  • Loom is one of the most beautiful stories that LucasArts Games has produced, telling the story of a young Weaver named Bobbin Threadbare, Chaos, and the Great Loom. This is the story of the game and its development. Warning: I will be spoiling everything from this 30 year old game.

    Wow.
That's a good 'about' video of Loom.
The game made a huge impression on me as a kid. Especially since it appealed to the musical side.
The CGA graphics was fantastic and the evil force appearing in the last part of the game made a huge impression on me.
I think Loom was a perfect game. Most other point-and-click games at the time were too difficult for any kid without help.
Loom was a story that you could go through without being stuck in complexity, wishing that you could just look it up on internet that did not yet exist.
    Thank you again!

From the moment I heard that enchanting opening music, LOOM took hold of me and never let go. It was nearly 30 years ago, and I still remember being a child, whisked away into that magical realm.
You have a wonderful way of communicating just how epic and detailed the LOOM universe really was, yet how little we really got to see. The grandeur of this game's plot and environment still stays with me today! It is so sad that LucasFilm/Arts had this tradition of seeing the original storytellers move along, and the sequels either don't get made, or go into alternate 'non-canon' storylines like Monkey Island 3.
Thank you again for this great video - A wonderful, soulful, sorrowful, epic, blast from the past!

Complete the adventure in difficult mode, and you will see a cutscene in which Bobbyn unveils his true face under the weaver's hood.... By the way, that makes perfect sense with the ending... That I can so clearly remember the handful of days I spent playing this as an 11 year old, over 30 years ago(!) is testament to this game’s transportive storytelling powers. Looking back now some of its DNA lives on in ‘walking simulators’ like SOMA, in that the puzzles aren’t too challenging, and that the emphasis is on telling a story. Truly a unique experience all these years on, the highest accolade a team of creators could aspire to, particularly is this space. Great vid!

You know what's awesome in this game? Moriarty took time to take in account if players REVERSE the spell they just did. For instance: When you get to the spiral staircase, you have to reverse the Twist spell to unravel it. IF you want for *no reason*, you can do the spell normally, and re-twist.
They actually TOOK THE TIME to program that in, in case the player just wanted to do it. They could have easily said "nah just let Bobbin say there is no reason to do that."
Same thing with gold into straw. You can reverse it, and turn the straw back into gold. (For literally no reason, when you are with the Dragon.)

    • @arturoaguilar6002
      @arturoaguilar6002 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Maybe the 40-feet long dragon not finding amusing you turned her gold into straw was enough of a good reason. It was worth for the player to explore a way to escape the liar without angering the dragon (there isn't, but there are a couple of different ways to set the straw on fire which is a nice touch that rewards experimentation).

The premise for this game sounds amazing, as does the inert lore. It's a shame that the entire trilogy never came to be, as I feel like this is a trilogy I would have really enjoyed. Anyway, thanks for being so indepth with your retrospective on Loom. As always, it was a great and informative watch.

  • @mborok
    @mborok 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had to call the Lucas Arts hint line (no web in those days) to solve the dragon stealing sheep puzzle. But it was a clever and logical puzzle, unlike the dragon puzzle in “Zork” (hit the dragon with the sword several times until it becomes curious and starts to follow you, then lead it to the room with the glacier; the dragon will see its own reflection, think it’s another dragon, then breathe fire on it, melting the ice and turning it to steam, which then kills the dragon). Better an easy puzzle that you can figure out, than one that requires you to just try random things. Thank you for this background, I had no idea there was an audio play, or a remake.

This was my favorite game as a kid. I dreamt and obsessed over it. That soundtrack is engrained on my subconscious. It was a great retrospective but you skipped which for me is the definitive version of the game. The Amiga port. Looks like something between the ega and VGA (I find the VGA version too colourfull which takes away some of the atmosphere) and the sound is easily the best.

