Discovering your chan thanks to this video, this game is such part of my life. I have so many memories exploring it on my Amiga 500 during my preparatory school back in spring 1993 - French way to say you will suffer for a couple of years until the meritocracy will choose you-. I simply remember going into the desert alongside Chani for the very first time or riding a sandworm or seeding just below the Harkonnen, it was amazing. An it was a couple of years before I finally discovered how incredible the Dune universe was when I read all the books and finished my Master of Engineering at that time. Yeah it was 1997-98. What a couple of years in term of gaming but still Dune was/is Dune, its music will always be by my side, like FF7 or Starcraft's one. Love your takes on the matter and the way you underline its limitation. Cheers

My favourite part about this game’s story is how it kills off Leto. Because the Atreides suffer no major losses in this version, Leto just ends up throwing a tantrum after a (nuisance) Harkonnen attack and charges their main base in an ornithopter on his own for no reason and dies off screen. It’s almost brilliant in it’s hilarity.
i played this on DOS back in the early to mid 90's and i absolutely loved it. i remember drawing out and labeling the world map on paper (that's how into it i was). anyways, was really engrossing at the time. i tried playing it again much much later on and the combat strategy aspect seemed more difficult than i had recalled.
Was watching a Linus Tech Tips video on Dosbox, which got me thinking about this game and how much I loved playing it as a kid. I beat the CD version last year and I felt engaged and immersed the entire time. Classic games will do that to you!
Thats great! And very underated. One good reason to have a Sega CD. I remember being amazed by the review in the magazines at the time. Thanks for the nostalgia.
What a great video! Very in-depth and entertaining, never heard of the game, or the novels for that matter, but now I'm hooked, let's just say that spice is, indeed, a powerful "resource"
Sweet! Was waiting for this one. Glad you liked it. Its definitely unique. I'm really looking forward to Villeneuves adaptation next year. I feel like he will explore the themes in the books more thoroughly. I definitely see this getting a surge of views when that releases. Thanks for another great vid.
Hello from Russia and thank you for another great review. Dune is my favorite book of all time and i played all games based on it. People mostly talk about strategy games from Westwood Studios, and rarely mention this one. Finally somebody covered it. I like your style - short and simple but informative, covering the basics and leaving nuances and deep things to discover for those new who will be interested in the game. Keep up the good work, will be waiting your next video.
Stephane Picq ... A great composer who uses the sound card to it's full potential to deliver an experience not attainable by using simple instruments. Try the soundtrack of Mega Race as well. On top of that, he's a really friendly guy.

Completed this finally during lockdown (first time in 30 years of playing). After playing on the Amiga (my first big box game) first, then PC CD both during the 90s. I have had it on a Unix handheld playing the MegaCd Version. I’ve had this running through dosbox more recently. Probably my all time favourite point and click adventure RPG. Wish there was an HD remake. Interestingly I completed this over Steamlink on my iPhone (took some setting up but was worth it). Was really nice playing dune with touch/mouse mode. This game would be great as a mobile app.
Love this video. Having just completed the whole series (and re-read the original novel), I particularly enjoyed the game's subtle references to the literary works, such as Harrah mentioning that her husband Jamis had just been killed in a duel with "some boy," hah. Though I'll be honest, I never really noticed the lack of the Bene Gesserit in the game (which I've only played in spurts across the years, in my defense). Duncan Idaho looking like a Centauri from Babylon 5 shook me though, haha. (Also, THANK YOU for pronouncing Chani's name "Ch-AHN-ee." I've been listening to part of the series on audiobook, and they always pronounce her name as "Ch-AY-nee," like Dick Cheney; it drives me slightly mad every single time....) Ahem, anyway, well done, well done.

