@Bennett Dylan thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Your videos have single handedly inspired me to paint again with similar passion. Your story telling is eloquent and straightforward while being visually digestible. Watching you learn new techniques shows viewers relatability and being content with their own painting style. Being able to tell my own story through painting has been the perspective I needed. Thank you so much for reigniting the fire I had to enjoy painting in the present and into the future.
I like doing true metallic black by basing with a dark iron color, then painting over that with the black contrast; then drybush a metallic highlight on it to bring back some of that shine. The contrast paint gives it the black color, but because it's not a perfect coverage, it still keeps some of the metal visible through it; kinda results in a slightly oily, faded metal look, which is perfect for the metal bits of big mechas and such.
Oh man! This is great. I started painting minis for the first time a couple weeks ago and have been disappointed with how all the black parts have turned out. Thanks so much!
thanks Harry, glad to hear you are getting into the hobby. Black is tricky! Starting out I'd definitely try the contrast paints or washes... over brighter surfaces.
I appreciate this video so much. You explained in a much better way than I why black is a pain. Most edge highlighting I've seen from expert painters is very heavy. Have to outline literally every crevice and detail. And then, for black, no matter if it's a cloth or a matte metal or a shiney surface, they always edge with shades of blue. This has always, because of the heavy highlighting, done the thing you mentioned with the too much grey makes the black grey, turned the black into blue. And I think your video explains really well why that happens.
Thanks 🙏 I’m getting more and more aware of the fact that this channel is about me / my thoughts and process and that there is not much “right or a wrong” to be taught. Talking about how I reflect on painting stuff seems to mirror a lot of other peoples. Just by talking about this and putting it in a video can maybe help people solve their own problems rather than try and copy my technique (I hope so anyway). There is of course tips and tricks - “right and wrong” - but I think my learned peers can teach that better. I’m mainly here to inspire. Rambling on here, but I’m glad my thoughts on black came through in this video :)
I got a recommendation for your channel from Ms. Dana Howl. The subject of Black intrigued me and so here I am. I clicked "subscribe"...like your style...cant wait to see what else is here. Cheers!
Welcome to the channel North. I'm very glad for Dana's mention, a great surprise to start of the new year. Currently I'm working on a bunch of videos simultaneously. Always a bad idea :) So there will be a bit of a wait for new material - but then a lot of it. Happy New Year!
This has been EXTREMELY helpful, I've been struggling with minis that have black armor and other things to try and bring depth to them but this has given me much guidance and a good direction to work in!
I’m gearing up to start painting minis again, Battletech this time, and I decided to do black as the main color for my vehicles. Contrast paints weren’t around the last time I painted, so this was very helpful. I was struggling to think about what order to work in as I’d never painted minis primarily black before. I appreciate how you were able to blend theory and practical application as you talked. Concise and informative. Great video!
@@52Miniatures Oh, that’s a good point. They’re in the 1.5 to 2 inch range, some have quite a bit of complicated geometry, but others are definitely pretty flat. It’ll at least be a point to start experimenting from. :)
This is great! I love how specific the instruction is. I kinda need that sometimes. I like to learn to do it "right", then mess with it once you have the proper technique. I'm not an artist...I'm just a dude who wants cool looking minis.
Thank you so much for this. I always struggle with black - 90% mentally before I even put paint to brush. This has given me new perspective. BTW, you are an amazing artist and a true inspiration!
This video explains how to paint black better than anything else I have seen. As someone with a 40k army that wears black armor, this was extremely helpful.
Totally agree for the most part, but I seem to have get lost halfway through, maybe I was a bit tried. I looking for different spin on painting my black legion army and today I've found 2 ways so far. Thanks
I just wanna let you know that I found your "recipe" exceptional useful. After hours struggling of painting my very first Black Templar, at last I'm pleased with results. Thank you for sharing and keep going with beatiful and valuable videos!
Dish washing detergent, I never used it to dilute paint. It is also usefull for terrain making. For example, it works perfect to glue ballast to tracks, in model raileroad landscape. Mix PVA glue with water, and add a couple off detergent drops to the mix. Now put the ballast or very little stone bits in the place of the terrain you are making. To finish, bath with dilutes PVA just from top of it, and let it dry. It will glue perfectly. Dish washing detergent will allow the glue go throw all the ballast and soak it completely. Otherwise, if you just dilute PVA glue with only water, it will form drops in the top off the ballast, sand or little rocks to be glued with a horrible result.
