Same. A lot of people miss it but I’m old enough and have seen enough of him to know those eyes instantly (T.A.P.S. old). It’s my favorite Tom character. He redeemed himself as an actor with this one, much like Iron Man did for RDJ.
There were many parody moments of old movies you may have never seen such as Rambo, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, and others that I surely missed.
"Can Speedman muh-muh-make audiences happy?" I was already cackling like a hyena after the Kirk Lazarus and Tobey Maguire trailer, but that line absolutely killed me! 🤣
There is only one woman in the movie and she has the funniest line in the whole movie. Yeah she was blessed with that face, but cancer sucks and no one should have to go thru that.
Always nice to see a _Tropic Thunder_ reactor who really gets it...and you got it immediately (as a semi-related aside, you'd be surprised how few people get the "Satan's Alley" joke,* so kudos for that as well). Seriously. Anyway, I loved the reaction, and loved seeing someone enjoy this movie as much as I do (it's my favourite comedy as well, proving to the world that movies CAN be extremely, OUTRAGEOUSLY over-the-top, and still be coherent works of art). And as for the budget, I believe it was ~90 million 2008 dollars, which is something like $130 million today. For a comedy, that's a MASSIVE budget. But Stiller (who WROTE the movie, in addition to directing it - not sure if you grokked that) wanted it to look like a real war movie (so the sets, props and effects were all first-rate...also, the explosion at the very end, where Stiller is running over the bridge was meant to parody _Mission: Impossible,_ you know, the one where Cruise is running away from the explosion and gets blown away by it), and he hired INCREDIBLE cinematographers whose visual storytelling both made the scenes look more real, AND took the comedy to the next level. And I don't think you could find a finer ensemble of talented A-listers starring in any other comedic film (from any era). Downey Jr., Stiller, Black, Cruise, Hader, Nolte AND McConaughey...it's insane. And I think Jackson and Baruchel play a key role in the film as "straight men," there to be audience surrogates and put voice to what we're all thinking (Jackson in particular was critical as an ACTUAL black man, there to ensure that viewers, even stupid ones, would understand that the message of the film was "these guys are dumb and completely divorced from reality" and not "we think blackface is cool"). Oh, and FYI, RDJ filmed _Iron Man_ in the spring and early summer of 2007, and _Tropic Thunder_ for a good portion of the rest of the year ( _Iron Man_ released in May, 2008, roughly three months before _Tropic Thunder_ ). So RDJ was very much still in his "comeback" phase, after his issues with substance abuse, proving to the Hollywood establishment that he really had turned things around. *It's buttsecks! I thought that was pretty obvious, but I guess not.
Weird I've seen every reaction to this movie and nearly everyone has understood the Satans Alley joke. It's pretty obvious. You're overthinking the blackface stuff entirely just like every other person who is obsessed with bringing it up on every reaction. Also there's at least a dozen other comedies from this era with just as big of a cast, some with a better cast.
@@derpderpin1568Ben pushes the boundaries of satire just to see what he can get away with; like a stand-up comedian intent on offending his entire audience just to loosen them up enough to laugh at the jokes next time.
The shot of Simple Jack, who communicates with animals, chasing a butterfly while swinging a wooden hammer always has me thinking, "What did the butterfly say to Jack to get on his shit list?"
23:40 "Tugg Speedman" yelling for the director to cut reminded me of the scene from The Dark Knight, where the Joker makes his entrance at the fund raiser Bruce Wayne is holding for the prosecutor, Harvey Dent. The Joker walks up to Rachel and holds a knife near her face, and the actress, Maggie Gyllenhaal, was so disturbed by Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker that she tries several times to look at the director to signal to him to cut, but Heath, completely in character, physically grabs her face and forces her to look at him.
My understanding is that there have been discussions for a Les Grossman film or series, though I don't know if it will come to anything. Cruise agreed to do the film, but only if he could have those hirsute ape-arms, which are a weird but great touch. I appreciate that they gave two Spielberg references in the same scene when Jack Black is looking at the pile of heroin (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), while rubbing his thumb at two fingers together (Indy trying to gauge the weight of the idol at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark).
Best reaction to this movie that I've seen. Glad you allowed yourself to just enjoy it without worrying about scenes being inappropriate. RDJ rocked his role. I'm black and I wasn't the least bit offended by his performance. I think we should make him an honorary black man!
This movie makes Infinity War so much better because when Iron Man yells “we almost got this off!”, I only hear Lincoln Osiris yelling. Also, I quote various lines from this movie on a near-daily basis.
The idea around Simple Jack was from a story around Hollywood that Ben Stiller auditioned to play Forest Gump and gave such a "unique" interpretation that it stuck with him
Tower Heist is another very funny movie with Ben Stiller, although directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Horrible Bosses, The Revenant), not Stiller. Also starring Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena, and a lot of other people you'll know. I highly recommend it.
RDJ says, "I don't drop character until the DVD commentary." If you're lucky enough to get your hands on the DVD, RDJ does the commentary as Lincoln Osiris. It's also available here on TH-cam. Also when they were campaigning for RDJ's Oscar nom, some of the "For your Consideration" ads they placed, they used scenes from "Satan's Alley" that don't appear in the movie's trailer.
Just discovered your channel with this movie reaction recommended to me - LOVED this reaction, and you’re right - this movie feels like it ages like a fine wine. It’s so good! The best part is Sandusky. I don’t know if you’ve seen How To Train Your Dragon movies, but Jay Baruchel is the voice of Hiccup, and thinking of that character and his performance in this movie just makes this so much more funny for me.
Whenever I watch videos with people who have also worked in the industry is whether they noticed Bill Hader spitting the food back onto the caterer's tray. Everyone who's been on set knows the rude people you have to work with or around behind the camera.
LIked the reaction, exactly right about the difference between satirical comedy and offensive art. Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux said they wrote the screenplay, yes as a satire on method acting in general. Also though, it was a reaction to a specific group of actor friends involved in war films who believed that the rigors of filming were the same as war itself. Tom Cruise suggested to Stiller that he include a Les Grossman type character, and then shaped Les' look and the dancing.
My favorite line in this movie is when the nerd is talking about the electronic history of the dvd format wars when Lincoln Osiris turns around bewildered and asks him "Were you talking to me this whole time?!!" #FantasticReaction So far, you're like 8 out of 10 for being on-point. Don't comment too much, you pick and choose the right moments when the action is lulled, you emote well on-screen, I see you're a writer, but I bet you could also do well in auditions for parts. Being attractive and able to remain yourself in front of a camera is sort-of job numero-uno for many lesser or mid-grade parts, we know this due to the fact that so many rappers are able to get parts with zero acting experience. #Xoxo!
Ben Stiller has actually directed some pretty amazing movies, like Zoolander, The Cable Guy and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. All are worth adding to your watch list.
The kid's Mandarin is correct but not very good, Robert Downey Jr. said some words correctly but basically he wasn't saying what the subtext said, most of the time
I think another aspect of RDJ's character is that the studio executives went out of their way to hire a white, Australian actor for the role because he was a bankable Oscar winning celebrity..
Just keep checking out comedies from that era. This one is good but there's definitely a bunch that are that much better. The 2000s were comedies peak.
This is the modern version of Blazing Saddles 'they couldn't make it today' and it's my favourite comedy. The jokes are aimed squarely at the phony interest and skin-deep care that the oscar-bait actors have gone to for their roles.
Hey if you love Tom Cruise, what is your take on Minority Report? Imo it's one of Spielberg most underrated movie. And is a great work of adaptation. The based story is a short Novel with the same title from Philip K Dick. As far as I'm concerned, Spielberg managed something quite rare. Not only it is a faithful adaptation, but he actually improved on the source material by a ling shot. The novel is good but the movie is great.
For example : one bold move, Spielberg actually dished out the original main antagonist to craft another one, to get a side more intimistic for the story.