What an excellent video about a fascinating game! It seems so complex and rough around the edges, which I suppose is something to expect out of a game on the Sega CD
This was my first RTS experience and played a lot of the MS-DOS version when I was in my teens on my 486 sx25. There were some IRQ settings for my soundblaster when setup just right, you would get a voiced intro. Great memories! Not so great on the Genesis as you could only select one unit at a time if I'm not mistaken. I hope the new DUNE movie is good, I wasn't crazy about the movie that was made in the early 80's.
I hope this channel gets some traction. The reviews are good, the language is clean, the humour is just right and you're a legit gamer girl. Best of luck.
You got that right about complex themes. I've never played the games any but there is so much to cover in the Canon. My Pappy was a fan of the Books with Frank Herbert and even the newer ones, apparently people that were working on Blade Runner 2049 & Prometheus are in charge of the 2020 Dune Movie release.
Fantastic review as per usual Pam. I can't express how much I love your content. You always cover games that need the attention. I'd love to hear you talk about the Journeyman Project Turbo some time. I love point and click games like this, surprisingly I've never played this one, despite my love of the novels and RTS games. I'll have to give it a shot soon! Thanks, and keep up the great work!
never played that one, but spent a lot of time on westwood's dune 2 back in the day. thanks for the history lesson. btw. i might have always found your narrating voice to be very pleasant and soothing, but noticed it especially in this video (whispering aside).
Great game and great video. The visuals of flying, and the music were lovely. There was a Dune game for one of the playstations that was a dodgy third person shooter!
Thanks for showing this one off Pam! I only became aware of this game a couple years ago but I added it to my collection as soon as I could. There is so little on TH-cam about it. Seeing this game in action reminds me a bit of Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon. It really makes me wonder why Cinemaware didn't jump some of their Amiga games over to the SegaCD like several other companies did (Dune, Flink, Chuck Rock, etc). What is it with SegaCD games and time constraints anyways? Lol. The editing on this video was awesome btw, and you were totally rocking a Fremen look in the thumbnail!
I played dune 2000 and it was really fun, fast, simple concept, but the mammoth tanks and sonic wave tanks are so cool. The engineers that can take over buildings. unfortunately back in the days we had to pay per minute with modem and it was pretty expensive to play online. Simple 2d isometric strategy games are awesome.
oh gosh, another fantastic review. thank you for doing this game. as others have mentioned, i see you have the dig on your shelf there, if you haven't already, i absolutely recommend playing it and doing a review of it. it's a game that touches on subjects that /very/ few games will ever try and talk about. it's absolutely the sort of thing where, as a younger player, you're roped in by the visuals and then, as a much older player, you see the depth and nuance in it's storytelling and are floored. i cannot recommend it enough [and i think you'd appreciate it's ideas and themes.]
You should definitely make this a mini series, Dune 2, 2000, and Emperor battle for Dune are all spectacular forays into the RTS world, with 2 laying the foundations of rts's for years to come, and Emperor being one of the earliest, if not the first fully 3d entries into the genre.
Ah, those Sega CD travel transition scenes are so... 90s! Reminds me of the Thomas Dolby "Mind's Eye" 3D films that were released way back then. Ah, those designs... Great video and critique on that colonialism the film kinda glances over. Cheers!

Great review. Really well done, how thorough you look at the book, the movie, their themes and how the game attempts to do them justice in the unusual genre mix with its quirky design choices, nice pixel art and cd music. This game surely is underrated and not appreciated enough, probably bc of Westwood's Dune 2. We can definitely see that the 2021 Dune production design guys took a longer look not only at the David Lynch movie but also at its secondary descendants, ie video games.

One of my favourite games, played to the end on my Amiga 600 back in 1993. Was a little kid, didn’t know about the book and movie, still an awesome game. Love the Dune universe. First time seeing your channel, great review, thanks for the memory lane 😊🙏🏻
This channel is refreshing. Nice to see some good ol' fashion PC games being covered instead of copying the same games that everyone and their mom is talking about or Switch crap. 👍🏽
1.) Find someone who looks at you the way Chani looks at Paul? 2.) "I wouldn't want to ride sandworms through the desert like a snow board." "...Or would I?" Yes! Yes, you would!
I was listening to Mr Slim just last night. This is a fascinating approach to the Dune universe in that it is probably closest to interactive reading. I would think an FPS, or mmorpg even, would not be able to communicate the feel and vibe of Dune.
Cannot be Tamed I have only played Dune 2 on the Genesis(if you have played command and conquer it is identical to that, the precursor of that series), which was a highly addictive game due to being able to play as 3 houses with very different styles. The Sega CD game passed me by, but you have piqued my interest in it now.
Great review Pam . Dune is one of those movies I tried watching while back it was kind a late at night and I fell asleep , I still need to see it. The game sounds interesting and a lot more simplistic then the movie itself. I came to this video because you mentioned it on Twitter😏😁. Keep up the great work !
Read the book first, the movie is pretty much incomprehensible without it. Even the book alone is extremely complex-you will need to read more than enough passages multiple times before grasping the meaning and even that will sometimes not be enough. It is very addictive though; just hang in there through the couple of opening chapters (which throw a ton of exposition your way) and you won't be able to put it down.
the first dune game is ok, if like that style of game, but the westwood rts games are my top favorite games of all time. i remember playing the first dune 2 and going through mice just due to playing so much. then 2000 i played of windows pc and ps1 till i beat the games with all 3 factions. just ashame the all support dropped for the dune series from westwood when sifi got the dune rights and made that crappy version of dune.

