A lot of people forget, this and Iron Man were RDJ's "comeback" movies. He had spent the late 90's and early 00's in and out of rehabs, courts, and jail. The guy was a mess and was basically blacklisted in Hollywood for a decade. Thankfully he was able to get the help he needed and we have the RDJ we have today.

"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary."
Fun Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary in the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses.
Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise.
Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

Hey Shree, your analysis of the staricial aspects of "Tropic Thunder" is the most well thought out breakdown of the naunced character tropes that have ever been pulled off. ------ The movie was written by Ben Stiller so I think he was aware of the misconceptions he wanted to potray in the movie and the commentary he wanted to make on Hollywood. -------- As you pointed out, He had RDJ playing black face, but places a black character to jauxatapose the obsurdity of his portrayal of Seargant Osiris. ------ He has a top-notch actor like Kirk Laxarus point out to Tugg Speedman that he took his portrayal too far for "Simple Jack". -------- Plus all the other characters and their quirks, insecurities and flaw are on full display. -------- Letting us know that actors are not Gods, just people with a highly paid desired skill.

I think the implication was, that he ended up taking the plane. He is shown with "G5 Owner's" Magazine. I think he then used the plane to mount a rescue. I think after reading Tom Cruise, he realized he wouldn't get anywhere. However, he realized that accepting TC's concession would put him in a better position to help Stiller, while also GREATLY benefiting him - naturally. I think he made the best of a less than ideal situation.
I think, this was the perfect movie for you to react to. You got it. That's not easy to do. This movie can be a bit confusing to a first time watcher. You didn't "Solve" the movie, close the book, then wait for your theories to be confirmed, but you GOT each moment, as the moments were revealed. You understood the motivations of the characters. You understood the story, and the plot. You made the connection between Speedman, and Four-Leaf Nolte. I like how you discovered Tom Cruise. It was the same way for me. I heard his voice coming from the screen. Then I ended up noticing his eyes & realized that it was him playing the role.
It was a good reaction, and I surely couldn't add any more to it. My favorite parody series is the Naked Gun series. I hope you are able to watch the rest of them. As for Epic Movie and Disaster movie... My sympathies. You probably couldn't have picked any worse examples of comedies, though I wouldn't recommend "Cheap Detective, either". "Superhero Movie" wasn't that bad, and even had Leslie Nielsen in it. Out of the x-Movies that aren't "Scary Movie", "Superhero Movie" is probably one of the better examples. "Not Another Teen Movie" isn't bad either, though it's definitely for mature audiences. Keep it up, and I look forward to more content.

About the 'blackface' of Robert Downey Jr.
I personally think that everytime someone does something, it shouldn't be met with an automatic response but the context taken into account.
In the movie they try to present an actor taking his role so seriously that he undergoes pigmentation change. The movie also address the issue by having other black characters calling him out on this.
So I find it hard to believe racism was behind this particular blackface representation.
An example of obvious racist blackface is the notorious Birth of a Nation (the 1915 film).
A movie that on a technical standpoint is a masterpiece, truly, but storywise, it is a vile, racist, cheap propaganda for the KKK (the kkk actually was reformed and influnced by the movie).
In it white actors are in blackface because, of course, no black man would want to play in a movie where they are presented as mindless animals hellbent on raping white women.
So yeah, the movie is hilarious and note: I did not recognized at first Tom Cruise, but he is hilarious as the over the top greedy Les Grossman.

And secondly, my favorite Hollywood-on-Hollywood movie of all time is probably Blake Edwards's 1981 film *S.O.B.* (which was also the last film for William Holden). It was made chiefly to thumb his nose at Tinseltown for its treatment of him in the wake of his big-budget failure of 11 years previously, *Darling Lili.* That one had his wife, Julie Andrews, in a controversial shower scene, and in this one she plays an actress much like herself whose producer-husband (played by Richard Mulligan) has what he believes is a sure-fire way to turn their latest film flop into a mega-success at the box office. “Interview With The Vampire” (1994)

    Shree, it's not black face.
Black face was an intentional exaggeration designed to make black people look stupid.
That's not what's happening in the movie, and it's not offensive. I have not seen a single solitary black person say this was in any way offensive. In fact if you go and watch black youtubers reacting to Tropic Thunder they are laughing their asses off in every scene that he is on screen. RDJ has said he's gotten nothing but positive feedback, and Joe Rogan even asked people like Dave Chappelle, and Jamie Foxx what they thought of it. "Hysterical."
We don't need to cry offense at everything. Sometimes its okay to just laugh at a funny thing. We treat everything as "damaging" these days and it's not. People used to be able to laugh at each other and themselves and not get it twisted into a social insult at every turn.
28:48 It's a free society. Actors do have the right to play whatever they want. If people had this attitude back in 2008, we would have been deprived of this hilarious movie.

Richard Dreyfuss made similar comments recently, and Ive also been saying this too. Like when a few reactors give their fake outrage at Dan Akroyd's blackface scene in Trading Places. Hmm yet they completely ignore that ALL the characters in that scene are dressed as other races. Even the butler is dressed as a stereotypical drunk Irish priest. Yet that part doesnt even dawn on them because people are so damn braindead now they just know they've been trained to ACT horrified at certain things. Completely excluding all context or God forbid that it's just a freaking joke in a comedy movie

    - Talking that long without pausing
    - Spending minutes wondering about an actor instead of focusing on the scene
    - Talking over dialogues to check something on your phone without pausing
Not a good way to react.
If you just mistook FMJ with Platoon, a forgivable excuse... if only!

Also, I didn't put it together until you said it... I 100% totally can see Paul Giamatti as Les Grosman. If you've never seen the movie Shoot 'Em Up, then I definitely suggest that one. Shoot 'Em Up is a great "thin on plot" amazing action movie. Clive Owen plays the unwanting badass hero and Paul Giamatti plays the lead mean villian. If that movie was a 5 out of 10, then Paul Giamatti made it at least an 8 :P For those not familiar with it and/or doubting it's fun ride... I submit to you the following scenes
    a carrot as a murder weapon - th-cam.com/video/GZXtx2oRMuU/w-d-xo.html
my fav road rage scene - th-cam.com/video/OSKCWCPXQ-8/w-d-xo.html

Sorry but your constant harping on Downey being a black character is kinda dumb it is satire why do you go all in .in real time more people were upset over the simple jack stuff and the Tom cruise character had huge blow back .so kinda tired of all the whining about Downey's performance it was actually amazing but some are too childish to understand it

These brain dead people nowadays are just trained monkeys. They know theyre supposed to ACT offended. Even though theyre not really offended. It's the reason people dont even make comedies anymore. Libtards have completely ruined so many aspects of society. They call themselves progressives but we're actually regressing as a society. I watched her react to The Fly and she kept calling the ex bf Stumpy after he had his hand and foot melted off. So just like most libtards shes just a fucking hypocrite. Everyone should be allowed to make jokes, and not do it themselves but cry when others do it

And if you want a recommendation for more satires.
An ingenious, more kind of meta style satire, that never winks at the camera, so many greatly misunderstood the film at the time and sometimes still do current day if they’re going in fresh.