Yeah! Exactly. It reduces the surface tension. I’ve been told floor polish works very well for this as well... just don’t know what type. Floor polish is not very common in Sweden.
YES!!! Thank you so much. This is the Anvils of the Heldenhammer tabletop method I've been looking for. This added to antique gold and bleached, dirty (grim dark) cloth will be perfect for what I needed.
I subscribed to you on a whim and now you've taught me how to paint black. I'm am definitely going to incorporate this approach in my painting skills...however long it may take to become proficient

A thinking man's painter, I really enjoyed the ideas and carefully considered approach I liked the results a lot, especially the almost cast iron texture from the black pigment and will grab the white at the same time based on your recommendation. I do love drybrushed transitions when they're done well and not chalky, to pull that off with white on the brush is a real challenge and you succeeded admirably. I don't think I'd bother with the contrast black, I don't think much of that survived the later treatments and would likely go with a flat chromatic black at that stage. Like the zenithal lightmap, I think you used it well to show yourself the details and the volumes you were going to develop with the dry brush technique, but likewise not much survived to the end result. A really enjoyable vid and look forward to more, immediate no brainer to subscribe
Thanks A! Glad to hear about the pigments. They are well worth the investment in my book. You are right, a lot of the zenithal got covered, but enough survived to at least use as a guide for the other layers. Welcome to the channel :)
This video, although released some time ago, is very timely for me as I'm painting a mini from the Fallout board game from Fantasy Flight Games. The mini is the Brotherhood of Steel figure and my cousin asked it to be in the Brotherhood Outcast coloring. Basically, the power armor is painted black with red trim in various spots. Due to the game being set in a waste land and the armor being old, there is a lot of wear to the paint job. I've got my work cut out for me but I feel I have a goo strategy of painting/highlighting the black, then red, then adding in the metal wear/chipping to show the base armor underneath. Long story, short, thanks for this video! 😄

I have just become a new subscriber having only found your channel 3 days ago! I find your approach to the hobby and the way you present your topics to be very refreshing and entertaining. I hate shading and highlighting black but after watching your approach feel I should take another go at it. One thing I was doing was highlighting black with flesh colours especially on fabric...the warm tone giving it a more cloth like appearance. Thank you for sharing this with us and I look forward to the next vid!
That is incredible, just stumbled across this while looking for a blue cloak recipe! Now I have to work out which models are getting amazing black armour!
Just a thought. But you could enhance the bright outline of the 'shiny' black armor by painting a tiny amount of gloss varnish in those locations. Just to add a bit of additional reflected light. If you don't like the look, you can undo it with a bit of matte varnish.
Very well done and thorough explanation on black armour. I also appreciate your calm approach to painting. Easy to watch and listen while I'm painting myself. I'm going to try the liquid pigment! That'll be new for me :)
I was looking for just such a video. Thank you. i was going to approach black templar armour lke this. It helped to confirm my thoughts before I got started. Love your approach to your content.
This black armour looks so good! The minis as a whole look deliciously dark and scary, I love it! I might "borrow" some of those techniques at some point ;)
Very useful I’m doing a Star Wars character with yellow and black as the basic colours and wanted to start with a pale primer (to help with the yellow… instead of black primer) so your guidance here is very useful!
I am definitely using this techniques for a Clone Commando Squad called Omega Squad. They had a matte black armor and your technique will allow my to differentiate between the black of their armor, weapons and under armor.
Super high quality video! Really nice to watch and listen to while I'm painting. Glad I found your channel and am looking forward to checking out your other videos.
I'm now going to order some of the white dust liquid pigments and try drybrushing with it. I'm planning on painting some Orlock miniatures for Necromunda and they're predominantly black. Thanks for the advice.
I won't lie, your narration and videography is wonderful and interesting. You made something which could have been boring if done not well into something quite entertaining! The small clips, like the paints in the toolbox really made this awesome. A VERY well done :D
The fluid you put in dishwashers also acts as a flow improver and has the advantage of not bubbling as much as dish soap. It might even work in an airbrush, though I haven’t tried it yet.
Interesting technique! I usually use a mixture of Citadel Leadbelcher with a bit of black, or Army Painter Gun Metal with a bit of black. Both about a 3 to 1 black ratio.
You got a air brush booth, nice! I am finishing up some black space marines using that second technique. Highlight up and than glaze back down. Great video, thanks!
