I just purchased recently another pup to train for protection work from Czech Republic. He is now 8 weeks old. Besides researching the line and the breeder where you decide to purchase your pup at , at such a young age look for the pup that wants to engage with you ie; tug of war, playing chase and is active and confident ie; you know in all litters you have the pup that's scared of everything, isn't confident, won't break away from the litter. Then there's the one that's considered the bully. Gets into everything likes to break away and explore, isn't scared of anything, always breaking the rules. That's the pup you want for protection. It's not a guarantee but at that age those are just a couple of signs to look for. Expect to spend hundred hours in training with your dog and a minimum of $5000.00 it's about average for having your own dog trained in bite work. That is of course if he has the personality and temperament for it. Most places will run a few tests by your dog to see his drive and potential for this type of work. Beware of those places that say they can turn any dog into a protection dog and want your money without even looking at your dog. Just like not everyone has the temperament to be a police officer, not every dog has the traits required for bite work.

Hi German Shepherd Man, I had to laugh when you were moving Seargant's stick around, and Seargajt was moving his head in order to follow the stick. I liked your comparison of protection talent in dogs and singing talent in humans. It all makes sense. On another note, I have some friends who used to have a rooster whose name was also Rocky.
My puppy has the guard work in spades...its different when its outside and its attack work..he is 12 months..this morning he protected from a guy walking by at the park..the guy wasn't a threat..but it's a step in the right direction.
That was very insightful and I better understand the friendly comment from a Shutzhund IPO competitor that my rescue GSD girl may not live up to my expectations when I said I wanted to do beginner French Ring with her. She certainly has prey drive and intelligence but that ability to stand like steel in the face of a threat..maybe not so much. Hard to know if she was born that way, I’m her fourth home at only 18mos. GSDs with high prey drive require a lot of physical and mental exercise, do people understand this? That’s why they land in the da*n shelters. I adore my rescue but she needed a highly motivated owner/handler. People who don’t understand this get overwhelmed and eventually surrender them, it breaks my heart to see these wonderful but reactive GSD in the rescues.
A lot of people think they want a protection dog until they have a real one then they want a family dog, but once the dog is trained A certain way it’s hard to train it another way. If you want a protection dog please do research first then if you’re not sure but you still kind of want one try training it from the beginning to be balanced with a guard and family dog! (It’s better for beginners) this was just a suggestion you don’t have to
My 4 month old German Shepherd seems so naturally protective, even at his young age. He doesn’t bark or growl at people for no reason. But when we’re in public if someone walks up he will sit, or stand very regal and alert, until I tell him it’s okay, then he’ll relax. I wonder if protection training would be good for him!
It depends if your dog can be built up to a confidence level where it can take pressure. It might act protectively but the real situation will most likely be totally different
@@jw-vx8im wow this was awhile ago I forgot about this lol! Well he’s 15 months now, never went through with the protection training because I thought his look, size, and bark were intimidating enough. However, something really scary did happen and his natural instinct kicked in and he definitely changed everything! Everyone always said my dog wouldn't "actually" do anything in a real situation... Guess I got lucky and I’m so grateful I did.
I have a 3 month old german shepherd pup and i havent looked into protection training. But he is not afraid of loud noises like fireworks going off on 4th of July etc. He also does not bark at anyone. Except this one day he did an aggressive bark i never heard of at someone i was suspicious of while i was in my front yard. Once that person was gone he stopped barking and sat next to me.
Hello GSM as always I enjoy watching and listening to your very informative videos, about German shepherd dogs👌. Question, when picking a puppy from a litter, is there a way to pick out a puppy that you feel would be the best choice, for a protective dog ( alert) , as well as a puppy that would be a great companion 🤔.
@@germanshepherdmanofficialc7598 I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR PRESENCE, 👌 thank you very nice you are the man and I and we looking forward to one of your puppies🙏👍,as long as Sergeant the king of Black German shepherds, or Big Don, is the Stud, lol 👌💪
He’s right. I own a protection dog and these dogs are bred for this. And even then you can’t guarantee the dog will bite / fight. The must be social , demonstrate solid nerve , posses high prey drive and most of the time when these things are in place you can build the dog and get it to bite/ fight. This also doesn’t change the dog’s personality. It’s no diff than taking your child to learn jujitsu for example. You’re teaching the animal to spar with a human. Now some of the more intense bloodlines come out of the womb biting ( literally). Gotta know the right breeder and trainer.
My two GSD’s are instinctual, but not trained enough for protection. I don’t have any professionals I can work with here. Can a service dog be double trained to do protection work? Also, what is the likelihood that a service animal would be a good candidate for this kind of work?
How do i get my 4 month old gsd to stop submissively urinating? He does it to the whole family. He is potty trained but he always dribbles all over when stimulated or nervous.
Hi from Australia. Love ur videos. I have a rescue German shepherd who was 3.5 years old when I got him. He now 4.5. He is so good at home but as soon as we leave he pulls so much on lead and wants to attack any animal he sees. I can’t walk him when I see other dogs as he just wants to attack and pull on lead and jump. With people he is fine. Is there any way to correct his behaviour? I have tried while walking him but nothing works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I used neck collar but he broke that while we on walk when trying to get to another dog and he attacked the other dog. I brought a harness thinking it will help in walking but it’s just the same. Pls German shepherd man I need help, my partner wants to rehome him but I can’t let him go
If you do use a prong collar you have to have a secondary collar in case the prong comes loose. Most people don't know that...it sounds like he was not socialized properly during the "Socialization Window" as I call it, 4-8 months of age. Watch Beckman's Dog Training Channel on TH-cam. He does a great job showing how to fix problems like you are having. GSM
This is an eye opener, and well thought out video. Yes I want Nayla to be protective, but also not put herself in harms way. 14 month old female rescue dog, I keep threatening to bring back to a shelter. I don't want an aggressive dog, but last 5 months we kind of hit a balance, but she is still a bitch towards other dogs. I don't understand why a GSD is so aggressive on a leash, and submissive off. We all have our quirks, and she has lots. P.S. I could never let her go to a shelter, no matter how much she pushes my buttons
I would rather die than have my dog die for me, but I do want a smart dog who is capable of listening well and looking out for me! Great video, thank you.

