    The thing I love the most is when I'm cutting wood alone in the woods. I'm at peace and feel like I'm in the right place doing the right thing. Splitting and stacking is almost a zen experience. Love your videos.

      As a teen, i once said in class that I was wanted to live in the forest and chop wood. the other kids looked at me like I was crazy. i just always pictured it as being so relaxing and "zen-like," as you put it. Now, 20 years later, it's become very popular. i'll get myself there soon enough. until then, videos like this relax me and keep me focused. trebor, God bless and stay safe.

      I grew up cutting and splitting wood as a kid and learned to hate it. Now I’m in my thirties and look forward to cutting and splitting for the same reasons as mentioned. Funny how things change as we get older. Wood splitting is some of the best time for reflection

He lets me go on his property and shoot, and he has loads of firewood, but doesn't burn wood, so I get all I want (lifetime supply). Anyways, here's to the old timers out there! I remember the "Wings" on the side of the front doors - They were good for air flow and can direct it and they were useful in deflecting the stream of bugs from wiping along the drivers window. Then we got screw on metal fins in front of them to do the bug flow and the wings back to air. 1952 Woody fire engine Red. Wonderful car. Bought new.

  • @roflstomps324
    @roflstomps324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I switched from Stihl to Oregon chains.
    Reason being is that I bought a new Stihl chain for my saw and went to a job. I get there and I run out my old chain as long as possible. I ran the file over it a little and ran it some more. The cutting was getting slow enough that I unboxed my new chain and put it on the bar. I should say, tried to put it on the bar. There were four links that were a different color on the chain.
    These links were much thicker than the rest of the chain. So thick that they would not slot into the bar. I couldn't run it. It was as if someone broke the chain, replaced the links with thicker links and sold it to me as if it were new.
    I popped into a chainsaw dealership, the closest to me at the time, and all they had were Oregon chains. I bought one for half what the Stihl chain cost me and I haven't looked back.

    Oregon chain's are good chain's and will cut fast the down fall is that they are made of a softer metal and wont hold a edge as long as a Stihl chain. Which is what makes Stihl chain's a better choice for heavy cutting.

    • @jimhofoss9982
      @jimhofoss9982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Wolfe I agree....Stihl chains keep the edge longer, better lubrication with the slotted “oilomatic” drivers, which also reduces chain stretch. New file before you head into the sticks helps your day go smoothly, too.

    • @Fancyfan1000
      @Fancyfan1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are also big differences in which Stihl chain model. The "pro" type chains are much faster than the "homeowner" type safer chains.

    • @danielsmith8659
      @danielsmith8659 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fancyfan1000 Oregon’s professional Line chains. Power cut and duracut are good chains. I love em.... this is coming from a previous Stihl chain user.... but a stock Stihl safety chain or homeowner chain will out last the cheap Oregon chains . But as far as the professional , im more impressed with Oregon.

    Great test! We all understand that in any cutting operation, friction is the enemy. Perhaps some comparisons with a temp gun along some spots maybe helpful. Most of us know that point where it is time to stop cutting, fill lube, refresh edges before continuing to cut. I would be curious if the larger Stihl tooth produced more or less friction. Keep up the good work!

      We all run oregon chain here because it stays sharper far longer.
      I can run two square ground oregon chains per day here, change to a new chain at lunch. I tried out stihl chain, and had to touch up my chain with a file 3-6 times per day on top of swapping chains at lunch. I regret buying a 100' loop of stihl chain. I ended up just giving the rest of it away.

I didnt get it but I had one of the same vintage, late 70s. Looking at the inside of the truck, listening to the motor, watching you mess with the vent window (those were the best, i miss them) all took me back to a great time in my youth. Thanks.

    I like the way you did your test and adding the raker tweak. Thanks, That was very interesting. I did a similar test with the new Husky X-Cut chain on a 550XP MK2, a 550XP with a 21 Chain and a Stihl261CM with a new factory chain. May not seem like a technically good comparison but I have compared the saws previously and they are exceptionally close. I may repeat it like you did with just one saw and changing the chains. The X-Cut chain was a little faster and noticeably smoother cutting. I've never officially checked the hardness of different brands. That will be an interesting next test but I have a bunch of cutting to do before I can get to that. What I see from most of this is that in real life work, I probably add more variability to the cut time than the chain does. Thanks for your videos. Love em!

    I dont like the way stihl chains are sharpened at the factory, the gullet is not round, and they have a little bump before the lower part of the gullet. I believe it slows the wood discharge. It makes wood chips plug inside the gullet. I find that stihl chains cut the best on the first sharpening, when you get the nice smooth semi-circle shaped gullet, and the teeth are the highest because it's still new.
    What I like about Oregon chains is that the angle the cutting teeth have is not as dropped backwards as the stihls, so they will keep a bigger gutter through the chain's life, while stihl chains get smaller and shorter when sharpening compared with the oregon.

      @@Wanous-hv7zo Yes, you have to compare Stihl chains against top of the line Oregon.

Thanks also to Ron what a place you have sir, nice boats, by the way, I guess you have to be careful of driftwood around the Island with so much logging up the west coast. Billy, I really enjoy watching/listening to you read wood compression/tension and you really know your stuff and I learn something in each of your videos but there are a few things that bother me for those who watch you especially since your keen on "safety practices" and often point them out to others. My limited experience has been doing Trail Maintenance on the Appalachian Bartram, Benton MacKaye and other trails in the south where safety is important and where wearing helmets, safety glasses, face shields, gloves, chainsaw chaps and "using chainsaw brakes" are stressed as standard practices that you don't always do and never stress and should be to ensure that the non-professional chain saw users who watch/listen to you develop safe working habits for their personal safety... I hope you can start also encluding some of these safety items in your videos...