Yeah! It makes more noise than the airbrush compressor. Combine the two and it’s like someone’s parking a helicopter right outside. But hey, better than freezing my fingers off outside. Good to hear from you Josh. Good luck with that black!
First time running into your videos and I must say... Bravo! Aside from the subject matter, that in its self was captivating, the film style was just charming. And that narrating voice of yours was simply, and please take this as my highest praise, nature film like! I loved it! Made me subscribe right away. Thank you!
Well thank you D, I appreciate it. If only the mini's would come alive, and I could study their habits in their natural habitat! :) Welcome to the channel.
FINALLY! A painter with manicured nails! Dude I can't tell you how much, I'm put off by janky nails taking away from the subject material. Also your black recipe is awesome, I'm going to have to borrow it :D
Again , i enjoyed my trip to painting "Church", your philosophy, again much like the preachers sermon. I hope to achieve now that i am blessed knowleged.
i just found your channel. excellent learning videos and a good sense of humor. thats all I need. good work. you definitely have a new subscriber. All the Best from Switzerland.
Great stuff good sir! You have a new fan. Your painting process resonates with my own. Videos are so well made. I love how each video is a story. I talk in stories myself.
@@52Miniatures I’ll check out your patreon, because I’m struggling, I mean really struggling to achieve a good look for my Stardrake. I may be setting myself up for a fail trying to achieve what the paint looks like on the box. 🙁
You can get the exact same look by combining AK Metal Medium and whichever tint of black you want. A 1 to 1 ratio mixture, and then thinned down to water consistency, then layer to desired look
This was really interesting to watch. I wish I could see the models on the tabletop to get the full effect but I definitely want to to give this a try with some sisters of battle. I think it would be an amazing effect to mix it with the deep red cloaks they wear.
Thanks Jules. On the tabletop, my mini's from this video appear more "black" but with visible details. That being the point 😂 I get quite a few comments on the fact that these look "grey". But we all know what happens when stuff ends up on the table, everything looks darker... and I tried to take that into consideration when making the video.
Nice James! Depending on budget... I would quite recommend getting the “propper” boxes of troops and not the “push to fit” ones, usually found in starter boxes. The regular ones just have so much more potential for individuality... and you won’t have to worry about gaps on every other shoulder pad...
Thanks! Yeah, love that white dust for dry brushing. Especially on a big makeup brush! Make sure to wipe of more than with normal paints though. Because it’s so fluid, it needs it.
I decided to follow your approach and ran into an issue. I'm using liquitex white ink to add my zenithal and the contrast paints started blending with the ink ruining the effect. I had left the ink to dry overnight so they weren't exactly wet. I don't know if this is just a me problem but I thought I'd share the info in case someone has the same ink as I do. Still love the paint job, I'm definitely gonna follow through with it. Just maybe need to throw down a coat of varnish. You live and you learn
Yeah, I’ve heard this is a think with ink vs. contrast paints. The most common problem solver is to ad a small amount of varnish into the ink while your doing the zenithal. Like just the drop should do it.
@@52Miniatures Ahh so it's something others experienced too then, I should have researched the contrast paints a little more. It's my first time using them. I'm more used to oil for shading but seeing how efficient your approach here is I was inspired to try them out. Just seemed like a lot of fun. Thanks a lot for the tip concerning the varnish, just stripped the model and ready for round 2
I'm trying to go from a very dark sort of off black/blue. then I can add depth and darken it, but also highlight. This is for Black Templars though which traditionally have blue highlights. I think this will look a lot better than just highlighting flat black, but it's working out the correct method for it. Really need to pick up some of those liquid pigments, they look great.
Man those minis look great. I'll definitely try your version of painting black next time I decide to make some black armor. I've been mulling around whether to buy some chaos knights. If I do, I'll be using this method to paint their black armor.
Just came across you channel and the content is great! I’ve always struggled with painting black and I think will give me a lot of fun new ways to approach it. Seems like green stuff world has a lot of great product, wish it was easier to get in the US
Thanks R and welcome to the channel. Yes I've heard GSW can be tricky to get hold of in the US. Some of the stuff they put out, is just to make it easier for hobbyists, like materials that can be found in a lot of places... but.. saves the roundtrip. A lot of their products are unique too.
That was an awesome result. Obviously you've done some great experimenting behind the scenes here to come up with this recipe. I'll keep this in mind if I get around to some black armour myself! Looking forward to seeing what other unique takes you come up with in the future!
