As a young adult who's never bought a car before , thank you so much!! The Ontario website had me so overwhelmed and confused, this video broke it down perfectly 😊
I was given the bank draft, left my plates on and let them take the van to their mechanic for approval. My plates were later returned to me but I felt confident in trusting the couple I sold it to. Ideally the buyer has already gone to Service Ontario and gotten plates of their own before picking up the vehicle from the seller. Thanks for the question. I hope that’s helpful:)
Thanks for that:) Put a lot of work into it. I didn’t go to Service Ontario with the buyer so I’m gonna say that’s something you don’t have to do. Thanks for watching:)
great video...so technically, they will make a short drive with the vehicle, with no insurance or plates to get it to their place? Is this what most people do?
No you need plates and insurance to drive the vehicle anywhere. In my specific situation my buyer handed me the certified check (as they were quite positive on buying), and I let them take the van with my plates under my insurance to get a final check from their mechanic. This probably isn’t typical. I imagine most buyers would be getting their own plates and insurance from Service Ontario before going to pick up the vehicle. Hopefully that helps! I’m certainly not an expert so please call service Ontario to double check. Thanks for watching!
@@Zach-py8vb Please contact Service Ontario to be sure, but as far as I know you must notify the MTO that you’ve sold the vehicle by completing a Notice of Sale. You can complete this online through the ServiceOntario website. Or you can mail the completed form to the MTO or submit it in person at a ServiceOntario center. This ensures that you’re not held responsible for any future fines, violations, or accidents involving the vehicle after the sale.
Great video . Should i go to the bank with the other person for the bank draft /certified cheque ? Also, should i wait for the cheque to be fully cleared before i hand them the keys? Thanks in advance
The idea behind a bank draft is that the money is taken from the person’s account when it’s drawn up ‘guaranteeing’ it to be there when you cash it. Because of this I was confident in handing over the keys when I was handed the draft, but you should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Glad I could help!
do seller need to come to Service Ontario with buyer to complete the process? Any risk for buyers if just receive the documents from sellers and give all money (then go to Service Ontario by themselves)?
Sellers don’t need to go with Buyer to completely the process if the seller has already collected and filled out the paper work. I don’t see any risk for the buyers in the second option, I would just be sure they’ve already been to collect their new plates to drive the vehicle away. For more in-depth questions I would suggest contacting Service Ontario. But Thanks for asking!
Thank you very much! I have some questions I wanna double check with you, do I need to go to the service Ontario with the buyer? Should I wait for the cheque to be deposited before I handlling everything to him?
Glad it was helpful. I never went to Service Ontario with the buyer. If all the paperwork is straight there’s no need. Also to avoid stress with cheque, as for it to be certified that way the money is guaranteed to be there. Best of luck and thanks for the questions:)
That’s between you and the seller. We had a great relationship and I really felt like we both trusted and respected each other. Even though I had the van safetied through my mechanic the buyers wanted theirs to do a ‘pre-sales’ check. Before they grabbed the van to drive it to their mechanic they paid me in full with a certified check assuming that all would go well with the test. Which it did:) Hope that helps!
The bank draft is guaranteed money as the total amount has already been taken from their account. That coupled with me trusting my buyers from the first meeting gave me the confidence to hand the keys when they gave me the draft.
@@MattWatsonComedy fair enough. Have read that drafts can still be fabricated though. Some recommending going to the bank with the buyer to see the draft being made. Guess it all depends on your risk profile
This was extremely helpful and within 10 mins!! I was very intimidated by this process and now I’m not. Thank you very much 1 question, being that the vehicle was sold for around 35K, how did the buyers purchase it from you?? Cash? E transfer? How does that work for that large amount of money?
That means a lot Juju thank you:) I asked to be paid the same way I originally paid for the vehicle which was through a draft money order. It makes it safe for everyone involved as when it’s drawn up, that guarantees the funds are there, so you’ll be able to deposit it worry free. Glad I could help, and best of luck with your sale!
So, I'm reading all these horror stories about what can happen during that 6 day window and it becoming your responsibility if they don't register the car. Can you comment? I assume you have to take your plates off?

@@MattWatsonComedy So, they're able to drive the car once we do the paperwork with no plates for 6 days? I'm just concerned that if anything happens within that 6 day window, as far as the ministry is concerned, the car is still mine and not theirs which means I'm liable for anything which may happen. How much tax did they pay
You'd have to ask them, sorry I don't have that answer.
Capture your vehicle in best lighting, so people don't have chance to see what rhey are actually going to see when they come out to the vehicle.
People won’t make the effort to come if the photos aren’t appealing, that’s why I suggest taking a bit of extra time for this step.
