I've watched a lot of chain sharpening videos. I thought I had a decent hang of it and I was generally happy with my freshly "sharp" chains. I spent an afternoon watching your videos before sharpening my chain, and I am blown away. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You're helping thousands of people.
I'm from nz and starting out doin firewood I've never really been taught how to do anything with a saw I've asked guys and they say a few things n expect me to pick it up without really explaining what's the objective of doin certain things with saws I want to ask a question do you file down to get the gullet shape properly

90 year-old at the end of my street still uses one of those big Pioneers for firewood, along with a couple of old Stihls and it is awesome. Murray says the only problem he has with it is fuel vaporisation in the metal fuel line after about half an hour of logging. He puts it down to cool off and uses one of his Stihls for a while. Thanks for your tips Billy.

Been using chainsaws since 68' when I attended Paul Smiths in upstate New York. Still have my double bit Sager! I'm now 73 years old and hanging in there. Currently taking down some 36" DBH willows on a fence line. Please keep the videos coming.....you are an inspiration!

I tried this on a new stihl yellow chain today. unbelievable. the first few strokes were so rough, it was apparent that the factory cut was sharp but this really cleaned it up, I’ll use your words “i trained the chain”. very cool!!! thank you. I watch all your stuff. not a pro, but capable.

Ironically I was watching another one of your filing videos when you just uploaded this one. Thank you sir once again for this. I have very much been missing a bit of the process. I've always been a counter and done equal strokes on teeth. With that being said obviously I've never really had a chain nearly as sharp as I could. After three of your videos I am pretty certain I know what adjustments I need to make.

This lesson saved me. Got an old stihl ms260 pro that had never seen a file but the chain was dull and the teeth rounded over. This saved me from diggin out my chain too deep while trying to fix the damage. Just dropped an old gnarly spruce with dense burled stump and it cut like butter. Thank you Buckin, you are a fine artist and a brilliant teacher and a good friend to many

I'm just going to mention some personal experience in case it helps anyone. I found that over time hand filing even though I was getting chains very sharp, the gullet eventually was getting filed too far down instead of back and the top of the file had trouble reaching the top cutting edge of the tooth. I went back just recently to using the guide that snaps to the file and I was golden again immediately. It was holding the file "up" where it needed to be. Could easily see that top cutting edge transform into razor sharp.

I was file my chains just like you're doing, I never gave it much thought, just felt it made sense to do it that way. I always wear leather gloves when I file a chain!

I hate to even ask, but if you find the right situation, even with smaller size wood, could you perhaps provide some tips/tricks for reading logs with regards to tension, compression, and even side forces as well? I cut almost all deadfall when gathering firewood, and as I am learning, quite often get the bar pinched. If you find the right situation that is. Makes sense to only file the cutting edge of the tooth, not everything as if it were worn down. I've often thought about this way of doing it, but I've not done it since I learned the "correct way." Back when I just started sharpening chains, I only used to file on the cutting edge about like this by rolling the foil edge off for my dad and he liked it. It was much faster, only took a couple minutes to knock one out, and it went against everything he used to do; however, he liked my way. I find a lot of links are always ground terribly from the factory and it makes for more work. I'm going to try your simplistic approach in the next few weeks though! The *"correct way"* is entirely too subjective and I've been wearing myself out for nothing! Back to basics with Mr. Billy Ray! I really appreciate a fresh approach to dealing with an old nemesis! I bet your files last much longer too...
That's great advice, buckin'. Thanks for the video. I've had that happen to me many times and was never quite sure what exactly what was going on. I'd also note that on the most recent chain I had purchased, which was a (low kickback rapid super full chisel cutter)RS3. The effect you described that comes from sharpening a new chain seemed to progress even more rapidly or to be amplified. Could of been variables outside of the chain type that caused this but I've never had it happen before to that extent and that was my only time using a low kickback chain, I normally use oregon powercut 3/8 which seems to be a day and night difference in the cutting capability.
The carlton file o plate it the only way to go . . seen my first one in 1978 . . my father in law used them . . been using them ever since. . makes for a very very smooth cut . . nice. .oregon chain 8 draws with round file 7/32 then use file o plate . HOOT !!! HOOT !!!!
So that is what I have been doing wrong, I am getting too deep in the gullet trying to clean up, this helps so much can't wait to try this now. Thank you so much
Seeing ya take a axe nockin of dirt reminds me of when I would take a wire brush and work over a log on the carage of the mill before sawing it. A little preparation helps a ton.
Awesome informational video. Yes it's happened to me, but I got over the learning curve....you really should see my midweek ripper I just did with a MS271, (on my channel) on a giant pin oak log....it's ALL about the filing !

When I picked up a new chain a few weeks ago I asked for files and one of them to be a 7/32. My guy stop in his tracks and said oh then now if your going to be like this then you want a c85 caine instead of a h47. He told me I was coming along nicely for a 61 year older.
Yeah I've gone way too get the gullet on a first filing and I just ask for others sake that it would be approached as a goldilocks thing where too much gullet bad and ski jump bad cause I watched some of your videos and assumed more than you were telling me and ended up with a wet noodle of a top plate that folded over on every tooth. Love you buckin and I know that there's way too many ski jump people out there but when new to saw people start watching for some reason they think "like me" from your older videos that you need to bury that file on a new chain and I think that you have addressed MANY!!! of the things I've said in this video

@@LaurenceTarei-qj8ph Yes, tilting the file downwards as opposed to its normal slightly upward tilted angle allows you to hit the gullet.

Watching your stroke to clear chips in the buck has definitely improved my technique as well!!!