Your review makes me want to read the book and the movie! Also, I think both look good but I think the dunes look prettier on the Sega CD then on PC
For sure, I don’t know why they didn’t make them nicer on PC
Felicity loved the 1984 movie it’s great 🦈
complete with gulf war style NVG war footage
Nice video, hidden gem this one. Make a The Dig (from lucas arts) review when you have the
time.
Cheers from Brazil!!!
I will put The Dig on my list.
Cannot be Tamed I see it in the background on the shelf! Unless I am wrong?
The Dig was my first Lucasarts adventure game. It has quite the production backstory; from Spielberg movie pitch, to Amazing Stories, to adventure game and book release by Alan Dean Foster.
Actually it would be great to see you showing off your Lucasarts collection like you did with SegaCD recently.
@@lonesquiff6551 The Dig was my first adventure game, i remember playing with my mother until dawn and drinking coffee and tea, very nice memories.
thumbing this up more so it gains traction as a comment.
the dig is a fantastic game.
I see 'The Dig' by EA on your bookshelf. I was curious about that game. I did not have a PC back then. I wanted one so badly. Diablo 2 online was the grail game of all time.
I have a mini documentary on the Dig you should watch
Ronald Brow just saw her of the dig it was interesting 🧐
Paul actually looked different in the demo for the game, but was changed to more closely resemble his movie counterpart shortly before release. You can even still make out the old Paul design in some scenes. Feyd, weirdly, looked more like Sting in the demo.
Cool video, I like seeing the differences between versions.
Cheers

Great video ! Games looks very interesting, I never played it. I started with Dune 2 which made me fall in love with the RTS genre :)
Wow cool, what a great channel to properly look back at this classic game.
Thanks for the great review.
Also thanks for the music video clip at the end. Love that song and the video and it's random reference to Dune
I've had that song in my head for the whole time I wrote the script, so I had to use it
@@Cannotbetamed1 it's great! I'm glad you did.
Awesome video. One of my favourite games of all time
Thanks
Oh God this brought back soon many good memories.....it took me sooooo long to beat this game. And also a dune fan as well.
"oh my God... ATOMICS!"
Was watching a Linus Tech Tips video on Dosbox, which got me thinking about this game and how much I loved playing it as a kid.
I beat the CD version last year and I felt engaged and immersed the entire time. Classic games will do that to you!
The good ones will
Thats great! And very underated. One good reason to have a Sega CD. I remember being amazed by the review in the magazines at the time. Thanks for the nostalgia.
No problem :)
What I wouldn't give to see a modern day Dune game. The potential for a fantastic RPG is just sitting and waiting to be noticed.
I think the new movie may spawn some new attempts at making games based on the series.
I suppose one can always dream, I look forward to more of your vids.@@Cannotbetamed1
Love this game. It rarely gets talked about, and any Dune video is a good video. :)
Hey, thanks!
What a great video! Very in-depth and entertaining, never heard of the game, or the novels for that matter, but now I'm hooked, let's just say that spice is, indeed, a powerful "resource"
Thank you!
Great review! This game looks impressively ambitious. Love the Fremen-blue eyeshadow you rocked, very appropriate!
Thank you :) I'm glad someone noticed
@@Cannotbetamed1 I actually thought you made your eyes glow blue in the thumbnail! Great job!
Sweet! Was waiting for this one. Glad you liked it. Its definitely unique. I'm really looking forward to Villeneuves adaptation next year. I feel like he will explore the themes in the books more thoroughly.
I definitely see this getting a surge of views when that releases.
Thanks for another great vid.
I'm also looking forward to seeing Villeneuve's take on it, I think he'll do well. A view surge would be nice :)
The books are absolutely amazing.
I loved dune 2 as a young teen and I am now replaying it on my Evercade. 🙂
Hello! And thank you
I absolutely love the soundtrack to this game :-)
Stephane Picq ... A great composer who uses the sound card to it's full potential to deliver an experience not attainable by using simple instruments. Try the soundtrack of Mega Race as well. On top of that, he's a really friendly guy.

