    Hi guys! Just some news on the bonus real-time footage of this piece- I'm not sure how much I'll be able to show (if I'll be able to make a completed piece of it or not), as it turns out that the paper I used isn't as smooth as what I'm used to working with for my "quick" monochrome pieces. Serves me right for not checking the paper before working, I suppose!
    Unless I can find a way to complete it at my regular speed, the footage might be delayed until I have time to work on it, or if things don't work out I'll only show the sketching process that you see here- just with no speed-ups.
    Hope that makes sense at least, sorry!

    I love this video, i'm trying to draw my pet dog that sadly passed away just today. He was older than me, (14 years old) while i'm 13. He was an untrained brown village Husky. He died right in front of me while the vet was doing cpr. He was screaming and crying, almost like he refused to die. But i know, that he chose another place instead of having to make my family pay for his medications. I don't know, he would actually be on my lap right now. I don't know because i can't see, but i can feel his warmness covering me this night.

My dog passed away on the 10 of July this year and it’s been the longest 7 days of my life, he was my bestf. it just really surprised me when you said that you felt your dogs warmth because the same night my dog passed away I payed in bed crying because he slept with me every night and all of a sudden I felt very warm at my feet almost as if a heater were pointing right at my feet. And I thought it was him because that’s where he used to sleep but I thought maybe it’s just me going crazy trying to find comfort but now that you said you felt your dogs warmth too I know it was him and you made me feel so much better 😣💕 thank you sm I thought I was the only one who felt this

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just comes down to practice! And always work closely from a reference photo.
      The "don't" side is a good foundation, but there's a lot of room for improvement to create a realistic and more anatomically correct outcome that has a stronger likeness to the subject matter :)

    • @underfed9552
      @underfed9552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all thanks for replying so quickly. Second of all, i am a super amateur, i know nothing. I’ve had some decent drawings but most of them is from a step by step tutorial. What i really want to learn is what to put in a drawing and what is not so necessary, shadowing and drawing the shapes properly because everytime i draw something, even with a grid, always look kinda odd. I don’t want to bother you too much but I would really love to know how you have started learning to draw because I don’t know where to start practicing and learn. If you could tell me that would be super awesome!

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! :) A lot of learning is through trial and error- I know there's a desire to get things perfect straight away though. Every drawing you make- even if the last one was better- is a step forward ... especially if you know what you would've done differently and what you liked about the piece.
      As for what to include- for most sketches, I don't include detail. But it's entirely dependent on the function of the sketch.
      My foundations for my fully rendered pieces will have things that you won't see in "sketchbook doodle" type drawings. Those foundations will have things that are more functional than that are there to look good- e.g. where I map out different sections of highlight and shadow. (I suggest you look at my instagram or facebook page for some examples of this).
      For a sketchbook doodle, where the sketch is the finished piece (which is sort of what I've drawn in the video), I'll include some simple shading to help give the piece some form- like you say, an outline alone can look weird. I suggest working on toned paper if you can, so you can easily add in highlights as well as shadows. In this case I'd also consider applying shadow/highlight to mimic fur direction by using simple hatching.
      Hope this helps! Here's a video that might help: th-cam.com/video/25Z8tLnZ6aI/w-d-xo.html
      I also have a few about improving realism and drawing accuracy- I suggest clicking on my channel and scrolling through the "videos" tab to see if there's anything else that might be relevant for you :)