If comedies should ever be criticized, it should be when they're mean spirited and punching down. This is making fun of rich and out of touch actors, greedy and tyrannical producers, overall pretentiousness of the trade and overblown movie productions, so not punching down in the slightest.
The only thing that always makes me cringe in this movie is not one of the things that all the woke people are complaining about nowadays. It is the "a dingo ate my baby" line. Making fun of mother who lost her 9 week old baby girl and was then wrongly accused and imprisoned is nothing i could ever laugh about. Not even in a satire. It's making me so mad. Just imagine your baby was killed and everyone would keep joking about it for 40+ years. Not trying to spoil the mood and I love everything else about this movie, but "let's remember sweet little Azaria and her mom Lindy"
Love that you spotted Tom Cruise immediately. So many people miss it until the end credits
Part of why it's Tom's best role.
Guilty as charged. Snuck right past me. (Granted, unless you're Jodie Foster, i'm not paying attention.)
Same. A lot of people miss it but I’m old enough and have seen enough of him to know those eyes instantly (T.A.P.S. old).

That and the way she widened her eyes as she said it really sells her mocking of Tugg Speedman Lol
She’s essential, makes it okay for us to laugh too.

RDJ was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but that was Heath Ledger's Joker year.
The greatest part is when RDJ was dressed as the Vietcong, he became the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude.

Ironman isn’t Robert’s early days. You gotta go back to the 1980’s for that. Ironman is his comeback.
That was a quality review w/ actual knowledge of movie making. Well done… my first time checking your channel out. Bravo. ✊🏽😜
When ben Stiller asked Tom Cruise to be in the movie, Tom Cruise said "Yes, but I want fat hands, and I want to dance."

One of the best comedies ever. And another top 5 comedy also has Ben stiller. There’s something about Mary.
The idea around Simple Jack was from a story around Hollywood that Ben Stiller auditioned to play Forest Gump and gave such a "unique" interpretation that it stuck with him

The scene where RDJ finds Tug , and half squat is there in the corner doing tai chi, that is a reference to Apocalypse Now

RDJ n Tom Cruise def stole the show with their characters. The others did great too but RDJ n TC killed it, favourite roles for sure.
You caught like every gag ! So many people watch this clueless ! Nice hardcore reaction .
If you want to see more of RDJ in this role watch "Tropic Thunder Behind the Scenes with Srgt Lincoln Osiris"
I saw this in the theater when it was released! NONSTOP LAUGHING!!!!! CLASSIC!
This is by FAR RDJr's best role ever! And Tom Cruise.
Amazing at 26:05, Exact facial reaction as Sandusky 😂
This is a parody of platoon, saving private Ryan, apocalypse now, the deer hunter, mission impossible, Indiana jones, full metal jacket, etc
One of the most on point, hilarious comedies of all time!
Early Robert Downey Jr is Weird Science and Less Than Zero.

One of the reasons this is so well done is because it took Ben Stiller YEARS to write this. Quality over quantity!
Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler compete often for most undeserving recognition in Hollywood
Whenever I watch videos with people who have also worked in the industry is whether they noticed Bill Hader spitting the food back onto the caterer's tray. Everyone who's been on set knows the rude people you have to work with or around behind the camera.