Quick question how old are your dogs? And how can I get my 5month dog German Shepard to stop jumping on me and my mom when we go outside to see her and to like water it’s very hard to give her a shower.
Don't leave the dog outside alone constantly. They need mental and physical exercise daily. And a lot of it. If you got the dog to just stay outside to protect property, and aren't working the dog, and bonding with it....one day it's going to be worse than jumping. Hopefully you got the pup trained by now. I have a personnel protection dog and I'm also a trainer. I have protection dog people all over and none of them have a lab for that kind of work for obvious reasons but everyone is entitled to their own opinion
@@HGTDogTraining I've met 1 lab that made it as a protection dog. They'd definitely be better off looking at a different breed. It is possible to find one but it won't be easy and they'd be searching for a while.
If I may add to this: In the US the term “protection dog” can mean many things to many different people; and that is not good at all. The word “personal” has been chopped off; that is not good either. Personal Protection Dog (PPD) is the correct term. That being said, a successful and optimally trainer PPD has been conditioned/exposed to and can handle tremendous amounts of what’s known as social pressure: little kids loving and tugging on him, cats, other dogs, chickens, adults of all ages, birds, bicycles, cars, trips to Home Depot, gunfire, flying on a plane, etc. PPD’s are not K9/Military Working Dogs. PPD’s are not perimeter dogs used as deterrents. PPD’s are not Schutzhund (actually IGP now) dogs although they can crossover in that arena. PPD’s are not high drive working GSD’s/Mal’s/Dutchies that will bite a sleeve when they hear “Packen!” PPD’s are highly trained, highly sociallized (to a diversity of stimuli and adverse conditions), and highly obedient... almost to the point of a titled dog in the obedient part of IGP. Anything less is not a true PPD and can and will be a liability when exposed so to speak. Examples of who is excelling in the PPD field in the US: Protection Dog Sales in Kentucky, Gold Coast K9 in CA, Kraftwerk K9 in WA, and Vomberkhaus K9 in MT. There are more out there but that’s who I know.
German Shepherd Man Official Channel Your Black GSD’s are incredible lookers. I’d venture to say best in the US based on temperament, pedigree, health checks, etc. Now if we could just get the FSU Seminoles to look as good on the field as your GSD’s ha ha.
Learning to become a decoy for a PSA club in Central Ohio. The amount of people that just think their dog will defend them with just basic obedience training is amazing.