    It's like beginners give animals human features unconsciously, like flat faces, too round heads and a little high eyes.
    I find that position (3/4) very helpful for drawing people because it makes you figure out the nose shape and the shading, but for dogs I like the front view more.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for commenting!
      Yes, I agree with you entirely. I found myself doing the same thing until I started tracing references and comparing to my freehand sketches. It's easy for beginners to rely too much on symbols (e.g. drawing an "eye shape" rather than observing the shape of the eye in the reference)- and of course the symbols we are most familiar with are the ones based on the human face :)
      I personally found that front-on view is very difficult for animals with long muzzles. It forces the artist to focus very closely on value and the changes fur direction in order to describe the foreshortened form. We're all different though :D

    not sure if you still respond to this particular videos or not but it is great! I was curious if you used different pencils or if that was the same one through the drawing. I am fairly new to scetching and such but I find it difficult knowing when a certain pencil should be used. It more often than not results in my drawing looking very dark. I think a lack of really knowing where shading works and doesn't, has a great deal to do with it. I love your videos though. thank you for sharing your gift and experience

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read and respond to all comments- I get notifications for all of them, even on older videos :)
      A rule of thumb is to work from light to dark. If you're working in graphite, I suggest sketching in a hard pencil with a light hand, so that your lines can be easily erased. Things can always be darkened up, but it's difficult to erase dark areas and lines.
      I always leave a list of my materials in the description box- I only used one prismacolor col-erase pencil for these two sketches. I don't like sketching in graphite as a graphite sketch can mix and muddy coloured pencil if not entirely erased before colouring, so I use erasable coloured pencil instead. :)
      I tend to leave outlines of forms very light, as in reality an edge of a form isn't a hard line, but simply a difference in values on each side of this perceived line. If I begin to render a sketch, I'll use some simple hatching and directional marks in order to represent these different values. For fully rendered piece the outline is removed entirely and the form is described using different values rather than lines to define edges.

    Woohoo im impressed im off to a good start because I started off doing the grid cropping thing before I searched up any vids to help me. Came here because maybe my photo that I chose to draw doesnt have a ton of definition to help me with shape, but I feel that I am getti g the proportions incorrect, or the eyes are incorrect. I can't look at my pet for reference because he recently passed away after being with me for over 15 yrs. So I don't want to screw his portrait up! Thanks for the tips

    Hello! Great video c;
    But I have a question, what if I want to draw it on my style? I mean, not copy exactly from the reference, but create… I really find I hard to place the features even with a reference and I can’t get to actually understand the dog anatomy (I’ve been trying to figure it out for like years )

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a fantastic question!
      The video here is specifically for drawing realism in general, but just because I draw realism doesn't mean I don't have my own individual style. It's unavoidable- the way I interpret things, the techniques I use, materials, colour choices... all these things are considered as style.
      The best illustrators and animators have a solid understanding of realism in order to create their convincing stylisations- by convincing I mean that a cartoon is made in a way that suggests form and consideration got the function of its anatomy.
      Many say that you need to understand the rules before you can break them. I seriously recommend watching The Art of Aaron Blaise on YT- he's one of the best of the best. He has decades of industry experience- it takes a lot of passion and a long time for things to be as fluent and as easy as he makes them seem.
      As for me, the way that I improved my observational skills?
      I trace! And I've used a bunch of other techniques as well to reinforce my observational skills (I explain them here th-cam.com/video/1DvmpEzdi5M/w-d-xo.html).
      In the space of a year or so, I feel confident in using little support to get convincing looking results, although I'll still use tracing for pieces where accuracy is critical (e.g. portraits, commissions etc). Drawing dog skulls, and looking at anatomical references (pictures showing the musculature of an animal) can also be incredibly helpful. All dogs have the same facial bones and muscles, but for different breeds they're formed and arranged differently.
      Art is hard! It takes a lot of time, dedication and perseverance. You just have to keep practicing, and try to find new ways to approach your goal. If you have the drive to continue, you will make it happen :)

    Some very good tips about drawing from a grid. Thank you. Question: Do you ever/sometimes use a scale divider to check proportions as you proceed?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I don't personally use a proportional divider. What I sometimes do is zoom in on the reference photo on my PC so that the drawing and reference are the same size- that way it's easier to judge lengths and in a pinch you can hold the two side-by-side to check.
      Usually though I will just use the grid as a way to measure up the piece in order to keep proportions consistent.