Thanks! I did one fail, but most of it was planed in my head more than on minis :) It would most probably look real well with metallic armour as well. Just drybrush with a metallic instead :) Hope you are doing well and staying safe.
Looks great! I'll definitely be giving that a try for Black Templars! What red/blues did you use on the shield and the rest of the armour? It's so muted and blends soo well! I think what I’m learning from watching your videos is I’m doing things in a counter productive order, as in I’m going ok step one this colour, step two this colour etc (the citadel way) When I could actually just start having everything ready on my wet palette and start wet blending and mixing triad colours. I do need to also invest in some scale 75 colours as I’ve realised just how matt they are and how they blend. Thank you for the learning and inspiration!
Hey! Thanks! There is a video called "the blue cloak" I think. The paints used on that cloak is the same as in this video. On the shields I think there is just some brown... can remember what. If available to you, you can also check out ProAcryl paints. Matte as well and very nice to work with. I love Scale75 but some find them tricky to work with.
@@52Miniatures I have actually just watched that video after watching this one! Thank you very much for your recommendations, I’m definitely going to be doing a little experimentation in the way I paint on the back of this. I’ve just been doing some reading on the behaviour of Scale 75 so I can understand what you mean, I didn’t know much about Proactryl but I shall do a bit of research thank you.
I am really amazed by the experiments you must undertake to come up with a great recipe like here. I have to express my gratitude that you then share this experience with us and greatly composed, cut and narrated video. Keep going!

Kind of yeah. Pretty much a walk in the park... or an epic battle.

Honestly the two types, having written multiple black armor tabletop characters 😂

I like doing true metallic black by basing with a dark iron color, then painting over that with the black contrast; then drybush a metallic highlight on it to bring back some of that shine. Ive been painting since 1983 and these techniques were new to me. This guy knows what hes doing.

Very well done and thorough explanation on black armour. I also appreciate your calm approach to painting. Easy to watch and listen while I'm painting myself. I'm going to try the liquid pigment! That'll be new for me :)
I'm about to watch this for the 3rd time in a row to try to soak this in.... 🤯
I was looking for just such a video. Thank you. i was going to approach black templar armour lke this. It helped to confirm my thoughts before I got started. Love your approach to your content.
Thanks Byron, glad it helped.
This black armour looks so good!
The minis as a whole look deliciously dark and scary, I love it! I might "borrow" some of those techniques at some point ;)
Please do Vinc, I go back to using this "technique" every now and again. Works well in combination with metallics too.
Very useful I’m doing a Star Wars character with yellow and black as the basic colours and wanted to start with a pale primer (to help with the yellow… instead of black primer) so your guidance here is very useful!
This is very true K! I never thought of that. Good point. Might even try it myself. Thanks!
Just discovered your channel. Excellent videography, I love the editing, b-roll and well-paced voice-overs! 👌
Thanks Bart! I'm all the time searching for ways to make videos that I enjoy making... these last couple of videos have been a lot of fun :)
Huh, what a coincidence. I've been thinking about a color scheme for my new stormcast these last few days... This is very inspiring!
Glad to hear it C, go for it :)
I am definitely using this techniques for a Clone Commando Squad called Omega Squad. They had a matte black armor and your technique will allow my to differentiate between the black of their armor, weapons and under armor.
Great Joshua!
Super high quality video! Really nice to watch and listen to while I'm painting. Glad I found your channel and am looking forward to checking out your other videos.
Thank you 🙏 And welcome to the channel D. More is on the way as well :)
I'm now going to order some of the white dust liquid pigments and try drybrushing with it. I'm planning on painting some Orlock miniatures for Necromunda and they're predominantly black. Thanks for the advice.
Nice Will, I’d love to hear how that goes. And don’t forget to wipe the brush real thoroughly, more than you would a regular paint.
The holy grail and vader great choices love the videos they are very therapeutic to have on while painting 👍
I won't lie, your narration and videography is wonderful and interesting. You made something which could have been boring if done not well into something quite entertaining! The small clips, like the paints in the toolbox really made this awesome. A VERY well done :D
Thank you Dave! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It’s great to hear.
This was my first video I've watched on your channel. Really loved it. Thanks for the helpful tips
Great to hear it :) Welcome to the channel!
Beautiful painting and a clear recipe. Your videos always look so professional too!
Thank you M 🙏 Appreciate hearing this.