He’s telling the basics a video won’t be enough to train for protection. Plus he’s letting you know what to look to know if your dog has the capability for it.
I could almost bet my german shepherd puppy was born with it. He is very aware of his surroundings. Especially at night, he will be right by my side to make sure I am safe. My husband will call our dog and he will stick by my side and won't budge. He is always the last in the door. He herds us inside while walking circles around us to the door. I have another pup I bought at the same time and she has no cares in the world and is laid back. I will ask her what she has in her mouth when she is chewing on things and my german shepherd will immediately go over and take whatever it is out of her mouth and give her a bark as if he is saying, " You know your not suppose to have that!" The german shepherd is just very alert and hears every sound. Barks deeply if he sees someone by our house. It is a totally different bark than when he is inside. He even has a white patch on his chest. We call it his badge...lol. Best dog I ever had! Hands down!
When we get our dog we want her to primarily a pet but would like her to warn us of intruder or danger and be willing to join in the defense if necessary but not looking for a professional protection dog.
If she is GSD, she will alert to intruders with no training on your part. I’d recommend teaching a “bark”, and “quiet” command. She’ll bark naturally, and you should allow and reward the alert. That’s her job!! But once you tell her “quiet”, it’s basically you saying “hey, I heard you, I saw it, it’s fine. Stop yelling”, lol that one is equally important IMO
there’s no way I have the time or money to turn my GSD into a protector. However, simply looking the role goes a LONG way in public. I walk mine with a Julius k9 harness and he looks the part so well I’m afraid he may get in trouble for impersonating a K9. My point is - most, not ALL, but most who would even consider doing me harm will immediately reject me as a candidate because of the deterrent that his presence brings. They don’t need to know that he’d likely hide tail and run off if truly challenged - and that’s just fine with me.
is it possible to build up these types of drive in a 1 year old shepherd? My gsd has drive but i feel it’s not as high as it needs to be and i’m not sure how to build up her confidence acc defense drive. she is a DDR East german working line gsd. any advice?
Lots of DDRs are lower prey driven it seems, but not all of them. My Ruby is a BULLET for her ball!!! You can build it up with some work. Find something she really loves and "move" her with it. GSM
I'm thinking that there has to be inherent talent to operate at a high level in any area...like, in humans, if you want to be PAID to sing there HAS to be the talent for that first then the training. But, hey, you ARE DJI Know It All

Good recommendation about the protection dogs🎉

Amaris Monae my German Shepard is the same exact way!
Deanza Perez mine is the same way
It depends if your dog can be built up to a confidence level where it can take pressure.
It’s an instinct

Hello GSM as always I enjoy watching and listening to your very informative videos, about German shepherd dogs👌. Question, when picking a puppy from a litter, is there a way to pick out a puppy that you feel would be the best choice, for a protective dog ( alert) , as well as a puppy that would be a great companion 🤔.
Yes...too many things to mention here. I think I'll just do a video about that Emanuel...THANKS!!!

Gsd with black color is Awesome

Check out the Gentle Leader collar system. A gentle tug for bad behavior can do wonders...GSM

Hi German shepherd man! Huge fan! Quick question, by any chance do you know from your litters a puppy that could possible be candidate for protection. Meaning, do you test your puppy’s for these types of drives yourself? My goal would be two train him/her to a level one or two protective dog nothing higher than that. I’m currently in Minneapolis for a job and I love your puppy’s and will be contacting you in the near future for one of you puppys when I move from my apt to a house.
I do test puppies and it is obvious when a "protection candidate" emerges. I only have one every 20 or so puppies, but it does happen. GSM

Just realized this is an old comment

A lab would be a horrible Choice for a protection dog. They are not genetically designed for that line of work.
Lab for protection work.... good one
@@HGTDogTraining Labs can do great in protection work its just hard to find one with the right amount of drive.

I will ask her what she has in her mouth when she is chewing on things and my german shepherd will immediately go over and take whatever it is out of her mouth and give her a bark as if he is saying, " You know your not suppose to have that!"
The german shepherd is just very alert and hears every sound. Barks deeply if he sees someone by our house. It is a totally different bark than when he is inside. He even has a white patch on his chest. We call it his badge...lol. Best dog I ever had! Hands down!
Can a 2 yr old Sheppard be trained? Lady has no time for her so I'm taking her.what do you think?
Absolutely.
Totally agree with Revolting Kittah...Absolutely. GSM
Stop yelling”, lol that one is equally important IMO
how do I get my dog to bark at strangers
To answer that would require a conversation...I'd have to ask lots of questions. GSM

They can be trained to behave just about any way. Naturally, yes they are territorial, But pretty easy to train them to stop from what I understand.

there’s no way I have the time or money to turn my GSD into a protector.
Well said KMS5280...GSM
