I intend on it buddy :) If I have to recommend one game for you HeavyMetalJesus it'd be Flowers, Sun and Rain which is a hilarious puzzle murder mystery with an absolutely rocking soundtrack. It was made by Suda 51 the dude who made No More Heroes.
The ds could handle more polygons than the n64, as you can tell while the pixelation was not so good compared to the n64
Fond DS memory: me being caught by my mom playing games instead of studying for my exams because I had just discovered Phoenix Wright could be played by yelling "objection!" into the mic. 😂 I started really quiet and careful but the mic wouldn't register my voice until it was at a level my mom heard it from the other room. The DS was an essential part of my childhood. It gave me something to do when I didn’t want to, or couldn’t interact with people. I had like 10 games or so, but it was fun to play my favourite games and play with friends.
I had maybe 5 and it was still badass. I was just kinda poor but not i have like 50! Amazing system!

I recently started watching this channel and I like how he lets her talk and actually looks interested in what she has to say. I've seen a lot of channels where just one person speaks and the other people look like decorations
having watched this guy for the last 5 years, it's always struck me how he just seems like a genuinely nice dude. especially considering gaming culture can be so toxic, particularly to anyone who isn't the avg. target demographic lol
@@bogmanhimself4656 yeah, I discovered him about two years ago, and I like her a lot too. Alot of the competetive games can have toxic communities and the console fanboy loyalist can be toxic(ironically especially Nintendo) as well as PC master race. But usually the retro community and also casual gamers or hardcore gamers who enjoy all systems, and even some PC seem to be a lot more just about games in general and have a good inviting attitude. Also handheld gamers seem to usually be nice gamers, I really enjoy my PSP, 3ds (am putting more time into it now than I did in 2015 when I got it, same with the Wii u) and my Vita.
I love Kelsey's knowledge on all this right down to the "drop test" for the system to help durability

You can't play it on a tv, or use a controller. Same with 3ds, these are the reasons I dislike Nintendo
Gamecube and Nintendo Wii were great because you could use controllers, with the Gamecube you could use third party N64 controllers, and with the Wii you could use a dedicated controller and third party ones, like the one that looks like Xbox controller, and both you can play on a tv

Ya...those camera's can be bad for getting these second hand. I went to a thrift store and they had a DSI. When the guy turned it on to see if it worked, there was a picture of some guy naked from chest to crotch as soon as the system booted up. I'm just glad I was the one who saw it instead of some kid.

I just bought an original 3DS a couple of days ago (I know, took me 8 years later to purchase one finally). So glad it's got backwards compatibility. I can finally go back and play all of my old DS games from my middle school days. This video has been a great help with some of the games I missed out on too. You guys rock!
I bought one a couple months back too. Definitely get Elite Beat Agents, Retro Game Challenge and its sequel, Game Center CX 2, if you can speak Japanese.
Edit: apparently there's a fan translation for the second game.

My first DS was a DSi. I remember seeing my friends play GBA games on their original DS's and DS Lites. I almost broke my DSi trying to pull off the bottom part XD.

i only saw a ds fat at a friends house when it first came out. it had a weird fisher price look and feel to it for me so i wasnt too interested in it then, but i have grown up since and want the fatty for my collection now
I own two of them. I started on the Gameboy, but my first DS was the fat DS. I like the looks of it and the fact that you can turn off the backlight so save power in the sun 👍 Its my favorite DS hands down

+Pan Jan I don't entirely agree, I don't think bad games should ever be *entirely* forgotten...I mean, we do need our cautionary tales for future developers after all, and plus it's always a good thing for newbies (like me, sort of, I only just started a collection of DS games because of my 3DS I got earlier in the year, never had a DS or system capable of playing the games before now) so they know what specifically to avoid and what's a waste of time/money.

I recently ordered the lite and the phat because I couldn't decide between them . I actually like the original ds design better for my big hands, and how the gba cartridge doesn't stick out. , but the ds lite has brighter screens .

So many nostolgic memories with the DS whether it was with friends on the bus, or with friends in my house etc. I also played my first call of duty on there COD 4, before I got an Xbox 360. The most memorable thing with the DS is when i opened it up a year or two ago after not playing many ds games for a while and playing Nintendogs. When i started it up, I saw my two family dogs that I had put down a few years earlier, still as puppies, it made me cry, but I kept my DS for that reason
I would recommend New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, and Nintendogs along with Call Of Duty Modern Warfare.

