I know this is an older video , but I gotta say , I now know with confidence how to use the degree wheel to measure the "timing" off a two stroke engine. V-8 4 stroke engines I know , I've built Drag Cars , but couldn't for the life of me understand how you check the timing on an engine with no doggone camshaft.....LOL. Port Timing !!! It's so simple !! Thank You Buckin and Mr. Donny Walker !!!!
Hey buckin im only 13 but I've learned a lot from u I show my dad and grandfather a couple techniques u show when splitting firewood or cutting big trees keep up the great work
Buckin', I may be looking at this wrong but because you are counting backwards the extra 5 degrees should be subtracted and you guys were adding it. Should be 126* and 145* for the exhaust port. @ 9:19 mark. Love the contact brother! Keep it up. You truly are a bright spot in this world. Thank you for being a great example of positivity and leading your life with your heart.
A few ways to skin this cat but a tip for first timers. Counting back from 180 sometimes cause a mistake doing the math. A simple way to read the wheel is to hold a feeler gauge in the port so the piston is just resting on it, then start turning the crank while watching the degree wheel and just count up the degrees as you turn the wheel until it comes back and stops on the feeler gauge. And measure the port at least twice or more so you are certain you have the number right because it's cheap to remove metal but costly to put it back if you make a mistake.
I've over ported my banshee not that fun to ride any more very peaky and narrow power band i bet these smaller motors are even more sensitive to getting it to big,love these videos tho wealth of information
The only question I have is. Why not check the squish on the cylinder and piston first. If squish was to big you would be lowering the cylinder to the base which would bring port timing more even between intake and exhaust. Am I on the right line of thinking here?

Crazy that back to 60 and 70 that McCulloch was that far ahead! I would be willing to bet that there were very few that all ready had there exhaust ports set to 155 back then! I must say I am a willy nilly bloke when it came to porting my own saw I did some very out if the box stuff but man did a wake my saw up and it pulls like a train! Very cool stuff, I put a degree wheel on a 10-10 auto I have apart, had 120deg of intake timing, I’d have to take a good 3/8” off the bottom of the skirt to get to 155deg, seems like a lot of material to have to remove

I got my first saw I’m killing it in the fire wood game for my family and now splitting wood by hand almost as fast as my dad on his splitter one day I will be better thank you brotha you literally saved me from going down some nasty roads.
All your videos are full of knowledge and I love watching them Thank You. But this one right here hit me right in the aha moment! I mean I have ported a lot of 4-stroke motors. But I always just watched videos of guys free handing a two-stroke I'm praying with the transfers and that's always been my thought exactly they're just praying they got a right hoping it makes an improvement. But here's the why didn't I think of that moment for me a blessing degree wheel WHAT! I me and yeah I've used them on engines with valves but it never hit me till just now why wouldn't you use it on a 2 stroke it just makes everything make sense now. And I'm sure other guys knew this but nobody ever said hey so throw a degree wheel on there! And maybe I just had never seen a video of someone doing that or even seen in real life, LOL not real life but real time you know I mean in person. This may seem silly to you but up until now I have just cleaned up the ports on two strokes not really knowing where to go with them and not wanting to make them worse. Those days are in the past. Man I got some stuff to sleep on here thank you my friend! And I know just the first candidate, here at the local Wally world (Walmart for those who don't know), I walked past this black max 38cc chainsaw with an 18 inch bar many times it's like a hundred and twenty eight doll hairs American 😂. One day I just couldn't walk past it anymore and I threw one in the cart. Got her home and you know as well as anyone else I had the poorest excuse for a chain on it I had never seen and all my what a tiny hole and lack of breathing in that muffler. So the first right thing to do of course was not to buy the extended warranty because I was sure to avoid it as soon as I got home and I did. And I fired the thing up ran it for a couple and tore that muffler off and open it up reset the carb removed the bar tip use preventer Gizmo. The next day we put her in the wood did some final tuning filed the chain and oh she was so bad that night when I came back to the shop I found an old 20in bar from a Poland and an old full chisel chain with a little round file action on both of the tensioner holes to widen them it now fits this Chinese saw will it last meaning will the power head hold up who knows time will tell but you betcha it's going to be fun to play with just saw will be my first true port on a two-stroke! Thanks again for the nudge I guess I needed. I keep thinking degree wheel really! But the wheel is what I needed as a guide can you give me a direction of where to head with the port. Thanks again!
I like gettin an exposure to this tech stuff. don't know if I will ever get an opportunity to apply it to my saws, but you never know. kinda following what this man is doing with Buckin's saw
Get you a 90deg mini grinder for those transfers and go slow. I use an old ring on top of the piston to determine position from TDC. Lay it out paying attention to port shape and transfer angle. Donny won't steer you wrong on this Macs by the looks of things!
I’ve also notice that we got down under versions off the sane saw that the states have like for example 797 here have half wrap handle and over there full wrap I wonder if them at was done to save weight

Glad i'm not the only one who noticed, hopefully they haven't started the port work yet.
If you remember, they’re not cutting the exhaust port.

i use .050 solder its consistant and airflow starts at around.050 under compression,also makes chacking transfers simple...