Fun fact: Near the start of the game, after you gain your Distaff, you can cast the Rift spell (assuming you've played the game once already and have it written down) right away and "trick" the game into playing the ending sequence, where the Loom is torn apart and everyone becomes a swan. I did this numerous times with the PC EGA diskette version in the early 90s. I have no idea if it works with any other version.

I was a little boy when games like Pac Man, Joust, Missle Command, Frogger, etc. were on the Atari. The first PC games I ever played (my elementary and middle schools had Macs, so I knew about/played the Oregon Trail, Number Crunchers, and a few other games like a Mystery Mansion type game and a town driving/navigation game from school, etc.) were this game (in my teens, Coaster, MadMaze (AOL/Prodigy), Age of Empires, a few demos like Full Throttle and Warcraft, Myst, and a few others... Of course, I had seen a lot of Nintendo and Sega games, plus Doom, Quake, etc. by my late teen years.
Loom was JUST AMAZING... It was the first game I had ever played, other than MadMaze, that made me feel like I was TRULY in a different fantasy world, etc. In later years, I would discover The Black Cauldron video game, Simon the Sorceror, etc., but these games paled in comparison to Loom.
Legend of Kyrandia came out very early on when I was just in college, or right before I went to college. I LOVED the magic concept, the COLORS, the explorative aspects, etc., but the chemistry puzzle at Zanthia's was too "trial and error" for my taste, so I never finished it. I didn't really get into the sequels too much, but I remember the opening of Legend of Kyrandia II.
To this day, I still will have dreams regarding/inspired from the video game Loom, here and there. Esp. Crystalgard, the opening dark island of the Weavers, the dark caves and the green field/Scottish wee lass's house, etc. The shepherds were complete jerks, yes... 😁😁😁 I liked at Crystalgard how everyone just "was"... The whole "vibe" of the place I have always LOVED TO DEATH... SERIOUSLY. I think it has something to do with the mostly kindly/more scholarly/cultured, etc. folks there, and that you felt both "sneaky", and relaxed/not too "on edge" at the same time, while snooping around the place... 🤔🤔🤔😊😊😊
In the first area, I remember how I wanted there to be more tents to discover/explore, a little bit easier time of figuring out the way the musical drafts (spells) worked, having MORE of those spells (but, eh, I think I just wanted more tents to explore, to be honest. It was hard getting off that first island... SUCH a color contrast when getting to Crystalgard for the first time!!! 😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😊😊😊😊😊👍👍
The forest outside of Crystalgard, where the shepherds were, was just BREATHTAKINGLY beautiful, yes, I can see the similarity with Sleeping Beauty now... 😊👍 It was "off putting" to have the shepherds be so mean in such a beautiful forest area, but at the same time, a very "new" experience for me to experience thematically/story-wise/imaginatively, etc.
The purple dragon WAS funny, I always thought she reminded me more of the purple dragon in Legend of Kyrandia (they prob. got their idea somewhat for the purple dragon in that game from Loom... 🤔). Of course there was Discworld, which I never played, but saw the playthrough on TH-cam in more recent years. (The ARTWORK!!! Like Don Bluth level!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍)
The black caves were plenty mysterious and dark, and the gray bridge area was a somewhat novel concept with the bridge uncurling like that/straightening out...
The red (yes, these color themed areas I LOVED LOVED LOVED-that whole color/level idea) blacksmith area/forge was kinda intense looking, etc., sure, and I remember wondering how I was going to get out of there. The eavesdropping part was a little tricky as well. The ending part of the game (Bishop Mandible on) is fuzzier in my mind when I first played it, but over time, the story makes more sense, etc. That swan lake out in space = NEXT LEVEL!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍 But yeah, the lore of the game went DEEP... 😯😯😯😯😯😯
The Wheel of Time, Baldur's Gate I and II/TOB, American McGee's Alice, Harry Potter 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and maybe Fable have been truly some of the better games I have played in adult years. Lots and lots of more mediocre games compared to these big boys... I've beaten most of my favorite older games mentioned in this comment, at least all of them except Legend of Kyrandia. Icewind Dale was buggy, beat Icewind Dale II and Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind (kind of), Oblivion and Skyrim, Divinity: Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity I and II (🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮, but II was not bad...), Solasta: Crown of the Magister and others.
Fantasy games need to get back to TRUE fantasy adventure "roots", in my opinion... That means having that WONDER of visual and other aspects of a game's world, the quirky humor, the intrigue, mystery, etc. of figuring out what is going on in a place where magic exists in a more high fantasy type setting perhaps, the colors, the options a player has at any given time, the depth and importance/lore of the central themes of the main quest, etc.
    😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍

I remember playing, and beating this game, with a friend, in one evening! It was the original EGA release, played on a Windows 3.1 laptop, and it thankfully had a compatible sound card.
My friend had a bunch of LucasArts Games diskettes. It had Maniac Mansion, Zak McCracken, Indiana Jones, Monkey Island, and Loom. It didn't come with the tape, but we didn't know there was a tape.
I remember being enthralled by this game. The more we played, the more intrigued I got.
We had to use a piece of paper for the "codes", but we didn't care. (We had played other games that had us writing down things like that, so it wasn't a big deal.)

This is your best video yet and I appreciate all the effort you put in!
I totally agree with you. Loom is great and was ahead of it's time by cutting a lot of the crap out adventures game had at the time. It could have been a bit longer but everything is pure gold about the game! It's one of my favorite adventure games for sure of the era.
I'd love to see cover the Laura Bow games sometime especially The Dagger of Amon Ra. Quite underrated like Loom though definitely not easy or player friendly!

Great video and such a beautiful game, it will always have a place in my heart. I hope Return to Monkey Island's success might inspire Disney to lend out the license to Moriarty. I want to see him fully realize his vision with Forge and The Fold.

Man... some games back then sure took creative spins that will be hard seen again - what even is a note scribbled on paper to a kid today when there is simply loomwiki - I weep that they will never know such joy and horror. And I smile hoping they will find it elsewhere.

Another great video. I never realised what an original and intriguing game Loom is. I dismissed it entirely back when I had an Amiga - because LucasArts chose to keep the hideous EGA colour palette in the Amiga version rather than use the Amiga's palette. The graphics were hard to look at! I'm glad to finally find out what it was about: I can't think of any other video game that has such an imaginative story.

This is one of "the ones that got away" from my childhood. I fell in love with Lucasfilm point and click games with Maniac Mansion and Zac McCracken, and really wanted to play this, but I didn't have a PC. I looked at the box though. A lot.

I remember getting this game when we first got our CD player and SoundBlaster 16 card for PC. We also got Monkey Island and a few other CD titles.
It always seemed like some large, grand game as a child, when you got stuck in these games, it made them seem much longer, yet when you go back now as an adult - they're incredibly short. Still, this one had great voice acting, and I loved it as a kid... And I think I remember the Loom Audio story being on a separate CD, not cassette.

Agree on the fact that was underappreciated.
Played many graphics adventure game at the time, many very good and memorable but must of them pretty similar. Loom was an original and fresh take on the genre both for narrative and gameplay and earned a special place in my heart for this.

This one set a really high bar for me as a kid. I had the CD-ROM version, and that rendition of Swan Lake turned me into a Tchaikovsky (and MT-32) fan. I loved the music, the beautiful artwork, unique story, and the immersive atmosphere of the game. It ranks up there with Myst as one of my all-time favorite and most impactful games I've played.
The EGA version looks spectacular, and some day I would like to play it just to see how it differs -- both for the remarkable graphics, but also for the dialog. I usually prefer games w/o voice acting, but Loom was so well done that I'm not sure I'll feel the same.

I've never really been one of these 'video games can be art' types, but I think that around this era, video games as a medium had the capacity to be 'art' and Loom exemplified that, to me. If there was any shot for video games to be considered along the lines of movies or literature, this was it. It didn't quite go that way, but Loom'll always be an excellent experience.