Some additional notes:
1. The DS Phat's screens are frontlit, and there are only two brightness settings: Off, and on. The other models' screens are backlit with multiple brightness settings, making them more desirable.
2. The DSi Shop has cool stuff on it, but the store is going to be discontinued in March 2017. The games will still be available to buy on the 3DS eShop, but DSi units will be out of luck.
3. 3DS backwards-compatibility with DS games is great, but the resolution of DS games was smaller, so when they're blown-up, they don't look as great--things are blurrier, and I'd say a bit darker. You can boot the games in their original size by holding Start or Select while the games are booting, but if you're not on an XL, the display size is tiiiiiny. Bottom line, if you just want a way to play the amazing DS game catalog, 3DS is OK, but if you want a better display, go with one of the DS units.
4. Another accessory: The DS Rumble Pak. It plugs into the GBA slot (so its' DS Phat and Lite only) and it works with a decent little number of games--especially notable, Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan 2!
5. Some DS games support "dual-slot" functionality, where they interact with GBA games in various ways. The most prominent examples are the 4th gen Pokemon games, which supported Pokemon transfer from the GBA Pokemon games. If you're interested in any of that stuff, get a DS Lite.
6. A lot of games supported online play through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. That service was unfortunately discontinued for all games in May 2014. :(
Interesting accessory note, there is actually a paddle controller than you can get for the DS or DS lite that works with Space Invaders Extreme 1&2 and Arkanoid DS. The controller itself was import only, but it works with the US versions of the games.

You should definitely have put super princess peach on the list! :) I love the whole concept of that game, and despite not being Nintendo that made it, it is a really solid and awesome game!! :)
The legend of zelda phantom hourglass has a really nice gameplay. You move link with the pen and attacks are done by tapping enemies and making rounds on the screen. There are even times you have to blow in the mike to put down fire and times you have to make noise so a character in the game knows you are there to help them.
You also get to draw on the map and take notes.
Such a great game!

The World Ends With You, Infinite Space, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, and Moon are, in order, my all time favorite games on the DS (they honestly make the DS an extremely worthwhile investment all on their own), and I am very happy to see that they all got mentioned by you guys!

I’m so glad that you recommended The World Ends With You, I think more people need to play this game because in the gameplay it’s a fresh air, and I found the world and story super compelling. I remember playing dementium and being so immersed, very impressive for a handheld game back in the day. After I played that game I started playing silent hill origins on psp, which had a similar eerie atmosphere. That rekindled my interest in the silent hill series. It had been since the first silent hill on ps1 since I played a silent hill game, and after playing dementium and origins, I went through silent hill 2-4 and it became my alltime favourite survival horror series.
Great video! I miss the backwards compatibility of the DS. Brought it with me when I lived in Japan and I had a ton of J games that came back with me to the US. Sucks with 3DS you basically need a second system...

I have the pink DS Lite, but i was really stupid and put lime juice on it. It doesn't really work, (as in "It doesn't really work" I mean that when you plug in the AC Adapter, the light turns on for a second, but then turns off) so i mean, there's a chance that i could fix it, and it might work
I would recommend Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver for those who love the Pokémon games. Apart from that i would pick up Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Party DS and Mario Kart DS

Probably the best system to keep around these days is a DS Lite. It can play both GBA and DS, and connect them for games like Pokémon.
The DSiWare store is also down now, but you can access all of those games and features on a 3DS.
A rare case where I'd actually recommend a system that's supposedly inferior to its successor.

i loved my gameboy color and gba but never got a ds when i was a teen. about a year ago i won a new 3ds xl and i have been loving it ever since! finaly got to play all the pokemon generations i missed and your ds and 3ds buying guide helped me to pick out some other great games and the best thing is most games are dirt cheap now especially used ones.

@@jerrysmith8814 Its honestly not even the gameplay, I just find the story kinda boring and weird. The battles were fairly fun once I got used to them, I just didn't care to progress the story that much. Considering how much "omg so good" praise the game gets, I just don't really get it.

But as I progress through the story I began to enjoy it a lot and it honestly has some of my favourite characters of all time, Joshua for example. And Neku himself, a character I hated in the beginning, became one of my favourite JRPG protagonists of all time

"in colors i have never seen" that sounds like an early 90's add for some gimmiky tv.
Man. I'm surprised that Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword wasn't on this list. I thought it was one of the most unique games for the system. Considering you played it in book mode too. It was so well done and really implemented the stylus aspects into the controls well.
Elite beat agents is such a great game! I bought it 3 weeks ago and I love it!

One game that I recommend is Solatorobo. It's a spiritual successor to Tail Concerto on the PS1. A CIB copy is a bit pricey though.
Import it from the UK new copies cost about £15 (bout $25-30 dollar when postage is included which isn't bad).

I just got a “new” 3ds xl (the new name model) a few days ago in near perfect condition, I also think I lucked out & got an ips top screen, not that that matters too much but it’s a nice thing to have, I can’t wait to catch up on so many awesome games! :)
I know I'm 4 years late to the video, but: I'm so glad to see Elite Beat Agents in the list. My other favorite DS game, Trauma Center: Under the Knife, didn't make it though. I really liked those two games.
