You and Miniac are easily my two favorite painters at this point. Absolutely incredible work with how you portray light that isn’t actually there. The reflection from the eyes of the helmet onto the armor is absolutely phenomenal, and you’ve gained a sub from this video alone
I recently decided to change my recipe for my black armoured fallen dark angels, and this is almost identical, except I use slightly different enamels and more rust! haha, but awesome vid! I'm tryna work out whether to do the silver trim on my guys first as I find i'm definitely messiest at that part, then fill it all back in with black then dry brush the armour and then do the details etc, as worried after dry brushing it all i would fuck it up doing the trims..
With the new Black Templars teaser I knew I needed to find a video on how to paint them. Apparently TH-cam agreed because this video was randomly suggested to me. Loving what you did with the miniature and will definitely give this a try before I get my hands on the BT Primaris line.
New to hobby and enjoy this video ty, but can I ask the BT community do we really think if they paint their armour black they are going to use a brown belt instead of black same with boots and gloves on initiates .. black on black .. lol my 2c
Hi thanks for this cool cool painting technique. I was so excited that I tried it right away, but after the wash was dried and I tried to reduce the wash with turpentine oil, the acrylic paint was washed away :-( what am I doing wrong?
On the shoulder pads, at one point should you apply the Black Templar transfer? After the whole process is done or before applying the AK dark brown wash?
Awesome stuff! Will be giving this a try to my templars! Just a question but how would you paint Tabards and cloths in this style? I'm thinking on heavily sculpting with Greenstuff to add such features to my Templars and would like them to match the style when I come to painting them.
Awesome tutorial! I absolutely love your guides and they've definitely made me want to experiment more with a gritty grimdark style as opposed to the standard clean edge highlight method. I'd love to see how you would go about painting more brighter colours in this way. I really want to start a Sons of the Phoenix force in this style however I'm not quite sure whether that would work, with the armour being mainly white with purple. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that :)
For brighter colours I would work with mostly oils and oil washes. You can work wonders with simple Black and dark brown oils to preserve the colors, but still create a very deep and intimidating shadows and highlights. Greenish grey also works absolutely great with white tones, so perhaps Starship Filth would be a great option to explore. :)
Wow! That video is a real eye opener! Thank you very much for this tutorial! One question: Could I do everything the same, except using "AK Interactive streaking grime" or would that give me a much different look?
The difference is in the finish - AK Streaking Grime is much more brownish than Dark Brown Wash, and leaves slightly more dusty finish. It is doable, but the model will have slightly browner tone. :)
@@Gravehammer Okay! Then I will better get me some Dark Brown Wash :) Streaking Grime sounds perfect for Death Guard though. Thanks a lot for your answer! :)
This video has inspired me to paint my indomitus box as black templars! Would i be able to use an airbrush to zenithal highlight using eshin grey instead of drybrushing? Just received my first airbrush so super excited to get hours in with it
Absolutely fantastic, glad you found inspiration! Yes, all the basic layers can be done with airbrush also, but I would still do the shoulderpads as stippling, to get that scruffy look.
Once the enamel has dried up sufficiently (ie not visibly wet anymore) you can easily paint acrylics over it. Recesses take up longer to dry so be mindful, especially with regular washes. :)
@@Gravehammer thank you so much, I’m really stoked to try this ! I only just found this style of painting and it has blown my mind, thank you for an awesome tutorial 😊
You could actually try and replace the enamel wash with a mix of Nuln Oil:Agrax:Lahmian Medium 1:1:1 and work some of the recesses more. It won't be optimal but doable!
Let them cower in defiance of our righteous fury. They shall despair beneath the wrath of our holy banners. Let them tremble before the might of our unstoppable advance. We shall bring upon them the purity of holy death in the name of the Emperor. Let them fear us.
I commonly use the q-tip when the model is mostly dry, you can speed up the drying process with a hairdryer (really!). Dont let the enamel cure overnight as once its completely cured, it does not react to mineral spirits anymore.

Thank you sincerely for your comment, being even remotely compared to Miniac is such an honor. Glad I could inspire!
Can we get a tutorial and how you did the Eyes and other red OSL
It's nice to see someone anyone for that matter do a tutorial fr ppl m start to finish with a paintbrush! Well done mate!
Thank you! I will try and do as much as possible with just brush, but airbrush is something that is hugely helpful.🙂
I am really new in the hobby, but the grimdark style is my favorite by far! Awesome result, I think I will try some of this on my Chaos Space marine
Great vid! It would be interesting to see how you worked with the shoulder markings.

simple & effective. going to try this one some black legion

Well done. Great video, mate. Will definitely try this.
Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!
Great tutorial mate, would love to see a tutorial for how you painted that Lumineth Warden!
Thanks, really appreciate it! I might do a tutorial on LML later down the line. :)

Could you do a video about your grimdark lumineth ? They were awesome! Have a great grimdarkweekend tho ! And keep up the great tutorials.
This is one of the most requested tutorials and I will try my best to do one! Only problem is to get a single miniature for the work haha!
Very nice, wondering how to paint some future ebon keshig, now I know :)

Great work and model. Can you later do one for ultramarines? I find their blue real hard to work in grimdark style.

Could you explain how this would differ when painting vehicles.
Love this! Do you get any issues painting over the enamel with acrylic?

uuuuh. great. how you die the eyes?
Would like to see red armor
Any pointers on containing the white you stimpled on the shoulder pads? With my test model I got it all over the trim.
Could you swap the AK Interactive Dark Brown Wash for Agrax earthshade or nuln oil?
You could actually try and replace the enamel wash with a mix of Nuln Oil:Agrax:Lahmian Medium 1:1:1 and work some of the recesses more. It won't be optimal but doable!

Grim dark blood angels please
I have multiple grimdark Blood Angel tutorials up on my Patreon and one on Grimdark Compendium 🙂
@@Gravehammer if I had the money I would check out patron :(
Where is the different between AK dark brown wash and (winter) streaking grime?
DBW is much darker brown, and winter streaking grime is greenish grey. :)
@@Gravehammer Ah ok thank you very much! Im just in front of painting my death guard and thinking about which i should use 🤔
short tutorial for the eyes and the glow effect?
It was very simple OSL - white glaze on the eyes sockets, tiny amount of white on the neck plate and then glaze over with red ink!
@@Gravehammer thanks very much!
Could this be used similarly to the legion of the dames
Well, as their armor is based in black I’d assume that any way you paint black armor, would also work for legion of the damned
Komia figu tuli.
What kind of wash did you use on the shoulders? Also, what did you use to remove it ? :)
Thank you!!!!
Painted up and read to purge furries..
Where in Holland are you from?
Ha, I'm finnish actually, live near the capitol of Finland. :)
@@Gravehammer haha, shame. I had to guess. Great video man