The fluid you put in dishwashers also acts as a flow improver and has the advantage of not bubbling as much as dish soap. It might even work in an airbrush, though I haven’t tried it yet.
The fluid that makes the glass look extra shiny? Not diswasher detergent right? That would kill the brush I recon.
Interesting technique! I usually use a mixture of Citadel Leadbelcher with a bit of black, or Army Painter Gun Metal with a bit of black. Both about a 3 to 1 black ratio.
That looks really, really nice! Gonna have to try it out myself.
Please do John! It works out nicely :)
Hah.. well.. that sort of comes and goes. I try to remember having them in decent order but...
Great video! I will take these tips and tricks into my next adventure with black!
Thank you C! Please do. The dry brushing with liquid pigments is a real keeper in my books.
Again , i enjoyed my trip to painting "Church", your philosophy, again much like the preachers sermon. I hope to achieve now that i am blessed knowleged.
Hah! Pax Vobiscum
i just found your channel. excellent learning videos and a good sense of humor. thats all I need. good work. you definitely have a new subscriber.
All the Best from Switzerland.
Welcome to the channel Saka :)
This is still my go to when I'm trying to achieve black ⚫ still really useful!
Great to hear Ben, thank you.
@@52Miniatures how did you achieve the blue and the lighting effects? 😍😍
@@bennnnnyy26 Check out my video called "The Blue Cloak"
Great stuff good sir! You have a new fan. Your painting process resonates with my own. Videos are so well made. I love how each video is a story. I talk in stories myself.
Thank you M, I'm glad to hear it.
Amazing work, as always.
Thanks L! I appreciate it!
Informative, unique approach. I really enjoyed the voice over. Guess I better watch some more.
Thanks Eric and nice to hear. Welcome to the channel :)
They look incredible!!
Thanks David! Appreciate it :)
@@52Miniatures I’ll check out your patreon, because I’m struggling, I mean really struggling to achieve a good look for my Stardrake. I may be setting myself up for a fail trying to achieve what the paint looks like on the box. 🙁
Really nice video and explanation! Amazing work!
Thank you H! I appreciate it.
Man i really LOVED the tutorial, my most sincere thank you! Thats gona help me A LOT!
Thank you R, I'm glad to hear it!
This is absolutely fantastic. I think I will be buying some Stormcast to give it a go!
Nice James! Depending on budget... I would quite recommend getting the “propper” boxes of troops and not the “push to fit” ones, usually found in starter boxes. The regular ones just have so much more potential for individuality... and you won’t have to worry about gaps on every other shoulder pad...
Amazing Video - really liked the result. Also the dust-white advise is something that i will use in near future. Thanks
Thanks! Yeah, love that white dust for dry brushing. Especially on a big makeup brush! Make sure to wipe of more than with normal paints though. Because it’s so fluid, it needs it.
these guys look rlly good !!! defo gonna use this if i ever have to paint some black armour x
Thanks S! Go for it :)
Very interesting, I can't wait to try this!
Awesome :) good luck!
Impressive. Most Impressive.
Thank you U!
Sounds like a plan Timothy
just came across this video!! awesome technique!!
Thanks Tyler! Hope it's useful to you!
I loooooove this approach. Gonna give it a go on space marines.
Glad to hear it G, good luck!
First video of yours I've stumbled upon. Absolutely stunning work!
Thanks T, appreciate it!
That almost sounded rude.. I meant to say that I appreciate your comment...
Excellent job! Thank you!
This is a great painting technique. Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it Paul, thanks for watching
Nice comprehensive vid mate, thank you!
Glad to hear it Tom, thanks.
What an ace video. Good work pal. 😁 I'm going to use this on my Ironhands.
Nice Andrew, hope it works out well! And as I said in the video, it’s quite an adaptable technique. You can vary it from grey to black armor.
Another awesome job, brilliant and inspiring.
Thanks Mik! Glad to hear it
That was an awesome result.
I think what I’m learning from watching your videos is I’m doing things in a counter productive order, as in I’m going ok step one this colour, step two this colour etc (the citadel way)
When I could actually just start having everything ready on my wet palette and start wet blending and mixing triad colours.
Production value intensifies! Joined the patreon! 🤘
High five Andreas! I'm real glad to hear this. Thanks, and welcome to the Patreon!
I am really amazed by the experiments you must undertake to come up with a great recipe like here. I have to express my gratitude that you then share this experience with us and greatly composed, cut and narrated video. Keep going!
Thanks a lot C 😊