Enjoyed the comedy in this video. Definitely one of your better reviews.
Thanks!
Could this be the one? haha, that caught me off guard.. Nice vid
Thanks
@@Cannotbetamed1 This was an amazing review of an awesome game. I remember playing this in 1992 . Thanks so much !!!
Certainly the one that isn't an rts! :)
Thanks!
This game was one of the first games I ever completed. Even today I launch it sometimes to satisfy my nostalgia.
I play through it every few years. I still love it

What an excellent video about a fascinating game! It seems so complex and rough around the edges, which I suppose is something to expect out of a game on the Sega CD
It’s not that rough around the edges. And it was on computers first.
4:46 Well i mean you cant blame her, he is the messiah of her people and he is also a prince :D
I hope the new movie is good too! I don't mind Lynch's version as a movie, but it's not a great adaptation.
I hope this channel gets some traction. The reviews are good, the language is clean, the humour is just right and you're a legit gamer girl. Best of luck.
Thank you! The channel has gotten a bit of extra attention recently which I’m pretty happy about.
How is it that only one youtuber has closely looked at this game?
This is the best game of that era.
Edit: sega version
More people have looked at this game.
New subscriber, I love your vids, looking forward to viewing old and new ones!
Thanks, welcome to the channel
You got that right about complex themes. I've never played the games any but there is so much to cover in the Canon. My Pappy was a fan of the Books with Frank Herbert and even the newer ones, apparently people that were working on Blade Runner 2049 & Prometheus are in charge of the 2020 Dune Movie release.
Cool review Pam. I've never played this but the minute I saw the character portraits it reminded me of Cryo's KGB game.
YES !!! They are made by the same company. Both great games
@@slappingvegans7940 I'm not well versed in the history of that time so the plot confused me haha. And so many characters to meet.
This is one of those games I always wanted to play on Sega CD but just still haven't gotten around to. I always thought it looked pretty sweet.
Great job, Pam~
Fantastic review as per usual Pam. I can't express how much I love your content. You always cover games that need the attention. I'd love to hear you talk about the Journeyman Project Turbo some time. I love point and click games like this, surprisingly I've never played this one, despite my love of the novels and RTS games. I'll have to give it a shot soon! Thanks, and keep up the great work!
I had never heard of Journeyman Project Zero, I’ll have to look into it. And thank you :)
@@Cannotbetamed1 Turbo, but damn, Zero would be cool too, like if they reimagined the first game :)
never played that one, but spent a lot of time on westwood's dune 2 back in the day. thanks for the history lesson. btw. i might have always found your narrating voice to be very pleasant and soothing, but noticed it especially in this video (whispering aside).
Thank you, I always used to be self conscious about my voice but I'm glad it's soothing
Thank you!
I really like the Dig, it’s on the list for a review at some point
that is awesome to hear.
very much looking forward to your take on it.
One of my all time favorite games. I never tried planting trees right up next to the Harkonnen fortresses. Thanks for the tips!
No problem!
You should definitely make this a mini series, Dune 2, 2000, and Emperor battle for Dune are all spectacular forays into the RTS world, with 2 laying the foundations of rts's for years to come, and Emperor being one of the earliest, if not the first fully 3d entries into the genre.
Did you just try to look at my sandworm?🐙
Love this video! Have always been very curious about Dune. Still intimidated by the books but happy to know more about the games!
Thanks! The books are intimidating, I've never read past the first one.
Ah, those Sega CD travel transition scenes are so... 90s! Reminds me of the Thomas Dolby "Mind's Eye" 3D films that were released way back then. Ah, those designs...
Great video and critique on that colonialism the film kinda glances over. Cheers!
Eye, eye, eye, eye. Lol

Hi Pam! Great review! It explains in details how this strategy game works and how it relates to the movie and book. Also nice hair!😙
Thank you!
I somehow totally missed this review, maybe it was from a touch before I was following yet. In any case, wonderful review of a game I had no idea existed. It's wild this got made to begin with.
It’s a really cool game
Great review. Really well done, how thorough you look at the book, the movie, their themes and how the game attempts to do them justice in the unusual genre mix with its quirky design choices, nice pixel art and cd music. This game surely is underrated and not appreciated enough, probably bc of Westwood's Dune 2.
We can definitely see that the 2021 Dune production design guys took a longer look not only at the David Lynch movie but also at its secondary descendants, ie video games.

2.) "I wouldn't want to ride sandworms through the desert like a snow board."

Yes! Yes, you would!
It would probably be pretty fun.
How nice! I'm reading Dune over the weekend so this is a happy coincidence. I may give this game a try :)
That is a nice coincidence
I was listening to Mr Slim just last night.
This is a fascinating approach to the Dune universe in that it is probably closest to interactive reading. I would think an FPS, or mmorpg even, would not be able to communicate the feel and vibe of Dune.
I haven't played the other games, but I would assume that this game brought the story to life more than the RTS's
Nice video again.😊 Dune was a great game, indeed. I think Dune were later on my first RTS game. Had a great time with it.

Thanks!
One of my all time favorite games of all time! Freaking amazing!! Where is the GoG version?!!
